Roth/Rodes/Rhodes/Rhoads of PA/MD/OH/IN/KAN/OK

After 25 years I realize I've hit a wall. Can anyone help me connect or prove no connection between Frederick Roads in the 1810 Frederick Cty, MD census and the Frederick Rhoades in the 1830 Jefferson County, Ohio census. The one in 1830 is almost certainly the elusive father of my Michael Rhodes who married Sarah Burrier in Ohio based on other info I have, and since they live next door to the Burriers. Family oral history states the Rhodes and Burriers came together from Germany and the families stayed together. I just have never been able to go back father than Ohio. I have baptism records of a Michael Roth b 15 May 1808 son of Frederick & Elisabeth Roth, and his brother Johan Georg b. 27 Sept. 1810, and sister Elisabeth b. 30 Nov. 1812. In same church, confirmation record of Friedrich Roth on 30 Nov 1799 at age 18 which puts his birth date in 1781. Any information on the connection, if any, between the MD Roths and Ohio Rhoads would be appreciated.

Would it be possible for all listers to include the geographical locations of families they are researching?
It is extremely irritating when one spends time doing look-ups to try to help, only to find out that the family concerned lives in a different country to where you have been searching.

This book does not list a Philip or Absalom Rhodes (any spelling), so it's maybe not your line either. I'm trying to trace the ancestry of Jonathan Augustus Rhodes of Alabama, 1827-1912, who married (I think) Elizabeth (Susan) Giddens and whose father (I think) was John Henry (Reddin) Rhodes, b. c. 1798 in NC and moved to Butler Co. Alabama. There seems to be another Rhodes line from the same general area who moved to Georgia, and it keeps tripping me up.

Good luck!

I really dont think its the same line... Here is what I was talking about with the big coincidences.. I have John V Rhodes with a b/date of 1727 who was married to Eunice but his mothers name was Hannah. His children are listed as Hezekiah, John, Philip, Joseph, Sarah, Samuel, & Absalom... so you can see why I was curious. Which line are you researching?

Well, now I see that this is not known (at least not by the author). John's wife's parents were Samuel Graves and Phoebe Hull, of Tyringham and Lee, Mass. (apparently there were boundary changes in these towns). The book says John was not the immigrant to America - his immigrant ancestor is thought to have immigrated from Yorkshire, England, to Germany, and then to America. He married Hannah in Tyringham on 3 Feb. 1771 but his birth place is not known. There is information on Rhodes families in England, but nothing connects them directly with John Rhodes. Sorry, not very helpful. Maybe I can look at a later generation for you.

I am confused, too, about my own research into the Rhodes family. Very frustrating family!

C.

I would really be interested! I believe this is my line, but there are a couple of things I have that are different from what you have so I am now confused. So much of it is the same yet so much of it is different that it looks like it may be different people with a huge string of coincidences. Rather than go into everything off the bat, could you tell me who Johns parents were? Thanks!

1959 genealogy book - The Rhodes Family in America

I bought this book (sight unseen) but it doesn't seem to deal with the Rhodes line I am researching. It covers the descendants (and some ancestors) of John Rhodes b. 20 Mar. 1747, d. 24 June 1819 in Fowler Twp., Trumbull Co., Ohio. Married Hannah Graves, b. 14 Dec. 1752 in Guilford, Conn., d. 10 Sept. 1834/5 in Fowler, Ohio.

Their children: Jonathan, b. 5 June 1771; Hezekiah, b. 27 Feb. 1775; Sarah, b. 13 Mar. 1777; Joseph, b. 2 May 1779; Mary, b. 9 Aug. 1781; Phoebe, b. 23 June 1784; Charlotte, b. 30 Jan. 1790; and Ira, b. 23 Dec. 1791.

In the surname index there are many listings for Botts, and also quite a few for Waterhouse (Wattrous, Waters), and of course Rhodes and all its variants.

If this is your line, maybe I'll be able to look something up for you.

C.
I know this is long shot given that this post is 13 years old, but I am looking for descendants of Benjamin and Abigail's children. I am the ggg grandson of William Alexander Rhodes. And you are a descendant of his brother Hezekiah, correct? Do you have a brother or other male family member directly descended from Hezekiah who would test his Ydna at FamilyTreeDna.com (at my expense)? I am a graduate student and I am doing a possible thesis on the genealogy of my family using archived records, family lore and modern dna testing for haplogroups. Any help would be very valuable.
Thanks

Capt. William Henry Rhodes, Rockland, Mainen (1885)

I have no connection to this family, but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the Aug. 4, 1885 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier Gazette in the Men and Women column:

“Capt. William Henry Rhodes died at his residence on Warren street yesterday morning at four o’clock after an illness of several months, which baffled the skill of our physicians. Mr. Rhodes for some twenty years sailed from this port as master of different vessels, in the employ of Joseph Hewett. He was a successful mariner. For the last thirty-five years of his life he has been engaged in the grocery and provision business at the North-end. A staunch democrat from principle he has been closely identified in the political movement of our state, county and city. He was county treasurer for two terms of two years each and has served thirteen years in the different capacities as alderman and councilman.”

Rev. C.M. Rhodes, Rockland, Maine

I have no connection to this family but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the Mar. 24, 1885 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier-Gazette in the Folks and Things column:

“A gathering in memory of the late Rev. C.M. Rhodes was held in the school-house at Clam Cove, Thursday evening. The room was crowded with those who by their presence and interest paid their last tribute to the unblemished life of the worthy man, who so recently died. A very able memorial sermon was delivered by Rev. G.S. Hill of the Freewill Baptist church, and eloquent tributes were offered by Brethren Gould and Cobb, who were intimate with the deceased and knew his worth. Other testimonies to the noble Christian life were departed were given, and a deep feeling of sorrow at the loss of so worthy a leader pervaded the gathering.”
Rhodes or Rhoades Family in Oklahoma

I am looking for more information on my great great grandparents Charles (H or K) Rhodes/Rhoades 1859 and Peggie Lathe 1863. Their daughter Ellen (Ella) Nancy Rhodes/Rhoades appears in the Dawes Index. I have hit a wall with Peggie I can not seem to find any further info on her. Charles's Father was George Washington Rhoades/Rhodes Sr. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look next?
Just been re reading your message to me in jan......I think I misunderstood the connection. I am a bit confused about the Electa connection. It is your wife who is connected to her. And do I understand correctly that your g gf listed Thomas and Elect Rhoads Clark as his parents. I did find a bit more on her and hall.....will need to go back and look at it. I have two projects going on and go back an forth between them.........If you can think of anything else that might give me some more clues in our search please let me know......I would appreciate it so much......It would seem that maybe Electa and Clark married in Calumet Co Wi at least their son indicates he was born there. So that would mean he was more then likely born on the Indian Reservation there......Have you done a census search for 1860 calument Co Wi? The thing that got me to wondering was how did my gtgt.grandmother get down here to southern Illiniois, where was the rest of her family? Well, they were in the next county over from Jackson Co.......where she live in later life. But she was in Perry Co. IL where my gt grandmother born. Oh how they did get about with just horse and a wagon. lol Hopefully we can pull this puzzle all together. Keep in contact please......thanks Kay James

I am also researching Erastus Rhodes, though his son, William Henry Rhodes. William married Margaret Ann Hayes, in Iowa. They had three children in Iowa, then moved to Roseburg, Douglas, Oregon and can be found on the 1900 census. Erastus is living wth them. William and Margaret (Maggie) had more children in Oregon, then my grandmother, Nedra Rhodes, was born in Iowa in 1903. I cannot find a trace of William again with Margaret, but know she married two more times. Their son, William Henry Rhodes, Jr. died in 1930 and William is mentioned at living. My cousin told me he had moved to Nebraska and had another family. I believe I have found him, but not sure as I like to obtain documentation. I had heard about an Indian connection, and have a picture of my grandmother and her mother, Orphrenia Bixler Hayes with an Indian blanket in the background. Not sure of a connection though.

Thank you for the info. I found that Ernest was my "Rhodes ancestor's" middle name which he was called but his real first name was Frank. His parents were Stephen G. Rhodes and Susan Marie De Jarnette. My Rhodes ancestry started in Rhode Island to New York, Kentucky, Missouri, and then Washington State. Frank or Ernest was born and died in Missouri. His father was born in Kentucky and grandfather was born in New York and great grandfather born in Rhode Island.
