Dear Gerri: My grandmother was a Rigsby. She was born in Adairville, Ky. Her father was L.Rigsby and her mother was, I believe Serena Carter. I am now working on the history line
through my church(Mormon). My grandmother had a brother named Thomas also, so I'm sure there is a connection. I have to find the marraige records first of L. (Alonzo?)Rigsby and Straney (Serena)Carter in Adairville in 1883. From then I can go back.
It's a tedious process. Please don't give up hope. I will keep you posted when I find anything out. If you do, please
email me at bsuewixom@gmail.com. Thanks.

Howdy Ken

In his Revolutionary pension application, James states he
was born in Sampson Co NC around 1763. However, Sampson Co
was not created until 1784. At the time the area was in
Duplin Co.

This is very interesting, because there was a Rigby family
in Duplin Co early on. Two men from that family moved to
GA and then to AL, and many of their descendants spelled
their name Rigsby. One of these two was William born 1767,
who is of an age to be your James' brother. William's
father was William Rigby born about 1735, and William Sr
appears to be son of a Hugh Rigby.

As I mentioned, there were 5 Rigsby families in Wake Co
for the 1790 census. I believe these are two groups,
probably first- or second-cousins. One group is my James
and John, who was almost certainly his brother. The other
is your James, Frederick, and Archibald. Your James and
Frederick both served in the War, so I think they were
brothers. Archibald appears to be younger than them. I
think he may have been Frederick's son, but it's possible
he was a youngest brother.

There was also a Jesse Rigsby who served. He lived in
neighboring Chatham Co. He is probably another brother of
James and Frederick.

There was also a Thomas Rigsby in Wake Co who died before
1790. He and Frederick are mentioned together in Wake Co
court minutes, so I think they were also brothers. Thomas
was noticeably older, though, so he may instead be the
father of Frederick and the others.

Would you be interested in joining our DNA project? We
have a descendant of the William Rigby of Duplin Co in
the project, and of my James. Their DNA is very close,
but there are several differences. It would be very
interesting to see if your James matches William or my
James.

Regards

Ken

Thenk you, Ken, for your comments on our Rigsby genealogy. I had reached the same conclusion about my William Edward's marriage and father, but had no corroboration except for some guy named Patterson, with no sources listed. The William "Edward" is family lore, but of course, not substantiated by any documentation - I had an uncle James Edward, allegedly named for William Edward. I found a number of death corroborations for the year about 1869, but they may have looked at the same sources as I did.
Now, do we have any idea where James came from? I once visited the NC Genealogy Museum in Raleigh, and this is as far as I got then, too. I laughingly recall the head docent there advising me that if I couldn't find complete links, "I didn't exist". I told her that I did exist.
Much obliged, Ken Rigsbee
Howdy Ken

Your William Rigsby married Martha in 1814 in Wake Co.
Census records for 1810 for Wake Co are missing, but they
exist for 1800 and 1790.

There were 5 Rigsby families in Wake Co at the time. On
the 1790 census, only two of the families have a son under
16: my James who married Susannah Wright, and the other
James who married Rebecca Moore. I know all the sons of my
James, and there was no William. Your William must be son
of James and Rebecca.

Wake Co tax lists for 1812 and 1815 show William and James
in Lick Creek district. The other Rigsbys are in other
districts. This also indicates William was son of James.

Here is your William in my database:

http://hindskw.com/KennethHinds/378.html

Let me know if I don't have your line.

Where did you get the middle name Edward for him? I have
never seen him as anything but William.

Do you know for sure he died in 1869? All I know is that
it was between 1860 and 1870.

Ken

My name is Herbert Kenneth Rigsbee, Jr., I go by Ken Rigsbee. I can track my family up to my great-great grandfather, William Edward Rigsbee, B abt 1788, Wake Co. D 1869, Rutherford, TN, married to Martha King. One tree (Patterson) says his father is James Rigsby, Wake Co., NC. Doubt that, but can go no further.

Can anybody help me on this?
Thank you,

Ken Rigsbee

May I step in here and ask a couple of questions regarding the Rigsby surname? It's probably another in a long line of unanswered questions but I must ask.

Were any of your Rigsbys ever in or around GA, especially Lumpkin, Stewart Co GA in the early 1800's? I've been seeking my GG grandmother, Mariah Rigsby Goulding, for several years and have had no success. For years we never knew her given name but a recently discovered death certificate of a daughter gave her mother's maiden name as Mariah Rigsby. We don't even know or sure if Mariah was her first or middle name. It has been suggested that her name might possibly have been Maria or Marie.

Mariah was born ca 1817 in GA according to census records. Her parents/siblings are unknown. Mariah married my GG gfather, Thomas Goulding, ca 1839 in GA. The Goulding surname was spelled several different ways over the years; as Goulden/Golden/Golding. At some point in the late 1800's it seems to have been changed to Goulding and that is the way we spell it today. Then again, it just could be that it was always spelled Goulding and the various census takers just couldn't get the spelling right.

This family was on Stewart Co GA census records until 1880 when the Widow Mariah and some of her children moved to Freestone Co TX. Think Thomas died between 1870-1880 in GA. Mariah died in Freestone County TX sometime after 1880.

I've never been able to find any Rigsbys who were in or around Stewart Co GA. I'm sure Mariah's parents had probably come to GA in the late 1700's-early 1800's from some other U.S. location but have no idea as to where.

Just wondering if you might have any Rigsby ancestor that might fit into this picture.

Thanks,
Paula

Howdy again

Those last two problems have been bothering me, and I
think I have the answer. Why was Oldham's widow living
with Revel instead of her son, and where is Mary on the
1850 census, since she died in 1856?

The simple solution is that Margaret is really Russell's
widow, not Oldham's. I was rejecting that because I had
Oldham's wife as Sarah Margaret Clark and Russell's as
Mary Sullivan, and I knew Sarah died at age 56.

I got to looking at the records, and Sarah could have been
56 before 1850. She was 40-50 on the 1840 census. If she
was at the upper end of the range, it would work. I had
her birth year as 1796, but that's only from the 1850
census. I also noticed that all the records have her as
just Sarah. The only place I've seen her as Sarah Margaret
is a tree on RootsWeb.

If we take the women as Sarah Clark born about 1791 and
Mary Margaret Sullivan born about 1796, everything makes
much more sense. Mary is on the 1850 census, as she should
be, but under her middle name. Sarah did not live with a
nephew in preference to a son. Mary continued to live with
Revel after they returned from Hamilton Co. Sarah was 19
and married on the 1810 census, instead of 15. (Not that a
15-year-old wife is impossible.) Sarah had her eighth
child at age 36, instead of 31.

This is such a clean solution that I feel it must be
right. I think both families are straightened out now.

Ken

Re: Revel Rigsby - b. 1822

Howdy Andrea

I think you have given me the clue that solves the entire
mystery. You mention an 1856 death date for a Mary Rigsby
in the bible. Does it specifically say this is Eunice's
mother? If so, I can conclusively say that she was a
daughter of Russell. Revel is still a question, but I am
almost certain he was also from Russell.

Actually, even if it doesn't say she was Eunice's mother,
I think it's enough of a clue. I have gotten some more
information on the Union Co Rigsbys since my last message,
and it has caused me to question whether Eunice and Revel
belong with Oldham. The name Mary makes everything fit
together nicely.

For one thing, I now know that Russell's wife was Mary
Sullivan. I am sure she is the widow in Hamilton Co IN
on the 1840 census with a son 15-20. I had been assuming
she and the son both died in Hamilton Co before 1850, but
if she is Eunice's mother she must have returned to Union
Co, and the son must be Revel.

The other new information is a biography of the John
Rigsby you mention. It answers several of the points you
bring up.

It states that John's father died in Guilford Co just
before John was born, and that his mother then moved to
Union Co in 1827. She came there at the suggestion of her
brother, William Clark, and lived with him. John later
bought William's farm. This is the source of the family
lore you mention, which seems to have mixed up the people
a little.

It also names John's brothers as George and Edmund. George
married Esther or Hester Kingery. They are the G and H who
were parents of the young Sarah E you found in the
cemetery. By the way, thanks for posting about Sarah E. I
had found a transcription of Keiffer cemetery online, but
it did not include Sarah E for some reason. I'm happy to
have that record for my collection. Also, you said there
was no Hester in the area, but she is listed with George
on the 1850 census. The name you read as Cinderella is
actually his sister Drucilla.

As for the Mary who died in 1860, I'm sure she was the
second wife of John. The bio says he was married only
twice, to Lavisa and Isabel, but his wife is listed as
Mary on the 1860 census. The bio says he married Isabel 6
years after his first wife died. But I have a marriage
record for John and Isabel in 1865, and Lavisa's grave (in
Witt cemetery in Union Co) gives her death as 1852. The
Mary who died in 1860 was age 25, 7 months, 27 days, which
agrees with the Mary on the 1860 census.

Most important, the bio says that John's mother Sarah
Margaret had 8 children. I had 9 for her, counting Revel.
Given that it specifically names two brothers, and I know
Sarah had 5 daughters, I have to conclude that Revel
doesn't belong in this family.

I also have a copy of Eunice's obituary, which has more
details that add up. As you mention, it says she came to
Union Co about 1829 with her parents, which conflicts with
her being John's sister. Even better, it says she had one
brother who pre-deceased her. Sarah's sons George and
Edmund both died before 1897, as did Revel, so Eunice
can't be Sarah's daughter.

Putting all that together, I think it's clear that Eunice
and Revel were children of Russell Rigsby and Mary
Sullivan. I'm going to change my database accordingly.

There are only two small problems left: On the 1850 census
Sarah Margaret, widow of Oldham, is living with Revel. I
don't know why she'd be living with a nephew when one of
her sons was also in the county. But trying to put Revel
in her family leads to too many inconsistencies, so I'm
going to accept that that's what happened.

Also, I am unable to find Russell's widow Mary anywhere on
the 1850 census, but it seems she must have been alive. I
might guess she re-married, but it appears she died a
Rigsby. It's also tempting to say that she must be the
woman living with Revel, but the census clearly says
Margaret, and John's bio says Margaret died at age 56, so
she should have been alive in 1850. This one I don't have
an answer for.

Thanks for the info about Mary. That was the deciding
factor.

Ken

Dear Ken,
Thank you for your response. The information on Oldham if correct, cracks a 50 year mystery. I have a copy of the Alexander Smith Bible with dates of marriage, birth and death for the Smith family including Eunice Rigsby Smith. I would be happy to forward a copy on a private email. I have a large file left by my father. Most of the work was done in the 1960's. My Dad pursued Russell and John Rigsby as the parent of Eunice. Eunice was born in Guildford Co. N.C. according to her obituary. Eunice emigrated from Guilford Co. N.C. to Union Co. Indiana in 1829 with her parents (of course, no names and it does say parents plural so both must have been alive). As she is the only Rigsby surname in the bible and due to the date and physical proximity, I assume the Mary who lived with Revel is Eunice's mother. Could Sarah Margaret translate as Mary? I am puzzled that the 1850 census states Revel's and Eunice's Mother's name as Margaret age 54.
The only gravemarker that I have found for Mary Rigsby is in the Keiffer Cemetary with Revel. Her death date (1860) is different than the Mary Rigsby death date in the family bible (March 29th,1856). All of Eunice's immediate family (husband, 3 daughters,1 son, 1 grandson) are buried together in a different cemetery. The Keiffer gravestone does not give a birthdate and states she was the wife of John. I also have an obituary of a John Rigsby who lived in Union Co. Indiana .
I don't believe that Eunice Rigsby Smith and John Rigsby are directly related. . John (he, Mother, Father all born in So.Carolina 1880 census) and Revel (he and his father born in N.C,, mother born in S.C. 1880 census/,changes to all born in N.C. in the 1900 census) both married woman with the last name Prichard or Pritchard (Sarah and Lavisa). John then went on to marry Mary Foster in 1857. It does not state when she died (possibly she is the Mary of the Kieffer graveyard- no way to know without a birthdate). Their son Johnnie died at the age of two, which, if a illness took both Mother and child, might add up to 1860 .
By the way, family lore is that William Rigsby and a Sarah were the children of Revel O. and Sarah Pritchard. Sarah followed William to another town after Revel's death. Mary, Revel, Sarah and William are all buried at Kieffer cemetery. There is one other Rigsby in that cemetery a Sarah E. daughter of G & H. Sarah was born in 1855, William 1850. So it is possible that they are brother/sister/cousin. What throws me is the G&H.There is a notation that George and Hester were the parents. There is no Hester living in this area, only Cinderellla and George Rigsby (possibly siblings?) and she is only 15 years old in 1860 which means she would have had a baby at age 11.

Thank you for your work on the Rigsby, it is remarkable.
Andrea Hastings

I know this post is older but I have some information on Bettie Jane Rigsbay. Her parents were Andrew J Rigsbay and Sarah Carter. Andrew is buried in Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park, in the area where indigent people are buried. Sarah is buried somewhere around Cleburne in Johnson County, Texas. Betty Jane and James Monroe are also buried in Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park. My children are descended through James and Betty's daughter Meddie (Meadie). If you have more information, I will be happy to exchange what I have.

You will have to register with a Username & Password at ancestry.com but you should be able to see the trees without a paid subscription.

On the Home Page, in the box that says "search for ancestors", type in Elijah Yates. On the next page, click on the tab that says "Family Trees", then click on "Ancestry World Tree Entries for Elijah Yates." Scroll to the bottom of the page and where his name shows up in a family tree form, in the window that says "Spouse", type in only the name "Mildred". That should show you the results.

Hi Ken

What about Sin Francis Rigsby her aunt, younger sister to her mother? Sin Francis Rigsby's nephew did the family geneology and has her and his (2nd cousin) as both Sin and he did apprently know them. Sin is an old biblical name meaning bush, it is uncommon but would be found in religious families. Sin as in the original sin is an english name where as most Bibilical names are Hebrew in orgian therefore it would be very easy to confuse the two.

Sin = "thorn" or "clay" a town in eastern Egypt the tract of wilderness between Elim and Sinai. As you can see it would be an unusually name but not impossible.

The other problem would be that most of the census staff would most likely think that they had heard the name Lyn not sin and Lyn was not common of a name in the 1800's.

Alison

Howdy Aly

I got the Lynn spelling from the 1870 census entry for
Willim Bish. The entry is difficult to read, and now that
you suggest it I can see that the first letter may indeed
be an "S" instead of an "L". The second letter is
definitely a "y", though, so "Lynn" seemed to me to be what
it says. All her other census entries show her just as
Frances, so I haven't had anything to compare against.

"Sin" would be a pretty strange name, and unlikely for any
family that was even vaguely religious. I wonder if it was
really "Cyn", short for "Cynthia"?

Ken
Question: After looking at my mothers first person family information from living relatives I have a question regarding both Rigsby & Bish families. You have the name of Lynn Francis Rigsby and Lynn Francis Bish in the geneology list for their families, now their living relatives have them as Sin Francis (this is from first hand infromation not via a website, confermation from their siblings etc). Could you please let me know where you found them as Lynn Francis's with the exact dates of birth as the Sin Francis's? Or was it that you thought that it was a miss spelling of the Lynn. Would you mind clarifing this information as it is very important for their research.
Thanks Aly

You seem to be missing my husband's whole family. He is Bradley Omar Rigsby, Jr. Father is Sr. (of course). His father is Oris Rigsby who married Freda MacMurray. It goes on back from there through Sarah Belle Rainwater.
Thanks,
Anne Mead-Rigsby

In order for someone to help you with information, it's important to give details of the person or family you're seeking. You didn't explain if Philo is male or female. Is Philo short for Phillip or Phillipa? What year was he/she born? Where did he/she live? Is Dee his/her middle name? Is Dee "his" mother's maiden name or "her" maiden name? I did a general search to try to establish a starting point. Is this the family you're seeking?

Source Citation: Year: 1870
Census Place: Township 7, Butler, Alabama
Roll M593_5; Page: 328B
Name: Philo Rigsby
Birth Year: abt 1841
Age in 1870: 29
Birthplace: Alabama
Home in 1870: Township 7, Butler, Alabama
Race: White
Gender: Male
Enumerated: June 28, 1870

Philo Rigsby, 29, Farmer, value of real estate: $300, value of personal estate: $150, b.
Re: Revel Rigsby - b. 1822
Howdy

First, I am fairly sure your Eunice was a daughter of Oldham Rigsby
and Sarah Margaret Clark. I know Eunice married in Union Co IN in
1839. On the 1830 census for Union Co there are 4 Rigsby families,
and unfortunately three of them have a daughter Eunice's age. William
moved to Fayette Co before 1839, so he is probably out. Russell I
don't know much about. He was a brother of Oldham, and had several
daughters, but I haven't found any record of their names. He is not
in Union Co on the 1840 census, or anywhere. A Mary Rigsby who pretty
much has to be his widow is in Hamilton Co, but she has no daughters.
I don't know if his daughters married before or after she left the
county. Oldham is supposed to have had a daughter Sarah in 1817.
Given that Eunice S is living next to Oldham's widow on the 1850
census, I have been assuming she was Oldham's daughter. I can't rule
out Russell, but Oldham is more likely.

Also in Union Co on the 1840 census is a Josiah Rigby, who is listed
as Rigsby on the 1850 census. He was a recent immigrant, arriving
from England between 1830 and 1837. I think he was really a Rigby,
but if your family history says Eunice was English I would say he has
to be her father.

Here is Oldham in my database:

http://hindskw.com/KennethHinds/18349.html

Note: I just noticed I have a mistake in my notes for Oldham. He
was in Guilford Co for the 1820 census, not Chatham Co.

Second, I'm afraid I don't know where the name Revel came from. There
was actually another Revel Rigsby, born 1843, who was a second cousin
of the one born 1822. If it was a family name it would have to come
from at least four generations back. That's not impossible, but isn't
too likely.

There was a Revel Coleburn in Chatham Co NC on the 1820 census. He
is on the same page as Luke Rigsby, grandfather of your Revel. I
don't know of the Coleburn family being associated with the Rigsbys.
Perhaps Revel Coleburn was a friend of the family, or an influential
person in the community. Your Revel could be named for him, and the
younger Revel for yours.

Can I ask where you got the exact date for Eunice's birth?

Ken

Revel Rigsby - b. 1822

Trying to find the orgin of the family name of Revel that has gone down through generations. MyGGGrandmother was Eunice S Rigsby, born in Guilford County North Carolina on March 9, 1817. Her younger brother was Revel Rigsby born approx. Dec. 12, 1822 (taken from a fuzzy photo of his tombstone in Union Co. Indiana). In the 1850 census, Eunice was a widow with several young daughters. Living next to their household in Indiana was Revel (28yrs old), Sarah (25yrs old) and Margaret (54 yrs old-born in South Carolina). I am assuming that Margaret was the mother of Eunice and Revel. If anyone has these names in their family tree, could you contact me.
Andrea
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

What Bobbi has posted is incorrect.

She asked me in an email if I knew about Drury's parents.
I told her my only vague clue is that there was an Edward Rigsby in Prince William Co in the 1700s. (Prince William Co is next to Fauquier Co, where Drury was born.)
I did not say that Edward was Drury's father. I don't know when Edward was born, so I don't even know if he's the right age to be Drury's father. He could be a brother or uncle or not closely related at all.

To repeat: There is absolutely no evidence Drury's father was Edward.

Ken
I
think his brother is John R. that had sons
named Paris and Audie. Do you know of these
names?
Shannon
