OK, I believe I now know the ancestry of Susanna Mumbauer.

Susanna is the daughter of Johan (John) Mumbauer and Gertruad Frick. Johan Mumbauer is the son of Johan Nickel Mumbauer. Gertraud Frick is the daughter of John Frick and Susannah Wenig.

Susannah Wenig is the daughter of Johan Heinrich (Henry) Wenig and Magdalena (maiden name unknown).

That's all for now ... I'll keep looking!

Barbara,

I am descended from Ludwig to George to George to George to Cora to Carrie, my Grandmother. I have had no luck on the George's birth records either, but I am going to have another look. I have some ideas from the census records, though. I wouldn't say that Rinkenbach made an error, though, as he identified Snyder County as Susanna's birthplace because it was identifed in her obituary that way (See Below). I would guess that the mistake was probably of the newspapers making, added to by the German accents of the family members having the obituary written. Susanna's obituary is:

Obituary, Bethlehem Globe-Times, 22 Jan 1915, page 9: Susanna, widow of the late George Reinbold, this 2:30 a.m., died suddenly of apoplexy in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Reuben Deibert, Moravian Heights. born in Snyder county, Feb 10, 1926, she was 88 years, 11 months and 12 days old. She leaves four daughters, Mrs. Paul Hahn, Iron Hill; Mrs. Joseph Davis, Colesville; Mrs. John Collins, Colesville, and Mrs. Reuben Deibert, Moravian Heights, and three sons, Edwin and Alfred, Hellertown, and George, Seidersville. The funeral, Jan. 26, 1915, at 1.30 p.m. will be held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Reuben Deibert, Moravian Heights. Services in the house and Friedensville church. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining. [Death Notice, same paper, date, and page: REINBOLD -- Suddenly in Moravian Heights, Susanna, wife fo the late George Reinbold, aged 88 years, 11 months and 12 days. The funeral, Jan 26, 1915, at 1.30 p.m. will be held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Reuben Deibert, Moravian heights. Services in the house and Friedensville church. Interment in the cemetery adjoining the church. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral without furhter notice. Allentown papers please copy.

Good point that Snyder Co. was the wilderness then. The fact that Rinkenbach made this error is in fact promising; perhaps he overlooked some other details, like where the records of the George Reinbold births are...
Thanks so much for posting anything you can find for our great great great grandparents.
Barbara
ps. Which of the George Reinbolt - Susan Mumbauer offspring is your ancestor? (Mine was Susan, who married a Welshman, Joseph Davis).

Re: Susanna (Mumbauer) Reinbold

Hello, Barbara.

Since I posted that message, I have not been able to fnd any other definitive info. I received just last week a copy of Susanna's Death Certificate. These usually mention the parent's names but, unfortunately, only her mother was listed. It also lists the place of birth, but on this record, it only says PA. At least we can confirm her Mother's name as Gertrude Mumbauer, for which the Rinkenbach book offered no citation. My main question about where Susanna was born is based on several things. First, Snyder county was not in existence when Susanna was born. Second, I could not find any birth record for her, or any record of a gertrude Mumbauer in what is now Snyder County. I did, however, find a Mumbauer living in that area around the early 1800's, but his lineage does not indicate a wife Gertrude or a daughter susanna. The third thing of interest is that family history does not indicate that any Reinbold would have travelled far, so I started looking for any town with "Snyder" in it within a very short distance of where George Reinbold lived. within just a few miles, there is a Snydersville, and not too far away, a Snyders. Looking in those areas, I could not find any historical record of Gertrude or Susanna Mumbauer. In the 1850 census, I did find a Gertraud Mumbaur, whose age would have put her into the realm of possibility as Susanna's Mother. She was living with a family who's name escapes me now. I have visited the gravesite in Friedensville, and am enclosing a picture in case you are interested.

Still a mystery, I'm afraid, but I'm more inclined to believe Susanna was from Snydersville in Lehigh County, as opposed to Snyder county. I'm heading up the Historical Society soon, and hope to have more info be found.
I will certainly post anything I find.

Take Care, Eric
I am also a descendant of George Reinbold and Susanna Mumbauer. At my father's funeral, I recall one of his cousin's kids (my 3rd cousin?) mention something about a family reunion. They live in Hellertown, PA I think.
I lived in Belgium and traveled often through Lorraine. The weather isn't great, but if you get it on a nice day in the summer, it's a lot like "Hansel and Gretel". If you ignore the cars, the countryside is probably not much different from when Ernst Ludwig Reinbold was shanghaied in the early 18th century.
-- Barbara Jacobs

She was my great, great grandmother. I have info. re. their children, but not re. her ancestors. The info I have states that she was born in 1826, so it's the same generation. It says that she was born in Snyder county on Feb. 10, 1826 and died on Jan 22, 1915. She was buried beside George Reinbold in the Friedens Church, in Friedensville, Pa. This info was written by W. H. Rinkenbach in 1960.
hope this helps,
Barbara Jacobs (Dehnick, Weaver, Davis, Reinbolt).

I don't believe the Emma on the 1910 census was Emma Reinbold because that was Emma E. and her husband Herbert Wartman were 25 and 26 and Henry B was 61 and listed as father in law. So Henry B and Mary J. must have had a daughter named Emma E..

Mary Jane Reinbold was born 24 Dec 1850. I don't know when she died, but since is not mentioned in the Obituary for her Brother George W.H. Reinbold, who died on either Jan 1, 1932 or 03 January 1932, I assume she died before then.

She was married to Henry B. Keeler, who is shown in the 1910 census as a widower living with Herbert and Emma Wartman. Emma Wartman was Emma Reinbold (Emma had two husbands ... Herbert Wartman and Charles Fickman). This means that Mary Jane Reinbold died before 1910.

Mary Jane was alive in the 1880 census. There was no 1890 census, and I can find no record of this family in the 1900 census. Best we can figure is she died before 1910.

Maybe old German, or I understand there is a difference between High and Low German. I don't know ... I took Spanish in school :) What website did you use to do your translations?

I've neveer heard the name Susan runyan... was her maiden or former name Reichenbach? Is she a Reinbold descendent?

This is helpful, I can plug these names into my genealogy program and see what happens. As for the translation of those papers. You can do that on the computer. I have not done it for awhile but I believe it was on Alta Vista. I will let you know if anything comes up. Do you know a Susan Runyan, use to be a Reichenbach there in PA.

Well, here's a bit to whet your whistle.

There is an annual Reinbold Family reunion. This year it will be held from noon to 5 pm on Sunday, September 9th at Furnace Dam Park, 10th and Furnace streets, in Emmaus, PA. I’ve never been, but am seriously considering going. I have heard from one person that they think they know where Ludwig’s original house is, and that there is a Crest on the chimney. Unfortunately, the present owner apparently won’t let anyone come near enough to take a picture.

I have a copy of Ernst Ludwig’s Last Will, and have a rough translation. Its in German, so I have to get another translation made to make sure of what it says.

As for Christina Hendricks, her name appears in everyone’s trees, with no indication of her lineage. Even the Rinkenbach book merely mentions her in passing. Her Death Notice in the 26 July 1843 Der Friedens Bote reports the death of Christina Reinbold of Upper Saucon, wife of Ludwig, on 10 Jul 1843. Age is given as 86y-9m-28d. As you can see, not much help there. The only way we know her maiden name is from an obituary of one of her kids, Wilhelm, which supposedly says Christiana Hendricks is the Mother. However, I believe I know her lineage.

Ernst Ludwig landed in Philadelphia in 1764…supposedly shanghaied, which was a common practice at the time by Sea Captains. They would kidnap people and sell them into indentured servitude in the new world. I have found a document that confirms the indenture part for Ernst.

But lets start at the beginning. Ludwig’s obituary in the Urban Republican on 05 Feb 1835: Reports that Ludwig Reinbold, Salisbury, died on 24 Jan 1835, Aged 90 years. This puts his birth sometime around 1744 or 1745. No Birth location is mentioned.

According to the Article "Palatines and Servants Imported on the King of Prussia." in The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, vol. 27:1 (1971), p. 57. A “Ludowick Rainbold” is listed on a Business record of the firm of James and Drinker, merchants of Philadelphia, giving a list of 75 German and English immigrants (52 Palatines and 23 English servants) imported to Philadelphia in 1764. In this article is the following entry for the date 04 October 1764:
"Cash of Abraham Lefever (Living in Norrington Township) to Ludowick Rainbolt. 2 1/2 yrs -- L14.18.8 -- Recd in part L10 & Note for balle payble in two months L4.18.8 [Paid] 12 mo. 15."

The translation of the above is that Abraham Lefever purchased the servitude of Ludwig for the price of L14.18.8. This includes payment for Ludwig's passage of L8 8s and "head money", or tax of four shillings. This entry shows the price paid for Ernst Ludwig, for 2 1/2 years, and the fact that L10 was received at the time. The margin notes that the balance was paid on 15 December 1764. This means that Ernst Ludwig Reinbold was indentured to Abraham Lefever until at least 04 Apr 1767

NOTE: I have seen records that an Abraham Lefevre, purchased 200 acres in Norriton Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pa. in 1761; he and his wife Elizabeth sold half this land in 1766.

The next mention of Ludwig is in the 1774 Phila County Tax List, which shows a “Lewis Rinebolt” in Worcester Twp. He is listed below Cornelius Hendricks, landholder of 80 acres. [PA Archives, Series 3, Vol 14, p. 467]. Of interest here is that Cornelius Hendricks appears in the 1769 tax lists as a laborer in Norriton Twp., so it is possible they knew each other for quite a few years. Note the last name … Hendricks. When I researched the history of Cornelius, I found he had a daughter Christiana. No proof of the connection, but the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. I believe that Christina Hendricks is the daughter of Cornelius Tyson Hendricks, whose ancestry in Pennsylvania goes back to the late 1600’s, and Mary Bean, who also has a long ancestry in Pennsylvania.

Ludwig and his family lived in several different townships in Montgomery County Pennsylvania for quite a few years. He first appears in the Lehigh valley in the 1790 census and as of 1798, he was still a laborer with no land of his own. I know this from the United States Direct House Tax, 1798 [Lehigh County Heritage Center Library, 352.1 NO T 1798] for Upper Saucon Twp, which states:	George Christ, owner, 20x24 log 1 story $150; Occupied by Ludwig Reinbold

By 1813, there is a record in Salisbury Twp of a Ludwig Reinbold owning 16 acres, but whether this is Ludwig Senior or Ludwig Junior, I don’t know. The 1810 census shows only one Ludwig living in Salisbury Twp, but the 1820 census shows both. When Jr. moved out, I don’t know. I need to get to Allentown to look at land transfer records.

Well, that’s all for now.
I also found them in a census record for Benjamin and Charlotte after the marriage.
Amanda,

Sometime in the 1970's, my aunt copied some pages from the Allentown Free Library in Allentown, Pa. All I know is there is a section titled "The Ludwig Reinbold Family" (whether this is the document or a piece of one, I don't know) giving information on the descendents of Ernst Ludwig Reinbold. Johannes and Benjamin were his first two sons. This document would have had pages listing information on each of them, including their children - however since they're "cousins" my aunt didn't send me those pages. All I can tell is that Johannes married Charlotte, and Benjamin married Maria Magdalena Dudt, who was born in 1772.

If the Allentown Free Library still exists (or at least its contents still reside somewhere), and you can find this document, you should be able to get the answer to your question from it. It does include information like someone being given guardianship of a brother's or cousin's child. I may try to track down the document myself....

(Their brother, George, had a daughter Mary M. by the way.)

Good luck!

Paula

Eric,

A little bit more - I just came across a few pages photocopied from the Allentown Free Library in Allentown, Pa. According to this, George and Susanna are buried beside each other in the "new cemetery at Friedens Church, Friedensville, Pa."

According to the same document, which appears to have been written around 1955, there had been no record found of George's birth, nor of his father's (also George) birth. Have you come across any?

Also mentioned is an annual Reinbold family reunion, first held Oct. 1, 1938 at the Jerusalem Church in the western part of Salisbury Twp, Lehigh County, Pa. Do you have any information about a Reinbold "family organization" and reunions? It's not something my family had ever mentioned. This is all apparently regarding the Ernst Ludwig Reinbold descendents.

There is also mention of a Rheinboldt family, "an old family in Baden-Baden in the Grand Duchy of Baden", and describes a crest. Do we come from them? (This says a crest has been found, but does not definitively tie it to our family.)

My apologies for straying a bit from Susanna - this information is all together from this same document.

Regards,
Paula

Eric,

I, too, am descended from George and Susanna. My aunt did some research into the family genealogy years ago (twenty or more), and her daughter sent me some information a year or so ago. What I have from their notes is that Susanna was born 10 Feb 1826, Snyder Co, PA, died 20 Jan 1915; lived in Colesville, PA; was buried in Friedensville, PA. In parenthesis after Mumbauer is the spelling "Mumbour" (which, to me, looks potentially French).

I assume you already have a list of their nine children? I have that, along with dates of birth and death for most of them, and some of the names of people they married.

You're fortunate to at least live in the same neck of the woods as where most of them originally landed and lived - I'd think that would help with your research. I'm beginning to wonder what it was like in Germany or Alsace, where they lived. Wouldn't it be great to find some relatives still there?!

If I find any additional information, I'll add it.

Take care,
Paula

Ernst Ludwig Reinbold WAS Indentured

Almost all family history and trees on Ernst Ludwig Reinbold indcate that he MAY have been an indentured servant. I came across a document that confirms it.

According to the Article "Palatines and Servants Imported on the King of Prussia." in The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, vol. 27:1 (1971), p. 57. A Ludowick Rainbold is listed on a Business record of the firm of James and Drinker, merchants of Philadelphia, giving a list of 75 German and English immigrants (52 Palatines and 23 English servants) imported to Philadelphia in 1764.

[NOTE: "L" is the closest symbol I could come to for an English Pound].

NOTE: I have found a record that an Abraham Lefevre, purchased 200 acres in Norriton Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pa. in 1761; he and his wife Elizabeth sold half this land in 1766. I am next headed to look over tax records for the period, to see when Ernst first appears as a free man.

Thanks. That confirms information I have as well. I personally believe that there was only one Ernst Ludwig Reinbold, and that he was married to Christina Hendricks, but wondered about the SAlly Lindes reference. I think that the author of the Sullivan County history book confused his facts.

On another note, I believe I know who Christina Hendricks parents and further ancestors were. There is still a crucial piece of evidence missing, but the circumstantial evidence I have is overwhelming. If I am correct, we now have our ancestors, from Christina, going back in the "new World" to the 1600's, well before Ernst Ludwig came over. If you are interested in this info, please respond to this thread.

Cheers, Eric

I have a Leonhard Reichenbach 23 Aug 1789 married a Maria Magdalena Reinbold 21 Sept 1792, on 1 Sept 1811. Her father Ernst Ludwig Reinbold and mother Christina Hendrick. Leonhard & Maria's children Christina, Daniel & Levina. Ernst Ludwig 1748-1835, Christina Hendrick 1755-1824 marriage 1773. Their children,Henry, George, Cornelius, Wilhelm, Maria M, Ludwig, Jacob, Catherina, Benjamin and Johannes.
The only Sally Lindes I could find was divorce in FL 1995. The Sally Reinbolds I found were born either way before or after Ernst Ludwig.
This Leonhard Reichenbach is the only one that I have found that comes close to a match with Ernst Reichenbach I have.

Susanna (Mumbauer) Reinbold

Looking for any info on Susanna Mumbauer, who married George Reinbold. The Rinkenbach book and her obituary says she was born in Snyder county, PA, in February 1826, but I have not found any corroborating evidence of this. Nor have I found any Mumbauer's ( or various spellings) in Snyder or Union County, Pennsylvania in either 1820 or 1830.

DOes anyone have any evidence as to her ancestry?

Mary is the daughter of George Reinbold and Susan Mumbauer, my GGGrandparents. I know very little of her but I believe she was born in 1849 or 1850.

According to on-line trees, Susan Mumbauer was born 10 Feb 1826 in "Snyder" Pennsylvania, although if this is Snyder County, Snydersville, or Sneidersville, I do not know, to Gertrude Mumbauer. I can't confirm this, and don't know what source information this is drawn from, but I do know from my Grandmother that Susan Mumbauer as born in 1826, which coincides with the online trees. I have not found any records mentioning Gertrude or Susan Mumbauer, except for an 1850 Census record in which Gertraud Mumbauer is listed as a Mother-In-Law in a the household of Andrew Wolder, Jr. and Maria Wolder.

George Reinbold is the son of George Reinbold, the son of Ernst Ludwig Reinbold. There is plenty of on line info for these two, so just do a web search.

Just Who Was Ernst Ludwig Reinbold's Wife?

I recently came across a transcribed book, A History of Sullivan County, published in 1899, that discussed in some detail Henry Reinbold who moved from the Lehigh Valley to Sullivan County, PA. In this book, the author clearly states that Ernst Ludwig Reinbold and HIS WIFE came from Germany, "tarried in Philadelphia" and moved to the Lehigh Valley. It also clearly states that Ernst's wife was Sally Lindes, not Christina Hendrick as most of the trees out there state. Either the book is wrong, or everyting most of us think about Ernst is in error. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
