Harold Richardson - Melbourne Victoria Australia

Hi, looking for Harold Richardson who lived in or near the Oakleigh area of Melbourne. We believe he may have also worked in this area as a motor mechanic around 1947. Would love to find any info on him at all. We estimate he may have been born about 1927. I can not find any trace of him but we know he existed. He knew the McFarlane family of Oakleigh. Thanks!

I'm looking for information on the son of a Joyce R Richardson. I don't know much, but I know she lived in San Bernardino, CA for a while and then in Las Vegas, Nevada. She married in Vegas in 1965 to Paul Albert Bonelli. I believe they had a son together (maybe before they married?), but I'm not sure of his name. Paul died a year later in 1966.

If you have any info on Joyce or her son, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks!

George RICHARDSON, b. abt. 1780, of Wroot, Lincolnshire, England

I am looking for descendants of George RICHARDSON, b. abt. 1780 in England, to determine whether or not George is my ancestor. George and his wife Ann had five children all born in Wroot, Lincolnshire between 1803-1809: George Jr., Thomas, Samuel, Robert, and Hannah. George, Jr. (my ancestor) married Mary Ann PEARSON, had children baptized at Hatfield Parish, Yorkshire, immigrated to Canada, then moved to Michigan. Robert married Susannah MAW then Susannah STANDRING and stayed in England. Hannah married William MAW and stayed in England. I do not know what happened to Thomas and Samuel. Besides a paper trail, my brother has had his Y-DNA tested so if we can find a male descendant carrying the RICHARDSON name, who has had that testing done, we can compare test results to see if we share a common ancestor.

Linda (RICHARDSON)

Origin of William Richardson Sr. (~1640-1697) of Maryland

Greetings,

I am looking for additional information regarding the origin of William Richardson (Abt 1640-1697), the well-known Quaker of Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. Three cases from the literature can be made regarding his origin:

(1) He was the son of Robert Richardson and Susannah Smith of Virginia, and came over from England with his father in 1634/5 on board the "Paul".

(2) He immigrated directly himself from England, in 1655 or 1666, perhaps on board the ship "Constant Friendship".

(3) He immigrated as an indentured servant, either to Richard Preston (a prominant Maryland Quaker) or to Major Richard Ewen, his future father-in-law.

CASE I: WILLIAM RICHARDSON WAS THE SON OF ROBERT RICHARDSON

This interpretation of William Richardson's background was first encounered in the 1905, "Founders of Anne Arundel and Howard Counties" book. The link to Robert Richard was not specifically spelled out.
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: THE FOUNERS OF ANNE ARUNDEL AND HOWARD COUNTIES, MARYLAND.
A Genealogical and Biographical Review from wills, deeds and church records.
BY J. D. WARFIELD, A. M., KOHN & POLLOCK, Publishers, Baltimore, Md. (1905).

web: http://www.archive.org/stream/foundersofannear00warf/founder...

WILLIAM RICHARDSON, OF WEST RIVER, ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY,

A friend of William Penn, he came to Virginia in the "Paul," of London, in 1634. He removed to Maryland in 1666, and became a member of the Lower House of the Assembly from 1676 to 1683. He was frequently the bearer of messages to the Upper House with instructions from Parliament (p. 175).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
Instead of William, however, a passenger list for the "Paul" in 1635 shows a Robert Richardson, landing in the West Indies:
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Coldham, Peter Wilson (editor), The complete book of emigrants, Genealogical Pub. New York: Lewis Historical Pub. He married Elizabeth, who died January 1, 1703-04, daughter of Major Richard and Sophia Ewen, of West River. She married (second) William Richardson, Sr., of West River, son of Robert Richardson, of Somerset county, Maryland. The late Howard Mullikin, of Cathedral street, Baltimore, was a descendant of William and Elizabeth (Ewen) (Talbott) Richardson.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
And later in 1971 by Harry Richardson of the Richardson Heritage Society:
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taken from Richardson Heritage Society 12-71 (Harry Richardson (ed), Broken Bow, Nebraska):

Robert RICHARDSON (1615-1682)

Robert Richardson, born in England in 1615, embarked from Gravesend, England, April 3, 1635, in the ship "Paul", for St Christophus, with Shipmaster Jo. Acklin. (Hooten "Emigrants to America", Page 50). Robert Richardson landed near Pongateaque, Accomack County, Virginia marrying Susanna Smith, daughter of Richard Smith...[snip]...

Children of Robert Richardson and Susanna Smith are:
i. William Richardson, born 03 Apr 1640 in Pongateaque, Accomack, Virginia (England?); died Abt. 1697 in West River, Frederick, Maryland; married Elizabeth Ewen Abt. 1667 in West River, Frederick, Maryland.
ii. Robert Richardson, born Abt. 1663 in Hungers Parish, Northampton, Virginia.
iii. Elizabeth Richardson, born Abt. 1665 in Hungers Parish, Northampton, Virginia.
iv. Susanna Richardson, born Abt. 1667 in Hungers Parish, Northampton, Virginia.
v. Tabitha Richardson, born Abt. 1670 in Hungers Parish, Northampton, Virginia.
vi. Charles Richardson, born Abt. 1672 in Mt Ephraim, Somerset, Maryland.
vii. Sarah Richardson, born Abt. 1674 in Mt Ephraim, Somerset, Maryland; married Thomas Mumford.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
The primary problem with the above story is the awkward 23 year gap between the birth of William (1640) and the next child, Robert Jr. (1663), which looks rather out of place and unrealistic. In personal correspondence (~1985) with Harry Richardson, I learned that he had come to the conclusion that William Richardson (1640) was the original immigrant, and not the son of Robert (above). This is supported in the recent, 2007 work below:
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5, 4th Edition, Volume 3, Families R-Z, compiled by John Frederick Dorman (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc., 2007), p. 197-199 (Richard Smith Family).

web: http://espl-genealogy.org/MilesFiles/p586.htm#i58596

Robert Richardson
M, b. circa 1635, d. September 1682

Robert was born circa 1635. Robert patented land on 5 April 1666 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Richardson patented 500 acres in Accomack County adjoining 450 acres at the head of Occahannock Creek that was formerly Richard Smith's, "now in the possession of the said Robert." He was issued a patent, 9 Nov 1666 for 2,000 acres near Bockanoctun and when it was discovered the land was in Maryland he secured a new patent for this land, "Mount Ephraim," in Bogerternorton Hundred, Somerset Co, MD, 20 Dec 1675. On 13 Jun 1671 he proved rights for 550 acres for transporting himself, his wife Susan, son William, daughters Elizabeth, Susan and Tobia (Tabitha), and four servants from Virginia into Maryland..1 He married Susan (3) Smith, daughter of Richard (1) Smith, before 5 April 1666.1 Robert sold land on 23 October 1668 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Richardson sold to Devorax Browne and Thomas Bowles 50 acres, being part of the 200 acres of land formerly granted to Richard Smith by patent of 18 Nov 1618 and by him given to Susanna, his daughter, now wife of said Robert. Suan Richardson joined in the deed..1 Robert died in September 1682 at Somerset Co, MD.1 His body was interred on 10 September 1682 at Mount Ephraim, Som Co, MD.1

Family
Susan (3) Smith b. c 1642
Children
William (6) Richardson b. c 1666, d. c 1710
Elizabeth (7) Richardson+ b. c 1668
Susannah (8) Richardson+ b. c 1670
Tabitha (9) Richardson b. c 1672, d. c 1700
Robert (10) Richardson b. c 1674, d. c 1700
Charles (11) Richardson+ b. c 1676, d. b 18 Apr 1727
Sarah (12) Richardson+ b. c 1678

William (6) Richardson1
M, b. circa 1666, d. circa 1710

Father	Robert Richardson b. c 1635, d. William was under age 16 in 1680, devised one-half of "Mount Ephraim" and sold his inheritance, as 500 acres, 9 Jul 1693, having purchased his sister Elizabeth's portion the day before, and mentioned in 1713 as having departed this Province 20 years and in all men's opinion deceased.1 William died circa 1710.1
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
Leading us conclude that Robert Richardson's son William is not the same person as our William Richardson Sr.

CASE II: WILLIAM RICHARDSON IMMIGRATED HIMSELF IN 1655-1666

The first alternative is that William Richardson immigrated himself to America in 1655, possibly on board the ship "Constant Friendship":
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Colonial Families of the United States of America: Volume 3 (Genealogical Publishing Company, 1966 - 740 pages); [p.47 COLONAL ANCBSTRY OF REEBCCA DAVIS COOMES

web: http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=48548

WILLIAM RICHARDSON, SR., d. 1697, immigrant from England in the ship "Constant Friendship," in 1655, settled in Maryland, and from 1678 to 1683 was a member of the Assembly from Anne Arundel County, serving on the committee that regulated the defense and military affairs of the colony. Samuel Tilghman. The evidence is circumstancial, so far:
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
web: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~helmsnc/ad...

Samuel Tilghman, Admiral, Born 1618. He sailed the Atlantic for 15 years.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Bound by God for Merryland: The Voyage of the Constant Friendship 1671-1672, by John F. The book states that the Constant
Friendship had made at least one earlier trip to Maryland in 1666 and four
later trips. The book states "Edward Rhodes journal is the only account we
have of any of her voyages and is the only known account of any English
ship sailing to the Severn River in the seventeenth century."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
There is a better, more compelling story in the next case, which adds to the above:

CASE III: WILLIAM RICHARDSON CAME TO AMERICA AS AN INDENTURED SERVANT

This case in initially presented in "A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature 1635-1789", published in 1985:
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature 1635-1789 by Edward C. BORN: probably in England. IMMIGRATED: probably in 1655 as an indentured servant. RESIDED: on "Watkin's His Hope," West River Hundred, Anne Arundel County. MARRIED by 1668 Elizabeth (?-1703/4), widow of Richard Talbott (?-1663), daughter of Richard Ewen (?-1660). Elizabeth was the stepdaughter of William Burgess (ca. 1622-1686/87). Her brothers were Richard; John (?-1669). Her sisters were Ann; Sophia (?-1671); and Susanna (?-1664/65). CHILDREN. SONS: William (1668-1744), who married in 1689 Margaret Smith (ca. 1673-1756); Daniel (1670-1722), who married first, ca. 1691, Elizabeth Welsh (?-1712), and second, Ruth Ball Leeds (1677-1728); Joseph (1671-by 1678); and Joseph (1678-1748), who married in 1705 Sarah Thomas (1689-1724). STEPSONS. Edward Talbott (?-ca. 1691), who married Elizabeth Thomas, widow of William Coale; Richard Talbott; and John Talbott. DAUGHTERS: Sophia Elizabeth (1675-1678); Sophia (Sophiah, Sapphira) (1680-?), who married Thomas Sparrow; and Elizabeth (1680-?). STEPDAUGHTER: Elizabeth Talbott. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Quaker; minister of West River Meeting, Anne Arundel County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES. probably transported as servant to Richard Preston (ca. 1618-ca.1669/70), a prominent Quaker on the Western Shore; appointed by Meeting to correspond with Friends in Barbadoes, 1680. OC- CUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter; merchant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Anne Arundel County, 1676 1682 (Security and Defense 2), 1682-1684 (Laws 2). LOCAL OFFICE: commissioned to survey and manage the building of the Londontowne Courthouse, Anne Arundel County. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: fined in 1662 for refusing to serve in the militia; active in efforts of Quakers to obtain relief from re- quirement of oaths and military service; argued in favor of making West River Landing a port of entry for the area, 1683. WEALTH DURING LIFE- TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 500 tO 1,000 acres in Anne Arundel County. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will probated on May 28, 1698, in Anne Arundel County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £655.8.5 (including 13 slaves and merchandise worth £119.5.6); FB, £603.0.0. LAND. 975 acres in Anne Arundel County.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
Look under both "IMMIGRATED" and "SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES". The indication here is that William came over intially as an indentured servant, "probably" to Richard Preston. A better alternative as to his particular patron is contained in the 1907 "Some Prominent Virginia Families".
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Some Prominent Virginia Families. They came with the Chews, Coles, Thomases, Ewens, Sparrows, Hutchens and Pierponts. Some of her immediate ancestors were prominent men in the early history of the Colony. Among them was William Richardson, a leading citizen of Anne Arundel Co., for many years a member of the General Assembly. He came to Maryland with Maj. Richard Ewen, before 1650. He was Major in the forces of the Colony; Speaker of the Assembly several times; member of the Council, and one of the "High Commissioners," to govern Maryland under Protector Cromwell. Maj. Ewen was one of the first to take up land on the Patapsco River. On November 19, 20, 21, and 22, 1655, Lord Baltimore, Surveyor General, laid out tracts of land on the Patapsco River for several persons, including Maj. Ewen and Thomas Sparrow, also an ancestor of Elizabeth Richardson. The land taken up by Thomas Sparrow has since been known as "Sparrow's Point." John Chew and his son, Samuel Chew, were also members of the General Assembly and among the most prominent men in the Colony. Both left large estates for their day.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
The key point being that William Richardson "came to Maryland with Maj. Richard Ewen, before 1650," we have a potential record of that here:
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: The Early Settlers of Maryland: An Index to Names of Immigrants Compiled from Records of Land Patents, 1633-1680, in the Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland. Richardson.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
William perhaps being one of the "four other persons" listed with Richard Ewen. A similar story is actually told back in the first book that I mentioned (in Case I):
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: THE FOUNERS OF ANNE ARUNDEL AND HOWARD COUNTIES, MARYLAND.
A Genealogical and Biographical Review from wills, deeds and church records.
BY J. D. WARFIELD, A. M., KOHN & POLLOCK, Publishers, Baltimore, Md. (1905).

http://www.archive.org/stream/foundersofannear00warf/founder...

West River was the abode of Richard Talbott in 1649; he was a Quaker. His wife was Ehzabeth, oldest daughter of Major Richard Ewen, who that same year brought his wife, Sophia, five children and three servants at his own charges, for which he demanded and re- ceived, in 1650, a patent for 1,000 acres. The issue of Richard and Elizabeth were Richard, Edward, John and Ehzabeth, wife of Ben- jamin Lawrence. "Poplar Knawle" was left by his will of 1663 to Richard; "Talbotts Ridge" to his sons, Edward and John, jointly; to Elizabeth his personalty. Richard Galloway was a witness.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
William perhaps being one of the "three servants" mentioned as coming with Richard Ewen. The "Early Settlers of Maryland" immigrant index may be the more correct account (4 family plus 4, rather than 5 family plus 3), if Richard Ewen's daughter Elizabeth was already in Maryland with her then husband, Richard Talbot, at the time that the rest of her family arrived. Either way, it seems that the additional persons that Richard Ewen brought with him were servants.

It may be, therefore, that William Richardson Sr. began as an indentured servant to Maj. Richard Ewen, immigrating with him to Maryland in 1649. This would also put him into a position to get to know Elizabeth Talbot (Ewen), and to later wed her after Richard Talbot's death in 1663. In other words, Wiliam Richardon intially came to America as an indentured servant to his future father-in-law.

Further information regarding William Richardson Sr.'s place of origin in England, details about his immigration, and possible indenture (and to whom) would be most appreciated.

-- Jim Richardson

I had another look and came up with the same family. Sometimes names are in different order as in the case of Thomas Joseph/Joseph Thomas. If you have his birth certificate, you must know his mother's maiden name and if it was Fuller then this is the right family.

It is possible that Basil,s mothers maiden name was Fuller. There was a possible marriage between a Joseph Thomas Richardson and an Ada Francis Fuller in Farnham in 1897. If these are the right family then in 1911 they were living in Frimley Green, Farnborough and they had 2 sons and 2 daughters, Thomas, George,Anine (Annie?) and Violet.
I hope this helps.
Mike

Re: Richards morphing into Richardson?

The "morphing" has happened many times over. In my case, my Grandfather, whose surname was Richardson, appeared in the 1880 Kansas census as Richards. My guess due to a sloppy, and/or lazy census taker, in a hurry to finish the job. After all, my Grandfather's parents lived next door, and they are noted with the proper surname of Richardson.

I wish you good fortune in your search............

Best,

Jane (Richardson) Creighton

Richards morphing into Richardson?

I was just wondering how many of you have encountered the Richardson name morphing from/into Richards. Obviously I understand the whole "Richard's son" meaning etc., and I know that in the past last names were not as "stable" as they are today. But still, I was just wondering if you have personal examples of this happening with Richards/Richardson.
I have traced my Richardson line back to the late 1700s in the fishing village of Brixham, England, but there the records seem to hit a brick wall. I *think* I may have found the reason for my difficulties in going further back - the man who was known as Stephen Richardson when he married in 1790 *may* have been known as Stephen Richards at birth. But I'm going to have to dig further.

They came to Franklin between 1800 and 1810 following the children from her previous marriage - Lucy Joy (m. Nathan Colvin Johnson in 1801), Ephraim Joy, and Benjamin Joy. I don't know how Abigail Richardson is related.
