I have inherited a postcard which shows a man standing outside a Salvation Army "Industrial Store". The reverse says "Received from Cousin John (Brigadier Richards Newark America) August 9th 1927 at Bronwennau." Bronwennau is in Cardiganshire. My gg grandmother was a Richards. Does this ring any bells anywhere? [NB I have a suspicion that the term Brigadier is heavy irony or a nickname]

Thanks
Jen

John W Richards

Hello,

I am looking for info about a John Richards that was in the Cheswick / Springdale / Harmar, Allegheny Co. PA. area in 1910. The 1910 census shows he was born 1881 in Virginia and then moved to PA. and was married to Elizabeth B. Remaley. I know that they had 3 children before Elizabeth dies in 1918 of the Spanish Flu. Don't know what happened to Mr. Richards after his wife's death. Does anyone have this John Richards in their line. My wife is his great grand daughter so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Also, a 1920 US census shows a John W Richards ( widowed ) living in Allegheny county PA. with a sister, Mary C Richards and a son, ( maybe the sisters boy ? )Herman Richards. Although it shows his birth place as Pennsylvania instead of Virginia, I think this may be the same John W Richards that was married to Eizabeth B. Remaley shown in the 1910 census. Does anyone have any info about this family ?

Great information, thanks! That convinces me that you're right that Mary's parents were Mahershalalhashbaz and Mary (Nancarrow) Webster. I guess the FamilySearch search engine just isn't prepared for all the different variations of Mahershalalhashbaz!

I also see Mahershalalhashbaz's christening record (Illogan, 11 JUL 1725, to Thomas Wepstar), but I see a couple of different possibilities for Mary Nancarrow. If you've already got her line figured out, let me know, otherwise, I think I might start research that direction. I love Cornish language names like "Nancarrow," it's nice to have a break from researching patronymic surnames for once. The Cornish Surnames Rootsweb site says that it's from the Cornish "nans-carow," or "valley of stag or deer."

I just noticed, too, that Mahershalalhashbaz Richards (the son of Henry and Mary (Webster) Richards) was christened only 4 months after his parents married. So I have no doubt that Mahershalalhashbaz Webster had a say in his grandson's name!

My direct descent from the Mark I mentioned earlier, by the way, is directly matrilineal from his daughter:

1. Mark Richards (1825-1865) m. Mary Thomas
2. Jane (Richards) Kempthorne (1846-1845) m. Charles Kempthorne
3. Mary Rosena (Kempthorne) Scantlebury (1872-1936) m. Charles H. Scantlebury
4. Hazel May (Scantlebury) Lane (1912-2008) m. Jack Ivor Smith, divorced, then Jess Lane
5. Janice Lo-Ree (Smith/Lane) Kelley (1939-1996) m. my living grandfather, divorced
6. My living mother m. my living father
7. Me

Another interesting descendant of Mark Richards via Jane is a fellow named Dirk Kempthorne, who has been quite successful in American politics. You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk_Kempthorne

Fun fact: he swore into offices using the Bible owned by Charles and Jane (Richards) Kempthorne, here's a picture of him doing so for the position of Secretary of Interior: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dirk_Kempthorne_sworn_in_a...

Hello Scott,
My apologies, I forgot to add that I have found on the IGI site a couple of entries indicating that Mary was indeed the daughter of Mahershalalhashbaz Webster and Mary nee Nancarrow, but with slight variants on the spelling! One entry for Mary's christening is 23rd August 1754 to Meharshalalhasba WEPSTAR and Mary NANCARROW at Illogan, Cornwall. The second entry I've found has been for Mary Webster birth 1754, christening 23 Aug 1754 at Illogan, parents Meharshalalhashba Wepstar and Mary NANCARROW, spouse Henry RICHARDS, marriage 26 July 1773 Illogan and finally I have a marriage of Mahershalalhashbay WEBSTER to Mary NECARROW 21 October 1751. Mahershalalhashbaz Webster's parents listed as Thomas Webster and Honour.

Cheers for now
Marsy

Hello Scott,
Great to add you into a wide and ever widening Richards tree. I've been fortunate to have handwritten notes handed down from previous Richards scribes and generations who write of Mahershalalhashbaz Webster giving a sizeable dowry if the first born son of Henry Richards and daughter Mary Webster were to name the child Mahershalalhashbaz. This name continued to the next generation, followed then by my great grandfather. The name appears again this century, with a recent (within the past two years) addition to the Richards family in England.
Its great to hear and read of individual people in our ancestry, to know their life's journey. Thank you for your message and I'd welcome any other snippets of information.
Regards
Marsy

Re: Mahershalalhashbaz Richards of Porthtowan Cornwall and Goolwa South Australia

Greetings from a relative. I have recently found that I'm a fellow descendant of Mahershalalhashbaz's great-grandfather, Henry Richards.

Henry's grandson via Benjamin, Mark Richards, is my immigrant ancestor along the Richards line. He came to America in the early 1850s, where he continued work as a miner. He joined the Union cause when the Civil War broke out, serving as a Provost Marshal, a job which earned him the scorn of some pro-Southern neighbors. He was shot by a concealed gunman and died as a result.

One question I have for you: How do you know that Mary (Webster) Richards, wife of Henry Richards, was the daughter of Mahershalalhashbaz Webster? The only possible christening record I can find for Mary in the IGI is for a daughter of Thomas and Ann Webster, not Mahershalalhashbaz and Mary Webster. I know that the use of that particular name in the family is compelling evidence to connect Mary Webster to Mahershalalhashbaz Webster, but perhaps he was an uncle or something instead?

Hello Claire,
Glad to be able to fit another piece in your family jigsaw.
Elizabeth Dyas Botten was born 1859 and is the younger sister of our mutual direct ancestor, Sophia Martha Botten who married Mahershalalhashbaz (known as Marc) Richards. Their parents were Elizabeth nee Dyas and William James Botten. The children of these parents are as follows, including Sophia Martha 1852-1939, Robert 1853-1935, William James jnr 1855, then Elizabeth Dyas 1859-1878, followed by Edward 1860-1860, Charles 1861, Joseph 1866-1932 and Henry Herbert 1870-1949. Two Richards sisters married Langsfords, were the Langsford men brothers? Not sure which Richards girl would be your grandmother, either Effie Joan or Eva? Love to receive a reply From Marsy406

Hi Marie and all. I have in my possession (passed down from family) an exquisitely beautiful " IN MEMORIAL " paper for an ancestor of yours and mine. It is for ELIZABETH DYAS BOTTEN who died May 21st 1878 aged 19 years. The only Elizabeth Dyas Botten I can find is the mother of SOPHIA MARTHA RICHARDS (who married Marc) but the dates dont work out. It really is a gorgeous little thing and I want to frame it but wonder if you can help me work out where she fits in. My mother IRENE ELTHAM LANGSFORD, was a granddaughter of SOPHIA MARTHA AND MARC if you are wondering where I fit in. Many thanks Claire

When you say that the Richards' family were "from" Ruabon do you mean they were born, married and died there? Do you have any more concrete information?

There is certainly no death record for a Richard Richards in Ruabon in 1849. But there is a burial for an Elizabeth Richards in Ruabon on 15 Sep 1832, age 47.

Please excuse me for crossing over from Sarah Jane Anderson to Richards, but I need to ask you help and can not get into the old posts.

I'm starting to reseach Sarah Anderson (1815-1900). I found Andy's, Oxdrover, 2003 posts to you in the Anderson-L archives. He suggested that I email you about the KY-Andersons.

I believe Sarah Anderson is the sister of William D Anderson and Amajor Anderson. She married Henry Edwards in Morgan County, IL in 1834.

Do you now the names of her their parents?

Thank you, Laura Morrison Lynchburg, VA

Re: Mary Elizabeth Richards b.abt1842 Lountesbury married to James Webber b.abt1842 North Molton, Devon

Dear Judy
I have something that will definitely interest you if you haven't seen it before, found during a House History I am doing of Ty Commins in the Grwyney Fechan valley. James Webber and family were apparently resident up there at one time (prob. mid 1870's), and certainly James was there in 1895, along with John Hooper, who was resident for the 1891 and 1901 censuses. Both were gamekeepers for the Glanusk estate. The legal account below is a night-poaching case is in the local archive at the Crickhowell and District Archive Centre. I have just this evening transcribed it and then googled Lountesbury and saw your query...Hope you enjoy reading it!
Although I am mainly interested in the House, if you have some more information about James Webber, such as his previous life in Devon, I'd be really grateful!
Regards
Adrian Cook
_________________________________________________________

Breconshire Lent Assizes 1898
The Queen on the prosecutor of
James Webber
against
William Evans

Put on bail

Night poaching

Brief for the Prosecutor

The indictment states that the jurors for our sovereign Lady the Queen upon their oath present that William Evans of the parish of St Michael Cwmdu in the sd. Coy. of Brecon on the 14th day of November 1895 at the Hamlet of Grwynefechan in the sd. Coy. of Brecon together with divers other persons to the number of 3 or more together about the hour of 1 o’clock in the night of the same day being then respectively arrived with a Gun together unlawfully did enter a certain close of land then in the occupn. of Sir Russell Bailey.

Case

On Sunday morning the 14th of November 1895 between 1 & 2 o’clock the Prosecutor James Webber and George Hooper, two Gamekeepers then in the employ of Sir Joseph Bailey & Mr Miles, were watching in a shed adjoining the dwelling house then occupied by Webber called Tycomin near the Hermitage in the Coy. While there they heard two shots fired in the direction of a Plantation or Game Cover called the Bettw Plantation. Webber taking his gun with him & Hooper a walking stick, they went towards the Plantatn., & on their way there they heard three more shots fired. They went into the Plantation & saw six men there with guns in their hands. The defendant was one of them. Hooper got to the men first & one of them pointed his gun at him & xcalled out “Stand off or you’ll get the contents of this.” Webber who was close by said “If you’ll shoot that man I’ll shoot you or the first man that shoots.” The Defendant then sd. “Let there be no shooting”. The gun was then lowered. Webber then said to them that if they left ioff shooting & would go to his house he would give them some whiskey. They said it was not whiskey they wanted but they wanted a pheasant each. Webber said he couldn’t consent to them killing any more birds. They then all left the plantation together & went to a road leading to the Hermitage & walked together along the road for about a mile until they got opposite to the Hermitage & Webber, Hooper and the Defendant stopped there. The rest of the men went on up the road. The Defendant had some conversation with the keepers & Webber told him that if he heard any more shooting he would follow them. The Defendant then went up the road after his companions & the Keepers went to the Hermitage House & called up a man who lived there called John Jones. He joined them soon after & accompanied the Keepers up the road in the direction taken by the Poachers. When the Keepers had gone along the road a short distance they heard some more shots fired ahead of them. They then went on up the road until they overtook the six men, & Webber said to them that he thought they had promised not to shoot any more, but they didn’t say anything to him & began singing & went along the road towards Talymaes Bridge, the Keepers accompanying them. When they got near the Bridge Webber told Hooper to go to the gate across the bridge & shut it & not to let them pass. Hooper went & shut the gate. One of their men (David Edwards?) attempted to go over the gate & Hooper caught hold of him to stop him. The man caught him by the throat & tried to choke him but hooper hit him with the walking stick & got free from him. Two or three of the men then attacked Hooper & in the scuffle his stick was taken from him by the Defendant. At the same time three or four of the men went at Webber & got him down on the ground. One of them hit him in the face & the others dragged his gun from him. He then got up & the Defendant caught hold of him tightly by the throat. Webber then took a life preserver out if his pocket & hit the defendant on the head with it but failed to knock him down. Three or four of the men then rushed at Webber & got him down again. After they got off him the Defendant thrashed Webber while down on the ground so severely with a stick that he cried out “Murder. For God’s sake don’t beat me any more.” While this was going on one of the other men (Frances Prosser) was pointing Webber’s gun (which was loaded) towards him & kept cocking & uncocking it. The defendant then stopped beating Webber who then got up, & he asked Webber if he would go home. Webber & Hooper then went towards home & the Poachers followed them for some distance & the Defendant kept hitting Webber with the stick across his arms & shoulders now & again for about a hundred yards when the men turned back & went towards the Bridge & the Keepers went home. While on the ground Hooper was struck by one of the men with the stock of a gun which broke off from the violence of the blow, & he saw the Defendant striking Webber with the stick.
It was a moonlight night & the moon was at the full & shone brightly during the time they were all walking together along the road to the Hermitage.
The Betw plantation is the property of Sir Jos. Bailey & was then in his own occupation & kept as a game preserve & there were pheasants there on the night in question.
There was a brownish coloured dog with the poachers with one ear shorter than the other.
Webber went to Crickhowell on the same morning & gave information to the Police & on the following day (the 15th) he laid an information against the defendant & two of the other men for night poaching & obtained a warrant for their apprehension. On the day after (Tuesday the 16th,) Webber went with a police constable to a farm called Rhydvawr where the Defendant was in service as a farm-servant in order to apprehend him but he could not be found. He had absconded. When at Rhydvawr he say a brown dog which he identified as being the dog that was with the Poachers on the night in question. The defendant left the neighbourhood & was not seen or heard of until recently when he was apprehended upon the charge of night-poaching & committed for trial ‘bail’ being accepted. The Defendant returned to the service of the same master, Mr Charles Prosser who now lives at the Gerfordd(?) Farm.
There were four men charged with this offence before the Magistrates at Crickhowell soon after its commission in Novr. 1895 namely John Pugh, David Edwards, Frances Prosser & John Edwards. The Justices discharged John Pugh but the others were committed for trial at the Assizes & they were inducted at the Breconshire Lent Assizes in 1896. The case as against John Edwards was withdrawn, & the other two men were acquitted by the Jury although the evidence against them was clear and conclusive.
Webber was much bruised & injured by the blows he received from the stick used by the Defendant & he shewed them to a Surgeon… on the day on which they were inflicted & he will prove the nature & effect of the injuries. Both Webber and Hooper clearly identify the Defendant As having been one of the poachers & as the person who beat Webber with the stick. Although it appears from the evidence taken upon the former trial that the men had their faces blackened yet as it was a clear moonlight night & as both the Keepers had ample time & opportunity for observing the Defendant they have no doubt about his identity.
Hi Tina,

I know this message you left is 10 years old but hopefully you still check in on it from time to time.

I would like to discuss your Richards and Canter families with you.

Our study group is working on a extensive family project to research and rebuild over 500 local and long-standing families of the Southern Maryland area. The Richards and Canter families are among them. We are working on all lines and in some cases been able to work these families back to the 1600 and 1700s.

Please contact me at: cbs196395@yahoo.com if you would be interested in sharing information.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks, Wanda

Mrs. J. B. Richards historical writer in 1895 Georgia

I've found a reference to a Mrs. J.B. Richards who is referred to as writing a compilation of the history of Fort Buffington the removal fort in Cherokee County, Georgia. She was supposed to have written this history with the help of Major T.D. Evans who was one of the guards at the fort. The fort was supposed to have the buildings dismantled and on display at the 1895 Atlanta Exposition. As a local Georgia historian, I am wondering if this historical document exists and if it was preserved? Who is this Mrs. J.B. Richards?
Leslie Barker Thomas

Richards- Clarence Leroy, Polk County, OR

I am researching my Husbands Richards family. His grandfather Billie Ray Richards was born in Hubbard, Texas in 1938 and died in Polk County, Oregon in 1972. I know his family lived in the Polk County, Oregon for awhile. His parents were Clarence Leroy Richards and Mattie Ella (King) Snitcker. Clarence Leroy Richards was born in 1904 and died in Polk County in 1989. Mattie Ella was I believe born as Mattie Ella King but from what I understand her father died and she was adopted by her step father and became Mattie Ella Snitcker. She was born in Eden, Texas in 1915. She died in Polk County, Oregon. Billie Ray Richards had several siblings, Patsie, Albert Wayne, Edward Leroy, Hattie and Verna. I am trying to find Clarence and Mattie's family lines. I haven't been able to make it further back from them. If you have any information or common ancestors, let me know and maybe we can compare notes.
Erin Rivera

Re: Richards Indian history?

The only John Richards that I have information on was born sometime in the early 1700. He was a JR and his grandparents were Isaac & Phoebe Richards. John Richards did have a son named William Bird Richards (1-5-1777 in PA) and may have had other children.
If you could provide any information to help me, that would be great! It has been hard finding anything on the Richards family....
