Dear Richard:

Thank you for your reply. Where did your Rathsack's settle when they arrived? I am wondering if Herman possible settled in the same area, died shortly thereafter, and his wife then moved to Sangamon Co IL to be close to her side of the family. We can find no death or burial records for him in Sangamon Co.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated

John Boehme

Are you looking for information on him in Germany or in the U.S.? If in Germany, you should look for him in the ships' passenger lists. Many of our Rathsacks lived in Mecklenburg or Prussia and emigrated through Hamburg. The Hamburg lists have survived and are available on Ancestry. They provide valuable information on the passengers' origins in Germany.

BTW, my Rathsack ancestors immigrated in 1856 also. They left Hamburg on the bark "Elise Rübcke" and arrived in New York City on 3 Aug 1856 after a voyage of about 7 weeks. There is no record of this voyage in the New York Passenger Lists but I was able to find it in the Hamburg lists and also in the Marine Intelligence column of the New York Times.

Good luck with your search!
Richard

I am seeking info on Dr. Herman Rathsack, married to Mary Ann Sophia Boehme in Germany. Immegrated to the US in 1856. He apparently died sometime in late 1857, possibly in Sangamon Co. IL. I can find his probate, opened on Dec 22 1857, in Sangamon Co, but date of death "rumored" to be Sept 1857???

Any info would be appreciated.

I believe I was Clarence William Rathsack III (third) so yeah, maybe. I'd love to hear anything you have regarding my father - I know nothing except he was maybe Air Force? As far as I'm concerned I've never met him - was much too young to remember...Best Regards!!

Bill,

I'm sorry you never received my email message. I don't have a copy of it anymore, but I doubt it would have helped you find your biological father. I simply did not know that much about "recent" (i.e. post-1930) Rathsacks at the time.

Check out the excellent family trees on Ancestry by Jennifer Hatch and bwakma_1 if you haven't already.
I see I left out a date on the Louise A. Rathsack-William C. Burkhart marriage (#6 on my list). That marriage took place on 16 Jan 1892 in Manitowoc.

It occurs to me that you could copy your old photos with a digital camera without removing them from the album and risking damage to them. Most digital cameras have a close-up (or 'Macro') setting that allows you to get quite close to the subject, and the album pages could be held flat with a piece of glass if even focus across the page is a problem (depth of focus being much reduced when shooting close-ups). Just a thought.

Richard

I'm excited about this photo album of yours. I have no photos of the early Manitowoc Rathsacks.

Here are some 19th Century RATHSACK marriage dates:

1. Johanna Maria Friedericka Rathsack m. Julius MEYER bet. 1863-64. She moved to Chicago with him.

2. Carl Ludwig Friedrich Rathsack m. Lizsetta LENZ 6 Apr 1868 in Chicago. She moved to Manitowoc with him.

3. Wilhelm Friedrich August Rathsack m. Anna WEBER 25 Oct 1875 in Manitowoc. The birth dates of their first 2 children pre-date this marriage date.

4. Lucinde Maria Friedericka Rathsack m. Andrew CHRISTOFFERSON 6 Nov 1876 in Manitowoc.

5. Carl Christian August Rathsack m2. Louisa KUHFELD 7 Jul 1879 in Manitowoc. This was Carl Christian's 2nd marriage.

6. Louise A. Rathsack [child of Carl & Lizsetta Lenz] m. William C. BURKHART in Manitowoc.

7. Anna C. Rathsack [child of Wilhelm & Anna Weber) m. Arthur BEM ca. 1892 in Manitowoc.

8. William Carl Rathsack [child of Wilhelm & Anna Weber] m. Louise M. NEILLS 3 Jun 1893 in Manitowoc.

9. Adele M. Rathsack [child of Carl & Lizsetta Lenz) m. Andrew J. KAMM 31 Mar 1896 in Manitowoc.

10. Louis Carl Rathsack [child of Wilhelm & Anna Weber) m. Clara HOYER c. 1899 in Manitowoc.

NOTE that Dr. Falge, in his "History of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin," gives a 1 Aug 1876 date for Wilhelm Rathsack's marriage to Anna Weber. This, like most dates in his book, should be taken with a grain of salt. The 25 Oct 1875 date comes from the Wisconsin Pre-1907 Marriage Index.

Please keep in touch,
Richard

I haven't scanned them yet because they are in a very old photo album and hard to take out. I'm also afraid of getting them out of order. I think there may be significance to the way the photos are arranged. The album starts with three wedding photos. I thought they might be Christian and Louise's childerns photos. Johanna Rathsack married probably around 1867 (Do you have exact date?), Carl married around 1874 (again, I don't have exact date), Wilhelm married in 1876. Daughter Levina - I don't have any marriage for her. I will do some scans after the 4th of July holiday and e-mail to you.

Welcome to the RATHSACK message board! I have one cabinet print by Melendy & Packard from the late-1860s - 1870s, a portrait of Rosa STAUSS, my grandmother's godmother. I'd love to see your photos. Have they been scanned? Can you post them to a web page or (better yet) send copies via email?

Let me know if you'd like information on Wilhelm Rathsack's parents, Carl Christian August Rathsack (1811-1901) and Maria Louisa Friedericka TIMM (1813-1873). I'm always willing to share genealogical information.

Richard

My husband's grandmother was Esther Anne (Rathsack) Anderson (1894-1988). She was the daughter of William Karl Rathsack (1869-1944) and Maria Louise Niels(a.k.a. adopted last name of Gelbke)(1871-1935). William Karl Rathsack's parents were Wilhelm Rathsack and Anna Weber.

I have a family picture of Wilhelm and Anna. I also have other pictures that I think are Rathsacks from about 1866 - 1874 and later. The pictures are taken by Melendy and by Melendy and Packard and some other photographers in Wisconsin. Anybody else have identified pictures from early time period?

I'm delighted to make your acquaintance. You and I are 3rd cousins once removed. Here's the connection:

My father's mother was Rose T. RATHSACK (1886-1974) of Manitowoc, WI. Her parents were Carl Rathsack (1848-1930) and Lizsetta LENZ (1851-1927). Carl had a twin brother named Wilhelm (1848-1921) who married Anna WEBER (1845-1908). One of their children was Louis Carl Rathsack (1874-1943) who married Clara HOYER (1879-1959) around 1899. Your grandfather, Clarence W. Rathsack (1901-1969) was their son.

Please contact me privately if you'd like more information.

Richard Johnson

New online resource for Rathsack researchers

Many of our Rathsack ancestors came from Mecklenburg. Now there's a new online database, indexed by first & last names, year & place of birth, place of residence etc., to help you research this area: the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Census of 1819 available on Ancestry.com. A quick search for 'Rathsack' and the most common spelling variations --Radsach/k, Ratsach/k etc. -- turned up over 240 hits. (Unfortunately, my Rathsacks weren't among them since they lived in Alt Kentzlin, a few kilometers from the Mecklenburg border in Prussia.)

This is a valuable resource. Far more information is given about each family member than in the 1867 Mecklenburg-Schwerin Census, including (in most cases) exact dates of birth. You'll need a World Deluxe Ancestry membership to access it, but this can be obtained on a monthly basis for $29.95. The usual disclaimer applies: I have no connection with Ancestry.com except as a subscriber.

Good hunting!
Dick Johnson
Whitewater, WI, USA

Hi Richard. I was born a Rathsack (Clearance William Rathsack). I was placed in foster homes at such a young age I don't remember my biological family. I was adopted by the Peots when I was 8 and changed my name to William Robert. I know my grandmother lived in Manitowoc and I know my mother's name was/is Leona. I'm trying to find my biological father. I don't know his name but he and my mother are divorced....I suspect I was placed in foster care when they were divorced. I was born 3-6-63...not sure where since my birth certificate was doctored when I was adopted....it says Madison, WI but who knows. I would be greatful if there's any info you can provide. thanks!

Hi Sarah:

Per the SSDI, Quintin Rathsack was born 17 Oct 1924 and died March 1978.

In the 1930 U.S. Census, he was living with parents Joseph J. and Elsie A.; and sisters Elaine and Carmen M. Rathsack in Greenville Township, Outagamie County, WI (ED44, Sheet 11B). Elsie's maiden name was apparently STANDINGER since a man by that name was living with them and is identified as Joseph Rathsack's brother-in-law. A middle initial is given for Quintin: "R".

Though by no means certain, it is probable that Joseph J. Rathsack's parents were Anton and Julia who were enumerated under the surname RATZAK in the 1900 U.S. Census for Franklin Township, Manitowoc County, WI (ED 66, Sheet 16). Joseph's siblings, Walter and Gertha (=Bertha?), were enumerated then as well.

I did not look for them in the 1910 or 1920 Censuses, but this information should get you started on your own research. Please feel free to contact me if you need help or require additional detail. So far as I know, these people are not related to my branch of the Rathsack family.

Cordially,
Dick Johnson
