Francis Marion Ratliff, Morgan County, Ky

Hello,

My great-great-great-grandmother was Lou Ellen Ratliff, born 1879 in Morgan County, KY, died 1933 in Danville, IL.
Her father was Francis Marion Ratliff. All I know about him is from the 1880 Federal Census (born abt. 1837 in VA, parents born in VA, was a blacksmith & farmer), and that he was married Jan. 25, 1878, in Morgan County to Polly Ross. I cannot find anything else about him before his marriage and after 1880. Does anyone know anything more about him or about his parents? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Ryan

Re: Ratliff / Indiana

The information I have for Ratliff's of Indiana is minimal. The ittle ancestry information that I have found so far, appears to be wrong or possibly cross referenced incorrectly. At best, it is very confusing.

I started my search with the name of my father, Charles Richard Ratliff. I also used information that I remember from my childhood experiences and the few family discussions that were had regarding the subject.

I think I was told as a fact that my brother, Ronald Wilson Ratliff, was given the same middle name our grandfather; my father's father, so I used that to help in my search. I was always told by my father that there is a Kentucky connection to our ancestry, although I can't remember the details of exactly what that connection is. My father also told me that our family has Native American heritage, specifically, Cherokee. I was told that my father's mother was half Cherokee and that her mother was full Cherokee.

What I have found follows, however, the information that I am not 100% confident with, I have clearly referenced as such. I hope that some of it will help you also, and if it does, I would like to discuss it with you.

My father, Charles Richard Ratliff, was born on April 6, 1943 in, I believe, Wayne County, Michigan (picture attached). His immediate family always referred to him by the nickname 'Buddy'. He usually was referred to by everyone else, by his middle name Richard, although close friends sometimes referred to him by the name Dick.

Charles Richard Ratliff married Marilyn Kay Shidler of Goshen, Indiana and, although I don't know the exact year, I think that my father was around twenty years old and my mother was around eighteen years old. I believe that they were married at the court house in the town of Goshen, Indiana in the county of Elkhart. Because of this, and other reasons, no wedding announcements (newspaper, etc.) were ever issued.

Charles Richard and Marilyn Kay Ratliff had two chilren both of whom were born at Goshen Hospital in Goshen, Indiana in the county of Elkhart.

Charles' and Marilyn's first child was a son, born on March 5, 1963 that they named Ronald Wilson Ratliff, also known as 'Ronnie' or 'Ron'. Ronald died on October 7, 1990 at the U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, county of Sacramento, California at the age of twenty-seven. He was never married and had no children.

Their second child (me) was also a son, born on November 3, 1964 that they named Rory Wade Ratliff. At the time of this writing, he was living in the city of Laguna Niguel in the county of Orange, California. Also at the time of this writing, he was not married and had no children.

The Charles Richard and Marilyn Kay Ratliff family lived in Goshen until Marilyn attempted to divorce Charles in, I believe, 1967. In that same year, I also believe, Charles Richard and Marilyn Kay Ratliff 'agreed to drop' the divorce case and they, along with their two sons, moved to San Pedro, California in Los Angeles County.

Note: I was told by both of my parents that the Judge overseeing their divorce case was very conservative and 'frowned' upon such proceedings. It is also my understanding that, at the time, my parents were priveledged to be the first contested divorce case in Goshen, Indiana. Because of these reasons, the Judge told my parents that he would permit the divorce, but that my brother and I would be 'taken away'. He also said to my parents that they could 'keep' us both if the divorce case was dropped, but, that we as a family would need (be required) to move from the area.

Charles Richard Ratliff and Marilyn Kay Ratliff eventually obtained a divorce in the county of Orange, California.

Charles eventually returned to live in Goshen, Indiana where he died August 1, 1999. He never remarried or had any other children.

I'm fairly sure Charles Richard Ratliff's father's name was Woodrow Wilson Ratliff who was born on January 30, 1920, however the exact day may be incorrect. Woodrow Wilson Ratliff was married to Charles Richard Ratliff's mother but, I am not sure of her name and other information because I believe I was told that she died when Charles was about fifteen years old. I also believe that Woodrow had several other children with Charles' mother. Woodrow Wilson Ratliff also served in the Army during WWII (see the picture attached which is unreadable).

I believe Woodrow Wilson Ratliff later remarried and his wife's name was Madie Hampton, although the name Madie Hampton, could be that of Charles' birth mother, Woodrow's first wife. I also believe that Woodrow and this wife had several children together. I know they lived in the town of Goshen in Elkhart County, Indiana and I am fairly sure they lived there from the time my father, Charles Richard Ratliff, was an adolescent and until their deaths.

Although I know the names of some of Woodrow Wilson Ratliff's children, my father Charles' siblings, I am unsure as to any of their maternal lineage. There were several sons, at least two others besides my father, as well as many daughters. The names of some of his daughters are Sharon, April (deceased, I believe), Dialene (also deceased, I believe), Carolyn Vivian who is always referred to by her middle name (not her first name) and Penny (also deceased, I believe).

Woodrow Wilson Ratliff died on January 14, 1971, however this exact day may also be incorrect. He was buried in a military gravesite in Elkhart County, Indiana (I believe - see the attached picture).

This is all the information that I have so far. Please let me know if it helps and if any of it fits into your ancestry.

Sincerily,

Rory Wade Ratliff

rorywr@msn.com
City of Laguna Niguel
County of Orange
California

Theresa,

The information on your post is very similar to the information I have been digging up on my ancestry, however, from the little info that I have found, it appears that some of it is wrong or has been cross referenced incorrectly, but, at best, is very confusing.

The facts that I started my search with are from information that I can remember from my childhood experiences and the few family discussions that my family had regarding the subject. Another fact is that my brother Ronald Wilson Ratliff, deceased and the first born of only 2 children, was given the same middle name our grandfather; his father's father.

The info that I believe pertains to my family history follows. Maybe some of it will help you also, at least if any of it seems pertinent. If it does, I would like to discuss it with you.

My father's name is Charles Richard Ratliff (picture attached). His family referred to him by the nickname 'Buddy'.
My Ratliffs came from Missouri at the end of the civil war. My dad only knew that his relative was brought by his mother from Missouri to hide during the war to Ark. We also have Cherokee blood, it has been told Martha Higginbothom was Cherokee which was my Dad's GrandMother. We haven't been able to find a lot that we can count on as truth during that period. Can you please give me the info you have that I might be able to connect to? James Roscoe Ratliff had two brothers, one William and one Briant. Do you know any of these names and can you put me on the Ratliff plantation track?

Thanks,
Beverly Ratliff Beymer

bb@john812.com

Have you found any more info on those people you listed?

My gg-grandma was a Ratliff from Lawerence County, Ohio too but I dont know her parents or siblings names.

On census records her last name is spelled both Ratliff and Ratcliff.

Her name was Sarah Jane Ratliff/Ratcliff born about 1840 and married William Justice born 1832 in kentucky. They had Susan Jane Justice in about 1870.

It seems impossible to find Sarah Jane Ratliff's parents and William JUstices' parents as well :(

Either both or one of them were Native Americans even though they say white on the census records. The family stories, physcial traits and my dad's dna profile prove that.

I am interested in more information on Moses Ratliff who was son of Silas. Moses was born around 1822 and married Susanna Stiltner. Their children included Peter (my great-grandfather), born around the beginning of the Civil War. Moses does NOT appear in the 1900 census, does appear in 1880, so I assume he died in the 20-year span between the two.

I thought that maybe your Lydia might be the mother of the Lydia married to William Murphy (my great great grandparents). I have since found the mariage bond and it shows Moses Ratlif signing for her. They were all from Green Co, Ky about the same time and ended up in the same area of Indiana about the same time. There is probably a connection somewhere but I have not figured it out. Do you show a Moses Ratliff related to your Archibald? Ratliffs also show up in Benton Co. Ark in the same area that William and 2nd wife lived. Thanks for the information.
Lydia Hedgespeth married Archibald Ratliff in 1813 in Green co, KY. Lydia died in Indiana around 1860. Their children were Ann, William, Reuben and Mary - who was my ancestor. Ratliff (possibly Stephen)
who was born in Alabama and married Malinda Knoles in Pontotoc Co Mississippi in 1855.
In the 1870 census children listed: Lydia (not Malinda's).
A.L.J., M.A.E., M.B.A. and J.E.S.P. all females.
I am researching the Knowles family and have come to a brick wall on this family.
Thanks for any help.

Lydia Ratliff

I am looking for information on the parents of Lydia Ratliff born about 1830 Green Co. Ky. Married William Murphy around 1848 and died in Indiana 1863. A Brown Co Indiana 1860 census shows an Archibald and Lydia Ratliff living in the same area with one son born in Kentucky. Does anyone know if these are her parents? Also several family trees show another Archibald and Lydia Ratliff living in Monroe Co. Indiana on an 1860 census. Different ages.

Hi Helen,

The oldest Ratliff that I have in my database is Nathan b1848. He was born in Mississippi. Then later moved or was moved to Louisiana. I don't have anyone from Natchitoches but that doesn't mean I shouldn't.

Appolo
