You seem to be a very thoughtful person.

When I lived in Merced, I trained with a sifu who was related to the Shotokan master Funakoshi. I think his first name was Robert, but I'm not sure. there was also someone teaching in a storefront on M or G. He may have been Hawaiian.

None of the above means much as it has been more than 15 years since we left Merced. What I have found wherever we have lived is that the good guys are always around. However, as I'm sure you've found, they don't advertise or have their own rental spaces. It's usually just a word-of-mouth hunt.

I believe that if you can ever find a Wing Chun or Modern Arnis instructor, you will be richly rewarded. Worth traveling for. I travel about one hour every week to my instructor who turns out to be very masterful in the two above ans well as small circle jujitsu. they are all very harmonious.

At any rate, best of luck. I hope that you do return to the world of martial arts. Once a martial artist, always a martial artist.

Please let me know what you do.

Best regards,

Maurice

You are very fortunate! It is great to know you found a teacher similar to Ramu.
I have not been training, but your note has reminded me that I should seriously consider picking it up again. I believe these random interactions sometimes are a reminder to add or change our routines & disciplines.

Thanks!
Russ

Thanks, Russ. It's good of you to get back to me. Very sad how good people disappear from our lives. How important to keep in touch.

I still remember Ramu's dignified demeanor as he entered the OR to take films intra-operatively. He did his work gracefully, efficiently and precisely even under the ever-present pressure of the setting.

Since roughly 2000, I have had a martial arts instructor very reminiscent of Ramu. Similar ethics, world view and, remarkably, also a radiology tech.

Are you still training?

Maurice

Howdy,
I believe I remember you. Didn't we have a "test" at your home and perhaps several lessons with Ramu? My name is Russ.

I did attend his funeral. His death was the result of automobile accident. (Very sad) I believe he may have fallen asleep while driving home from a friend's home. This occured in a mountain area between Merced and Nevada I believe.

I believe we are a combination of the people we know and the experiences we have had. I am fortunate to have known Ramu and his discipline, strength, and masculinity.

He was a good man and I hope to see him again.

Russ

I, too, was a student and friend of Ramu. I was trying to track him down to re-establish contact after many years and was very shocked and saddened to learn of his passing.

I was the chief of anesthesiology at the then named Merced Community Medical Center. He was an excellent person and helped me through some difficult physical problems. I continued to study with him until our departure from Merced.

As you attended his funeral, could you please let me know when he died and the cause?

My grandfather Domingo Renteria was born in the 1890's and we had a picture of him riding with Pancho Villa's men. Someone in the family stole it. Anyway he married Juana Suarez and they came to this country with four children in tow. They also changed thier last name to Vega in 1925. My father was born in Jalisco in 1921. The parents of my Grandfather, Domingo Renteria, are Vicente Renteria and Julia. My grandmother use to talk about her days with Pancho Villa and the commune they all lived in. If any of these name sound familiar to you let me know. Supposedly my grandfather also went by Jesus Renteria and he was an excellent electritian who spoke many languages and he was Pancho Villas first sergeant, or so the story goes.
Mcquerryvega@yahoo.com

Hello there,
My name is Russ and I spent a few years training with your father "Ramu." I made it all the way to purple belt. During my time with Ramu I did hear others refer to him as Marty but I didn't know where the name came from. I know he had quite a few friends around Merced, California. He was a radiology technician at Mercy. Many of the staff there knew him well. I first met him through a discussion I had with someone in a college class at Merced Junior College. We often had lessons at the parks etc...
He was a man of discipline and principle. I was at his funeral and was so sad that he was lost.
Please let me know if I can help more.
Russ

That's the one! He has since passed away I believe, but I knew he trained martial arts and worked as a radiologist. That is the extent of what I know. Right now I'm just trying to find any information about him, even if it's just some memories/stories you remember, things about his personality or idiosyncrasies, whatever. Did he ever tell you where the "Ramu" name came from?

Any information you could offer would be great. Feel free to email me directly at LostAloha@netscape.net

Thanks,

Emily

Hey my names Stephanie and i saw your post. Im only 14 so i may not know so much about this but i think i may help. You see my grandmother Vicenta Renteria, may be somehow related to you. Her father was Braulio Renteria, he never talked about his parents and my grandmother says that during the mexican revolution he fell sick and my grandmother thinks that he became an orphane. She believes that he had a sister named Matiana but she's not sure, but he had a neice named Victoria which my grandmother did manage to meet. Also my grandmothers dad was belived to be taken in and raised by a man named Diego Renteria who she says was either his uncle or a cousin but she doesn't know much scence he never talked about his family. I hope this helps you a bit as well as it helps me. Please respond back! :)

I was there in'06 and videoed a turist office guide explaining where the Renteria name originated. Mail me at: Greyfoxco@Yahoo.com if you wish.
