Hello, I am a first cousin three times removed to Peter Ravenstein. I would love to have your information. It sounds really interesting to me. I am researching for my Mother, she suffers from Alzheimers but remembers her relatives pretty well so it is good for her to find relatives. My Mom was born and raised in Bellmont, Wabash County.

My gggrandfather is Peter Ravenstein and I am from Wabash
Co. Illinois. Our family has passed down 4 pages of notes regarding Peter Ravenstein's family who immigrated in America in 1851 and settled in Wabash County, Illinois with
his 5 daughters and 1 son. They came from the Dollard Bay area where Holland and Germany join, (Ostfiesland, Germany). I'd be glad to share my information with anyone
that is interested.

Your welcome Audrey :-)

Maybee i'll put up a small webpage with a more detailed
and better english translation plus some pictures, since all the info is dutch only as far as I know.

Maybee someday i'll even try to figure out where the german link originates from, since i can understand most parts of the german language.

One correction on my previous post though;

The lord mentioned to which the city was named to, wasnt
named ".... van Walraven", but actually "Walraven van Valkenburg"

Which makes:

Walraven's castle (stein)
raven stein

His family (van Valkenburg) originates from a more southern
dutch city called .. Valkenburg ;-)

Greetings

Dear Jorrit,
Thank you for your information. My maiden name is Ravenstein and my research came up bits and pieces of the information that you provided but nothing put it all together as you have. My Ravenstein ancesters came from near Emden in the Dollart Bay area and I have always wondered it they originally came from the Ravenstein area in Holland.

Thanks again,
Audrey Bramel

My name is Ravenstein and I came to Canada from Holland in 1955. Our family is actually typically dutch... whatever that means... at least as far as I know, and not Jewish. (But our family did hide some Jewish people during WW2) There actually is a small town (city) in Holland also by that name.

Ravenstein

I am a Ravenstein and after having done extemsive research with our family tree, I agree that the origin of the name can be confusing. From what our family has learned the area that we originate from was indeed at times Dutch, but the name is officially considered German. I have a German friend who agrees with that assessment also. Ravenstein, in Germany is what Rand McNally and Monopoly are here in the US. Ravenstein is a large map and board game company. And yes, there is a castle and college of that name, a town too I might add. I was told that names don't follow the same rules as what we think. Someone may have a name simply because they are from a town by that name. So John who moves to Paris from Ravenstein, but thereafter be known as John Ravenstein. Confusing at best when trying to find info. Anyway, we have a large family reunion each October in Kingman, Kansas and if you would like to know dates , perhaps you could attend and bring your geneology material. Mine is way too large to send anywhere.
You may e-mail me at sally.j.nellor@sprintmail.com
