Re: Stephen and Pearl Rigg of Mt. Sterling, ILL

The Stephen Austin Rigg (d. 21 Jan 1926) of Brown County, Illinois who married Ellen Perry was the 5th of 11 children of Joseph Rigg (15 Oct 1824 - 04 Apr 1892) and Elizabeth Ingraham (d. 1915). Joseph Rigg was originally from Greenup County, Kentucky but married in Brown County, Illinois on 10 Jan 1847.

Joseph was the 7th of 9 children of Zachariah Rigg and Catherine Powell (07 Aug 1791 - 22 Oct 1842). After Catherine's death Zachariah married Mary Tucker 23 Oct 1843 in Pike County, Illinois. She was previously married to Gentry McGee and had a daughter Brunetta McGee.

Zachariah was born in Stokes County, North Carolina, the 8th of 8 children of Thomas Rigg(s) and Sarah ____. Thomas was born in Charles County, Maryland about 1745 and died in Stokes County, North Carolina in 1796. Sarah was the widow of Alexander Hannah and also had 6 Hannah children. I do not know her maiden name. I've seen 3 or 4 names offered in speculation.

The Thomas Rigg(s) who died in Stokes County, North Carolina in 1796 was the 3rd of 8 children of Thomas Rigg who died in 1761 in Charles County, Maryland. Thomas (d. 1761) was married twice. The 2nd time to Mary Peel Bowie. She was the mother of the youngest child and then married William Parsons and had 4 Parsons children. She married a 3rd time to a Bussell. The first wife of Thomas Rigg (d. 1761) is less certain. My best guess is that she was Frances Bruce, daughter of John Bruce and Judith Townley. Frances was the right age, went to the same church, is known to have been alive and is not known to have married anyone else. Thomas had business dealings with her parents and two of her brothers. It would also explain the Townley name used in the descendents of 6 of Thomas Rigg's children. I can account for all of Judith Townley's other children.

Thomas Rigg (d. 1761) was the (only?) child of Susannah Posey (b. 01 Jun 1691, Charles County, Maryland) who later married Cleborn Lomax and after his death married John McNeal. It seems very likely that the father of Thomas Rgg ((d. 1761) was the John Rigg who died in 1711 leaving a young widow, Susannah and that this was the same widow Sussanah (Posey) Rigg who married Cleborn Lomax. Susannah was still living when deposed 20 Aug 1753 in Charles County, Maryland regarding the boundaries of Walker's Run which was previously wned by Cleborn Lomax. Thomas Rigg (d. 1761) was deposed at the same time.

Prior to that is more speculative. There was a Thomas Rigg who died about 1740 in Charles County, Maryland who (my speculation) may have been a brother of John (d.1711). There was a Thomas Rigg who was in Charles County in the 1670s (mentioned in 2 wills, witnessed another, patented land, etc.) He d, 1768 leaving a very much younger widow, Contantine. It is (my speculation) possible that John was a son of Thomas and Constantine or grandson of Thomas and an earlier marriage or unrelated.

The IGI suggests that Thomas Rigg (d. 1688) was the son of John Riggs and Mary Hopgood of Southampton, England. While they did have a son Thomas, b. 1636, they also had a son, Francis who died in Calvert County, Maryland in 1664. If the Thomas Rigg who d. 1688 was his brother, in my opinion it seems likely that he would have claimed the estate, which was instead claimed by a cousin. (Relationships documented in court records.) So, I take the IGI with a grain of salt on that.

Regarding other Rigg families in Brown County, Illinois, there was a Richard Watson Rigg (1789-1869, not your ancestor) who was born in Virginia and died in Brown County, Illinois. He was of Peter Rigg. Who moved from Virginia to the Frankfort, Kentucky vicinity before 1811. This might (pure speculation) have been the same Peter Rigg who bought land in Henry County, Virginia about a year after Thomas Rigg (d. 1796) and his brother Charles bought land there. The tax records are consistent with that, but do not show the relationships. If it is the same Peter Rigg it seems likely that he also came from Charles County, Maryland. He was not a brother of Thomas Rigg (d. 1796) or a first cousin. DNA testing suggests he was closely related. There was a Peter Rigg in Charles County, Maryland who sold the tract of land originally pateneted by Thomas Rigg (d. 1688). What is really needed is more of a paper trail.

There is also a village called Rigg on the Isle of Skye in scotland.
Re: Rigg Village

My name is Charlotte Rigg Nugent and I visited the "Rigg" village in Scotland in 2006. i was interested in it because I had a copy of a picture of the village in some genealogical material I copied from Etta Rigg Smith, a long-time Rigg researcher in Mt. Carmel, Illinois whom I had visited in the mid-nineties.
i had located Terry Harper, a Rigg descendent, though the Melrose Family Newsletter when I first got involved in genealogy and tracking the Rigg Family. Terry, a life-long genealogist, iives in Edwards County, illinois, not far from Mt. Carmel. My Rigg family homesteaded near Mt. Carmel in 1817/18. Terry took me to visit Etta at that time and she let me copy a sheet she had which had various items on it, one of which was a picture of the "Rigg Village" in Scotland. The picture was captioned "Rigg Ancestral Village in Scotland".
i know that my Aunt Charlotte had visited the village in the 80;s and I was hoping to find something in my Grandpa Rigg's genealogical file that would identify some information about the village and whether he was under the impression that this village was connected to "our" Rigg Family. I was unable to locate anything useful along this line. I did find a letter that my Aunt Charlotte had written to my sister in the 70's talking about visiting the Lake District in Lancs, England. She noted the "Ray Rigg Road" and since my father's name was "Ray Rigg" this caused her much excitement.
I visited this same road in Windemere and Bowness in the Lake District in 2006 and I have also researched the origins of the word "Rigg". The origin usually given for "rigg" is the word is "ridge". In my grandfather's notes,he relates the story about "Robert Rigg", in antiquity. The man named "Robert", lived on a "ridge" or "rigg". This "Robert", becomes "Robert Rigg", when surnames were adopted in England.(1300's)
My research indicates that the use of "rig" or "rigg" to mean "ridge' is generally true in southern England. In the south, the name "Rigg" or "Ridge" is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word describing a geographical feature (ridge).
in the north, the same word's root is from "old Norse". In the north "rigg" still means 'ridge", but the meaning is slightly different. it is thought to derive, not from the geological feature, but from the "ridge" of earth" made by the earth at the turning of the plow. This word is thought to have arisen as a surname along with other surnames which arose from descriptions of land in the manorial system from feudal times. Other surnames of this sort were "Lynch", "Acre", Half-Acre" and so forth...
All of the above is by way of describing why my Aunt Charlotte might have seen "Ray Rigg" road in the Lake District. Not only is the "Rigg" name (no "s")
extremely prevalant in this part of England and into Scotland where we find the Rigg Village, but the name also appears to a mean a "country lane" or a kind of "alley" or "rural road". My aunt found a sign that said "End Rigg" and was puzzled what that meant. I think it just designated the "end" of this "country lane".
At any rate, i visited the Rigg Village which is now not more that a cross roads just over the border of Scotland. At one time it was more of a true village but modern times and highways have reduced it to it's present state. Plenty of Rigg names in the phone books. I talked to a woman in a cottage who had known lots of Riggs in her life. Whether the village takes it's name from a family or something else was not discovered by me at this time. I also still don't know if my family has any connection to this part of the world. My "cousin" David L. Rigg has a web site devoted to my branch of Rigg's and though his research is splendid, he seems to think we might hail from the south and a "Riggs" (note the "s") family there. My own family was adamant that we were Rigg WITHOUT the "s" thank you very much! Dave thinks this controversy ("s" or "no s") is irrelevant. To tell you the truth, I'm more confused than ever on all these issues and David's DNA results don't seem to clear it up either. So...go figure.
Anyway, it is a charming village and beautiful part of the world and well worth a visit for any reason, ancestors not withstanding.

Does anyone have any information about Rigg Village in Scotland? Not much available through a Google search. I'm tracing the Rigg line, which goes back to James Rigg (b. 1660, Scotland, d. unknown, MD, US) whose descendants then largely lived in (West) Virginia.

I have some old family photos that include one of "Rigg Village, Carlisle, Scotland" that looks like it was originally a postcard, and another of "Mansfield Hall, Rigg, Scotland." I'll post those soon.

I'm interested in any information about the Rigg line as it relates to Rigg Village, and any information about Rigg Village itself.

Ah the, Rigg's of Jamaica!! Henry Rigg is my great great grandfather.....small world. He and his brother came to Jamaica and one settled in the parish of St Mary and the other (don't know his name)settled in Western Jamaica, possibly in the parish of Hanover. The western lot somehow ended up with an s on the end of their names so there are Rigg and Riggs (same family) floating around in Jamaica. Rumor has it that one of the off-springs of the western Riggs migrated to California. Henry amassed great wealth and his grandsons - all seven of them - blew it all.

This information if from FHL#1004994 - Burials @ Uwchlan MM from Cadwalader Jones acct. Book - Clement Rigg to dig his wife's grave 13 Sep 1769.

According to family records Rachel was Rachel Owens

There is also John Rigg who in 1742 in Uwchlan witnessed the wills of Charles Gatlive and David Jenkins (from Chester County wills on ancestry). This John is too young to be a son of Clement, so possibly a son of Robert or a brother or Robert Rigg, father of Clement ??

I don't have any records on a Joseph Wm born to ?Isabella. What information do you have on this birth. I would be interested to find out more. It could be the child of Isabella and John's daughter Isabella prior to her marriage in 1874 later ?
I have communicated with another lady in America who has a birth of an Isabella McTaggart in Twynholm at the same time as ours. The question is was our Isabella actually born in Jamaica ? She definitely returned to wed.

I have lots of certificates etc. - it has cost me a small fortune over the years and I am willing to get them to you if you would like and I could try and send the photocopies I have of the photographs. You can contact me direct on patpitts@iinet.net.au and I could send some scans through to you.

Pat Australia

Pat

I found your detailed Rigg family tree very interesting. From a list of births I note also a Joseph Wm born in 1867 to Isabella Rigg at Wallen in 1867, father not named. I assume the mother is Isabella McTaggart Rigg. Do you have any informaion about Joseph Wm?
I have not yet tried to research the parentage of Isabella Mctaggart but offer a couple of observations which may provide a clue. I note that the second wife of her father in law James Rigg was a McTaggart. I note also that Isabella is buried with her sister Grace (Spence) in the Melbourne General Cemetery. I have not tried to get a death certificate for Grace or investigated further.
Are there any photographs of John Rigg or his family or of Bank Vale?

Graeme

Re: Lane Posey Rigg b 1789 Va to Mo 1832

Did you ever have any luck in tracing the parentage of Lane Posey Rigg?

I've been able to find documentation of his move within Virginia before moving to Montgomery County, MO about 1830, but have not been able to pin down anything about his parents. I have encountered some family members who are beginning to question whether the name "Remlitz" is accurate, or is one of those names that has been altered as it was passed down from generation to generation.

Would appreciate hearing whatever you have learned in the past three years about these questions.

Bill Fox, Scottsburg, IN

Abner Clark Rigg of Brown County, Illinois was the son of William Travis Rigg and Purlina Clark.
William Travis Rigg was the son of Richard Watson Rigg and Elizabeth George.
Richard Watson Rigg was the son of Peter Rigg.
At least four of Peter's children were born in Virginia (John, Richard Watson, Elizabeth and David. I am not sure of Constantine's birthplace). Peter was in Franklin Co., KY for the 1810 & 1820 census. He was in Shelby Co., KY for the 1830 census. An inventory of his estate was conducted Jan 1831 in Shelby Co., KY.

John RIGG, 1768-1832

Barbara,
The information I have on John and his wife, Margaret Bruce is from the research of Duncan and Eve Adamson that was commissioned by Mr. Rich. Gilman. TO WIT: John was buried at Troqueer Parish, monument #320 and his dau. Isobel, 1806, monument #321, (infant dau. of John) who died in Gibbonhill, [North Yorkshire, England]. While at Dumfries Family History Center, I tried to get a copy of the monument inscriptions at Troqueer and they were out of stock. I have seen many references of the Riggs in England and would not doubt that John was born in Yorkshire. Sorry, wish I could be more help. John
