Hi Corie,

It has been awhile since I have contacted you. There will be a Grimes family reunion scheduled for June 25, 2011 in Plymouth, MN. This is for the descendants of the three original Grimes families that came to Jessenland in Sibley County, MN.

Your Michael Grimes and Anne (Nancy) Raverty were from one familiy that mostly stayed in Jessenland. The other two (Edward Grimes and Mary Jane Reynolds and William Thomas Grimes and Catherine Doheny (my ggrandparents) moved to Sleepy Eye in Brown County.

So the reunion includes the Ravertys which means you and yours. The reunion headquarters will be at the Red Roof Inn in Plymouth.

We have been trying to contact Lisa Strunk but understand she moved to ND

Bill Grimes

Corie, this is John Parker, and I'm interested in a reference you made in this thread to one of my ancestors, Mary O'Neil Kehoe. I have never seen Kehoe associated with Mary before and wonder what you can tell me. Also, you ruined my day when you identified the picture of Peter Raverty as a son of George and Hannah rather than Patrick and Mary (my ancestors.) I am envious that you live in Patricks home and wonder if you have other photos of the Ravertys or a copy of Patrick's obituary.
John

Many, many thanks for posting this photo. It is either the son of George Raverty married to Hannah Merkley, or the son of Patrick Raverty married to Mary O'Neil Kehoe, George and Patrick being brothers and farming side by side in the 1880 census. The land records should help figure out which Peter it is, given that the information on the note on the back gives a name of a family that was later linked to the Raverty property.

Jane

Hi Corie,

There were two Grimes families that ended up in Sleepy Eye, Brown County, MN in the late 1860s. One was mine and one was what I call the Other Grimes family. Both came from Tipperary, Ireland and lived near each other in Sleepy Eye. They probably were related but both were headed by a Michael Grimes Sr, both had a number of children which included sons named Edward, William, and Michael Jr., and these sons were all born between 1832-1840. After much research it has been determined that these were two different families and that these sons were six in number, not the same three.

My Michael Jr. moved to Lesueur County where he owned a newspaper for many years.

The other Michael Jr. married Nancy Raverty, as follows:

Michael Grimes b. 1836 Tipperary d. 20 Oct 1920 in Windom
Married c1865 in Sleepy Eye to
Nancy Raverty b. c1840 in Canada? d. ????
Children:
Michael Grimes III b. c1867 in Brown or Cottonwood d. ????
Nancy Grimes b. c1871 in Brown or Cottonwood d. ????
George Johnston Grimes b. 30 Jul 1875 in Windom
d. 22 Mar 1958 in Cottonwood
George was married to Rosa Elizabeth LNU

Your Michael Jr. owned two hotels, one in Windom and one at Heron Lake in Jackson County, MN.

Hope this helps

They are pretty much all grouped together also with huge monuments for their headstones. They have beautiful one. Some Raverty's are buried in the Publilc cemetary.

Hi cousin! Thanks for the speedy response!
We're descended from George and Hannah as well -- through daughter Rose Ann (1852-1936) and husband Myron Pickle (1858-1919); daughter Barbara Elizabeth (1884-1974) and husband Oren McCoy (1885-1919); daughter Mabel (1906-1996) and husband Cyril Callaghan (1909-1966); daughter Patricia (living) and husband Thomas Lawrenz (living); to me.

My grandmother, Mabel, and her brothers and sister were all born and raised in Sleepy Eye.

My mom visited the Jessenland cemetery and found William and Jane's graves. She's looking for the photos of them but gave me the notations from their gravestones as William (1782-1866) & Jane (1791-1877) Raverty. (That was the first time we'd come across William instead of George as his first name.)

I have Patrick's DOD as 15 Mar 1931 -- is that correct? Do you recall which paper carried the obit? I'd like to contact them or the historical society to get a copy.

Keep in touch,
~Kathi

Raverty/Rafferty County Down/County Armagh

I have relatives who probably emigrated in the early 1800s. There were 3 brothers, James, the eldest(married Clarrissa Mennessiers, a French woman from Cincinnati); Bernard, a physician (married Clarissa after James' death); John, a stone-cutter(married to Nancy from South Caroline). A sister, Sarah, married a John McCartin. Other siblings who stayed behind were Margaret, who married a Kerr. A sister, Roseann, married Thomas McLinan and lived in Scotland. There may have been a fourth brother who had a son named James(married Sarah Pacotet). I have not traced this connection. The family who emigrated lived in Louisville, KY according to 1830 census and owned property also in Cincinnati. Later after John's death in 1849, his wife, Nancy moved to southern Indiana with their children: Sarah, Charles, John and Clara. (The family was sometimes listed as Raverty and sometimes as Rafferty.)

I have recently learned that the James, Bernard and John on the 1796 "Flax Growers List" from County Armagh. I am trying to connect this information to my relatives.
If you have traced your familiy through the censuses to KY, I am sure we are related.

Please let me know.
