Cindi,

Just looked at this for the first time in years. Thompson Laban Records was a judge in Sherburn, MN from what I understand. Grandpa Rex (Albert Jay Records, Sr.) died in July, 1951. My father, Albert Jay Records, Jr. died November 2 0f 2007. His eldest son, my younger brother is Albert Jay Records, III. His only son is Albert Jay Records, IV, and as of August, 2007 Albert Jay Records, V was born into the family.

I am looking for information of the family reunion that takes place in Edinburgh(?), Indiana around the fourth of July every year(?), every other year (?) If you have information, Please let me know. I'll be checking this site weekly from now on.

Mary Records Schlosser
Hi James!

Welcome to the fascinating, fun-filled, and sometimes (as you've discovered) frustrating world of family tree climbing! You're right. Looking for Records in a Google search brings up lots of things that have nothing to do with the family name. It's not the easiest surname to have when you're just getting started in genealogy!

Fortunately, you've found RootsWeb, which has the message board that you posted on. You can also sign up for the Records mailing list here, too.

The best place to start your search is with the people that you know. Get the names, birthdates, birthplace, parents' names and other basic info on your parents and grandparents - as far back as you can.

Once you have a few names and places, try posting to see if anyone out here in cyberspace might be researching the same names. You can also go to the main search page at http://www.familysearch.org/ or here at http://www.rootsweb.com/ and try entering the info to see if anything familiar pops up.

To get a good overview of how to get started, check out http://www.cyndislist.com/beginner.htm . It's got links to lots of sites with advice for beginners.

You asked about the origin of the Records name. No one can be positive about each name, but according to at least one surname dictionary, the English name Records comes from Richward, a Norman first name that combines "ric" ‘power(ful)’ +"ward" ‘guard’ which would give you "powerful guard." The Old French "record" or "recort" meaning "recollection" or "testimony" may have been given to law clerks or someone who testifed in court.

Well, hope this helps you in your search. Good luck!

i was wondering if there was a free genealogy site where i can find something of even a remnant of my family history.
Would sure like to hear more about your Josiah Records. Any chance he was married in Maryland or Delaware and had a daugther named Elizabeth abt. 1770ish? I am trying to find the parents of my Elizabeth Richards who married John Watkins, 1791, Caroline Co., MD.

Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Sussex Co., DE. Their son, William, named his oldest son Josiah, a name which does not appear anywhere in the Watkins family, before or after his birth. I'm thinking, therefore, that his name might have come from his mother's side of the family.
