Re: Thomas Riches - Ipswich, England

Is this the Thomas Riches born 1808 and married Susan Sarah Ramsbotham on 29.5.1831 at Onehouse, Suffolk? If so, Susan Martha had younger sister Laura Maria who is my Gr, Gr grandmother. Susan Ramsbotham may be from Woolpit, father John and mother Susan Late Parsons b. 1814 Woolpit. I am looking for the parents of Thomas Riches b.1808. I do know that legend has it Thomas Riches was captain of four masted ship called Mary which sailed to Tasmania via Cape Horn at least once with his wife Susan on board. It was lost in Dec 1894 on way from Seaham to Ipswich. He is also said to have owned the Pearl which was an east coast trader. His probate states him as master mariner and Susan appears on census as shipowner. I am trying to see if there is a connection between this Thomas Riches and a Tho. Riches who died rescuing his 12 year old son when their ship, the Prince of Orange of Ipswich, (carrying coals), was shipwrecked on the beach at Cley, Norfolk in Sept 1816.

Seeking information on MARJORIE CORDELIA MIGNOT (Cornwall 1897-1950 London), her husband ALFRED T. RICHES (no dates), and any children. Marjorie was the granddaughter of American artist Louis Rémy Mignot (1831-1870), the subject of my research.

Hi Trevor (cousin?!)

Well, Cliff and Alice (my grandparents) had 6 surviving children (my aunts/uncles): Joan, Margarent (Peg), Dorothy (Dot), Elsie, George (my father) and James (Jim). Most of the clan still live down that way except for my Dad (George) who is in Darwin.

Cliff died relatively young, in his 50's (around 1950) from a heart attack. Apparently a blood clot from an old wound reached his heart - heart disease would have been pretty rare in those days!

He served in the first world war as a stretcher bearer and I was recently at the War Memorial museum in Canberra where they showed me how to access information from the national archives website. There I found copies of papers from his time during the war and he was apparently a bit of a ratbag!

He was given land as a 'reward' for his service in the war, so he commenced apple farming in Mt Barker. To supplement the family income, he also worked on the railway.

My Dad also had a cousin, Bill Riches, who passed away recently. His wife's name is Iris and they were living in Albany last time I saw them. I'm not sure how he is connected, but it is likely that he was the son of one of the other brothers (Cliff/Robin etc).

Hope this has enlightened you! The national archives website is a great place to look for stuff if you haven't been there already.

I'd be really interested to know any other info :)

Thanks

Joycee

Hi, I am a Riches by birth and am tracing my family tree. Have got back to a Samuel Riches born in Norfolk 1822 and is my great great grandfather. I am trying to find out the maiden name of his wife Charlotte, born 1828 in Berkshire. This is the generation in my tree that left Norfolk and went to London. My own father was born in Cornwall so had no idea we originated in Norfolk, where there seem to be many 'RICHES'. If anybody has come across Samuel & Charlotte Riches in their research, and found out her maiden name, i would be very grateful for help. Thank You

Re: origin of Riches name

I have found the following about the origin.
1.	Firstly, it may be of Old French origin, from a nickname for a wealthy person, deriving from the Middle English "riche", a development of the Old French "riche" meaning rich, wealthy; the term was introduced into England after the Conquest of 1066.
2.	Secondly, it may be a patronymic of the medieval given name "Rich", a short form of the personal name "Richard", composed of the Old German elements "ric", power, with "hard", hardy, brave, strong. The given name was found occasionally in Anglo-Saxon England, but was popularized by the Normans after 1066.
3.	Thirdly, the surname RICHES may be of Anglo-Saxon origin, from a locational or a topographical name derived from the Olde English "ric", stream, drainage channel. As a locational surname, RICHES comes from any of the minor places named with this element, such as Glynde Reach in Sussex, or the now "lost" village of Riche in Leicestershire. As a topographical name, it denoted residence by a stream or channel, the plural form being the genitive case; "of Riche/Reach" or "of the stream".
Just noticed your 'long shot' of last year as I have a RICHES back in my family and this is an even longer shot.

I am researching the PIPE Name and my Grandfather Samuel Pipe married a Caroline Susanna Riches in 1880. She was born in Middlesex abt 1862 and died in Fressingfield, 19th August 1885.

If anyone has any info on Caroline I would appreciate hearing.
As I have just come across your message and I have only just started researching through ancestry it may take some time to find a connection but I am on the case. Hope to hear from you with any more information...

Thanks for reply - you have both been very busy

No Im not 100% sure on the death of John Richard Riches in 1819 at CORPUSTY - but that is what I came up with searching by computer

Are there any graves that could be looked at on the RICHES that may give more information?

Local history in that area?

Census for that area - Saxthorpe and Corpusty which may give you some other related information? on John and Ann RICHES children etc hoping to link back to them etc

You might be able to look at the deaths in 1819 and if they have his age listed then its possible to work back . As you know there are so many John Richard RIches and Richard RIches it gets very complicated when trying to track them.

Do you think chasing up Richard RICHES (son of John and Ann ) born 1789 and dying 1882 that he may have some more information on him that could lead you somewhere? He lived for 99 years so he could me a good lead to try and get more info on as he was around for a few census periods etc
. I think the link to him is the informant Thomas AUSTIN (grandson) . ie To prove that that link is our and not another link to another RIchard RICHES.

Census in 1851 RIchard RICHES - 58y widower living with granddaughter Frances RICHES - 9y old

RIchard RICHES alive in 1871 census (listed as father in law) - think he was living with Frances AUSTIN (wife aged 39y) and Watts AUSTIN (husband 39y) at that time

RIchard RICHES was alive in the 1881 Census also -  Dwelling - Barlane;
living as a lodger 98 year old -Occupation ag labourer - with William RUGG (80y); Mary Ann RUGG (76y ) and next door in

Back Street - Census Place: Hackford
was a Frances AUSTIN (wife 39y) Thomas AUSTIN 39y head occupation Butcher.

Also in 1881 - Census Place Corpusty
Edward RICHES (ie Richard RICHES 6th child) was living on a dwelling Near Common and next door was his son also Edward RICHES and their respective families

NOt 100% on all of this - just quickly looked up my book.

I found a lot of information on the CORPUSTY & SAXTHORPE History web pages and links - they were working on the Corpustry Marriages, Baptisims and Burials from 1730 - 1812 a few years ago when I looked. Maybe they have it transcribed now. or they have some history for that area.

It seems like most of the family stayed around the corpusty / Wooddalling Hackford area etc it may be possible to track some of the other brothers to see if they stayed around that area or who they worked for etc.

Thomas - child (9) of John RICHES and Ann
Had him marrying Sarah BULLOCK. Listed in 1851 census along with some of other siblings etc

I have a friend in Aust who is a wiz on the family history - will get her to look into it tomorrow and see if she came come up with any ideas of where it look etc for more information .

Hope you find something
thanks for all your info also
dianne weber

Hi Dianne

Didn't get your first message but at least we have now made a connection. Thanks for writing to me.
I have today been to Norwich again to the records office. I am pleased to say your info on John and Ann Riches and their children is sound. We do have the 9 children but don't have Thomas. My wife and I were both searching different things and we can't remember if we found him or not !!( or just didn't write anything down ) But we have noted the following baptisms as per the records-

Children of John Riches and Ann ??? (no luck with surname)
William, bapt july 4 1775 Saxthorpe
John, bapt sept 29 1776 Saxthorpe
James, bapt Dec 28 1777 Saxthorpe
Edward, (Edmund in parish register) bapt 19 mar 1780 Wood Dalling
Ann & Hannah, (twins in parish register) bapt 30 jun 1782 Wood Dalling
Carolina, bapt 21 sep 1783 Wood Dalling
Robert, bapt 6 mar 1785 Wood Dalling
Richard, bapt 22 feb 1789 Wood Dalling
If there is a Thomas, he would be no. 10 !!! (may have to check this out at some stage to be sure)

Edward Riches and Mary Chapman had 5 children - (married 31 july 1810 Saxthorpe) They are -

Elizabeth, bapt 19 may 1811 Saxthorpe
Mary Ann, bapt 15 aug 1813 Saxthorpe
Thomas, bapt 25 feb 1816 Saxthorpe
Sarah, bapt 17 may 1818 Corpusty
James, bapt 31 dec 1826 Corpusty

We tried searching surrounding parishes for a marriage certificate for John and Ann Riches 1770's with no luck. Don't know where they were married or where they came from. We even wondered if Ann might be a Mary Ann ?? Any help here would be great. The John Riches and Ann Reynolds marriage at st. Stephens Norwich in 1774 seems to be no connection.

Are you sure of (our) John Riches death at Corpusty in 1819 ?? I did find this but there a several John's over a period of years and they all just say "John Riches" and nothing else. I wish they had put a bit more info down.

Even tried looking for wills of John and son Edward with no luck. It appears wills were expensive back then and mainly the wealthier had them. Our guys were farm labourers !!!

so, until I find a lead for John and Ann Riches, I am at a bit of a stand still in going back along the Riches line.

Sorry about Thomas Riches. I need to look for him again.

Keep in touch

Andrew Riches

Hi Andrew
I sent you a post but it seems to have not gone thr will send this as a test. Have some information on Riches you are looking at
I have John RICHES born 1742 marrying about 1776 , dying 1819 Corpusty. Married Ann Her dying 1846.
Edmund being 4th child. Him marrying Mary CHAPMAN ( I have them as having 4 children so far. Mary Ann; Thomas; Sarah and James. At a quick glance in my book.

I do not have certificate for this - most of my information coming from Corpusty and Saxthorpe - census etc and baptisims etc

I did get a Certificate sent from England for a RIchard RICHES (9th child child of John RICHES and Ann. I think. I think he was christened in 1789, a widower by 1851? ; in 1871 Census living with Frances (aged 39), Watts Austin (husband - butcher) and son 8y Watts Austin .
Certificate has him (99y rs old) dying 1882 Hackford - THomas Austin - grandson being present at his death. Death being registered 9th August 1882. Certificate Registration District - Aylsham; Subdistrict Eynsford County of Norfolk.

Of the 9 siblings of John and Ann -
I had William RICHES ; christened 1775 Saxthorpe - later Married Elizabeth DAVERSON
James RICHES born about 1778 later marrying Mary SENDALL
Thomas RICHES christened 25/3/1787 at Wooddalling. marrying later on to Sarah BULLOCK

Just had a quick look in my book. i have not been doing much lately. Hope this can help you. Would be interested in making contact again and keep an eye on the posts etc

Dianne Weber

Hi dianne

I too am searching the same Riches as you. Although I am following Edward ( baptised Edmund Riches 1780 Wood Dalling ) son of John and Ann. I am in the UK for a while from Australia and have been to the Norfolk records office and found some info but get stuck going back to John Riches and Ann ??. Can't find anything on them at this stage. I will visit the records office again and look up William,James and Thomas as I don't have them as yet. I did find baptisms for the rest of the 9 siblings - Edmund ( Edward )bapt 19 mar 1780, Ann + Hannah( twins ? )30 jun 1782, Carolina bapt 21 sep 1783, Robert bapt 6 mar 1785, and Richard bapt 22 feb 1789. All Wood Dalling. All from John and Ann Riches.
I have found a marriage of a John Riches and Ann Reynolds at St.Stephens Norwich 14 jan 1774 but can't say that they are the same couple at this stage.

Andrew Riches

Don't think I can help because my connection to Riches was a female link - Cathering Riches, who married Joseph Cassing 1844. Although strangely they moved to Brentford in London so if we keep looking we may come up with something. Perhaps Charlotte Riches was related to Catherine. Please let me know if you do find a connection to Catherine.

Ann's death 1846.
Their children being: William, John, James, Edmund,Hannah,Caroline, Robert, Thomas and Richard(Richard being the one that married Francis Scottow/n

I also found a Francis Scottow (widower) who dies in 1798 at Aylsham aged 96 years . Do you know much about her.
I would like to find more info on the SCOTTOW and RICHES
Is there anything I can help you with?

thank you

My Riches do come from England. I have not done any searching in English census web sites though. There may still be a common ancestor.
