after 12 years I finally see this message. I had an auto mobile accident a few months after this post and it forever changed my life.

John Patterson Rankin's father was John Marcus. John's father was David Lee Rankin. His father was Robert Caldwell Rankin.

The dead end is at Robert Caldwell.

Of course, it is now easy to find a great deal of information on ancestry.

I did make a slight typo. I meant to say James Rankin was born in 1785 maine. However,he did have a son John that was born 12 Oct. 1812 in Brownville,Maine. This might be the same John or he might be a cousin. I would love to talk to you about what you know. I live in Mobile,Alabama. You can reach me at 251-209-6695.
Re: Myron Rankin of Dundee, MI

I guess that would make us second cousins once removed.

He has one neice that is still alive. She is in her nineties.

I was also at Myron's funeral. My father, Marshall Rankin, had helped him farm his land for a while. Myron or Uncle Mike, helped us out later when my father developed ALS. My father died roughly six months after Myron.

When William Henry Rankin,(AKA Henry Rankin), Myron's father, died in February of 1919, Myron became the Patriarch of the family. While his sisters Margaret,Grace,Blanche, and Henrietta were married and established, his mother was still alive and she lived with his sisters Alta, Amy, and Flora, and his brother Dewitt.

These three sisters had a number of life issues. His younger brother, Dewitt, cared for the three spinster sisters, until Dewitt's death roughly 25 years later when his car was struck by a train while driving home late at night.

Amy, Alta,Flora, and his mother Ursala, became his responsibility after that time, although Flora was close to Margaret Ciley, his sister.

His sister in law,Carrie, had died from pneumonia in 1927 and left his younger brother, Elmer ,crushed ,with 2 boys aged 16 and 8 at that time. Although while never quite the same,Elmer raised his sons alone and lived another 43 years.

Grace, one of his younger sisters, and Myron remained close. Grace's daughter, Margaret came over and kept house for him sometime in the 1930's for a while.Myron made a point of watching out for Grace and her family, and he made a point of talking to Grace's husband from time to time as family matters would require him to do so.

Myron's other brother Laverne, had 2 children, Howard and Elizabeth. Myron has GG and GGG nieces and nephews through Elizabeth.

Myron had one other sister, Mary, who died of whooping cough as an infant.

Basically, after 1919, a lot of responsibility found its way to Myron's capable hands. While not openly affectionate as I remember him, and as gruff as Margaret Fisk,Grace's daughter described him to me, I think we have the classic case of a man that tried to take care of his immediate and extended family as best he could, with the harshness of events grinding him down as time passed.

He did have some softness. The Kimpton family Reunion was held on his farm for a number of years. One of the featured events those days was square dancing. His sister Blanche, or Blanche's daughters ,Bonnie and Bertha called the dances.

There is one other item to note that I will relate that is fact, but it is not meant to hurt anyone, nor do I relate this to glorify myself.

Even though Myron died in June of 1959, the date of his death was not inscribed on his tombstone as late as May of 2005. I have never forgotten how he helped his younger brother,my grandfather, in 1958 and 1959 farm his land because his nephew, my father, could no longer farm Myron and Elmer's land as my father was completely paralyzed from ALS by mid 1958.

Myron, you see, had not farmed much for an extended time by then. Without Myron's help ( which included planting and harvesting) during this time, the results would have been catastrophic to Marshall's young family. Myron was 87 years old when he did this and he worked hard at it. Marshall's family, was and still remains, and shall ever be, grateful.

In 2005, I accumulated proof that I was Myron's nephew. Armed with a legal copy of his death certificate, I had a monument company carve his date of death on his tombstone as that had not been done at that time.

In the end, it was the least I could do to say thank you to my Great Uncle and to properly honor his memory.
I am a great-granddaughter of Myron Rankin. My grandmother, Myron's daughter, Eunice Louise, was my grandmother. Myron passed away while I was still a young girl but I remember going to his funeral. I remember times I stayed at his farm especially during the maple syrup season. How he used a horse and specially made wagon-tank to collect the sap and how he boiled it down in the woods then took it to my grandmother for the finial stage. I don't remember him being an affectionate man only his scruffy beard and bibbed overalls.
My mother was, Betty, daughter of Eunice. I am one of six children. My oldest brother carries Myron's name.

My great great grandfather named Jim (James) Holloway married a Bettie Rankin in Simpson County, MS around 1896. And as far as I know, they died there in that area as well, as my great grandfather and grandfather were also raised in Simpson County. The husband and wife were close in age, being born around circa early 1870s...

Ill have to check further into this as I know of many Rankins today, expanded all the way to Ohio.

Since I posted that note one of the Rankins descendants told me that John was born and married Lydia Rines in Lincolnville, Maine. I need to look at those vital records to verify it. Also, she said that John Rankins father was Robert Rankins who lived in Lincolnville, which on the American Rev. Pension Records Index is listed as Lincolndale. I downloaded the records and discovered that Robert Rankins did have a son John who was born in 1801 and that the town definitely was Lincolnville. It is possible that Robert Rankins was born in Winslow Maine. That is another thread I'll need to follow up on.

Roberta

Family of Francis Rankin & Margaret Fleming - Bellaghy, Londerry, Northern Ireland

I'm seeking information about the family of Francis Rankin & his wife, Margaret Fleming and their 3 sons, including William Rankin (DOB: circa 1866). The family lived in Bellaghy, Londerry, Northern Ireland circa 1860's to 1890. Francis Rankin apparently died as a result of the 'troubles' in Ireland. Shortly following his death his wife, Margaret, also died. 1 son [name unknown] apparently emigrated to Canada, another son [name unknown] apparently emigrated to New Zealand & the remaining son, William Rankin, emigrated to Brisbane, Queensland Australia. William married Sarah Mawhinney (also from Bellaghy) in Brisbane in December 1890. William Rankin is my Great Grandfather.

I am seeking any information about the Rankin & Fleming families and their current day descendants.

Mark Martin.
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
8 December 2011.

These (below) are the listings in "New York Marriages to 1784" for Rankin.

1780. Nov. 4. Rankin, Arabecca, and Edward Bayan, M.B., xxx. 91
1779. Sept. 25. Rankin, Mary, and Neal McMullian, M.B., xxviii. 83
1779. Sept. 4. Rankin, Sarah, and Daniel Wheaton, M.B., xxviii. 67

If anybody sees a possible connection with their family, I would like to know. Thanks !

Hi Angela

I am still researching this family and was wondering if you would still be willing to help?

My great-grandmother was Kathleen Sylvia Rinkin.

Sarah
sarah@janson.au.com

Re: Hannah Vanest MacLane Rankin-Deckert

Hi,

I just happened upon this somewhat old message and I think I can help. I believe that Hannah V. McL. Rankin is my great grand aunt. There is some confusion for me because according to another researcher there was a woman by the same name born in 1857 who married Lorenzo Snow Fite. She would be Hannah Rankin/Ranken Deckert's aunt.

Anyway, if I am right then Hannah is the sister of Mary Ann Rankin/Ranken my great grandmother who married James Francis Kirkman, Andrew R (Uncle Rhocy?)Ranken who married Annabelle and William Henry Patterson Ranken who married Delma Fifer.

Their parents were: Andrew R Ranken born about 1848 in Philadelphia and died 26 Oct 1912 in Philadelphia though he was a resident of Atlantic City at the time and Mary Catherine Thomas who was born in Ashland Kentucky on 7 Mar 1855 (according to her death certificate) and died 14 Feb 1936 in Pennsauken.

Andrew R Ranken's father was Alexander C Ranken born about 1815 in Pennsylvania and died 7 May 1875 in Philadelphia. He is said to be the grandson of Thomas Rankin who was a famous Methodist preacher and new Wesley. I have no proof of that but a descendant of Hannah Rankin Fite told me that was the family lineage. His mother was Sarah Hubbard, a Quaker, who was born about 1828 probably in Philadelphia and died 9 Jul 1876 in Philadelphia. They were both buried in American Mechanics Cemetery which is now defunct.

Mary Catherine Thomas' parents again according to her death certificate were Thomas Thomas and Mary both from Wales. I have nothing more on them and cannot find them on the census mostly because it is far too common a name.

I hope you see this response as I would love to confirm that there is a connection between the two families. I do remember making a note of Andrew and Mary Catherine having a daughter named Hannah but since she slips between the 1880 and 1900 censuses I was not sure if it was correct or where I got the information.

Also as a note the spelling of the surname Rankin seems to switch from Ranken to Rankin depending on the source and I am not sure which one to call "correct". I believe it may have changed in different family lines.

Alison
