YES!!! John was my great-grandfather! I still have the carpenter's box with his tools that he took on the boat when he left Ireland! He met a Sophie Pederson (Petterson?)from Stockholm on the ship and married her. They settled in Potter, South Dakota, giving birth to my Grandad, William (Bill) Raphael, and his sister, Anna Mae. Would love to share more. I would also love to Learn more!!! I have Mary's family Bible with names of Raphael brothers and sisters in Ireland. Thank you!

They were all very helpful to me in my research. Lolly was especially helpful because she interviewed Sol in the 1970s for genealogy research and shared it with me,

Have not looked at this site for a long while, but have always been interested in finding origins of my family, especially as I may be one of the last of my branch.
William Raphael, b. abt. 1823, was my great-great grandfather. I know that he married a Mary Barnes who was born about 1828. I have names of all their children...one was John, my great-grandfather who came to US in late 1800's. Places of marraige, birth etc. associated with family are Galgorm, Ahoghill, Balleymena. I know John was a carpenter, according to my Dad, and I still have toolbox brought from Antrim. Family also carried with them a number of double damask linens. Were they related to the weavers? Would appreciate any and all information! Not many people respond to "Raphael" inquiries. My Uncle said once, long ago, they had been Jewish. Is this also correct? Thank you.....S. Raphael-Vinci

Hello! My name is Sunny Raphael. I do not have the notes I have made over the years with me, but will send you the names and dates from the family Bible from Antrim....not much to go on.
John was my great-grandfather. His father was William Raphael, born around 1828, I believe in Antrim. He married a Mary Barnes. Children's births were born with notations such as "Galgorm, Balleymena, Portaglennone". Would appreciate any information. I believe I am about the last of the Raphaels from this line here. Found a cousin in Los Angeles about a year ago. I had met her when I was a child. Family was dispersed after Great Depression.
An Uncle, now dead many years, said that distant past held that the family line were Jews who moved to Northern Ireland to escape persecution, then converted along the line. My grandfather refused to talk about it. I am not a researcher....just happy for any information to pass to my kids. I still have John's carpenter tools in a wooden box that he brought with him to U.S. in a wooden box..... Thank you for any input!~
My great great grandfather was James Raphael, born to John and Jane Raphael in about June 1836, likely somewhere near Ballymena. He emigrated to Canada in 1854.
I have a number of fragments of trees of Raphael prior to this time - none fit my James.
Do you have some date information on William that would allow me to see if he is in any of the fragments?
My work in Antrim has essentially become a one name study- because there are so few Raphaels. I am inteersted in all Raphaels in Antrim.

Hello, cousin! I have recently been put in touch with Candace Dack through Facebook. Most research has been done by her daughter, Tiah, I think. I am William's grandaughter
as well. I have Mary Barnes Raphael's Bible (the first William's wife in Antrim, with some names and dates if you are interested. Younger Bill's family (married Golda/Goldie) were Wayne (my father, deceased), Burnell (never married, deceased) and Fern, whom you know of. If you would like to see my Facebook page or leave a message it is under RAPHAEL VINCI ART. Would look forward to hearing from you. Do you know any more about the family in Antrim? Thank you Sunia Raphael Vinci

Here is what I have learned about my Raphael family... their "real" surname was Kimche. My great great grandfather's given name was Raphael and some of the children took the name Raphaelson when they came to US and then later shorted it to Raphael. Most of them had yiddish given names that also got chanced. There was a Rivka (not sure on spelling) but I'm not sure if she immigrated to the US. I'll have to go back through my docs if you think this is the connection and see if I have any futher info. My family lived in Grodno which was concidered both Lithuania and Russia at different times. Hope this helps.
glha01

Susan, I believe we are related and do not know where to start but everything you wrote matches to my family history; locations, jobs, number of siblings (only one daughter, Annie). Morris married a Rose Benston and I have the birth certificate of, I believe, the youngest son Joseph, who is my grandfather. He was born on Aug 1, 1878 and they lived at 11 Wilk (could be Wilkes Street now) Street, Spitalfields, Whitechapel, England. My grandfather Joe has businesses in Atlantic City and lived in Philadelphia for a while (where my father, Norman was born) and in Patterson, NJ (I think just during WWII and where I was born). After a short while the family moved back to Atlantic City around 1947 or so.
Morris was a taylor and one of his sons became a big mortician in Philly, one was a police officer (Ed, I believe), a plumber (Izzy). I most likely could remember all the brothers with a bit of research. Of all the 6 or 7 sons of Morris and Rose only one, my grandfather, had a son. Well there was one other but he died young and never married. Two of the brothers Joe and Izzy married 2 sister Mary (my grandmother) and Bessie. Both of the sisters were Rappoports and my grandmother always said she was from Kiev. My grandfather said his father or grandfather was in the Russian army, deserted and was kept hidden for a time by a bar maid somewhere in Russia. He did get out and made his way to England and she followed some time later to his chagrin. That what I heard, truth, who knows? If I had the opportunity all over again I would of listened and asked many many questions.
Jerome (Jerry) Raphael
jerry@raphaelwebscapes.com
It is not correct to say all the Rayfields were in Kent before 1910. I have seen a baptism record in the Family Records Office which notes that Richard Rayfield was christened in 1794 in the presence of his parents, Thomas & Elizabeth Rayfield. Thomas was my ggggrandfather and all this took place at St. James' Church, Clerkenwell, London an area in which there were a few Rayfield families living from then to about 1880, when they appeared to have moved away to other parts of the UK as well as Australia, Canada and the USA.

Although the dates are not the same, somes names and places are, so our ancestors may have been cousins. I, too, am searching for Raphaels from Antrim (Ahoghill, Portaglennone, Ballymena, Galgorm). My GG-Grandfather was William Raphael born abt. 1823, his wife was Mary Barnes.
His son, John (my grandfather) left Antrim in late 1880's to SD in US. I think William died there, but don't know for sure. Williams children in my branch were: John, Margret, Ellen Jane, David, Samuel, Anna Jane, Lizzie. Would love to solve the mystery of why we have a Hebrew name. John was a carptenter/woodworker. I still have his toolbox from Ireland.Family may have ties to weaving business. I also have several very old fine linen Damask tablecloths. Would enjoy any input. srv

I'm looking for information of Louis Raphael & Sarah Rhoades who settled in Kirkville, Iowa. Family stories say Louis originally came from Illinois & settled in Iowa & had a few children, one of which is my great grandfather.

Sarah passed away a few weeks after giving birth to my great grandfather. I was able to find a record of a tombstone in the Kirkville Cemetery:

Sadie Raphael
Born: October 20, 1865
Died: July 18, 1899.

If you happen to have any information regarding this line it would be much appreciated as I haven't been able to make any headway for years.

Thanks!

Oscar Lacurtis Lytle is Afro-American born in 1902 to James C. Lytle and Viola Lott. Both of his parents were born in the state of Texas. . .

Oscar L. Lytle had one sister named DORIS LAZELLE LYTLE, she married Jessie L. Taylor in Texas. . .

Oscar L. Lytle married Miss Ida Raphael, she was born in California. In 1927 they had a son named EUGENE JAMES LYTLE, who was born in Los Angeles County, California. . .

I have been working on my family-tree, and found one of my descendants named LETITIA EDWARDS who married into the LYTLE family. She married Charles F. Lytle, who I believe is the brother of James C. Lytle. . .

My descendant Letitia (Edwards) Lytle and her husband Charles F. Lytle owned and managed a Funeral Home in Victoria, Texas. I believe it was named Lytle Funeral Home. . .

In 1970 Letitia (Edwards) Lytle died, she was listed as the Funeral Director of the Home. Please contact me if you are related to Ida Raphael and Oscar L. Lytle. Thank you.

However, i've found no other records of an abraham raphael at that time in that part of the world. Do you know anything more about Abraham and Leah that may make it more obvious whether or not we've got the same abraham?
Inbal

I realise i'm responding to a very old thread but...
I am a descendent of Max and Rachel Raphael from Kowal, Poland. The story goes that max settled in Darlington, England, having followed over his brother David who came some time earlier. I think that Abraham David Raphael (buried with Max in Stockton cemetery) is that brother. Abraham married a Leah Sape from Leeds and lived there for a time, although as he was buried in Stockton it suggests he moved back north in later years. I have a photograph of who i think is Abraham from the 1920s. According to Abraham and Leah's marriage records, his father was Joseph.
I know that max and david/abraham were from a large family but i don't know how many of them left Poland.
I don't know if these are related Raphaels but i thought i'd try!
Hello,

I have a Louisa Maclaren as a great grandmother, who was married to Thomas Raphael. My grandmother was Annie-Louisa Raphael. We know there was a brother Victor Love Raphael, among others. Gordon Stewart Raphael married Euphemia Mcleod

You posted this message some years ago, are you still listed/active here?

L

Susan,
I wrote to you yesterday but don't see my posting listed so excuse me if you've gotten this twice. This may be a different posting by you. I am also looking into the Raphael family. My grandmother's maiden name was Raphael. She also was from Russia and moved to NY. She had a brother Sam and William and an Uncle Abe. Her mother's name (my great grandmother) was Anna Raphaelson. They shorten their name at some point. All my cousin's go by Raphael. My mom had a cousin Francies Rose who was Abe's daughter.
Gilda
