I am interested to know how far you have progressed on your research and internet site. I also have Redgewell ancestors, Walter George Redgewell b. March 1866 in Tolleshunt Major, Essex, son of George Redgewell b. circa 1826 and Ann Maria Hankin.

Walter George married Anna Blandina Crabb in Maldon, Essex in 1884 and the family always lived in that area. My grandfather distinctly remembers his grandfather's (Walter's) truck with the name Redgewell on it, but cannot work out when the family name changed from Redgewell to Ridgewell, which fits in with your theory of land distribution in Ridgewell, Essex.

I have a great Aunt who lives in Essex now and she and her husband have done quite a bit of research into the family if you are interested.

Any comments or connections appreciated.

Debbie

I'm just starting to compile an Ancestry (Geneaology) family tree which I hope to start publishing on the Internet soon. On browsing this message board site I came across the Redgewell entry. My Grandfather was John Walter Redgewell who owned a Grocers Shop in Hedingham Road, Halstead, Essex, until the '50's, his wife's name was Lillian, nee Cook.

This is as far back as I've gone so far on my fathers side.

The name published (spelling et al) and the location sounds too much of a co-incidence for there not to be an Ancestry connection

I've got some interesting information about the possible origin of the name, it had an entry in the Doomsday Book. A landowner in the 1300's name of Redeswell (around the village of Ridgewell, Essex area) apparently handed out plots of land to his land workers who were allowed to inherit a form of the name.

If this is of interest and/or you can provide further info I'd be pleased to hear from you.
