All that I know about him is that he lived in Wildwood in 1900. My grandfather, his son, always said that he (son) was born in Williston, Levy County, but I have found no records of them there in 1898. There are a lot of Rawls in that area, though.

That is all that I know. I have even wondered if perhas his mother was widowed young or perhaps was not married. My grandfather said his father never really had much to do with the rest of his family, and frankly neither did my grandfather.

Thanks for any help, as this is the last missing link in my research.

Like what county/ies in Florida, his wife, his children, his death, etc. I don't recognize the name, but he may be the son of one of the Rawls I am researching.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Bobby. I don't have access to the actual documents. Here are the letters contents. Everything in this post was published in the (New Orleans, LA) Southwestern Christian Advocate, which covered the news of the African Methodist Episcopal & Colored Methodist Episcopal Chruches, primarily in LA, TX, MS, and AL (although some other states, too, with less regularity).

June 28, 1877:

My people lived near Franklin, St. Mary's Parish, Louisiana, and belonged mostly to Silas Rawls. Father was named Alfred and mother Rosetta. My sister Celia had three children named Henry, Ben and Rose, and sister Phillis had one child named Lucretia. Address Mrs. P.M. Carmichael, West Point, Fayette Co., Texas.

April 12, 1888:

MR. EDITOR - I desire to inquire for two sisters, their names were Celia and Phillis; Sillis Ralles was the man's name to whom they belonged before the war. We lived in Louisiana about eighteen miles from Franklin, I think in St. Mary's parish. Our father and mother's names were Alfred and Rose, and belonged to the same man, but was brought to Texas sometime in the early part of 1850, or '52. Those two sisters had four children, Celia had three and Phillis had one, when mother and father were brought away. Celia had a boy by the name of Ben, and one named Henry, and a girl Rossetta. Phillis' daughter was named Lucretia. There were eight brothers and sisters of us, besides Celia and Phillis; named as follows: Precilla, Matt, Margaret, Banton, Stuart, Henderson, and Violet. My name is Pumelo, I am the youngest of the children. The man's name who brought us to Texas was Mr. Wheat. He brought father, mother, and seven children to Texas, for Silas Ralles. They settled in Bastrop, Texas. Any information as to their whereabouts will be thankfully received. Address me at West Point, Fayette co., Texas, Pumelo Carmichael, or Mrs. P.M. Carmichael.

Pumelo Carmichael was my great-great-great grandmother.

I hope this is helpful-sorry for the delay.

~Denise

I'm a descendent of Benjamin Rawles who migrated to what was then Marion County, Mississippi (now Forrest County) from Barnwell District, South Carolina in the early 1800's. He came to Mississippi with several brothers who settled at various places. He was born in Wilmington District, NC and was married to Elizabeth Knight or Murfee. There have been previous posts about my ancestor, but I haven't seen anything that gets the line out of this country. Has anyone had any luck with that?

I think her father was William Rawls, he was an early settler in Norther Fl, Gadsden county and later Leon county. He was a Rev. War vet. and had serve in the war in place of his father, John Rawls. Most of his children were born in GA and moved to FL around 1820, her brothers were Seaborn and Labon, there may have been another brother and I think his name was John. I do not have my records handy at this time.

Can't seem to find any records in NC at all. The one in GA won't match because she wasn't born until 1921. Thanks for your help. Any suggestions as to where I might look? Thanks.

Bobby,
So nice of you to respond! I personally have very little information... Basically things that have been shared with me over the years by family members. My sister Angie, however, has numerous photos, and a few bits of correspondence that belonged to my grandparents. We would all love to know more (speaking for myself, my brother Paul, cousins Sharon, LaVerne, and Georgia, as well). I believe that you may have corresponded with my mother, Betty, many years ago about all of this.
Please feel free to email me at srawls65@aol.com.

Thanks!

this is what I found in my records:

7th of september 1816
SILAS RAWLS, SR. sells to his son DANIEL RAWLS 5 Negro slaves {to wit} STEPHEN, SILVE, ROSE, BENJAMIN and CADAR.
This in CLARK CO., ARKANSAS.

Then SILAS RAWLS, SR. dies about 1818-1821

Then this, which will help you alot:

9th of January 1823
ELIZABETH RAWLS marries BENJAMIN CLARK
They have an agreement between them and this from the same day.

ELIZABETH ROLLS {RAWLS} on the one part and DANIEL ROWLS and SYLAS ROWLS on the other part. Division of a family of Negroe slaves:
ELIZABETH got SYLVA, BENJAMIN and GREEN
DANIEL got STEPHEN, ROSE, and ALFORD
SILAS got TONEY, PHILLIS and PETER

So REV. DANIEL RAWLS {My 3rd great-grandfather} got ALFORD & ROSE.

In 1831 DANIEL RAWLS moved to ST. MARY PARISH, LOUISIANA where ho had a Plantation. In 1852 he sold the plantation and moved to KENDALL CO., TEXAS bringing 50 slaves with him from LOUISIANA.

RAWLS CREEK west of KENDALIA, TX. runs through his old property and is named for him. DANIEL died in 1862 leaving slaves in his will, I will see if I can find out more.

Bobby Rawls
{432}270-0076

Thank you for your reply. The information I got came directly from a letter written by my ggggrandmother who was looking for her brothers and sisters. In the letter she says that Silas Rawls owned her family in St. Marys Parish, LA. She also states that a man named Mr. Wheat brought Alfred and Rose (her parents) to TX. The area would have been Fayette County, TX. Their last name was Jackson. One census reports Alfred being born in VA. That's all the info. I have.

Her mother, Bessie Inez Rawls married my father, Charles E Nelson in 1932 in Las Vegas or Phoenix, AZ. From the pictures I have, I think it was Arizona. I was just wanting family information on the Rawls. I copied all you have on the internet. I was looking for Bessie Inez death date. And where she is buried.

Hi All,
Our cousin Cherree went all the way to Mississippi to get a copy of our John and Lucy's Marriage bond!!! I have been trying to get a copy for years!!!!!
The original transcription I received was missing the very bottom part information... and it turns out it was pretty important information. Isaac Powers performed the wedding ceremony on August 26th 1830. The same Isaac Powers that was married to Robert Throckmorton's widow Sarah Burney... hmmmmmm.. So the correct Wedding date is the 26th of August 1830. And we have a more solid lead on Lucy's parentage.... I have attached a copy of the certificate to the message board post... open for comment
I have also updated the Rawls web page. www.cydrawls.com
(for those of you with the Redwine link as well I also got the will for Jesse M. Redwine it is all on the updated REDWINE page!)
~ Cyd Rawls
