I have a photo of my gr gr grandmother, Kate Reynolds, which states it was made at the Indian Art Gallery. I would like to locate this place to help verify family lore and to figure out who her parents were. Supposedly she was born in McHenry Co., IL.in 1859 and married George Chapin in Chicago in 1882. Her daughter, Louis Jane Chapin, married my gr grandfather, Edward Joseph Bulow/Buelow in Chicago in 1904. She died in Chicago in 1910.

Does anyone have any info on the Indian Art Gallery?

Joseph M. Reynolds born in 1811

I am stuck! I have not found who an "unknown" mother is that gave Joseph M. birth.

I just got done reading posts about our past President William Henry Harrison and had to smile at some because researching the other family, I find that was a popular first, second and third (yes, some had and they werent for a religious purpose)! In my family's case the third name/initial was used after the president resided in the same county.

Most states had the same county names as well as first names.

Back to Joseph M. (born in 1811). Who was his mother? Did she die in chilbirth, and where did she come from? Did she marry Joseph M.s father and get a divorce or annulment?

In addition. through google, I found that the wife (widow) could mary a father-in-law with her son's approval after her spouse/her son's father is deceased. If the son would rather he marry her, okay.

The name is spelled "Runnells" in the 1860 census. Just search for Henry Runnells born about 1850 in Fairfield County and you will find them.

Don't be too hung up on exact ages in the census. I see these sorts of variations all of the time. I think the key for your Henry is that you see him and Laura with firstborn James, listed in between other Reynolds households in 1880. Then you can follow those names back to 1870, 1860 ("Runnells"), 1850 ("Runnels", and 1840 ("Runnels"), all in Fairfield County.

The 1850 census indicates that James was born in Fairfield County. I'm unable to trace him prior to 1840.
Maybe that's part of my problem, I can't find any of them in the 1860 census. I'm assuming there is a spelling mistake in their name but.....

Additionally, if he shows up at 10 in 1860, why then does he show up as 16 in the 1870 census. That could be the problem I'm running into. Thank you for your help.

Your Henry appears to be the son of James and Delilah (also seen as Delia and Lily) in Fairfield County. Henry who married Carrie is probably from Lexington County. Both Henrys appear in the 1900 and 1910 census records.

Henry first appears with James and Delilah in the 1860 census, shown as 10 years old. Unless you're lucky enough to find something like a family Bible, you may never get a more accurate date.

Death Certificates for Henry's brothers James and Joe give their mother's name as Laura Wooten.
My husband's great great grandfather is Henry Reynolds. He was married to Laura (I don't know her maiden name). Their son Bailey is my husband's great grandfather. I'm trying to find out the birth year for Henry. I have him being born abt. 1849 but other trees and census records I find have him being born in 1855. Also, I have a headstone photo of 1855 Henry with a wife named Carrie. I'm trying to figure out if these are two different men or if Henry remarried Carrie after Laura's passing, or divorce.

Joseph Reynolds b abt 1819 in Kentucky m Amanda Gatrell b abt 1822

I'm trying to identify the parents and birth date/location of Joseph Reynolds, born about 1819 in Kentucky.

Here is what I know. Joseph was married to Amanda Gatrell in Russell County, KY, by (pastor?) Wm. A. Cooper, on 21 April 1842. Amanda was born about 1822. Her parents were Dennis Gatrell (b abt 1875) and Agnes Payne (b abt 1789 to Philemon Payne and Rachel Wilson). Joseph and Amanda had nine children:
(1) James Tipton b abt 1842 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. He m Loduska Leathers in AR in 1872. Then m Mary Elizabeth Heaton in 1878 in AR.
(2) Sabra Ann b abt 1845 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. She m William Calvin Curnutt abt 1868 in Arkansas
(3) Sarah Ann b abt 1846 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. She m Samuel Jackson Cowan abt 1871 in Arkansas
(4) Martin Taylor b abt 1848 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. He m Rebecca Collins abt 1878 in Texas
(5) Artimecy Elizabeth b abt 1850 in Polk Co, MO. She m Samuel Jackson Cowan abt 1880 in Missouri. By that time Samuel was the widower of her sister, Sarah Ann.
(6) Lucinda A b abt 1853 in Polk Co, MO.
(7) Mary A b abt 1855 in Polk Co, MO.
(8) Joseph O b abt 1859 in Carroll Co, AR.
(9) Franklin Davenport b 1862 in Harrison, Carroll Co, AR. He m Margaret Elizabeth Collins (sister of Rebecca Collins, above) in 1882 in Denton Co, TX.

The family moved from Russell or Wayne County, KY, to Polk County, MO, about 1847-8. They moved about the same time as a few other close families from Wayne County, KY: McKinneys, Higginbothams, Dowells and Simpsons. Each of these families were related to Amanda through her mother, Agnes Payne. More specifically, males from each of these families married sisters of Agnes in the 1820s in Wayne Co, KY.

Joseph, Amanda, and several children are listed in the 1850 census in Polk Co. Some land patents list a Joseph Reynolds as a patentee in Polk Co. The family later moved to NW Arkansas and are listed in Carroll Co in the 1860 census. It appears that Joseph fought for the 15th Arkansas Northwest Confederate Regiment. Contrary to death info provided for Joseph on many ancestry.com trees, the Civil war records I've found don't indicate that he died, or even served in the battle of Vicksburg. Some civil war records indicate that a Joseph Reynolds from the 15th Arkansas NW Regiment lived until the end of the war.

Amanda remarried Henry Holt in Boone Co, AR, in 1870. She died in 1904 and is buried in Perryman Cemetery in Montague Co, TX, along with her sons James Tipton Reynolds and Martin Taylor Reynolds.

I'd be glad to be in touch with any other researcher looking at this family and any associated families. Of particular interest is any information on Joseph's origins, including birth location and/or parents. I'm glad to share the additional info that I have so please don't hesitate to reach me.

Thanks in advance!
Tommy Reynolds

Here are 2 possibilities from Ancestry.com's census data. (There are others) Do either of them make sense?
Re: Charles F. Reynolds - New York to California

Thank you scottreynolds33,

Samuel Ferris does seem to be the most likely candidate, but I hate to assume. Samuel is most always listed at Samuel F., so I was hoping at first that the F would stand for Felch - hence a stronger chance that he was the correct person. But it's Ferris, and I do not know where Felch came from (yet). Felch is kind of an unusual middle name and I'm working on the assumption that it's a family name of some sort.

Perhaps I'll find a Felch in either Samuel's or Rachel's family histories.

The lawyer connection, the NY to CA connection, the correct dates: those all fit in so nicely to my puzzle. But for all I know the little Charles F. on those census records is really a Charles Ferris!

I think I'll tuck it away as the most plausible (which is sometimes all we can do, right?)

Thanks for the reply :)
Melissa

I think I'd put my money on Samuel Ferris Reynolds as the father. Had you noticed that Samuel, Leonard, and Benjamin were all lawyers? Leonard seems to have been a partner in Samuel's practice. Samuel may have died in 1877. There is a hint in the 1900 census that Rachel may have been a second wife, with Leonard and Benjamin having a different mother.

Charles F. Reynolds - New York to California

I'm searching for the family of Charles Felch Reynolds, b. 1854 in New York, moved to California, d. May 1912 in San Francisco. He married Ida Frances Owen. He is often listed as Charles F. He was a stenographer early in his career then became a lawyer.

It's possible that his parents were either both born in New York, or there is a connection to Ireland. But I've hit a brick wall as there seem to be two similar (yet separate) families with a Charles F. born in NY around the same time (and moved to California).

There are two possible matches in the census records for his family: either father John, mother, Ann, and siblings Ellen, John, Maria. OR: father Samuel F., mother Rachel (or Rachel A.), siblings Leonard, Benjamin, Mary.

There's an off chance that these are the same family since names are often mixed up, but I can't figure it out.

None of the sources I have for Charles can give me definitive answer for his family. I'm looking for his parents, siblings, and previous generations. If any of this sounds familiar to you please let me know! Thanks.

Markham and Reynolds family from Boonville, Owsley County, Kentucky

I am searching for information regarding my Great Great Grand Parents: Edward W. Markham and Malinda Reynolds, from Owsley County, KY.

Edward W. Markham, was born on 30 May 1848 in Lee County, Virginia. As for his death I have found conflicting information. One story I have found is that he died in Montana but later buried on 6 Jan 1908 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. Yet I am confused because on the grave stone in Oklahoma the name is listed as “E.W. Markham”, so I am unsure if this is even correct or the right Edward (if that even was the deceased guys name, as there are only initials). The other story I have is that he died and was buried in Montana, but I cannot find any death or grave records to prove this. The third story is that he was buried in Owsley Co. but I cannot find anything to prove that.

And as for his wife:
Malinda Reynolds and she was born on 17 Aug 1860 in Boonville, Owsley, Kentucky And died on 31 Dec 1931 in Sunnymead, Riverside, California. I have found a lot on information on her family, as the Reynolds were one of the first families to settle the Boonville area. The main place though that I am running into a lot of confusion is with the Markhams.

I have found a few "Markham" genealogy sites that have an Edward W. Markham listed as the son of a James Sanders Markham who was born: 31 May 1814 in Bedford County, Virginia, USA and Died on 14 Jul 1882 in Owsley, Kentucky, United States. I am essentially trying to find information that connects my Edward W. Markham to this line of Markham’s. Edward was the son of James S. Markham who was the son of James E. Markham, who descended from John Nathan Markham (the Revolutionary War Solider).

I also found that no one has done any extensive research on Edward W. Markham. I have found other sites and research done by descendants of his brothers, but not him:
James Moses Markham (1843-1911)
Silas Parker Marcum (1846-1933)
Andrew Jackson Markham (1850-1911)
Henry Clay Markham (1853-1857)
William M. Markham (1856-1857)

Edward W. and Malinda had 12 children:
Charles Carl Markham (1883-1963)
Dora Ella Markham (1884-1960)
Zion Clayton Markham (1888-1969)
Edgar Leming Markham (1890-1980)
Anna Belle Markham (1892-1964)
James L Markham (1894-)
Bettie M Markham (1895-1979)
Vernon W Markham (1897-1965)
Mildred D "Milly" Markham (1898-1997)
Everett W. Markham (1898-1977)
*Leona Bertha Markham (1903-1977)
Theodore R Markham (1904-1995)

*With my Great-Grandmother being Leona Bertha Markham, She was born on 28 Mar 1903 in Owsley, Kentucky, and she died 20 Feb 1977 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California, United States of America

If anyone has any information about this family, please post or message me, as anything would be helpful!

-Annette M.

Re: Richard Reynolds TN/TX

Hello, Cousin: I am Alexander C. Reynolds great-grand-daughter, Enid Rose Marie Reynolds. My grandfather was Charles Mouton Reynolds, my father was Alvin Carl Reynolds. I too am looking for more information regarding Richard Reynolds, my great, great grandfather. I have a nephew who is also Richard (Christopher) Reynolds, thru my brother John Benjamin Reynolds. I seem to get to the point of born in Tenn for Richard; born 11 Mar 1798 and died 5 Jun 1881 (Found the tombstone marker picture in FINDAGRAVE. I know Richard lived with AC until his death in 1881. He may have had brothers, John, William, and David. Also, I have found an Ezekial Reynolds on the War Pensioners file, b. 3Mar1760 who could have been the father or most likely an uncle because he has a reference to marriage with Amanda and then 3 children--Michael, Emily and Lewis. Let me know what you think, if you want. Regards, Rose
