Just to let you know, I am a relative of the reford's, my mother is daughter to allan and sarah from antrim, they passed away back in the 1950's & 60's, indeed you are part of a family that were well to do and lost their wealth in a gambling scam sometime in the early 20th century, in fact the reford cemetary is still intact today along the belfast road just outside Antrim near muckamore. My mother is still alive and the family name continues with the only son from that marriage and his son and their sons (they live in scotland). hope you have luck in your quest.

regards
Mike

I am waiting for that from Oz. His niece is still alive out there, although memories are a bit hazy now.
I have waited many years to do this, but being ill last year ( better now) made me realise that I should pursue it as there are blood relatives and I could have died never knowing who they were or vice versa! The Reford ancestors have been much more helpful than my small remaining family as it was so covered up. My grandmother was sent away and my G/grandmother confined to the house with a cushion stuffed up her dress until the "miracle" (she was late fifties) was born! Menopause was obviously not such a big issue in those days! My 2nd cousin, who for years I believed was my cousin was told of the name Reford as the father, since confirmed. Her father's sister was his sister-in law -very confusing! Drowning in it all now! talk again
Denise

The shipping companies were Canadian and yesterday I contacted a Reford "cold" to let them know who I was - no reply as yet. Risky, I know, but they either want to know me or they don't!
You are certainly a mine of information!
Denise

Interestingly I still have my maternal g/g fathers covenant - a bit waxy and transparent, but still intact!
I didn.t realise where exactly the Refords lived, down a road right opposite my family's home and business.
Have you ever read "My lady of the Chimney Corner"?
It gives good insight into things as they were and my g/g uncle is mentionned as "the best dressed man in Antrim"
Wow - fame at last!
Denise

Thank you for all this info.
As everyone, I am trying to piece things together, but this is shrouded in family secrecy as my mother was Allan Refords illegitimate daughter, and rather than marry into the "mini Carson dynasty" where g/grandfather ruled, he fled to Canada to his family out there. I am waiting for hard copy from Canada via Australia to try and find living relatives.
Thanks again
Denise

This could be the boy, because I think my mother may have known him and therefore there would have been a gap between her birth and him going, although I believe her family tried to offer him all sorts of things to marry, he wouldn.t.
Yes I think Frank could have been a brother. It seems the family, as many Irish ones did, repeated names a lot!
I believe that the origins of Reford are French and my Carson side would have been Scot. I also think that Allan married in Canada and had a son called Allan and a daughter but as yet this is not confirmed. There was a Lewes or Lewis as well - not Welsh, but probably from Louis the French. This would make sense as although they sound the same the similarities between french and welsh words is quite incredible.

Whoops - didn't read it properly before my fingers went into overdrive again. Will have to look into this a bit closer - the idea had to come from somewhere and I believe milling of cotton and/or rice came into the Canadian side and still does.
