Hello out there...
I have cousins I have never met and I would like to look them/YOU up this summer, June 15 -26. Does anyone out there know relatives of Daniel Lyon and Violet Reid, (ne: Rutherford)?
Grandfather Daniel was fire Chief in Hamilton, ON Canada when he died in 1966 of throat cancer. My Uncle Dan was a cop in Hamilton, I don't know what Uncle Howard or Aunt Audrey did or what became of them. My Uncle Harry was my dad's twin brother and was a mortian and played a mean Harmonica so says my dad Ernest Roy Reid. Dad played an accordian and moved to Alberta in the 1960's.
Any help would be heaven sent not to mention very appreciated.
thank you, Gary
Hello .. I am searching for a Donald Reid ..who would be in his 80s now. He would have been in the army (something to do with the medical unit) and was posted in Greenland and/or Labrador in the early 1950s. He was tall, fair and most likely had a space between his front teeth. I am his daughter of whom he had no knowledge! My birth mother broke off the relationship before she realized she was pregnant and did not tell him. Thanks.
Patti

I don't know how I missed this topic before. My little fingers are both crooked inwards, the left more than the right. I am not aware of my other family members having this. My mother was a Reid, descended from a John Reed & Hester McKeon whose son John Reed was baptised in Birr Church of Ireland in 1797. His army records in the 48th Regiment (served Australia and India) are all spelt Reed, but later as Reid in the English 1841-1871 census records etc. Descendants have always been Reid. I suspected a Scottish connection (earlier migration Scotland to Ireland?) but no proof yet.
Edward.

Searching for connections with Walter Reid born in Westham 1916. He lived in Shirley Southampton and was a Steward on a ship for many years, later he and his wife lived and worked in a mansion house in Surrey. They had a daughter.
Walter had a brother William (1914) and a sister Daisy (1920). Their father was William, reported to be Scottish, their mother Martha (1883-1923) they were split up shortly after her death and only Walter and William found each other again many years later nothing is known about Daisy. Would be grateful for any help.
Seeking information regarding the wife of Joshua Whitmer, Lucinda Reid, born Dec 23, 1835 in or around the Rushville area of Fairfield County, OH. Married Joshua Whitmer Aug 9 1855, and died July 9, 1909 in Fairfield County. Letters that have been passed through the family indicate that she was part Native American but there has been question as if she was half or quarter. 1880 Census indicates parents were born in Virginia but 1900 indicates Ohio but no indication from family records.

I am looking for decendents of William Reid/Reed,born Ireland about 1834,parents William and Mary, who married Sarah Reid, born Ireland about 1843,parents John and Elizabeth Reid on Dec 2,1861 on Amherst Island,Canada. One of the witnesses to their marriage was Edward McMaster. I have their marriage certificate but can't seem to find much other info on them.
I think they may have had children...Annie,Elizabeth and William. They show up in the 1870 Saugatuck,Michigan Census with Wm being a sailor.
It is possible Sarah remarried a Curran/Curren as the same children, along with a Sarah show up on the 1880 Chicago,Cook,Illinois Census. The Reids seemed to have known the Currans either from Amherst Island or back home in Ireland.

It seems that the crooked pinky finger has significant in identifying the Clan. It would also seem that therein lies the heritage. Let's all dig further in the early clans, Reid, Robrtson, Donech, perhaps this trait goes back further?

Sorry to jump in, but my gtgt grandmother was Melinda Reid Owen.(NC) She was from the line of Sir Thomas Reid of Iverness, Scotland. I have the crooked pinky finger as does my Mother (Reid line) & all her sisters & my cousins. We used to wonder if it was our Owen line, but learned years ago it
came from the Reids.

Bonnie

Thx for your info, however, my research back to 1370, shows that the 'crooked finger' goes back to as far as the records were keep...which would certainly make it a genealogical trait by now. It also shows up in the base clan as I stated in my last Email.

Yes, it is an interesting research project but I don't believe I can get very much further w/o some much needed help.

Gary

Thank you for posting this to the list -- very interesting!!! Hope you get good posts!

My own REID family goes back to a Helen b. ~ 1801-04, Angus, m. James INNES 1822, Dundee. Her parentage is not clear to me at the moment. I had thought Alexander and Mary (McDonald), but since she's buried w/a James, Jr. b. ~ the same time period that her father was more likely James. More to be revealed.

My INNES line seems to have had a 3rd "nipple" == Men with a nipple near the left nipple on the breast, but could appear on other parts of the body. Another trait. Found 1880s, Ontario; living family 2012 Saskatchewan.

Thanks for encouraging more personal/genetic traits to help us understand our common ancestors!

Have you tried posting this to a REID AND RUTHVEN Mailing List (better traffic) than a Message Board?

Marilyn

This is a fascinating subject.

My lovely wife has a very endearing trait of having shortened, broad tips on her thumbs. I researched it and it's called Clubbed Thumb, which is a form of Brachodactily, an inherited autosomal condition which causes certain fingerbones to be shorter than the rest. I think a crooked pinky might be caused by one shorter joint-bone tilting the finger outwards.

Her grandmother (A Ruthven-Reed) tells me that "The Thumb" had shown up before in her family. They are part of a lineage of farmers and tradespeople in Ontario, Canada that I have researched back to 1850.

I have not been able to trace her lineage back past 1850 to the old country, however so I can't say if there was any Robertson genes involved.

Willie Belle Reid back to parents, William Gregg Reid & Mary Isabella Gill back to grandparents, George Reid and Rachel Amanda Boyd back to great-grandparents, Thomas Reid Esq. and Mary Lusk back to great-great-grandparents, Robert Reid Sr. and 1st wife, Rebekah Gregg - immigrants from Northern Ireland and Scotch-Irish heritage.

Robert Sr. and Rebekah Reid first settled in Fairfield Co., SC probably at the end of the American Revolution as early as 1785. Moved to York Co., SC in the late 1790's. They had land on Turkey Creek. That property was sold/deeded to sons, Thomas, Robert Gregg, and James. The Robert Reids settled in the Fishing Creek area as did the descendants of Thomas Reid Esq and Mary Lusk. The Robert Reids are buried in Neely's Creek ARP along with many other Reid descendants. Many early Reids are also buried at Fishing Creek ARP.

Regards, Linda Reid who husband's descends from Robert and Rebekah through their son, James Reid Sr. This branch traveled to Bastrop Co., TX via TN and MS in the mid 1830's.

Re: Reid, Reed Family in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio1930s to 1960s

Hi,
I spent a couple more hours looking for any information on this family, but came up with nothing new. I don't know why they are so hard to find! Can you tell me if John and/or Janill were still living when you left for California around 1952? Does your mother have any idea when they died?
Here's a thought.... On Ancestry, search for Bertha Reid in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio on the 1930 census. You'll get a hit of Bertha Reid b. 1888. Click her name. You'll see the year 1888 in italics, and a little pencil next to it.
Click the pencil. You'll see that a user named richardvotaw submitted changes to Bertha's record. Do you know him? He might be somehow related to this family. If you click his name, and then click "contact", you could possibly send him a message via Ancestry and find out what he knows about this family.

One other possibility is that Ancestry will be publishing the 1940 census later this year. When that comes out, it might be possible to get some more clues. Write to me again in a couple of months (if not before) and remind me to check again.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck.
Margaret
