I'm looking for information on Lucy D Renault, b. 3 Apr 1878 in Connecticut, d. Sep 1965 in Connecticut. Married to Fred U. Barre, b. abt 1864, d. 1940.

The earliest census data I can find on her, 1910, has her listing both her mother and father as French Canadian. I cannot figure out who they were.

any help appreciated...
John

Pierre Andre Renault dit Locat

He came to Canada in 1665. Where the problem was the family changed their name along the years. Some kept Renault, some Locat and de La Durantaye dit Lacarte and so forth. There was a book in Montreal Geneology about the name changes but now it is gone. To be able to find everyone's family we need to know all that were in there. If anyone can shed some light on this please do. Diane

Re: Appelina Renault or Reno, IN, IL or IA 1860s to about 1950

Appelina Reno was born in Seymour, IN in 1865. Her mother was Sarah Ford, daughter of a prominent state legislator. Appelina's father was Frank Reno, one of the leaders of the Reno Gang of Indiana which pulled some of the first train robberies in the U.S.

Frank was lynched by vigilantes in New Albany, IN in 1868. Sarah remained in the Seymour area, later marrying Frank's brother John in the 1880s. John was also in the gang, but he was in the Missouri prison when his brothers were hanged.

Sarah divorced John in 1887 after he went to the Indiana prison for counterfeiting--but they were remarried when he got out in 1890. He died five years later.

Appelina was an only child, so she and her mother were very close.

As an aside--when Frank Reno's mother died, Sarah and Appelina sued Frank's brother Clinton over the distribution. Settlement was held up for 22 years. In the meantime, Frank's father Wilkison cut both Sarah and Appelina from his will.

Another note--Sarah fought for decades to get Frank's military pension. Interesting because he deserted on more than one occasion. She finally succeeded in the early 1920s.

Mark Boardman

Edgar Reneault, Hudson, MA, 1924

From The Concord Enterprise, 28 May 1924 -

ATT'Y RICE EFFECTS CHANGE
IN BOY'S LIFE
Hudson May 28th—Edgar Reneault, age 17 years,
appeared in the Superior Court yesterday, charged
with breaking and entering. Atty John E. Rice
appeared for Reneault. Atty Rice explained to the
court that the home environment of this boy were
such that the boy was not wholly responsible for his
actions, he showed that the boy was not properly
treated and that he was poorly nourished.
He asked the court that he be allowed to take the
boy in charge for one month that he might show to
the court that right living and proper care and
encouragement would bring about results. The
court granted the request.
Atty Rice has placed this boy on a farm where he is
already doing light work and enjoying three good
meals every day, and also will dispose of under
orders, two quarts of milk daily. One and
sometimes two packages of cigarettes were
consumed by this boy daily. Atty Rice says that the
boy has stopped smoking entirely since he has been
placed on the farm.
He is interested in his work, attends church every
Sunday and there is already noticeable change in his
appearance.
Incidentally, Atty Rice said that it would be well if a
probation officer were appointed in Hudson who
would tak an interest in the wayward youngsters of
the town. He believed that such an officer with a
proper head and heart would be a great value.

Dennis Ahern [no relation]
Middlesex County Massachusetts Newspaper Abstracts
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mamidnws
Judy, thanx for the post.

The only thing I know about Leander Renault is that his name is on my gr-grandmother Rose Renault's marriage cert.
I can't make out her mother's name.
Rose was born 9 Nov 1866 NY (from funeral parlor record), died 5 FEB 1948 (I was altar boy at funeral mass).
She married 20 Feb 1887 Bkln., NY, Frederick Louis Friedmann aka Louis F. Friedmann.

To complicate things more - 1900 cens has Rose's parents born in England. 1910 Fath b. Ger, Moth b. Frn. 1920 parents born Canada 1930 parents born France.

An 1889 - 1890 Brooklyn city directory has Leander Renault, carpenter, 12 Olive Place.

That is all the info I have. I've resigned myself to the thought that with the short time I still probably have on this earth, one of my descendants will have to continue the quest.

Thanx, Jack Barry

Looking for info on Appa or Appelina who became my gr-grandfather's second wife sometime in the 1890s. She was a housekeeper for him (William Bruce Leffingwell,) and his six children in Clinton, IA in 1892 and they were married within a few years after that and moved to Chicago. She outlived WB who died in 1920. Only mention I can find of her is 1930 Indiana census which lists an Appa Leffingwell, 64, living in Seymour, Jackson Co, IN with her mother, Sarah V. Reno, 86.
Not sure if her mother shortened the Renault name at some point, or if Appa was born Reno. Suspect the former, as WB refers to his housekeeper in a diary as "Miss Renault." Trying to find out when and where Appa died, also name of her father and whether she has any living relatives.

Hi Madeleine, yeah this is cool. I got reaquanted with Fred about 2-3 years ago. Emailed him when I found him on Classmates.com. We even had lunch one time on one of our trips to S. FL to visit family. But have since lost contact again. Hadn't heard about your Dad. I'm sorry. Fred pretty much filled me in one your side of the family. I'm sorry that we have not contacted each other these last few years.

We are located in southeast Georgia.

I think I am related to the Renault extention you are inquiring about. My father was Fred Renault, my grandfather was Fred Renault, and he had a brother named Leon. However, they were born in the 1910"s I believe. Leon, we called him "uncle buck" lived in west palm beach. His parents lived in Jacksonville.

Perhaps another suggestion can also help. I suspect the St-Dominique Parish you have in St-Hyacinthe is the St-Dominique which is today in Bagot County and that if you search those parish records (they begin in 1837) you will find Edouard's birth and his parents, and then you can trace back. Mail me off list (sydney.robertson@worldnet.att.net) if you want some help in how to find those records.

Syd

I am searching for family members of Rebecca Renault. She was born in Tennessee, (possibly Lincoln County) On May 5, 1811. She may have lived in Alabama before moving to Tippah County, Mississippi. She married James Pendleton Lokey on Sept. 18, 1828 in Alabama or Tennessee. Children born from this union;
Nancy Ann Lokey b. July 5, 1829 in Alabama
Delcia C. Lokey b. Dec. 13, 1831 in Alabama
William Harrison Lokey b.
Michelle-
Have you looked for the marriage of Louis and Marie? If you have not, you should check Blue Drouin or Loiselle to find their marriage in Canada. That will give you the names of their parents and you can go back from there. We probably have common ancestors but I need at least one generation further back to be able to find out for sure. Good luck and let me know if you need further help. You can also email me directly if you prefer.

Came to Canada in 1665 with the company of Grandfontaine, Regiment de Carigan Some of his family kept the name Renault and others changed it to LaDurantaye dit Locat as the generations went the finally droped it to LaDurantaye and left it at that. There was a typed book in Montreal geneology section about the name change but since the family member went back the book is gone. Finding the relatives would be hard without it. Any info on families would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Diane

In his immigration papers, it states that he was from StHyacinthe, St. Dominique, PQ. He left with his parents Louis and Mary (Marie?) when he was about 5 for the US, I believe in 1856 or 1857. They went to Mechanicsville, CT and then To MASS, where he eventually became a merchant and married Marie PhilomeneDeneault (child of Octave and Cleophe)in 1881. The two had many children together in Worcester, Mass. One of whom, David Paquette, born abt.1899, is my Grandfather. For some reason I cannot seem to go any further back. Help!

She married Charles Schalow and they had two children: Carl and Emma. Would like to find more info about the Renault line of my family tree and her ancestors. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

Hi Lorraine - Thanks for the info but I don't think it's a match. Did they ever live in the Ohio area?
