Do you have any information on William and/or Matilda Curtis Ratcliffe......born probably in the 1780's......married in 1804-5. Had one son, James, born in 1806. His genealogy is a bit messed up too.......but William Ratcliffe and Matilda Curtis Ratcliffe seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth.
Welcome to my confused world. I, too, am looking for William Ratcliffe and Matilda Curtis Ratcliffe..........have been looking for them for many years. They were born probably in the 1780's and married in 1804-5. Had one son James, born in 1806. Then they disappeared.....no information before and no information after. Thought maybe one of them died shortly after the birth of their son. Matilda would have been the likely one and it was quite common for the mother to die after the birth of a child. James (the son of william and Matilda) grew up, married, fathered 4 children, two of whom were born in Rouen France where he went for work with the railroad they were building. Couple of days ago I found a William Ratcliffe who died in Rouen France in 4th quarter of 1854. I felt sure he was my ancestor. Then I couldn't find where I found his death information. Anyone out there who is also lost in searching for RATCLIFFE.

Thomas & Sarah (Ashworth) Ratcliffe & family emigrated from Lancashire to Rhode Island 1869/70. Trying to find information on their son Thomas born 1869 in England. No trace after 1890s BUT mother's census details suggest he was still alive into 1920s. Have a marriage to Elizabeth Jane Robinson 1892 this ended in divorce. Anyone any info?

Looking for information for family of Thomas Ratcliffe, born about 1810 in Rodsley, Derbyshire. He was son of William Ratcliffe (born circa 1765) and had several siblings; no mother's name confirmed yet. He worked as a tailor according to census information, in Derbyshire. He was widowed (wife unknown) prior to his marriage to Rebecca Gregson (nee Holloway.) It is believed he fathered her two youngest children, Ralph and Thomas, although they may not have married until after the births. Ralph was a police officer convicted of perjury and sent to prison in 1879; nothing further is known of him. I am descended through Thomas' son Thomas (born March 1851) who came to Canada in 1879 with his wife, Annie Edwards Hopwood.

Hello Debbie
I'll look into my files and see what i can find but are you sure YOUR William was born in BASFORD or was it that his birth was REGISTERED there?? If you got the birth reference from the general birth registers then the ref' to Basford refers to the Registry office in Nottingham & registrations there cover a large area.
So if i understand correctly you have a William born circa 1877 who married an 'Amelia' (surmane??) and amoungst their sons was your g/dad Frank??

Hello fellow Ratcliffe researchers.
I am no longer a subscriber to Ancestry because of the ridiculous amount it had increased for renewal this year. I am happy to receive e-mails to my personal account at andreanewham@hotmail.com.
To recap - i have Ratcliffes from BELPER, Dbys c1800s who then moved into Derby with the railways. I suspect one of my early 20th century RATCLIFFEs emigrated to Vancouver BC and had children by the name of Thelma, Edna, Clifford and Gordon. Unfortunately it may have been a female RATCLIFFE in which case the surname is unknown (but possibly SPENCER)!

Hi Jeannine,
I just got the message that you sent 6 years ago. It was in reply to the following post that I left in 2000.

"I am looking for my mothers lineage in the Ratcliffe family. My only information is George R. Ratcliffe, who died in Stewartville, MN in the late 40's. He was the son of Charles Foster Ratcliff and Harriet Kinion(Kenyon). Other children of charles and Harriet were Charles Milton, Robert William, Silas, Anna, James, and Susie. I am so new at this that I can offer no immediate help, but would appreciate any infor you may have on the ancestry of these relatives."
You said that your grandmother was Anna Radcliff. Have you found information saying that your Anna, and my Anna are the same person. I would love to hear from you.
Annette

Re: Ratcliffe Geneology

From an article in ancestry.com:

By custom during the middle ages, and later by law through granting authorities, an individual coat of arms belonged to one man only, being passed from him to his male-line descendants. There is, therefore, no such thing as a coat of arms for a surname.

Basically, it is one man, one arms, a reminder of the origin of heraldry as a means of instant recognition in the thick of battle. Because of this descent of coats of arms through families, heraldry is very important to genealogists, providing evidence of family relationships. Of special significance: Cadency - The sons in each generation inherit the paternal shield, but alter it slightly in a tradition known as cadency with the addition of some mark which, in theory at least, is perpetuated in their branch of the family. The eldest son also follows this tradition, but reverts back to the paternal coat of arms upon the death of his father.

I am trying to trace a man named Thomas Ratcliffe, born 1904 in Northumberland and died around 1980.

He married an Annie Smart, born 1907 in the Durham area. Apparently he was a caretaker at a school or something?

I am struggling to trace their parents for some reason. Annie's parents might have been an Edward Smart and Hannah Jane Pickering, but I am not sure.

Any help appreciated!

Perhaps someone can help me with one of my brickwalls?? I am trying to find a RATCLIFFE family member who emigrated to Canada from Derby and settled in Vancouver working in the logging industry in the early 20th century. I was told it was a RATCLIFFE male who went there with his family and they were called Cis & Ted and children as above. Ive since discovered a Ratcliffe sister called Bertha (p'raps therefore k/a Sis???) joined her husband Edward (Ted)HUDSON in Toronto in 1913 but her children had different names including Ethel and Edward and she died 6 months later from pneumonia. So my 'other' family remain a mystery - does anyone recognise anything at all?? Another name connected with our Ratcliffes is SPENCER and i have photos of the family with one annotated 'our eldest Edna'!

Is it possible that he was born in Hatcliffe Lincolnshire? Looking at what I presume is the 1871 census record for Thomas Amott that you're working from, it looks like it says "Ratcliffe, Lincolnshire". A gazeteer I use lists a Hatcliffe in Lincolnshire.
