Rawlings, Rawlins

Actually, I descend from a Samuel Rawlins born in Ireland(we think) in 1839 but baptized with his brother Alfred and sister Mary in Middlesex in 1845. Parents were Samuel and Mary Rawlins. My Samuel left Ireland in 1867 for the US but must have returned at some point because he left again in 1872 from Liverpool with a watchmaker, James Marshea and James' sister Ellen. My gggrandfather died in 1884 in the States. His wife remarried and we lost family information.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi Cousin Philly,
Only just seen your Ancestry request from 2005. Tried to send you an email but that old address was not recognized.
If you send an email to me at:
rollorawlings@hotmail.co.uk
I will resend what I have for you so you can verify our tribal connections. I notice that you logged on to Ancestry about a month ago so I presume you are still engaged in this pursuit.
In peace and harmony
Graham Rawlings

Thank you for responding Barbara. SNC is one of the cemeteries I contacted, they have no record of John being buried there but, that doesn't mean that he is not there. John died Jan 26, 1863 in a hospital in Springfield, MO. I contacted the Springfield Library and asked if they might have any information on John. To my amazement they had indeed found some documents and sent me a copy of each one they found.
As far as Thomas, I found him in the 1910 Census living in Lost River, Klamath, Oregon with wife Barbara and 2 children, my grandfather, John, age 16, and Sonoma. Sonoma was only 11 months at the time but I do have the dates they were born. To my knowledge these are the only 2 children that John and Barbara had. I don't know anything about Thomas other than my mother telling me the names of her grandparents. She was named after both of her grandparents as was I.
My Grandfather John Robert was born Apr 4, 1894 in Ray Co., MO, so some time after 1894 they moved from MO to OR. On May 15, 1909 in OR Sonoma was. Her name was Sonoma Elaine Turnage, she married George Magonigal. Unsure of the marriage date.
Thomas, Barbara, John, and Sonoma are all buried in CA. Thomas, Barbara and John are buried at Sutter Cemetery, Sutter, CA. Sonoma is buried at Manzanita Cemetery, Lincoln, Placer Co., CA along with her husband George.
John Robert married Bertha May Havens, again not sure of marriage date.
I wish I knew more about when they moved to CA and how they lived, but I don't. My mother was 6 yrs old when Thomas and Barbara died.
I am adding a link to Find-A-Grave that you might like.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=17...

I am happy to tell you that I have found John's gravesite. He was buried in Springfield National Cemetery, Springfield Missouri gravesite number 163 with grave number 1 being in the southwest corner of the cemetery. "The grave numbers run north and alternately south until the close of the tiers." He died there of pneumonia during his Union Army service about 2 weeks before Thomas Allen was born. I have the names and dates of his family except I am missing the birthdates for his daughters Elva and Senoma. Do you have those? What else can you tell me about Thomas Allen? Do you know when he moved to California? How did he make his living?

I'm a descendant through Michial and Jemima's son John. John m. Catherine Foster, Jan 13, 1859 in Ray Co., Missouri. I have not been able to find where John is buried. I have contacted 2 cemeteries that have Civil War vets buried there. Neither cemetery has records of a John Turnage (Turnidge). John died sometime in late 1862 or in Jan 1863, before their youngest son Thomas Allen was born. Thomas Allen was my Great Grandfather. Thomas is listed in the 1880 Census with his mother and brothers, Occupation is listed as prisoner. Thomas died in California and is buried at Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, California.

Hi,
i am Carol Bowers. My grandmother, Ruth Rawlings Bowers, was Austin's sister. It's funny, I was just now reading their father's diary from 1889. Grandma had given it to me many years ago. Not terribly interesting - he was in Denver at the time. I know that's where he met Lucy B. Smith and they married there in 1892. My sister and I found their marriage certificate in the state archives a while back. He is listed as Luther Isaac Rawlings on that. Grandma could never remember which name came first. His father was Isaac L. Rawlings, born Jan 28, 1828, married Elizabeth (don't have last name), born May 2, 1830. They had 11 children, Luther was the ninth, born Aug 30, 1865. That's about all the information I have, except for all the siblings of Luther - I have names and birthdates for them if you are interested.

Hope this was some help,
Carol Bowers

I just put "after 1870" because that is the last census I found him on. I am descended from Michael's son John. John died in the Civil War. His widow raised her 3 young sons on her widow's pension and never remarried. She later moved with her eldest son, James William to Oklahoma, leaving the Turnages in Missouri. The family members who pioneered left family records behind, I have found, and are the hardest to track.
Thank you so much for your reply to my query, it has been very enlightening. I did know the sister died in a fire at home, but nothing about the circumstances. As you say though, it is just speculation that Michael had anything to do with it. I do see that Michael is living with William in the 1860 and 1870 census. Do you have a death date for Michael?

Michael Sr's insanity drove his wife and children away. His brother William was willing to put up with him and allowed him to live with him and his young 2nd wife and child. I have feared that Michael Sr. had something to do with his sister's death (in a fire) but have seen no court records.

Michael Jr's label of "Idiotic", meant "mentally retarded" He was cared for by his mother until she died. He was then looked after by and lived with his nephew after Jemimah died.

My grandmother Lula Turnage never mentioned her grandparents Michael and Jemimah so I cannot tell you more.
Wish I knew more.
Problem I am having in many US Census is misspelling even worse - Rawlings into Rollins or Rollings and even Rollings. Have you researched the decendents of Sir Walter's family? They have many in the USA

Jennifer,
Thanks for your info. I had found the marriage information for Elizabeth Rawlings, but wasn't quite sure of the name. I had tried WorldVitalRecords which should have brought up the FindAGrave but it didn't. I have found if you don't the have the name just right, it doesn't find it. You have him as James Baker "Bake" Pegram. Is his nickname Bake? I wasn't sure if it was suppose to be Blake, so you have cleared that up for me what his name really is.
As for Martha Alice Rawlings, she married John Milton McCully on 25th of Sep 1873 in Shelby Co., Missouri. They actually had three children. In the Shelby Co., History book there is a short history of John M McCully if you are interested. The history said they had three children, two living Aubrey and Glessner. Also death certificates for them which are found at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/

Martha Alice Rawlings
b: 11 Oct 1851 in Shelby Co, Missouri
D: 27 Apr 1925 in Clarence, Shelby, Missouri
B: 29 Apr 1925 in Clarence, Shelby, Missouri in the Maplewood Cemetery
married John Milton McCully M.D.

John Milton McCully M.D.
B: 8 May 1851 in Randolph Co., Missouri
D: 16 Jun 1932 in Shelbinia, Shelby, Missouri
B: 18 Jun 1932 in Clarence, Shelby, Missouri

1st Child: Charles McCully
B: Abt Dec 1874 in Sue City, Macon, Missouri
D: 22 Dec 1875 in Sue City, Macon, Missouri
I don't have documented where I found this info. I had one time when my program crashed and I lost a lot of info. I usually write notes. I'm thinking I found this info from a Cemetery Record.

2nd Child: Aubrey M McCully
B: 26 Nov 1876 in Missouri
D: 11 Oct 1943 in Shelbinia, Shelby, Missouri
B: 13 Oct 1943 in Clarence, Shelby, Missouri
I have a digital death certificate for Aubrey. I don't have a spouse for Aubrey - I will have to do some research on that.

3rd Child: Glessner (Glessie) M McCully
B: 10 Sep 1883 in Shelby Co., Missouri
D: Apr 1978 in Jackson Co., Missouri
B: in Clarence, Shelby, Missouri
married Everett Oscar Worthey 28th June 1910 in Macon Co., Missouri

Everett Oscar Worthey
B: 18 Apr 1889 in Jasper Co., Missouri
D: 13 May 1959
B: Clarence, Shelby, Missouri

I have a DAR application by Glessner that gives some of this info, also marriage record, Cemetery Records and Draft Reg for Everett Oscar Worthey.

I don't have any information on children for Aubrey or Glessner.

Let me know if you want any other info that I might have and thanks for sharing what you have.

Hi Jennifer,
I don't have information on William Henry Rawlings siblings or parents, but a little info on his children. I have a (1)Sarah Jeanette Rawlings that is on the 1850 & 1860 Census with William; (2) Julia A Rawlings born abt 1844 who is also on the 1850 & 1860 Census and I found a marriage record in Shelby Co, Missouri for a Julia A Rawlings to James M Hutchison on 13 Oct 1863; (3) William R Rawlings born 15 May 1845, died 3 Nov 1924 in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri and is buried in Clarence, Shelby, Missouri. He is married to a Sarah C, but I can't find a marriage, she just shows up on Census Records. You can find a digital copy of his death certificate online. (4) Mary A Rawlings born abt 1847, on the 1850 & 1860 Census; (5) Frances (Fannie)Rawlings born 1849 and died Mar 1874 and is married to a Bennett Allen Payne M.D. on 4 Oct 1870 in Shelby Co., Missouri; (6) Martha Alice, whom you already have; (7) Elizabeth Rawlings which I think you might have more info than I do. I did find the marriage to James Blake Pegram - did they move to Illinois? (8) Henry Rawlings born abt 1856 and I think is married to a Lelia who shows up with a Henry Rawlings on a Census Records and (9) Catherine Rawlings born abt 1858. They were all born in Missouri according to Census Records. I have more info on Marth who married John Milton McCully if you want it. It is thru that line that my line hooks up with. If you can offer me anymore info, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Louise

Re: Asahel Rawlings of Greene Co., Tennessee

I believe that Daniel, Sr. (son of Aaron) fathered Michael, Daniel Jr., Nathan, and others. Michael owned “Chattom”, a gift from his father in 1748, and dispensed of it in the early 1770’s, after he had moved away, first to Berkeley Co. VA, and then to Washington County, PA. Michael died about 1780, as did a Nathan Rawlings (see Washington County, PA estates). A Daniel Rawlings was the administrator of Nathan’s estate in the early 1780’s. I believe the Nathan and Michael I have just mentioned were brothers, as another Nathan (1750-1821) was involved in the massacre of Moravians in Ohio in 1782. An eyewitness to the event indicated that Nathan participated in tomahawking 19 Indians himself as vengeance for the killings by Indians of his father and uncle. Nathan (1750-1821)’s father was Michael of Washington County, PA. The logical path indicates to me that since both a Nathan and a Michael died in Washington County, PA within a short period of each other AND, since Nathan’s involvement in 1782 occurred AFTER these deaths, the two that were killed by Indians were possibly/likely Michael and Nathan (the elder).

Now, to answer the parentage issue for Asahel of Tennessee. First, Asahel and Michael Both had children with some of the same names (i.e., Asahel, Nathan, Daniel, etc.), which itself suggests a relationship. Second, on Michael’s estate sale papers are listed the names “Assey” and “Asahel”. This suggests to me two separate people (why spell them differently otherwise), with Assey being the younger and Asahel being the elder – perhaps the same Asahel Rawlings of Tennessee, thereby being a son to Daniel, Sr. of Baltimore County.
