No proof of where Absolom was born - believe 1789/1790 as male under 5 shown on census in NC - 3 females under age 10 and female abt Joseph's age. These all show up on 1800 census in KY & couldn't locate in NC. 1st land record in KY was in late 1790's - don't have at my fingertips but did locate some court records in NC in the mid to late 1790's. No proof of any relationship to Samuel FitzRandolph - only speculation based location/etc. So many county records in NC destroyed during the civil war. This has been a tough one for me for over 25 years - a big brick wall - DNA could bust it if we could just find someone to do the cheek swab to establish the connection.

Joseph Randolph is the father of Absolom Randolph. Absolom was born in NC and the family moved to KY probably in the late 1790's. -Presume Absolom's mother died and Joseph married Ann Medlock. Absolom moved to Mo about 1829 and Joseph had already died by then. We need some Randolph males from both Absolom's 1st and 2nd marriage to do DNA testing to determine line this Randolph came through - one Randolph was tested from Burton Randolph's line which is from Absolom's 1st mrg and it closely matches a Samuel Fitz Randolph line from same area of NC which also changed to Randolph. DNA testing from Absolom's marriage to Matilda Gordon would provide more matches and also prove that Burton is a son from his 1st marriage. Only 2 sons from 2nd marriage - Andrew Jackson Randolph and James Polk Randolph - so one of their male descendents who still bears the Randolph name needs to be tested.

HIs grandparents were Robert and Pearl, then (Frank and Elizabeth Hardcastle. I think I have it all fairly straight, until now is the Fitz about to come in? Is there a Joseph between absolem and robert? I don't have that part clear

I am descended from a William Randolph who was born in Ohio in 1820 and came to Indiana around 1840 with brothers James and John and a father probably named William and born in Virginia 1770-1780. There seems to be a lot of connections here with the Ross County, Ohio Randolphs. I would like to compare notes.

That may be perfectly true, but on my Herrin DNA the research accepted over the years by the most renowned researcher whose work was used as a baseline turned out to be science fiction, leving me a skeptic. I make so many mistakes myself when researching and I think of myself as thorough, that I'm just wary.

One thing of interest. Peyton Randolph/Randall was in Montgomery Co., NC with the Swearingens at one time. Richard Cheek Swearingen ended up following them to Pulaski Co., KY, In Montgomery Co. was Timothy Randolph from Halifax Co., VA *Rev War Vet). That just happens to be where the Dyes were from (if memory serves me). There were Rabdalls there as well.

I did my research several years ago, but have Alexander the probable son of John (b. ca 1690) s/o Giles (b. 1650-1660) and Mary Blanch. My research was original. I don;t know what the other researchers show.

It was Isham Randolph who had Royal Mines in Bertie Co. I never identified this Isham because the well-known Isham went back to England. Perhaps he was a non-resident owner of mines,

The document contains an interesting collection of information about several unrelated Randolph branches, including James of Caswell Co. and Giles of Norfolk.

However, I still think based on DNA results, that we are unlikely to find a connection between James and Giles. In the best case, the two lines are off by 3 markers (4 steps) in 25 which translates to a most recent common ancestor of 32 generations - or 800 years. If you use the full 37 markers results for the testees (one from each line), the difference expands to off by 7 (9 steps) in 37, which translates to a MRCA of > 150 generations.

These are just probabilities of course, so the match *could* be more recent. At least the two lines have the same haplogroup so they are related in the 1000s of years time frame, as opposed to 10s of 1000s of years. :-) My guess is the match is back in the past in England, prior to any immigration to America.
Now I'm confused. As I understand it, Giles I was born 1640, married Elizabeth Unknown in 1667 and had children:
Giles II, b. ca 1665
Elizabeth, b. 1668
Robert, b. 1670
William, b. 1675

Giles II married Mary Blanch in 1687 and had children:
Giles III, b. 1688, d. 1750
William, d. 1735
Ann
John
Sarah

Giles II was christened Mar 1674 and that appears to have often used as his dob, but that would make him only 13 when he married and fathered Giles III - highly unlikely.

William (1675) married unknown and had children:
William Randell, b. ca. 1686
John Randall, b. ca. 1693

As for Alexander, a posting from Virginia Randolph (of this Randolph line) states that some researchers say that Alexander (b. ca. 1718) would be a son of John (b. ca 1693), son of William, son of Giles I. At this point, nothing is proven though.

Does this match your thinking?

I'm not so sure we can connect Alexander to John, or at least to the John you're thinking of. Let's try matching dates up.

We are pretty sure that James was born ca. 1725, and Giles was born 1674. Correct? Do we have any dates for Alexander or John?

Even if not, that means that Alexander could have been born as late as 1705 or so, and John as early as 1695 or so. But I doubt John had Alexander at age 10.

So I think they're a mismatch to begin with, unless I got dates wrong somewhere. (Or unless I'm wrong about the assumption that James is the son of Alexander, and Alexander was born significantly later than 1705... it looks like there's a definite contradiction here.)

I had thought for sure that John was Alexander's father based on his proximity and commonality of Royal Mines in Bertie Co. with Samuel Swearingen. I did find a site that has the probable parents of Jane Randolph. I sent it toDoyle Harper for help. Her parents may have been James Barnes and Jane Barksdale of Edgecombe Co. Jame's parents were James Barnes and Martha Jones.

There is certainly confusion about with so many people with the same name. I was the one who said earlier that DNA showed no match between James of Caswell Co. and Alexander Randall. I got that from some other information and it appears that person may have been confused, as well.

As far as I know, we do not actually have a DNA test on a proven descendant of Alexander Randall/Randolph of Edgecomb Co., NC. There was a test on a descendant of an Alexander Randall of NJ, which may be where the confusion took place; I don't know.

As for James of Caswell Co. and Giles Randolph, they are a relatively close match on the DNA - 5 steps in 25 markers - but when expanded to 37 markers, the distance expands to 10 steps. It's enough to show they are not related in the last 500-600 years (at least).

I was given the DNA results several years ago. It was not about James and Alexander, but about Alexander and the Giles Randolph line whose son John was a candidate. I have never seen DNA evidence that eliminates James as the son of Alexander. In fact, if it did, I'd question the research of their baseline.

Sally Wood , daughter of William and Hannah (Bennet) Wood of Orange County, New York ( probably Warwick), was born 1779 in Warwick , Orange Co NY.(This all according to the Book, Under the Rooftrees ,on Ancestry.) Sally married Lewis F Randolph.
*Does anyone know who the children of Lewis and Sally Randolph were?*

I have an Elsie Randolph b.Feb 23 1817 Orange County NY. I cannot find her parents.

On the 1810 Warwick, Orange Co census, there is:

Lewis F Randolph
1 m under 10
1 m 10-15
1 m 16-25
1 m 26-44
1 m over 45
1 f under 10
1 f 16-25
1 f 26-44

On the 1820 in Warwick, Orange Co NY there is:
Lewis F Randolf
Warwick,Orange NY
Aug 7 1820
1 m 10-15
1m 16-18
3 m 16-25
1 m 26-44
2 f under 10
2 f 16-25
1 f 26-44
1 colored male 45 and over
4 engaged in manufacturers

( As you can see, on the 1820 there is one more female under 10- which would work for my Elsie, b 1817)

In 1810 Lewis Randolph was an Ensign under Lt Col Jacobus Posts regiment in Orange CO NY
also
pg 160
"William Benedict and Lewis F Randolph, her son-in-laws, went to the conflict of 1812, awaiting orders to march on Long Island when peace was declared."

also
pg 271
"In the year 1813 Lewis F Randolph purchased of Andrew Hathorn nine acres of land in Warwick, for which he paid $30."

pg 202
"The old corner hotel on Main stree, long kept by Mr. Lewis F Randolph, was the scene of two most tragic happenings."

That is all I can find on Lewis Randolph.

In my family tree I have a David Randolph born abt 1796, and having one son named Dennis born in Juniata County, PA. David's occupation was blacksmith. I have traced David back to the 1830 census where he lived in Milford Township in Miffin County, but no further. I believe that David was a son of Dennis.

If she is the one I was told of she is full cherokee and is my great great grandmother, or there abouts.I will ask my aunt more about her. It was my understanding she made the trail of tears, but it could be that she was born after that. I will double check on that, but again I will ask my aunt, my parent have passed on and she is the only person I can ask about these things.

Clarkson E Randolph.......1865 Burial Site found in Indiana

Most Randolph researchers list Clarkson E Randolph dying at
his home in Douglas County, IL, in 1865. ....
I found his headstone and that of his daughter, Harriet Newel Clarkson,
on line at ( Find A Grave.Com )website.
Their headstone is in the Crawfordsville IOOF Cemetery
at Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana.
Is it possible they both died while
visiting his daughter Mary Randolph Green who lived
in Crawfordsville? His son-in-law Solomon Green is also
buried there....
Jim Blackwell

Re: Isaac B. Randolph (1807-1891), brother of Henry

I think you have this correct. Have you learned anymore of this family since 2006?

Their brother Phillip, lived and died in Vigo Co IN. Their mother, Nancy, was living with Phillip when she died in 1849. Per her claim for her husband's pension, she was born in 1765.
In her husband, Henry's claim for the original Rev War pension, he was age 68 in 1819 so born about 1751. He died in Spencer Co KY in 1836.
