Glad to see someone else is researching the Redwoods in the same area. However I have a gap between the 1640s and 1780s. I am just about to start putting my "tree" on Ancestry. You are probably far ahead of me but hopefully we may have useful information for each other!

I'm looking for any information on the REDWOOD family of Canterbury, Kent. In particular a Thomas REDWOOD who died May 17th, 1711 aged 66. I'm looking for the name of his wife, and children. 4 of his children are noted with his burial. William (d. 1686), Margaret (1695), Ann (1706), Elizabeth (1707)
Thanks for any help.

Ok, I've found this in the Lancaster Co.,VA marriages. Also, the encyclopedia of Virginia Bio by Tayler has Wm Holmes Redwood was the son of Holman Redwood and Martha Christian of Middlesex Co., VA. Is there anyone from this lineage?

Hello, Does anyone have any information on the Redwood family which would have been in Lancaster or Middlesex Co., VA around the early 1800s? I don't have much to go on except a chart which has James C. and Clementis Smith Chowning's daughter married a Redwood. No dates on the chart but I believe the family still lived in Lancaster Co., VA.

Hmmmm, definitely seem to have a bit of an 'overlap' somehow.... as your data seems quite similar to mine but different years.... maybe I've made a mistake somehow...eek! Think the problem is that, typically, a limited number of names are used repeatedly across the generations.

My Grandfather, Henry Albert (Harry) Redwood, born 1872 in Hanover Square. His father, also Henry, was born in 1848 in Bermondsey. His father, Frederick, was born in 1813 and married a Sophia Thorpe. There appear to be loads of George's, Henry's (Harry) and Fredericks scattered throughout the generations though.... must have been terribly confusing for the cousins!!!!! Just wonder if one of the children/grandchildren of Frederick (1813) also married a Thorpe... ie your Lucy.... would sort of make sense really.

It would be absolutely fantastic if we are related though. My Grandfather 'ran away' with my Nanna even though he was already married and had children. They lived in a wide variety of addresses across Kent and Surrey, but my Grandfather always denied the existance of his 'Redwood' relatives and subsequently we know absolutely nothing... partly because most of the photographic and documentary evidence was systematically destroyed by my Nana shortly before she died. However my Uncle and Father were able to glean some information from whispered conversations between their parents while they were growing up. Also two years ago I managed to contact my Grandfather's grandchildren from his first marriage and therefore obtained some information on the Redwoods from them.

Does any of the information I have shared match any of yours?

Looking forward to hearing from you
Jo

I don't know of my father George as having any sister, just the 2 brothers (1 was killed in the war).My Father George has 3 children 2 boys from a preivious marriage and me. The boys names are Walter (Skipper) and George. If my father was still alive he would be 87/88 years old.

I am more and more convinced that the George you cite is the brother of my great-grandfather who you call Harry. According to my records Lucy (or Sophia) Thorpe was married to a Frederick Redwood, and they had 3 sons, Freddy, George and Harry (my great-grandfather) and also a daughter Sophia.

Would be fantastic if we could get in touch.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Mary Ellen,
I would like to obtain whatever information is available on the Redwoods from Paul Smiths, NY. That is definitely where my mother's family is from and I'm sure that the obituary information would be very helpful. If the information is available online, is it on a web page that I can access, or would you be able to email it to me at: psickler@gte.net? Thanks for your help with this.

Pat Sickler

I'm trying to find out what happened to a friend of my grandfather's, who he lost touch with years ago.

My grandfather is Harry Jones, originally from Lancashire, and he served with Johnny Redwood in Manchester Regiment during the war years. They were great friends and all my life I have heard of the exploits my grandfather and Johnny got up to....!

All I really know is that he lost a thumb while serving in Malaya, and eventually emigrated to New Zealand. I don't even know if he is still alive, as he would be 70s/80s by now. It would be great if someone could tell me ANYTHING about him.

Many thanks

Hello Suzanne,
Sorry it has taken so long for me to answer your mail. I am not online every day. Since I know almost nothing about the Redwood side of my mom's family, your info is not familiar to me. I am wondering now if perhaps the Redwoods were half-siblings to my maternal grandmother, or if that was my grandmother's maiden name. It is difficult to piece together when I have so little info to go on. Feel free to contact me at any time if you wish. It is so frustrating to know so little about my family history.
Cherie
