Hi All,

I am coming late to this, but if anyone has any information on the Relf's - I would appreciate it. I'm Kevin Relf. My father was Jack Relf (born 1932, in Indianapolis?), son of Mary and George Relf, originally from Iowa (maybe was in Indiana too, as I was born in Indianapolis and I heard my father was too). My father's twin brother is Gene (married to Marcia) of Vinton Iowa. His other brother is Bill (married to Martha) of Phoenix AZ. Gladys and Vera are the sisters. If anyone from this branch of the family reads this, or knows the genealogy, let me know.

I currently live on Long Island NY but still have family in Indiana in addition to Relf family in Iowa and AZ.

I'm sorry but most of the Relf line has died out, no interacial marriages and a lack of issue in the marriages.
The Relf's did own hundreds of slaves over a sixty year span. Many took the Relf name. If there were liason's between the Relf's and african americans it would have to be done quickly as the Relfs were business people not planters and by the end of the Civil War most were dead.

Your best bet is that many freedmen had adopted the name. No harm in that. Unless you are alluding to some Relf's from northern Virginia or Maryland there is little likely hood of mixed marriages in this family. There just were no family members to marry anyone, mixed or not.

Hi Carmel sorry it's taken me so long to reply! It doesn't look as though your connection fits mine.
Our William Frederick was born 24.01.1855 at 2 Bowlinggreen Lane Dover Kent England his parents were Edward & Sarah Relf - I have his birth certificate. He was not married when he left for Australia.I have written down that info from Australia(can't remember where from) says that he was born 25.01.1856. My brother was searching the other day and found Bertha Olive Relf who married William Frederick Cramwell on 03.11.1909 at Plympton Methodist Church South Australia. The first names Bertha & Olive feature in our family but I can't find any more info. I think Plymton is near Adelaide where the Boat Garonne docked.
Thanks for getting back to me.
I am searching the Barfoot family from Ticehurst, Sussex, England and find that John Barfoot 1780-1859 married a Hannah Relf who died in 1859. Also a younger brother of John, named William also married a Relf. Her name was Ann Relf 1777. Could these be relatives? I think John and Hannah had 10 children. William and Ann had 2 daughters. There seems to be some gaps in our information. Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

Well I must apologise for selling a dud,the information that I was given is not correct and if I have caused any harm I am sorry for that.I spoke to the curator at the Australian Maritime Museum as he was the one who did the exploration on the Julia Ann he also had a list of passengers on that vessel and Martha's name was not present. But I still think that she left Australia about 1855 so we need to find inward bound passengers into San Francisco,if anything further comes to light I will post it up.

Regards Colin

Benjamin Green. His name is Lance Green and he is George & Hannah's 3xgrt g/son.

Lance is also related to Janice Morgan, another RELF etc researcher, whom you have probably heard of...I also know Janice and we usually help each other out with info etc

I am indirectly related to both Lance & Janice but through different lines.

Heather

I am interested in any information you might have about her emigration to the U.S., purportedly as the nursemaid to a British/Australian couple who left Australia. Martha later married my ancestor George W. Todd in California in about 1862.

Best regards,

Day Jones

Dear Colin,

This is the first I have heard about Martha Relf's ship being shipwrecked off Tahiti! 1855 would correspond to the time when she would have emigrated to California from Australia. Any further information you have about this fascinating historical anecdote would be gratefully received. Is this family lore or is there some documentation to support this story? Was her path from Australia back to the UK and then on to the US? Did she travel directly to the US from Australia? Was she, in fact, a nursemaid to a British/Australian family? What was her first port of call in the U.S.?

Best regards,

Day Jones

You are not alone with thinking you had a weird last name, after being a Relf for 35yrs & African American people are suprised when I walk into an interview with such a name. For many years my granny was the only Relf listed in the phone book, then I remember seeing a Rhoda Relf, A. Relf, & V. Relf & now there are at least 5 Relf's listed in Chicago or neighboring suburbs.

I don't have anymore information to add but I do have a uncle named Micheal Anthony Relf. It's strange when I come across Relf's in Chicago & someone ask if we're related. There is a young lady Vernita Relf that I went to highschool with never saw her, and my history teacher used to always tell me your cousin is in my class after you. I have been asked several time were we related. When I was pregnant with my son who is now 12 I think we both went to the same doctor office & the nurse said, "your cousin just left". Then when I worked at the TCF bank a gentlemen asked me about the same young women & asked if I had a cousin or relative that was a principal of some school on Vincennes, & I used to work at WAMU & same young lady had a good friend who asked if we were related. Well I have talked to a Relf who worked for Ameritech (ATT) & US Cellular (Andrea Relf) & when I'm at Bally's I'm no longer the only N. Relf so I have to show ID. This is funny but for some reason my 4 letter last name is the most difficult name for people to prenounce. Good luck in finding what your looking for Anthony.

I am a Chicago native born & raised. My grandmother was from Birhmingham, Alabama. Relf is her married name & she was married to a Johnnie Relf. I actually have a picture of him when he was younger. I know there are a few Relf's in Chicago that very well be my family but my grandmother didn't keep in touch with her husbands family after she moved to Chicago. She said he had either brothers or uncles here but I wouldn't know them unless I saw the las name. What I do know if someone actually took the time to do the reasearch the Relf's in Chicago, which it's not that many we're probably related. I have come in contact or worked with a few Relf's but never met them faced to face wouldn't mind meeting them. It's a strange & odd last name I'm usually the only Relf listed anywhere but I come in contact with my cousin A. Relf, N. Relf & V. Relf (lol). Only Relf in Chicago that I know is my blood relative is B. Relf but thats her married name. Cousins invite me to the family picnic! (lol)

I've had a quick look at the IGI, and although there is the marriage of a Thomas Nash and a Frances Buss at Etchingham, it didn't take place until 1760, only ten years before Thomas Relf married Margaret Nash. So, perhaps they were siblings, not father and daughter. The Marchant tree you mentioned might help.

I suspect the Relf website got it right about Thomas Relf Senior's origins, despite the age/date query. I don't suppose he was from far away. I wonder how long ago the website information was put together. I think some of those parishes must be missing from the IGI. One of these days, I'll have to see if there are any relevant wills.

Things do start to become a bit cloudy in the 18th century, don't they, especially for ancestors who didn't make it to the 1841 census. And when they start moving across one or two, or more, parish boundaries the difficulties really begin. Relf wasn't a rare enough name in that area, so I guess we'll going to have to wait and see what emerges.

Bye for now,

Ian

Some of this is guesswork, but I'm reasonably sure I have the right info. Margaret Nash's parents were Thomas Nash and Frances. After Thomas Relf died in 1788, Margaret remarried, to John Marchant (1735-1798) although I don't have any more info on John, I think there is a Marchant tree available.

On Thomas Relf's side, apart from his death date of 1788, I have no 'older' information. As I said, Frances married Joseph Relf, and I have his line back to his grandparents William Relf, d1799 and Elizabeth (1716-1763), but this info I got from the Relf site so you probably have that already. With most of my tree, I've found it very hard once you get as far back as the 1700s but I keep trying!!

Lesley
