Just to help put your mind at ease - Robert Marsden's father is definitely Peter. A friend confirmed this for me at the RO but also there are other legal documents (wills, probate, property etc.) that confirm this.
From these documents I also know that RMR's siblings are:
Thomas b~1743. He is on the 1841 census for Newburgh aged 98!
William b~1750
Ellen
James b~1737 Ormskirk
Jane b~1745
I haven't been able to find their baptisms for sure which is a shame.

Hi, the father of Robert Marsden Rigby b. 1756 is Peter Rigby.
Have you seen the actual copy of the register or are you using LANOPC? Lanopc has the father as John, but if you do the search it comes up with Peter...all very confusing!

In order to satisfy my curiosity I have visited the LRO and checked the register on microfiche/microfilm(can't remember off hand which it was now) but I am satisfied that Robert Marsden Rigby's father is a Peter. I can see where the mistake is easily made- at first glance it looks like a John but looking closer and comparing other names and letters on the same page it looks like Peter.
All down to individual perception I guess and the only way is to have a look for yourself if you are near enough to/able to get to the LRO?

I have been doing a bit more on Robert Marsden Rigby of Newburgh (1756) and I have found a baptism record transcript for him at St.Peter & St.Paul Ormskirk on 27 May 1756. This gives his parents as JOHN & Mary. I can't find any siblings except for possibly Martha on 3 Apr 1750.

There is a John Rigby in the records for St.Peter & St.Paul, and if this is the same one he was born in about May 1729, the son of Josiah. John's mother seems to have died the following year, but the burial record does not give her name.

Robert Marsden Rigby married Margaret Bourn at St.Wilfrid's Ribchester on 29 Dec 1783 but she died in Dec 1792. She was buried on 23 Dec at St.Wilfrid's. I can't find any children of this union in the St.Wilfrid's transcripts.

Robert married Elizabeth Grayson (née Tomlinson) in 1798. Possibly at Kirkham St.Michael, but the registers for this period are not online.
I forgot to mention that a few years back I visited New Castle with another "cousin" who is directly descended from Seth III. We went to Savannah Cemetery and found his grave. It is a rather nice stone monument in a well kept cemetery. He was a veteran of the Civil War by the way. Thomas, his brother (and my great great grandfather) is buried at Normal Glen just down the road.....as is my great grandmother Margaret, wife of Thomas's son Clark Rigby. Clark moved to Ohio after Margaret died and is buried in Ohio. Normal Glen was a very sorry place with weeds, trash and broken stones. I left depressed to say the least.

I will have to go through my records tomorrow to see where Alfred comes in. I don't remember that name BUT I do recall a FRED........which could be the same. I will tell you that it's easy to get mixed up with all of the Seth's. The "original" Seth from Leeds had a son Seth who in turn had two sons - one Seth (I call him Seth III) and Thomas. Seth III was succesful, etc. whereas Thomas, not so much (of course Thomas is where I come from!) I will get to my papers tomorrow or the next day and let you know. My e-mail address is: pef43@aol.com It would probably be easier to communicate directly through e-mail than through Ancestry..........it's up to you. I can not find my connection yet to Seth other than info from family members. In Alfred Rigby (my G grandfathers) obit, it states that he was from the pioneer family. Seth II is buried in Savannah Methodist Cem. When weather clears, I am going to see if I can find his grave site. I am a work in progress. Thank you for repling. Audreene

Believe it or not I thought about you earlier this week when I was going through some papers re: Rigby and had to stop and re-read all of the correspondence between myself and your Mom. The letters made me smile. I have met up with some cousins in my direct line and discovered a lot of new info but nothing "going back" - one of these days we'll corral old Seth from Leeds, eh? Maybe this new connection will have something. Take care - glad to know you're still into researching this nutty family! Patt

Sorry I can't help. My research has concentrated on the younger brother Rev Rigbye Rigbye that inherited the Harrock estates. My research shows that their father, John, was Rector of North Meols and succeeded to the Harrock estates in 1787, was granted armorial bearings on the 15th of September, 1787, whilst he was the rector of North Meols. He also took the name and Arms of Rigbye by Royal licence.

At John's death, in 1793, he left his Cheshire estates to his eldest son Thomas and the Harrock estate to his third son, the Rev. Rigbye Baldwin who then became the Rev. Rigbye Rigbye.

Thomas seems to disappear sometime in the 1790, and I can't find anything until his death inn Prescot in 1804

I am seeking information about my 3rd Great Grandmother Ellen Rigby wife of Isaac Rigby of Birkenhead. According to 2nd Great Grandfather Walter’s marriage certificate her maiden name was Warburton. However, there is no marriage recorded for Isaac Rigby to Ellen Warburton, there is a marriage for Isaac to Ellen Barrow in 1826 at St Elphin Church Warrington. I have a baptism for Ellen Warburton dau of James & Elizabeth at St Elphin in May 1802. Do any other researchers or members of the family know which the correct Ellen is?
Thanks in advance, Peter.
Thanks for the link :)
Unfortunately it seems that Peter didn't leave a will or it didn't survive.

Peter's father, James, married Ann Marsden in West Derby in July 1700. I assume this is the marriage you mention?

If it's any help the property documents also mention:
Nov. 1700-Rev. Thomas Marsden of Walton (Ann's father) and Rev. Robert Marsden Fellow of Jesus College
Feb. 1737-John Marsden Gentleman of Chester
Apr. 1739-Thomas Marsden son and heir apparent of John Marsden

I've also come across this:
1661, July 13, Thomas Marsden, Parish of Clitheroe, Lancs, Gentleman, & Dorothy Radcliffe of the same parish. Bondsman: Thomas Marsden M.A. Revds.Robert Marsden, clerk, Minister of Clitheroe, & William Moore, Minister of Whalley, Lancs
and this (baptisms):
1666, 6 May, Mary d. Thoms Marsden vicar de Walton
1668, 14 July, Robert son of Mr Thomas Marsden vicar of Walton, born ye 2d
1670, 22 May, Elizabeth d. Thomas Marsden vicar de Walton b. 11 May 1670
and this (burials):
1720, 28 Apr, Revrnd. Thomas Marsden vicar of Walton
1675, 6 August, Elizabeth wife of Mr Thomas Marsden

You've probably already got all this - but you never know! I haven't gone any further with the Marsdens as I'm concentrating on the Rigbys.

It would seem that hand-loom weaving was an important trade in Ribchester in the early 18C. http://www.ribchesterhistory.org/hand_loom_weaving.html

A jersey comber would comb out the wool prior to someone spinning it into yarn for the looms, I think.

If he inherited enough money or land to turn him from a tradesman to a yeoman farmer you would expect there to be a will or soemthing, but perhaps it did not survive.

These Rigbys are not on my direct line but one of them married a Marsden and I have Marsdens on both sides of my family, so I started to dig deeper.

Alston/Aughton is an interesting thought .... the Ormskirk baptism shows his parents abode as Lathom which ties in well to everything else I've found .... so maybe Alston remains a puzzle!

The Indenture describes him as a yeoman. This seems quite a leap from a 'jersey comber' but it's ten years on so maybe he did well for himself, inherited money etc. I'm not exactly sure what a 'jersey comber' is - I think it's part of the wool processing before it's spun into yarn. Was Ribchester a sheep/wool centre in Lancashire?

Are these Rigbys a main line of research for you? It's my direct family line and become something of an obsession!
