I couldn't go to bed until I looked for it, and I found it!

It may not mean much to you, as there isn't much there. But it seemed like if someone kept it for a very long time (as it appeared very old) then it must have meant something to her! I just couldn't bear to throw it away.

Could you give me your mailing address and I will send it tomorrow.

Bonnie

I'm sorry, I didn't understand!

I actually didn't buy it. I was helping at a charity tag sale where there were a lot of things donated and it was impossible to tell where individual items came from. When it was over, everything left was thrown away or given to the Salvation Army. I just couldn't bear to discard something that obviously had meant enough to someone for them to keep it in a tiny little hand-made balsa wood box.

This happened in Burleson, Texas, near Fort Worth.

Leo, interestingly enough, the LDS site lists one child for Edward Riggs and Olive Beach, a Ruth Ann Riggs, born in 1804 in "Salem, Now Augatuck, New Haven, New York" (!) I found out that the northern part of Oxford, which later became part of the town of Naugatuck, was first designated as the Parish of Salem. So possibly the parish records of the Congregational church in Naugatuck might have some leads.
Jim

Jim

Several years ago I did a study on the early Riggs families of Ct. The only one that I had difficulty with was that of Edward Riggs Olive Beech of Woodbridge. The various censuses seem to indicate a daughter born at the time you say Esther was.

Samuel of Orange is also a possibility but not as good a one as Edward,

Leo

I volunteer for the Oxford Historical Society. I've been helping them enter data into a program called Past Perfect. Well, just yesterday I was entering a number of genealogy books which were compiled on the Riggs Family. I do not know if your Esther Riggs is mentioned in the books but I would guess there's a very good chance. I'm not sure whether this information was ever published in a formal genealogy book or not.

At the Oxford Historical Society, the Rigss Genealogy are compiled in 23 large three ring binders. They contain original documents. You could make arrangemnets to visit the Twitchell-Rowland Homestead here in Oxford, Connecticut to have a look. We also are having an opening day on May 5 & 6 this spring.

Re: John Riggs Sr.

A John Riggs appears in Isle of Wight, VA, about 1650; We lose him around 1700. There is much more to the story that I can't tell it all here.

From a deceased researcher: "The Riggs were close to the Bracewells in England which led me to believe they might be near in the states too. John Riggs had extensive holdings in VA and his son John Riggs Jr. did not just vanish. And yes, John as a surname had to be the most popular name ever."

Can you please tell where the John Riggs who was in the Rev. War came from? Of course, there is 2-3 generations between 1700 and the Rev. War.

The reason why I am interested is that my Braswell cousins y-dna test very closely to that of the Edward Riggs family from Morristown, NJ. My connection appears around 1800 in Surry County, NC.

I would like to find out what happened to the John Riggs, grandson of Susannah Burgess Bracewell/Braswell. Susannah, in her Will dated Oct 22, 1714, in the Upper Parish of Isle of Wight County, VA, " I GIVE to my Grandson John Riggs One Shilling." The Will was admitted to probate on June 26, 1732, in Isle of Wight, VA. Will Book, Vol. 3, pg 304-305, 2716-1734.

Two of the witnesses to the Will were Richard R. Jordan and William Allen. Both of these names appear later in Surry County, NC. It is believed that a John Braswell connected with the Susannah Burgess Bracewell/Braswell family made his way from Isle of Wight through NC to Surry County, NC, arriving about 1780 and disappearing about 1785(probably died). My ancestor, Boardvine Braswell b. 1799 NC, was married in Surry County, NC, in 1820, and its his descendants, my Braswell second cousins, who y-dna test very close to the Edward Riggs family from Morristown, NJ.

I am trying to tie in a connection from Isle of Wight, VA, 1700 to Surry County, NC, 1800, apparently through NC.

I would very much like a dialogue with the eastern NC Riggs researchers.

handwritten note--Rosa Riggs

I am not related to the Riggs family, but I came across a very old piece of paper in a "secret" compartment at the bottom of a small inexpensive wooden box. On it was written in very old-fashioned penmanship:
Compliments of Walter (?? hard to read) Smith to Miss Rosa Riggs and would be pleased to go to the sociable with her tonight at Mr. Bonds.

This was at an estate sale, but many items were donated as well, so I have no clue as to its source. The box, which appeared to be homemade out of a balsa-type wood, did not appear to be valuable and did not sell and was going to be discarded. But I hated to throw away such a personal momento, one that evidently was important enough to Rosa Riggs to put away and save. If there is any chance this belongs in your family, I would be happy to mail it to you.

P

Hi Jo!

I just saw your post regarding the Morris family in Hendricks County, Indiana - specifically Nancy (Riggs) Morris and her children with Shadrach Morris. I descend from their eldest son, Wiley Morris, and his wife, Sarah Wilson (daughter of John Wilson). I believe William Morris' wife, Vienna Wilson, was the sister of Sarah (and thus daughter of John). I also saw your postings at findagrave.com - thanks for adding the information and pictures! I finally now know when Nancy (Riggs) Morris died.

I would love to correspond more on the Morris family!
Yes, Nancy Morris - mother of William, Wiley, Gideon, Shadrach (Jr.), Minerva and Nancy - was born a RIGGS and married Shadrach MORRIS (Sr.) in 1804. It seems that he was the son of Gideon MORRIS who founded Morristown, TN. Do you have any information? When did Nancy die?
