Herman & Clara (nee Reddin) Malzahn are my grandparents on my mother’s side. They went from Neenah, WI to Buxton, ND via covered wagon. Clara had three girls and died, I think in 1918 or 1919 from the flu Pandemic following WWI. Her body and the family returned to Wisconsin by rail, though at this point I know not where she is buried. My parents had lots of friends among the Reddin’s.

I’m just getting into this effort so I would sincerely enjoy communicating and exchanging any information.

John Geskermann
gskrmn@yahoo.com
Daniel could possibly be relative of Francis Reddan, married in 1833, Co. Offaly(King's Co.),many Reddan's, were involved in similar escapades. I am trying to find siblings of Francis, name changed to Reddin on immigration.Kieren is a family name, but probably true of many Irish families, I do know these Reddans were Roman Catholic.
Hi Kevin,

I agree with you on the Irish records they are a bit of a nightmare. There is Griffiths evaluation which is of limited use as it only gives the householders name and you need to know where someone was living.

As stated earlier I have a copy of the affidavitts issued by Reddin against various prison personnel and the inquiry into his treatment. I also have various newspaper articles relating to his arrest, trial and conviction. Some on his release and his appearance at amnesty meetings for the remaining fenian prisoners. I can send you these if you wish, they are all in pdf format. Further to this there are several excellent books on the Manchester Martyrs where some references are made to Reddin. I am sending you a web address of a Gerard Lodge who discovered the original records of the Manchester men, these are interesting as it gives the age, place of birth and physical description of all involved including Reddin, these may prove of some use in piecing together information on hopefully your ancestor. I am currently trying to gather information on 140 men sentenced to penal servitude belonging to the fenians, this is long and tedious work and with a young family not without interruptions. The web address is as follows:
http://www.manchester-family-history-research.co.uk/new_page....

I enclose my email address which is kieranmaxwell51@hotmail.com should you wish to correspond privately.

Good Luck and let me know if you want any of the articles.

Regards
Kieran

PS: I am an Irishman myself living in the North.

thanks for the reply kieran. my interest in daniel is i think he may be related but i'm not 100% sure. a cousin of mine and myself are doing the family tree and it was said in the family that there was a manchester martyr link. we think daniel was our grandfathers uncle. his name was patrick reddin. i have a copy of daniels death cert but that is all i have at the moment. my cousin is the one who has a better handle on it as she has being doing this for many years. i have seen the reports on the internet of the beatings he received.i live in dublin and she lives in the uk.we would love to find out more about him.we have our great grandfathers name so that might help but the records in ireland are hard to find especially before 1864
regards,
kevin

Hi Kevin,

My interest in Daniel Reddin (Reddan) is from a research point of view. I have been researching the penal servitude fenian prisoners for a number of years. Daniel Reddin, I know was involved in the rescue of Kelly and Deasy in Manchester 1867 and was convicted for his part.

I have a few articles on him including his case against the prison doctor Burns, who he claimed was the chief perpetrator of torture against him.

I suppose I am looking for information which is not in the public domain, about Reddin himself, where he was from, his family etc.

My intention eventually is to compile all the material on the prisoners and release as a book. I am not a professional author or researcher but just someone who is passionate about the fenian movement. I am prepared to share what information I have on Reddin if you so wish.I am not related to Reddin.

regards

Kieran

Hopefully also find some new cousins! So far we have results from members with ancestors in Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland, and soon will have results for my line which is based in Prince Edward Island Canada. Most of these are of Irish descent. If you have any interest in this project please contact me offlist at aggiroseATgmailDOTcom Cheers, Aggi-Rose

Hi there. Margaret was my great grandmother. According to the records I have she married my great grandfather (Frederick Reddin) in 1914. They had 3 children: Enid born 1915, fred born 1917 and violet born 1922. After my grandfather died she married a man named Jack Ogg and she is now buried in the Albany cemetary in Western Australia under the name Margaret Ogg.

Her son Fred was my grandfather. Fred had 3 children : my dad philip, glenys and ken(all still living and in Albany) I would have to ask dad how many children enid and violet had. I think violet had 2 daughters, colleen reid and and grace reid.

Enid died in a car crash many years ago, dont know what happened to violet. My grandfather Fred passed away in 1999.

My dad has in turn 3 children, myself(sharlene reddin) and my two younger brothers Micheal and brendan. my email address is dkinnear@iinet.net.au if you would like to contact me. I can certainly find out more through my father.

Margaret Haggett was my Grandmother's sister,
We know that she had a 3rd Class Contract Ticket No. 195 to sail on the SS
Papanui leaving London on the 19th August 1911 bound for Fremantle.
My research has since led me to discover that the SS Papanui was sunk off St
Helena, Sept 12th 1911, and that all passengers and crew survived and after a time, left St
Helena aboard the SS Opawa.

?
My family have always felt that Margaret Hagget made it to Australia, and married the
farmer that she was talking of marrying before she left. We also know that
she was intending to visit England some twenty years later, in about the late 1930's,
in the company of her daughter apparently to convalesce after a serious illness - a fall from a horse - whether it was G/ Aunt Margaret or her daughter we never found out. My mother remembers being told of the
intended visit when she was about five or six.

Sadly, the war broke out, at the same time, and for a while nothing was
heard of from the family in Australia.
Nothing unusual in that considering the time that she was expected to
travel, only my G/mother died in 1952,Gwendline May Scudder nee Haggett, never hearing about whether or not
her sister did actually leave Australia bound for England or not. Nor did
she recieve another word from her sister ever again!

Some of the family have assumed that the vessel Aunt Margaret was on, was
bombed, and that this may have been the reason why.
Over the intervening years, nothing certain has been done to find out one way or another.

The story about my aunt who had gone off to marry a farmer in Australia was
not mentioned again - until a few years ago, when my mother and myself were
talking about family history and the talk turned to G/ Aunt Margaret who had left for Australia!
Since that time, I have picked up the story of my G/aunt and managed with
the help of others to find out more about what could have happened to her,
with my mother giving me more information over time, and so I have given
you the story, as it has been told to me!

The fact that she might have remarried never occurred to any of us!

Please, what can anyone tell me about her or indeed
her husband/s and children?

Hi Im sorry I lost track of this thread some time ago and just now saw your post.

My great grandfather was also John Reddin the lighthouse keeper of Albany. His son was Fred Reddin who was my grandfather and in turn his son is Philip Reddin who is my father. My father recently went to the site of Micheal Reddin who was the pensioner guard who came out on the Scindian (think thats the name of the ship)

Dad took some photos of Micheals grave. He is the man we are directly related to. I would love to find out who his ancestors are.

My grandfathers sister was named Enid and she was killed outside of Williams in a car crash many many years ago. My grandfather died in 1999. When poppa was alive we went to the ceremony at the point king lighthouse where they dedicated a plaque to all the lighthouse keepers. John was the last keeper at the lighthouse.

Frederick William REDDIN

I am looking for any information from anyone regarding the person.

Frederick William Reddin was born in 1881 Western Australia, to parents John Gregory Reddin and Mary Ann Doggett who were married in Albany WA. in 1878.
However another search was made on the net and we found a site which shows a Margaret E. Haggett married a Frederick William Reddin in 1914 in the district of Plantagenet in Western Australia.
(Margaret E Haggett was my great-aunt).
Further, there are a number of marriages of Reddin up to 1942. also a number of Reddin children are listed as being born in the district of Plantagenet. Further there are a number of burials for Reddin including Frederick William Reddin in 1946 but no Margaret Reddin.
Could Margaret Reddin have gone to England and visited her family, in 1936/39, and not got there? As some of my family believe?

Hi,
I am trying to find out some information on Mary C. Reddin b 1848 in TN, the daughter of James M. Reddin and Delila Adam(s). Could she be the same Mary who married Philip Houston Stephens in Sep 1868 in Hardin, TN? They are in the 1870 census of Hardin, TN together and they had a daughter, Laura E. Stephens in 1871. Mary died shortly afterward and Philip remarried by 1877. The Stephenses were close neighbors to the Reddins in 1870 and Mary Reddin is the only Mary of the correct age in the neighborhood so I am attempting to prove/disprove my theory that she is the Mary that married Philip H. Stephens. Can anyone help me on this?

Does anyone have access to Lebanon Cemetery records? Is there a Mary Stephens buried there?

I am related but distantly. My line is John Reddin, Isaac Reddin, James M. Reddin and Thomas Mitchell Reddin, my great grandfather. He was born in Tennessee in 1866 and moved to Oklahoma in 1907-1908. I was born and raised in Oklahoma and currently reside in Texas.

I am not aware of any Cherokee but I have heard rumors to that effect. Btw, John Reddin was married to Sydney Sevier, who is most likely the sister to John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee. He was also an Indian fighter and a successful one at that. He would be one of our great great ...... uncles. There is a book called Battle of King Mountain that talks about John Sevier. I would recommend reading about John Sevier. Also, John Reddin and and John Sevier also took each other to court a lot from what I hear. So the rumor goes....

We are now trying to find the link between John Reddin and Europe. There are several people working on this, one of which is Roy Bingham. He has compiled a lengthy set of notes on the Reddins and is thinking of publishing a book I believe.

If the information I have is correct and I believe it is, then William Carroll Reddin was the son of Hays Wesley Reddin. Hays Wesley Reddin was the son of Isaac Reddin and Martha Jane "Jenny" McCracken. Isaac was the son of John Reddin and Sydney Sevier.

Hays Wesley Reddin married Louise C. Hopper abt 1840 in Hardin County, Tennessee. He was born c. 1818 and died before 1860 in Independence County, Arkansas. Known children are Anna J. Reddin, Mary P. Reddin, Hays Reddin, John R. Reddin and William Carroll Reddin.

Hays' known brothers and sisters are as follows by Isaac and Jenny: George Calvin Redidn, James M. Reddin, Rosalie Reddin, Sidney Elizabeth Reddin, John Wesley Reddin, Reddick Reddin, Mary Jane Reddin, Julia Reddin, William E. Reddin, Sabra Reddin.

Hays' known brothers and sisters are as follows by Isaac and Sarah Parrott: William Pierce Reddin, Cynthia Reddin, Pency Ann Reddin, Sarah E. Reddin.

Hope this helps.

This is a "clutching-at-straws" query, particularly given the time since your message. I'm answering in hope that you may have a Michael Reddin (born 1810, John's Gate, Limerick) somewhere in your family. He joined the army (61st regiment/Glorious Glosters) in 1825, at age 15. He then went with his regiment to Ceylon, where he served for 11 years or so. He returned to England, still with his regiment, and eventually went to Western Australia as an enrolled pensioner guard in 1850. He was married to Jane Edmonds/Edmunds (probably in Newcastle-on-Tyne) and arrived with children Jane (possibly from a previous marriage), Mary Ann, Benjamin and Michael jnr; John Gregory was born in 1853. Michael died in 1854, after being accidentally shot. If any of this "rings any bells", please let me know, as I'm really scratching to find anything on Michael with regard to his antecedents. Regards, Diane.

Hi, Shireen. Firstly, I think your Haggarth relative is actually Haggett. Secondly, I have already typed a short Reddin history down to John Gregory's children's generation - 5 pages long. We have thousands of other names, though we are missing some of the newer additions. I don't think Frederick remarried; he died on 7May 1946. Marjorie is the "missing" sister of Violet Grace that you thought existed. Joy Green, her daughter, also has lots of Reddin info, and she has some "bits" that we don't have. I'm not very au fait with the internet yet, otherwise I could probably send any info directly to your printer, if you have one. However, if you would like it done that way, I think my older son could help me with it. I don't know where you live but if you would like to ring me (08 9293 2018), I could find out exactly what details you want. As I said, we would love to share any info with you, and to hear from anyone with our "missing bits". We particuarly would like to find anyone with photos, if any, of any Reddins. We have some photos and certificates and other snippets. Diane.

Reddin, Michael, John, Frederick

Hi, I'm Shireen (Jill's Cousin), great grand daughter of Margaret Elsie Reddin nee Haggarth, grand daughter of Violet Grace Reddin. My ggmother Margaret married Frederick Reddin who's children were Violet Grace, Fred, Enid. I think there may be another child but don't have all details.
Margaret later remarried Jack Ogg and I would like to find out if Frederick remarried. I would love to see any history in relation to the family, particularly in reference to Albany, Western Australia, and surname links to Reddin marriages etc. I have limited information on Michael Reddin Born (1810) and John Reddin (Albany Ghost) so any information via email would be greatly appreciated.
My grand mother (Violet Grace) married Michael Reid who children were Grace, Dorothy, Colleen, Kerry, Kathleen, Michel and Linda. The cousins and second cousins are quite extensive from here. With all these names, I'm sure someone out there has some history.
Hi Jill, I'm descended from Benjamin, oldest son of Michael Reddin, our first Reddin in Aust. (See top message on this site: "Re Michael Reddin, born John's Gate"). I have a pretty full history of our Reddins (including interesting "human interest" snippets), barring the "newer" ones; so if you want a copy, let me know. You may be able to fill in some "gaps" for me. A cousin is going to Ireland next month and, hopefully, will come up with information on Michael Reddin's forebears. I have seen the research of other family members. Mine is ("she says modestly") far more accurate. My home address is 43 Temby Ave., Kalamunda 6076; phone 08 9293 2018.
