Hi Phil, It's great to meet another Retford descendent. My great grandfather was Margaret's younger brother George Duncan, who emmigrated to Canada.
It looks like the Richardson/Retford trail may lead us somewhere. I have started digging around the Edinburgh records too. Great you found them on the 1911 Census! Could you share some details? And you found 3 marriages for Mary Ann. I only found Pearson and Retford. Who was the 3rd marriage to? I would like to send you some photos. Here is my email address morris1231@hotmail.com Cheers, C. Morris

Hi there, thanks for the reply. I'd pretty well given up on Retford a few yrs back but recently started to look again (just before your reply actually)
I'm still unsure of the Retford/Richardson name change. I thought it might have been another marriage for Mary Ann ,his wife (I've found 3 for her so far !!) but as you say, there was a son ,James Richardson Retford.
Talking to my gran a few years back, she stated that Jimmy Retford was renowned for his ferocious temper so I was wondering if he changed his name to hide from people ?
The 1891 and 1901 census' refer to the family as Richardson with James being born in Edinburgh. By the 1911 census, the name has reverted back to Retford but now he describes himself as being born in Edinburgh, rather than Darlington which is what his previous records stated. (I've only just received the 1911 details)
So, i'm thinking now he might have been an Edinburgh person. I looked a while back at some of the Edinburgh records but there was a lot of Richardsons and various Edinburgh registers so it'll take a while I think to track them down (if indeed they do exist)
Where do you link in with the family. My great gran was Margaret Retford (born 1887 in middlesbrough?)
Cheers Phil

Hi,
I am also researching this Family and have also hit this same brick wall. I asked an Aunt about a possible name change and she said she thought possibly Richards or Richardson. I noticed James Retford's youngest son is named James Richardson Retford. I looked up James Richardson born in Darlington in 1854, and there was a James Richardson born in 1854 Darlington, to a Margaret Richardson (Neasham area), no mention of a Father. Possible lead??? Still not sure.

I then looked at the Marriage Index and there are 3 different marriages of a Margaret Richardson, in that area, after his birth- but no mention of the Surname Retford. Still stuck!

Have you made any progress this this post?
C. Morris

My major brick wall is James Retford. According to the English 1891 census he was born in Darlington, Co.Durham approx 1854. This is confirmed by his marriage certificate which lists his father as Peter, ( deceased ). The wedding took place in Middlesbrough in 1886.
I have been unable to find any traces of either person anywhere else on any number of databases, census' (1871,1881,1901)
Anyone out there can help??
Cheers
Phil
