My grandfather's surname was Rankin/s. In the 1880 census, this family is living in various parts of Bourbon County, Kentucky. I have no idea where Henry Rankins who was my great grandfather, lived prior to that. His father's name was John Rankins.

My grandfather James had the following siblings: Jess, John, Ben, Wiilie, Lewis, Fannie, Mae, Meecie, Elijah, Louis

Please respond if any of this is familiar to you.

Nancy

I am also looking for African Americans with the Surname of Rankin/Rankins. I have gone back as far as 1845 with the birth of my gggg Grandfather Allen Rankin, he was born in Mississippi, but according to the 1870 Census, his father was born in Virgina and his mother in North Carolina. GP Allen wife's first name was Lavinia, but there is no listing of her maiden name. He eventually moved to Arkansas, which is where most of his descendnts currently reside. I can't find any mre information beacuse he was borned into slavery and the records get kinda of murky then. If anyone thinks they may be related, please let me know.

His name is spelled Rankin, but by 1900 and "s" was added to the name.

No, I've not heard that but I've never been able to get beyond Franklin's dad, William, so this is new territory to me. Mom has always said we had everything in our family from blacks to "Klan" and back again. It wouldn't surprise me if there were Cherokee too.

I see the 1850 census shows Samuel being from PA. Have you been able to confirm this or know where in PA?

I also am searching for information on Dosia (Dosea) Rankins and Thomas Riley. I have some info on Dosia as a child within her family. I can send you a copy of the marriage license to Thomas Riley if you still need it. I am not able to find them after the 1910 census but have been told that Dosia died and is buried near Ola, Arkansas. I cannot even find Thomas or the children after that date. Are you connected on the Rankins or the Riley side of the family?

Sandy, I cannot tell you when Steven Rankins married Nancy L. Hooper but can tell you that she is buried in the Hooper Farm cemetery in Logan County, Arkansas, and her tombstone reads "August 13, 1878 - Jan. 1, 1896". I do have a copy of their divorce.

S. C. Rankins, 23, married Charlottey Loveall, 17, on Nov. 16, 1879. The marriage is recorded in Marriage Book B, page 184, at the Logan County Courthouse in Booneville, Arkansas. They were married by W. N. Williams, Justice of the Peace. I also have a copy of their divorce.

Hope this helps. Emma

Sandy, I'll be glad to go out to the cemetery and take a picture of Nancy L. Hooper's grave and also to send you copies of anything I have on her and Steven, however, my computer recently crashed big time and I am currently using the computer at the public library here (which is only three blocks from my home so is not really inconvenient). The Library does not allow you to scan pictures on their computers though, so I will need a snailmail address. I know you probably hate to post that for security reasons. Would you feel comfortable faxing it to the Libary here? The Fax # is 1-479-675-0463. It would be pretty secure to do that I think and then I would have it and could mail you copies of the paperwork. I am in the library every day as I do volunteer work for them by coming in and helping the genealogy researchers who are here from out of State. You decide if you feel secure doing that and let me know. Emma

Tracy, we corresponded a couple of years ago but I seem to have lost contact with you. One day this past week I was looking at some old family photos and I found a small one of Carroll Dean Rankins and his sister, Brenda, as teenagers. I think Brenda is still living in Oklahoma. Carroll Dean may have died in Texas but he was living in Oklahoma the last time I saw him. I have a photo of him and his wife with my dad but dad has been dead about 15 years and I have heard nothing of Carroll Dean since then. Carroll Dean did have four sons and I think they have an a business in Texas...something to do with autos. This is not much to go on but perhaps it will tie in with something else you've learned since we talked last.

Mattie's father, as you know, was Thomas Jefferson Terry, who married Mary Elizabeth Thomas Brookshire. He was the son of Caroline Rankins and William Terry. I am trying to find William's birth/marriage/death dates and Thomas Jefferson's siblings names etc. I believe I received most of my Terry/Brookshire information from you years ago through the old fashioned "snail" mail. Great to find you online. Cousin, Nancy

Emma I think I have been in contact with you previously re Dosia and Thomas. They were my maternal grandmother's parents. You are correct that Dosia is buried near Ola and would love to know where. They were the parents of Carrie, Lavina (Aunt Tommy), Roy, and Ada. The family moved to Hot Springs after Dosia's death and Thomas married Lucie Sears. My grandmother Carrie married Dave Kelley, and her sister Tommy married Bill Kelley, Dave's brother. They were the sons of Elijah Kelley. Carrie and Dave had eight children and moved from Hot Springs to Henryetta, Oklahoma in 1927. Roy went on to California and Tommy and Ada moved to Odessa, TX. I was at your library two years ago this September and stopped by but you were gone to I believe Texas?? I had just lost my husband and had to get away and went to Magazine and on over to Booneville where I got a copy of Dosia and Thomas's marriage license. Would love to know something about each of their families but have met a dead end. My grandmother told me that Thomas was a Deputy US Marshal and came in to Indian Territory to pick up prisoners and took them back to Fort Smith. I am unable to document this however. My e-mail address is steelejhhs60@aol.com.
