Your very interesting email has raised some questions, if you will permit me: Did you ever meet Pauline's son and do you know of his whereabouts today? I was wondering who raised him since both his parents died so young. Do you know what caused Pauline's death and have you any photos of her? Sorry for bombarding you; thought it best to get everything out there at once. Margaret McCormack was Thomas's second wife - Susan Burns his first.

Charlena Redgate Raymond

Kathy,

This is Karen, Jim Redgate's niece. My mother was Mary Redgate, half brother to your father. Never could find the brothers of the Andrew Redgate who is our direct line but have finally found it. They went to Canada and the some went from there to Massachusettes. If you are interested I would love to share my information. I would also like to get the information of your dad, mother, yourself and your siblings for my charting. I hope you still have this email address. Could I by chance get a copy of the information about 8 brothers? It sure would help me match up what I have. Our Redgates are scattered. There are also Redgates in New Jersey.

Hope to hear from you.

Karen

I believe I'm related to the Thomas Redgate who is a son of John Redgate and Rosanna Quinn. A John Redgate married Rose Quinn in Magilligan/Tamlaghtard Parish, County Derry in the 1840s (I would have to look up the exact date). They had a son William in Magilligan, then disappear (and I think they emigrated to America but can't find them yet.) John had a brother Thomas, who probably also emigrated to America. I have a lot of info about this Redgate family of Magilligan, Co. Derry. Please email me directly at magilliganlass@aol.com

Thanks.
Barbara Miller, Allentown, PA

I am again searching for my Regates. I found that Andrew Redgate moved to Phillipsburg and/or Camden and I know that George Redgate, his son (or possibly grandson) married an Anna Klemka. My great aunt, once years ago, went to visit him but that is all I know. I did find out from another person that Andrew Redgate's nickname was Monsio. I have not been able to trace his other children. There was Andrew Redgate, Jr., Ellen Redgate and Margaret Redgate. I have been unable to find them in any of the census records. I am hoping that one of the Redgate-Klemka decendents will find this post and possibly respond with some info.

Thanks

KRC

Hello Ted,

Great to hear from you!

The first George we had in our family came into New York in 1833 and he was from the same Redgate family that came from my Redgates in Aughil and Farmanaugh (sp). And then Andrew came over in 1860 I believe. But from what I understand there were 7 Redgate brothers who all scattered throughout the east, and I am not sure of their names. As you have, I also have William, John, Andrew, George, Ellen, Margaret, and other names throughout our family. I do believe there might be a connection. Also my Redgates were originally from England and went to Ireland in the late 1600's. I also know that there was a Jane Redgate that married a McNally. I just wonder if maybe your ancestors are related to my ancestor Andrew.

Thanks for your answer and maybe we will come up with something yet. Also where in Philly did your Regates live. And did they move on? There is also a family of Redgates in Maryland. And they go way back.

Karen

Karen,
The earliest George I have on record was born 1872 in Brooklyn. He was a younger brother of my grandfather John Redgate.

I've had a find in Penn. this last month or two. Finally got a Record of Death on my second great granfather William Redgate. Indicated his parent's were John and Phoebe Redgate from England. Also found their arrival in this country.

John and Phoebe are recorded in the Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Philadelphia 1800 - 1819. They arrived in Philadelphia with "2 children" aboard the Liverpool Packet ship from Liverpool. Arrival date is 10 Nov 1817. In a list of more than 40 passengers, they were the only Redgates. I don't have the name of the second child or the location of the parents. William eventually settled in Brooklyn and married Harriet Tower b. in Patchogue, NY.

Can this in any way help in a match with your information? It does appear that John and Phoebe were among (or the) very first people with the name Redgate to arrive here.

Let me know. And thanks.

Does the name Andrew run throughout your Redgate Family?

Where do you live and where did you family come from. My gggrandfather was Andrew Redgate and he also had a son by that name.

Just wondering if there is a link there.

I am actually responding to Candace and Ted. I have emailed Ted before.

I am finding that my Andrew Redgate who married Margaret Boylan sometime after 1880 went on with the younger children of Margaret and Andrew Redgate to Patterson New Jersey. From there I am at a dead end.

The other two children of Andrew Redgate, William Redgate who married Margaret Kennedy, and John Redgate (my ggrandfather) who married Catherine Boyle, stayed in the Lansford, Summit Hill area.

And then in 1833 we had an ancestor George Redgate come over from Derry, Ireland. to Kings in New York.

I am at a loss of trying to find them from there.

Karen

Hello Andrew!

What are some of the names in your Redgate family? My first Redgate Ancestor came over in 1850 from Ireland (originally from England in the 1700's) Andrew was my great great great grandfather. He was in PA in Carbon County but then he disappeared. I think I found him in New Jersey but not real sure. I do know that a lot of Redgates are in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. I am wondering if this Andrew went upstate. I do know that a George Redgate from the same family of Redgates came over in 1833.

I remember as a child my mother, who was also a Redgate told me that if you hear the name then you are probably in some way related.

Would sure like to know if there is any link here.

Karen

Ted,

It is my understanding that we have a George Redgate that came from Ireland to New York at about 1830. I believe he ended up living in Kings Grant, is that name correct? I think he was the older brother of my gg grandfather, Andrew Redgate. I wonder maybe if that is also maybe someone in your Redgate Family. There were so few that originally came over here and I believe that many are related. The Rest of My Redgates are in PA. My mother, Mary Redgate came to D.C. for college and married my father, James T. Ryan, Jr.

Kathy's father, Jim Redgate went back to RI just before he died. He was my mother's half brother and there was Michael who died in the 70's and Billy (William) who I think is now in California with his son Paul Redgate. The name William Redgate has come down from the latter 1700's.

I am hoping one day we can find a link to the Redgates in PA, New York and Massachusettes (where my aunt, Ann Redgate lives now) I think my mother and my aunt were the last Redgates and the only one alive now is possibly Billy Redgate who was married to a Bobbie and then I think Paul, Michael and I only know him as Binker (but I think he was also a William are still alive and kicking. These are my cousins from William Redgate, my uncle.

Here's what I have....
Theresa CASHMAN was born 17 Feb 1896 according to the 1901 census and she was the daughter of William CASHMAN and Ellen CONNORS.

There were several Thomas Redgates...
I may have them confused (please correct me if I do), but I have Thomas Edward REDGATE b. 14 Oct 1869, son of John REDGATE and Ellen McCALLION m. Annie BURNS and had Charles and John as you mentioned.

This Thomas shouldn't be confused with the Thomas E. REDGATE b. abt 1852, son of John REDGATE and Rosannah QUINN, who m. 188 Susannah CONNORS. They had Howard and Thomas L.

From your census information, it looks like the first Thomas above is the one who married in 1915 Margaret McCORMACK b. 12 Jun 1869, daughter of John McCORMACK and Catherine TOBIN. My notes say this Thomas resided in Belmont, MA in 1926.

I'd like to correspond with anyone with connections to these Redgates.

Steve Franey

Hi,

I have now traced my Redgates to Londonderry but from what I understand our Redgates supposedly came from England. The ones I know of are George who immigrated from Londonderry to N.Y. Kings County in 1834. Andrew Redgate from Derry to Philly in 1860, John Redgate same time, William Redgate, and there were also a few others. Our John Redgate was married to a Catherine Boyle. Andrew Redgate was married to Ellen Coyle, 1st wife, died 1863. 2nd wife was Margaret Boylan.

My ggrandmother was May Malloy who married John J. Redgate. I would need to look up dates.

Let me know if where you ancestors came from in England and did they have relations in Derry County?

Also do any of these names sound familiar at all to you?

All I have is that Theresa Cashman went to Charleston Ma. to visit her aunt, Mrs. Thomas Redgate in 1916. A lady wrote me and said that the 1920 census has Mrs. Redgate as Margaret, 50 yrs. old, born in N.S. Her husband Tom also born in N.S. and their two sons, Charles 11 and John 9, both born in N.S. and they all arrived in U.S. in 1916. I am trying to find out how she would be an aunt to Theresa who was a sister to my Gram. Her parents were Cashman/Connor or O'Connor.

My grandfather married a Frances Gallagher. I do know that My grandfather moved to Philadelphia. I do think that when he married his second wife (Alice Ryan) they lived in New York.

I will look to see if I can find anything out. But there is no other Redgates alive.
Thanks for the response. My grandfather, William J. Redgate's mother was Mary Malloy. My great grandfather John Redgate's father was also a John Redgate from Ireland.

As I had said there were 3 other brothers I do not know the name of that came over at the same time. Other than New York where else are your Redgate's from?

The original Redgates came over from Londonderry.

I keep hitting walls and I think a lot of it is due to the fact the Redgate Brothers lost touch with one another.

What are some of the other names in your family?

I do see that your Regate's came over in early 1800's. I know ours came over about 1840-1850.

Hope to hear more.

Did your Redgate family ever talk about lost brothers or family members losing contact?

Karen

Hello Karen,

Got your messages and I am wading through the information trying to determine a possible link. John E Redgate's first wife was Jeanette Watson with whom he had three sons: Edward, Arthur and John. John (the son) died in 1923 at the age of 23 from a fall off a roof.

John E Redgate had an uncle named William Redgate b. 1842. William had a brother (John E Redgate's father) John Lawrence Redgate b. 1839. I have nothing else on this William Redgate except he was born in Brooklyn, NY.

Father to John Lawrence and William (and two or three more) is a William Redgate b. 1805 in England. This man came to the US before 1830, married a Harriet (maiden name yet unkonwn) from New Jersey. They had their first child in New Jersey then moved to Brooklyn where they raised their family and lived the rest of their life. I suspect the son William moved away -- there is nothing more on him.

Thanks for you info.

Ted Redgate

There was also an Andrew Redgate and I think he married someone by the last name Bullion.

Maybe this can help both of us possible pull information

Karen

Karen, I've had to do a lot of digging for my father's family. Knew little when I started, years ago.

Listing his siblings: Elmer L, Gladys, Leslie (died at child birth), Robert Leslie, William Sylvester, Walter Stanley, George, Theodore (my father), and Florence Mable. All are dead now. The ONLY survivor is Walter Stanley's widow Penny in a nursing home in Florida.

John Edward Redgate was born in Brooklyn on Mar 17, 1869. These children are his second family by his second wife. He had at least three by his first wife.

Do any of these names mean something to you?

Information: My father was Theodore Redgate (no middle name). His father was John Edward Redgate b. 3/17/1869 (my grandfather) and my ggrandfather was John Lawrence Redgate b. 1838. John L, John E, Theodore and myself were all born in Brooklyn, NY. John Lawrence Redgate's father was William Redgate b. 1805 in England coming to the States before 1830 -- into New Jersey marrying Harriett ???.

You write that William J Redgate's father was John Redgate. Do you know at least the first name of this John Redgate's wife? Would Jeanette be out of the question?

Real interested. There may be a thread to tie it together.

Ted

Hi Kathy,

As we know your dad, Jim Redgate, was my mother's half sister. Our Grandfather, William Redgate, married Mary Malloy. Our Great-grandfather was John Redgate who was the brother of Andrew, William (our granfather)George and Andrew. There were also three others that I do not know the name of. I got this from Ann, my aunt in Mass.

Ted Redgate makes a reference to a William Redgate born in 1893 and died in Brentwood Maryland in 1966. It has to be the same William Redgate. Our grandfather, William Regate was born in 1893 and died in 1967. I always called him PopPop but I think he died in Philadelphia. I think you made reference to him as your great grandfather. He is our grandfather. John Redgate is our great-grandfather.

You are right. Our great-grandfather and his brothers lost track on one another but evidently scattered through the Northeast area.

As I said before if you find anything else please contact me and I will you also.

Karen

I was looking at the response from you to Kathy. Kathy is my cousin. Her father was my mother's half brother. Our Grandfather was born William J. Redgate in 1893 in Pennsylvania and died in 1967, I think also in Pennsylvania. His father was John Redgate. John Redgate came over with seven other brothers. Their names were William, George, Andrew and there were three others but I don't know the names. Evidently they lost contact with one another and were scattered through the northeast. I have gotten this information from my Aunt. .

I had contacted you before on the Redgate name but did not at that time have this information. Did you say your father was a John Redgate?

Our Redgate came over somewhere between 1843 and 1850.

Let me know the information that you have.

Karen

Hi Ted,
My grandmother is Mary Elysia Redgate Ryan and I became interested in this site.
I just wanted to tell you that I believe a distant cousin of mine did a genealogy/family tree on the Redgate family. I will confirm that with my mother and get back to you. You might find it interesting.

Hi,
My name is Mary Ellen Stephens. My mother is Ann Katherine Ryan Stephens and her mother is Mary Redgate Ryan. I think we are definitely related down the line. Karen Ryan Crawford is my aunt.
I was on this site looking up stuff for a friend and discovered the things about the Redgate family. You are correct. Ann Redgate Luxner lives in Stowe MA. I too was saddened to hear of Uncle Jim's passing (I don't remember meeting him, but talked to him over AOL once or twice).
It's always nice to discover relatives you've never met. :)
