Yes, there really was a Symon Renfry, Renfree, Refo.
Symon had two named children, baptized in 1652: Simon and Hester. Robert Renfree was also in Barbados m. Susan Holmes in 1662 and Mary Evans in 1667 with ten acres of land. Robert was listed in Barbados until 1679.Then on Hotton's list for VA about 1690.

See Barbados Records under Baptisms 1637- 1800. Compiled and edited by Joanne NcRee Sanders, genealogical publishing co., Baltimore, 1984 p. 3:
In St. Michael Parish, p. 25 of vol. RL1/1, records for year of 1652. Feb. 14 Hester ye dau of Simon Rensfree, and Jan 4, Symon ye son of Simon Renfrey. The early Symon transported to James Citty in VA colony by Jeremiah Dickenson on May 6, 1638. (See Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. 1, p. 86. He must have left VA, as no trace of him after arrival, went to Barbados.

Jane RENFREW Berlin 1915-2009 b.Kensington, Pa

KNOX, PA. – Jane Berlin, 94, born Nov. 25, 1915 in New Kensington, Pa. to Marcus Lindsay and Mabel (Armitage) Renfrew.

She graduated from Salem High School in 1933 and from Griffith School of Beauty Culture in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1935.

She married Samuel L. Berlin on Jan 11, 1937.

They moved from Pittsburgh to Salem Township in 1944.

She was past president and lifetime member of Dehart-Rossman Wenner American Legion Auxiliary No. 997 in Lamartine, Pa. and was a member of the Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church.

She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and also quilting, oil painting, ceramics, knitting & crocheting, traveling, playing cards, hunting, and fishing. She loved gardening, and had numerous beds of Iris and other flowers around.

She loved her extended family, especially caring about anyone who was having any kind of problems in their lives. She loved company, and always had a sweet smile, a cup of coffee and a piece of pie or cake for anyone who dropped by. If it was mealtime, there was always room at the table for more people and there was always plenty of food, as if she had prepared it expecting guests. She was always joking and laughing, and seemed to have a never ending supply of energy. She would wear out the younger people around her just trying to keep her in tasks to do. She wallpapered, painted houses inside and out, sawed firewood, mowed the lawn, helped haul in hay, and was always ready to help others with any task which needed done.

She is survived by son, Samuel L. Berlin Jr; a daughter-in-law, Nancy J. (Vasey) Berlin of Austintown, Ohio; grandson, Michael (Fabiane) Berlin of Brecksville; granddaughter, Rhonda (Michael) Pierce of South Euclid, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Grace Pierce, Sean Pierce and Bruno Berlin; and sister, Attossa Henry of Knox, Pa.

She was preceded in death by death by her parents; her husband, Samuel L. Berlin; sister, Grace Whitling; and brothers, Lindsay Renfrew, Lawrence Renfrew and David Renfrew.

In lieu of flowers, a donation could be made to Staff Appreciation Fund, Shepherd Of The Valley, 1500 McKinley Ave., Niles, OH. 44446 (330) 544-0771.

Youngstown Vindicator

The Renfro DNA Project

I'm pleased to announce that The Renfro DNA Project is now officially up and running. The project is being hosted by Family Tree DNA.

You can visit the project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Renfro/ to take a look around or to join up. The project just launched today, so we need some participants to submit their DNA for testing.

As a surname project, we are concerned with Y-DNA which is passed from father to son each generation. For that reason, any submitted DNA will have to be from a male Renfro (or any variant spelling of the last name). For female researchers, it will be necessary to have a male relative that fits the criteria to submit their DNA.

Please visit our project page where you can learn more about DNA testing and how it relates to genealogical research. Also, any help in spreading the word would be greatly appreciated!

Randall Baker
Administrator
The Renfro DNA Project

Alexander Renfrew, Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia, Canada

I am looking for information on Alexander Renfrew of Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia, Canada. The information that I have is that he was born in 1770 and died March 28, 1847. He is buried in Hackett's Cove, Nova Scotia. He married Elizabeth Umlah (1765-1845). Their daughter, Isabella Renfrew, married John Marvin and they lived in Glen Margaret as well. I can find no records in Nova Scotia for Alexander Renfrew prior to this time. I am interested in knowing where he came from and how he came to settle in Nova Scotia.

He had 2 sons,
Clarence and Albert Clark, both born in Amarillo, Texas in 1880's (guessing).

I am looking for any information on his origin in Scotland and any other family members.

Would sks please do a 1851 Census lookup for me.
Robert Adam was married 12 June 1863 in Johnstone. He is listed as a Private in the Renfrew Militia. His parents are given as Thomas Addam, coal pit labourer, and Elizabeth Gibson.
On his death in 1908 his parents are shown as David Adam, farmer, and Maggie Gibson.
I'm sure it is the same person and the marraige is to Mary Morning and the death certificate gives the same name as his (deceased) wife.
It would help if I could track down 9 year old Robert in the 1851 Census to confirm who his parents are.
Alan

They may assist any of you in finding Renfrew info: http://www.innernet.net/renfrew is their website address. Somehow my family is related, but because my family was "colored", no one talked about it. Does anyone have information re: a Renfrew from PA who may have had children or a child by Hannah,Mary or Sallie Brown circa 1800-1820? Feel free to email responses to: marshalljeannek@hotmail.com
