Just seen your post from 2000. William was the illegitimate son of Johnston Renton and Anne Maule. She was born 17thAug 1842 in Clackmannan Scotland and died aged 19. Johnston was then married twice and had several children from each. His first Marriage was to Margaret Combe in 1866. She died in 1883. He then married Jane Peacock Flockhart and had several children one of whom was my father Mark Flockhart Renton born in 1903 in Bathgate Westlothian Scotland.I live in Suffolk England but still have cousins in Bathgate.I am aware that some of Johnstons first family also emmigrated to America in 1914 on the SS Colombia.

Further to my emails re. James Renton, I must add: regarding James Renton (b. 1798) - James married (1) Charlotte Alexander 1823 (St. H., she died 1825; James married (2) Charlotte Magson 1823 (St. H.). James left the St. Helena Artillery in 1836. No more trace of him in the St. Helena Archives/parish registers.
Did he/they return to England, or go elsewhere?

I would be grateful for any help.

I am still looking for James Rentons. One born in 1798 (don't know where) who joined the St. Helena Artillery on the Island of St. Helena in 1814, whilst Napoleon was on the island. Also, another James Renton, could be his father (but not sure) who was a Sergeant in the St. Artillery, St. Helena, born 1756/7 (where?), married (1) Elizabeth Lake in 1781 (St. H.), married (2) Sarah Clough (widow) 1800 (St. H.). James Renton died 1822 (St. H.). James & Sarah had 1 child (Ann, b. 1802, married William Henley 1818). Ann & William Henley returned to England earley 1830s. Ann (Renton) Henley died South Hackney, London, England, 1850.

Dear Barbara - I realize this message is about a decade late - however, I was just perusing the Renton boards and came across this. My great grandfather (William Wade Renton) was a nephew of Andrew's, and in the 1900 census listed as 18, living with Andrey and Mary (Minnie) as a "servant"; in 1904 he married Ethel Daugherty - in the 1900 census listed as a "niece" to Mary's parents - however, the fact is she was an orphan (born in Michigan) with 10-12 siblings and was adopted by the Daugherty's - her birth name was Susan Bain (sp?) and we've never been able to trace her birth family. There are a LOT of Renton's in Belleville - I've been to the cemetary (Otisville) where many are buried - most being cousins to my great grandfather and grandfather.
If you have further information on this thread - or know of anyone that may - please forward to me - it would be greatly appreciated. I live just 10 miles from Belleville, but unfortunately don't know any Rentons in the area that would keep such family history.
THANKS! - Kathie

James Renton

I am trying to trace the birth or anything you may have on JAMES RENTON who was a Sergeant with the St. Helena Artillery at the time when Napoleon was in exile before his (N's) death.

JAMES RENTON was born circa 1756 (don't know where). Married (1) Elizabeth Lake 25 Sept 1781 (on St. H); They had 1 daughter (b. 1793, died 1825). Elizabeth died 1795. James died 1822 St. Helena.

James married (2) Sarah Clough (wid) 21 April 1800; 2 children (I believe): James (uncertain) b. 1798 (St. H?), married (1) 1823 Charlotte Alexander she died 1825; married (2) Charlotte Magson 1825. James Renton jnr was also a Sergeant St. Helena Artillery; all this took place on St. Helena.

2ND child of James Renton (Snr): Ann (definite), born 1802 St. H., died 1850 South Hackney, London, England. Married 1818 St. Helena to William Henley (Sergeant St. H. Artillery).

I would be very grateful for any information on this family.
Further information on my Renton line, don't know if this will be helpful.

Apparently for a long time the family worked on Glenmore station, Rowsley. My great grandfather Charles drowned in a well on the station, 1935, and is buried at Bacchus Marsh cemetry.

His father is John Renton who worked as a labourer. Mother Mary L Griffits domestic servant, working for Mr Bipets Station on the Campaspe. She came from County of Limerick. John worked at the Wild duck Creek, he came from Cornwall.

They had 4 children John Henry, Robert, Agnes, Charles. Charles was born at Mount Fyans Station on 23rd March 1867. He married Emily Davis/McNamara. They had 3 sons.

I am having trouble finding out anything about their lives or getting certificates for them.

I hope this helps.

Thanks
Do you have any information, please, on the Rentons of St. Helena Island in the Atlantic? i.e. James Renton who married Eliezabeth Renton on St. Helena (Elizabeth murdered a slave in 1785, then Elizabeth died 1795); James remarried and had a daughter (Ann) who married William Henley (solder of St. Helena Artillery, born Leigh, Lancashire). I would very much appreciate any information on the family, please.
Sincerely, Margmd

Thanks for your quick response.
My grandfather was William Charles m Hazel Hacke,
His father was Charles Renton born Mount Fyans Station 23/3/1867 m Emily Davis,
His father John Renton from Cornwall m Mary Leteshie Griffits from County Limerick. I think they married here in Australia. It appears from Census records it appears the family stayed around Rowsley, Bacchus Marsh area. Not sure where the Mount Fyans Station is.
John's parents are Richard Renton adn Susan Truscott. I don't know anything about them. I only got their names from John's marriage certificate.

I hope this helps. Thanks

Hi Beryl

My mum is Gwenda Renton. Her father was William Renton, he died when she was four. We do not even have a photo of him. His brothers were Henry and Percival. His parents were Charles and Emily Renton. Charles' parents were John and Mary Renton. I have the marriage certificate of Charles and Emily but have not been able to chase John and Mary.

I looked at the names in the renton marriages - John Renton to Mary Leteshie Griffits in 1857 are the people concerned. I can find William's death certificate but not his birth certificate. I have the inquests into both William and Charles' deaths.

My mother has a brother Kevin and a sister Olive.

If you can help me I would appreciate it. Mum is anxious to know more about her father and his line.

Can you assist in any way? Thank you for your web site.
I HAVE TRACED MY MATERNAL FAMILY TO SMOLLETT RENTON BORN IN 1795 IN RENTON, DUNBARTONSHIRE. THIS WAS THE FIRST INSTANCE THAT THE NAME SMOLLETT ENTERED MY FAMILY WITH ONE FEMALE OF EACH SUCCEEDING GENERATION SO NAMED TO MY MOTHER SMOLLETT FORTUNE DOCHERTY. THE NAME FORTUNE HAS BEEN CARRIED FOR 180 YEARS IN MY FAMILY WITH ALL CHILDREN MALE AND FEMALE HAVING THIS AS A MIDDLE NAME. THIS NAME ENTERED THE FAMILY WHEN THE FIRST SMOLLETT RENTON MARRIED DAVID FORTUNE IN 1826. I KNOW THAT CECILIA RENTON DAUGHTER OF JOHN RENTON MARRIED ALEXANDER TELFER SMOLLETT SON OF TOBIAS SMOLLETT IN 1760 BUT RESUMED HER NAME RENTON AT A LATER DATE. WHAT CONNECTION WOULD SMOLLETT RENTON BORN IN 1795 HAVE TO THE SMOLLETT OR RENTON FAMILIES?

I'm fairly sure we are looking for different people. The William i'm searching was in St. Louis, Missouri in 1880 with his wife Isabelle. They had a son by the name of William which is my greatgrand father in 1870. If you have any leads it would be greatley appreciated.
