Thomas and Mary READING/REDDING, Stawell, Somerset, England, 18th C

My 6G Grandparents were Thomas READING (aka REDDING and REDING) and his wife, Mary, who had children in the 1750's in Stawell, Somerset, England. I've been unable to find their marriage, alas, and wondered if anyone has access to the Stawell marriage registers, pre-1750, or have information that would help my search.

Thomas and Mary's children were:

1. Roseana READING, bap 4 Feb 1750, Stawell
2. Edward READING, bap 15 Nov 1751, Stawell; married Sarah HULL, 11 May 1773, Moorlinch.
3. Thomas READING, bap 15 Jan 1759, Stawell.

The only other Thomas READING info that I've chanced upon so far is the following from the Somerset Archives, which may be useful to someone:

"Evidence given by Edward GORE, Servant to John MELLIAR of Catcott, Gentleman, and Robert SWAIN of Shapwick, Yeoman, concerning the theft of a hay knife belonging to John MELLIAR which was found upon search in a hayrick belonging to Thomas READING of Stawell, Moorlinch, Husbandman. JP: Philip BAKER. Also evidence given by Thomas READING that the hay knife in question has been brought to and from his hayrick several times but by whom he knows not. JP: Philip BAKER.
Date 22 Mar 1754"

Happy to share READING and associated info with other READING researchers.

Cheers,

Sue
Hello:
I was wondering about the information you have on the Reading family. My Reading line is from Wales. Does your history include this area? My ancestor was John Reading, b. 1775, d 1854 Crickhowell, Llangunider, Brecon. His son John Reading b. 1807 m. Margaret Thomas in 1837 and then immigrated to US. Does this sound familiar to you?
Leslyn Lang

Hi Lorna, I've been looking for you too. Was Googling and saw your post. How exciting to see you were looking for us! I am Jackie Tramblay Cahill's daughter Mikey (Michelle). You and I are cousins. My mother died in 1996, but my brother Patrick and I are alive and kicking in So Cal. Please email me at mcahill79@comline.com or whisker96@gmail.com. I have lots of photos my mom received when Grandma died, people I mostly don't know. Thought perhaps a Tramblay would like custody. Are you in Idaho? My nephew lives in Hayden. Take care, Mikey (Phone: 949-206-1165) Or Facebook, I'm the Michelle Cahill with Disneyland Castle.

Jenny Attwood Reading Nelson

I am looking for information regarding the death of Jennie Attwood Reading Nelson, daughter of Randolph F. Reading and Mary Isabel Orr. Most of her siblings died in Texas. I have her last in the 1930 census with her unmarried sister Maggie Reading and unmarried son John in Denver, CO.
In addition to son John, she had a daughter Isabelle Reading Nelson, who lived most of her life in Winn Parish, LA. Isabelle Nelson married Alfred Davis and had three children.

Jenny was married to Hercules Davis. The only time they appear in a census together is in the 1885 Colorado state census, Gilpin. He died before 1900. She is easy to spot in the census: she was born in MS in Sep 1857, her father was born in KY, and her mother in NY.

Any help would be very welcome.

Gretchen

I'm trying to sort out the rather sketchy info. in the 1800's.
The family was in Chesham or thereabouts in the early 1800's and seem to have been Plait dealers.I don't know what they did before that time. Edward Reading Jr. married an Eliza Rolfe(from Wycombe) and I cannot find the correct info. about her. Many people have connected her to the wrong family? (marriage in London)I think...
Any other info. or suggestions would be appreciated.

This maybe a connection (..or not) but whilst researching my family, Saunders, I came across in the 1871 census what was transcribed to be a Susannah Groves with Husband George and William Saunders listed as brother. Susannah and William I am certain are my ancestors. Further investigation into Groves took me nowhere.

Looking at other branches I came across Edward Saunders in the 1911 census and visiting were James Alfred Charles Graves with wife Louisa and son Leslie Walter James.

A ‘eureka’ moment. I checked the actual 1871 census page for Susannah Groves and found that the name Groves is in fact Graves, a mis-transcription. So now it looked as if Edward Saunders and James Graves are cousins.

I wanted to link James and Susannah but came up with William and Clara Graves.

The link: maybe George Graves is related to William and as the Saunders and Graves families were currently living in the Wanstead area of London (now known as Newham), James was visiting.

There is only one James Alfred Charles Graves born at the right location and the right timeframe to link to Edward Saunders. The link is tenuous but somehow Susannah Graves neé Saunders is related to James and hence William Graves, Professor of Music.

Regards
Ray Saunders
Looking for ANY information regarding John Reading (born c. 1645 – died 1692, Winchester, England) who was an English composer and organist, and father of John Reading (c. 1685 – 1764) who is remembered as an important music copyist.

Little of John Reading’s life is known. He became Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral in 1670, and in 1675 at Chichester Cathedral and at Winchester Cathedral. From 1681 until his death he was organist at Winchester College.

I am trying to link my READING roots, which I can trace back to Mechlenburg, Germany through a John Reading, c. 1840. I am hopeful to find a connection with this John Reading line.

Any info GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks.

I can't help at all on Eveline Evans. I've not been able to find any info.
On Clementina M Bates - according to Leach's book on the Reading's, her mother was Emily Williamson. Leach wasn't always right, but usually when he was wrong he was "close". I tracked Clementina's father/family from 1850 censuses through 1900. When Clementina first appears in 1870 Joseph's wife is "Esther Ann". In 1880 and 1900 she becomes Hester A.(which is probably correct). In the 1900 census she states that she had been married 31 years (making it about 1869). In the 1870 census, there is a four year gap between Clementina and her sister Elizabeth. It is possible that Joseph's first wife (and mother of Clementina) died, and he remarried about 1869.
Searching through the 1850 and 1860 censuses, I can find no viable candidate for "Emily Williamson" (possible first wife of Joseph). As Joseph is still in his father's household in 1860, they would have had to have been married shortly after the census for Clementina's older brother Joseph to have been born abt 1860/61.
It may be nothing, but in the 1860 census of Joseph's father's household (including Joseph) there is a domestic servant named Mary E. Williams (age 21).
Have you attempted to get Clementina's birth record from Burlington county yet? We've had fairly good results getting registration records back to the early 1850's. It would at least verify the first name of the mother.
If you don't have any of the censuses for the father, let me know. In my quick search for you, I haven't yet been able to find Clementina in 1880, but the family had moved to Philadelphia by then.

Bates) and your page turned up...sorta.

Do you have any info on Clementina M. Bates or George's mother, Eveline Evans?? I've got the names of their fathers, but have otherwise hit a wall.

Hi Liz,
Col. John Reading is the father of John Reading (1686).
Which child of John Reading (1686) also known as Gov.John Reading do you descend from?

I've essentially just begun my research, so this may be a dumb question, but which John Reading are you talking about? My 5th Great Grandfather is John Reading of Hunterdon Co., NJ.... but his father is also John Reading, and so is his father, etc, etc. John Reading (1686)and prior were born in England, but that still leaves a few to choose from.

Liz

Thank you Susan glad the info was helpful.

I have more on the PipeHill line as well as other documents I have sent for.

I will share all my findings when I can finish transcribing them.

We are always interested in adding data to the Reading Database.

Thanks so much for the info! I was just thinking about pursuing the Pipe Hill info when I found yours. Thanks for doing the work for me!

I'm a descendant of Gov. Reading's oldest son John and have been enjoying all of the info out there on the Readings. My grandmother was a very proud "Reading," and now I understand why.

I'm now working my way through the female line. Probably not of interest to you unless you're on the same line of descent. If you are interested I'd be happy to send you my chart when it's finished.

Thanks again,

Susan O'Connell
Granddaughter of Margery Hockney Reading of California

Don't know if your John Reading is the same as our John Reading. Our John Reading was supposedly born about 1815-1820 in Kentucky. He married Margaret Dryden. They had Mary Katherine Reading born about 1841 and William Thomas Reading born about 1843. I'm looking for both John's parents and Margaret's parents. John and Margaret are my husbands Great-grandparents.
