Lois,

Yes, I have him and that's where my Rightmyer research starts to run into brickwalls. I cannot find Lewis/Louis anywhere earlier. That's why I was particularly interested in the published Rightmyer family history that's been mentioned on this site.

Don

I found a Lewis Rightmyer in the 1880 census living in Lower Town, Davies, Kentucky. He was born in 1825 in Pennsylvania and was married to a woman named Mathilda born 1831 in Saxony. (later a part of Germany, of course). Their 7 kids were born in Indiana and Kentucky. You can see the 1880 census on Family Search (LDS site) for free- not the original image, just the extracted information. Could this be your Lewis?
Lois

Lois,

OK, that really helps. Thanks. The fathest back I can trace one of my Rightmyer ancestors is a Louis or Lewis Rightmyer and he was married to a woman who was born in Germany. I'll have to get my genealogy notes from home and give you more detailed information.

I appreciate your helpfulness.

Don

Hi, Don,
From your earlier messages, am I correct in thinking that you are looking for Rightmyers in Pennsylvania? The Richtmyer/Rightmyer genealogy only covers the Hudson Valley New York branch, though it does list later descendants who lived in other parts of the country, mostly in the 20th century. (and a chapter on Rightmyers in Wisconsin) Therefore, it is worth the money for those of us whose Rightmyers stayed in New York, but probably not for you. Is there a particular Rightmyer you are looking for? I can check my book and see if he is in it. Lois

Many of the Rightmyers migrated to western NY and PA and to WI THey were descended from two brothers one from the Catskills and Saugerties NY The other group was from Middleburgh and Cherry Valley. They were involved in the Revolution and The Old Fort in Schoharie County.

The book by JH French written in 1860 "Historical and Statistical Gazetteer of NY State" is a great historical reference and tells about the Royal Grant to Urey Rightmyer in the 1700s. The Rightmyer name is spelled many ways and is of German Palatine origin. My sister Lois actually went on a cruise on the Rhine and went to the town that they are from.
At one point there were hundreds of Rightmyers in the 19th century in many states but mostly in NY
One of our distant relatives was from Pa and was on the Wall in DC from Pa.
Good Luck and Keep in touch.
Jessie

I live in central Kentucky, and my Rightmyer ancestors came here generations back by way of Pennsylvania and Indiana and then into Kentucky from what I've been able to determine so far.

I was just checking out the Rightmyer genealogy book on Kinship Press. A bit pricey but I'll probably have to get a copy.

Don

Yes I have had it for more than 5 years. I am in it along with my sister Marjorie . My sister Lois Rightmyer is not in the book as Mr Richter with whom I corresponded did not find her before he published the book. She was born in 1950.
We have traced the family on the Longendyke side and found a lot of information. Basically most Rightmyers are related to us and they are found all over the US.
Where are you? i live in NH, Marjorie in NY and Lois in British Columbia.
Jessie

Try getting a copy of Richtmyer- Rightmyer genealogy, by Lawrence Rickard, published by Kinship. It traces the Rightmyers back to the late 1600s, possibly in the Nieuwied region (near Koblenz) and then to NY in 1724.
Most of the Rightmyers were in Schoharie, Greene and Ulster counties. This book is very well researched and documented.
Also, you should give a look at the LDS site, Family search. It is free. Just be careful about information submitted by members- if it is not extracted from a church record or official record, it might not be accurate.
Lois Rightmyer

There is a book called The Loyalists in Ontario-The Sons and Daughters of Upper Canada, by William D. Reid, printed in 1973, reprinted in 1994. Now out of print. Apparently it contains thousands of references to petitioners for land grants. You might be able to find this book somewhere or order it through an interlibrary loan. I bet you will find information on the Rightmyers there. Worth a try.
Lois Rightmyer

Thanks, Vera. I did get the message. Have you gone to the LDS site, Family search? they have many records from all over the world, for free. Just be careful as to the source of the record- if it is a member submission, not a record extract from a church or census, you should verify the accuracy. You can access the 1881 Canadian Census on Family search. Looks like there are some Rightmyers in Sophiasburg.
Apparently a good source of information is the Land Patent Grant records of Upper Canada- many were granted to Loyalist families from the American colonies.
Lois

Hi Lois: Thanks for taking the time to take over for your sister. I really appreciate it since I am new to ancestry.ca. You asked about my grandfathers and were they born in Canada. Yes - they go back to Henry (or Wm.) B:1798 D:? in Prince Edward Co., Ontario. Most of my relatives are from that area. I will try to get a copy of that book you were talking about. Many thanks. Please keep in touch if you find out anything else. Thanks again. Vera

All my information is from the book which, incidentally, Jessie bought for me. It doesn't cover any Canadian Rightmyers. I myself came to Canada in 1972, so all our Rightmyer connections are NY based. Were the grandfathers you mentioned born in Ontario? You would have to go back a few more generations to pick up a Loyalist from NY. There is probably an organization in Ontario which traces Loyalist families. Good luck!
Lois Rightmyer

There is a book published by Kinship by Lawrence Rickard on the Richtmyer/Rightmyer families of NY. This traces the family back to its arrival in upstate NY around 1724. This should be useful. The author has been very thorough and it is well documented. No guess work here.

Vera,
What was your father's name and how long has your family been in Canada? Some Rightmyers did go to Canada as they sided with the British. Conrad is our common ancestor. The book I wrote to you about would have the information you are seeking and is well worth investing in. Look on line at Kinship.com. Their are a lot of records you can get if you want to join ancestry. Lois did this . When you look at the marriages and births in the family and it was quite large in the 1800's you find how many palatine families intermarried and also married into Dutch families. There are also cemetary listings for ESop, Ny and Hurley where Rightmyers are buried. We were basically in West Camp and also crossed over to East Camp in the Hudson Valley. One branch under Urey settled in Schoharies, NY and had Large parcel of land given to them by the government under Queen Anne. This is recorded in the History of NY State.
I spoke to Lois and she is going to respond to you.
Her son is a graduate student in Kingston and she lives in Vancouver, BC
Jessie

Henry 1760-1752, Jurg Wilhelm Richtmeyer (George Wm.) 1724-1788 born in Germany married and died in Ulster and Conrad R. born 1690-1752. My grandfather was John 1882-1935, my great grandfather was Henry (Anthony?) 1843-1928. We live in Brechin, Ontario, Canada, a small town 1-1/2 hrs. north of Toronto, Ont.
Vera, Do you know which branch of the family you are from?
There were Rightmyers in Ulster, NY and also in Schoharie,NY.
The fort was in Middleburg, NY the Fort was called the Middle Fort and is now a museum.
If you can give me some names ie grandfather and great grandfather I can look it up in the book. If you are related to us you can trace it back to the original palatine Conrad Richtmyer who came over around 1709-13. i have been looking at a sight on Olive tree for palatine information you might want to check it out. Where are you located? i live in NH now but will be going to Germantown, NY in the next few weeks. The Palatines have quite a history and it is documented. I just found the naturalizaiton in 1737 of a george Rightmyer and a Johan Plass, my grandmothers family. If you want to pursue this my sister , lois Rightmyer will be able to assist you. I will send you her email.
Jessie
jessie
Jessie

There is a published geneolgy of the Rightmyers,Richtmyer, Rightmires, Rightmeyers etc with the female line. It is available in bound form. The publlisher is Kinship from Rhinebeck.NY. Lawrence V Richard whose mother was a Righmyer researched and wrote it based on records. It is also available at the Fort in Cherry Valley, Schoharie.
The geneology goes from the first generation in NY through the 9th generaation including those in Wisconsin and the midwest. It was a huge family starting with Conrad from Fahr, Germany .
Jessie Rightmyer Osborne

There are a number of companies that sell coats of arms by name.

Coats of arms properly are granted by a sovereign to an individual and are inherited by his heir. Other descendants use the father's arms with vsrious marks of difference.

I'd like to see either a pictorial copy of the suggested coat of arms or a blazon (heraldic description) and some history.

An alternative is to assume a design. I suggested red and yellow to reflect the Baden origin of the Rightmyers I know of and a yellow cross on red because that is the international code flag for the letter R.

Our family story is that our family came from southwestern Germany. Henrich Rightmyer or Richtmyer came to Philadelphia in 1742 from Rotterdam and said he was born in Woessingen near Durlach, a village north east of Karlsruhe in Baden. He settled in Reading, PA. A brother went to New York and there are many Rightmyers in the Palatine area on both sides of the Hudson below Albany. From those areas Rightmyers have moved all over the US. I'm glad to know of Canadian Rightmyers. I wonder if they were Empire Loyalists? Because the family came from Baden I suggest that any coat of arms we devise include red and gold as found in the arms of that grand duchy. The maratime signal flag for the letter R is a gold cross on red, and I suggest that as a place to begin in designing a shield.
