Hello, I just came across your feed and perhaps you could help me out. My maiden name is Riley, I was born in Montreal, now reside in Ontario. My father an only child was born in Montreal Ronald George Riley (April 26, 1949) of Fredrick George Riley (April 12, 1926?) & Eunice (Biggs) Riley. Fred was the only son of John James Riley & Ellen (Brown) Riley. I know that Fred was born on London, Ontario then the family moved back to Montreal where John & Ellen met. John was in WWII. We know nothing of John or his family history but that he was Catholic buried at Mount Royal with a military plot.

He married a black gal named Sallie and their son was the first mixed marriage kids to go to West Point. The pictures of Col. Thomas and Sallie show them to be a handsome couple. He went on to become the president of a bank back there, a bank that is still running to this day.

Have you run into a family with a Thomas born about 1803 whose father was also Thomas? Being from that part of the South they may also have had slaves before moving to Kentucky in the mid 1830s.

Hi Pam,

Here is some more info on your Grandparents. I have a copy of a marriage license dated 29 Sept 1906 in Fort Smith, Sebastian Co, Arkansas for Charles Riles (age 22) and Media Pennington (age 18), both from Spiro, Choctow Nation, Indian Territory (OK).

Note that Media appears to be a familiar nickname shortened from Almedia.

I sent a copy of the license to your hotmail email address.

Also, the 1930 Federal census for Machire Township, Haskell Co, OK, lists the Charles Riley Family as:
Charles (age 53) This age should be 46.
Almedia (42) This age looks OK
Gertrude (18)
Carl (10)
Mildred (8)
Jimmie (6)
Tony (4)

Based upon these two and other sources, I think our Grandmothers first name was Almedia .... but I'm not 100% positive about this yet!!

BTW, I've sent 3 emails to your Hotmail email address with no reply?

My grandmother was Wilda Marie Riley born somewhere around 1916. I just recently found out her dad's name was James O. riley and wife Nora. She had three sisters according to 1930's census. Della,Luceille, and Martine. I am trying to find out any information for my mom. Because her mom Wilda died in childbirth on August 10, 1954 and my mom was only nine.

Her parents were Phinnia Courtney and Robert Killaby from Ontario. Do you have any further information on these families? It would be greatly appreciated. Heidi

My Riley/Reilley family was in North Central Arkansas by the 1880's or maybe before. They came and went and then moved up to Oregon Co., MO...just north into Missouri. I traveled to Fulton Co., Arkansas a few years ago to hunt for that family line and ran into a Riley family that seems unrelated to mine, but still is in the Fulton, Izard county area. They told me that they have a family reunion in Eastern Oklahoma every year. There is a very active rootsweb list in both Fulton Co and Izard co. Maybe they could help you find something on your family that was from Arkansas. Good luck.

Just an update for you .... I've been browsing the 1900 Federal Census and found that Charles (age 16) was living and working in the Bonoshe area and Almelia (age 20) was living with her family in the Spiro town area which is about 15 miles from Bonoshe. Charles and Almelia married in 1906. Charles said he was born in AR but did not know where his father and mother were born.

I still need to find where they were married and when they moved to Stigler.

If you are interested, I will keep you posted if I find new info.

BTW, is there any info about Charles and Almelia on your fathers birth certificate?
Hi. I am searching for my 2nd great grandfather. We believe his name was Jesse Riley born 1851. According to a page from an old family Bible, he may have had a brother named Henry Riley born December 1872. Jesse went on to have two children that we know of by Lila Jean Lyles (sometimes seen as Lily 1849-1925. The children were Christopher Columbus (Lum) Riley 1876-1961 and Robert Samuel Riley 1879-1958. We know that according to the 1880 census Lila Jean was living as a widow in SC with her two young sons in the home of her parents James Lyles and Mary Adams Lyles. We believe Lila Jean and my great grandfather Christopher and his brother Robert were born in the Lancaster area of SC. Please contact me if you have any information. Thanks bunches!!!

Jenny, I am interested in knowing whether you are still active, and whether you have gained any more information about the Riley family. I am researching Peter and John Riley, relative to their land reservations in Jackson County under the 1821 Treaty of Chicago. I am one of the writers of a historic series that appears weekly in the Jackson Citizen Patriot newspaper. The land transaction involving Peter Riley and John R. Williams, filed with the county in 1842, but begun years earlier, is the first land transaction of record in Jackson County. If you have any reply, send it to me directly at kenjgigi@comcast.net. Same for anyone else with information on this fascinating family.

I am a retired newspaper writer, who still does mostly historic articles for the Jackson Citizen Patriot in Michigan. I am currently working on Jackson County's very first land sale, which involved as seller Peter Riley, who along with brother John was given a reserve of 640 acres at the point of where the Grand River is joined by its tributary the Portage River just north of the city of Jackson, in Blackman Township. Most of this property is now part of the vast acreage belonging to the Michigan Department of Corrections. The Riley brothers' names appear in the 1921 Chicago Treaty, as follows: "For the use of John Riley, the son of Menawcumegoqua, a Chippewa woman, six hundred and forty acres of land, beginning at the head of the first marsh above the mouth of the Saginaw river, on the east side thereof. For the use of Peter Riley, the son of Menawcumegoqua, a Chippewa woman, six hundred and forty acres of land, beginning above and adjoining the apple trees on the west side of the Saginaw river, and running up the same for quantity. For the use of James Riley, the son of Menawcumegoqua, a Chippewa woman, six hundred and forty acres, beginning on the east side of the Saginaw river, nearly opposite to Campeauâs trading house, and running up the river for quantity." I would be very interested in any particulars about the mother, the father (said to be a trader) and the sons. Can anyone provide any more detail. Apparently the brothers received reserves in at least two treaties - the 1819 Saginaw Treaty and the 1821 Chicago Treaty. They must have been something special ... Her Father was Thomas Peter Riley and Mother was Gertie Mae Roof-Riley. I'm not sure where either of my great grandparents were born but they were buried in oklahoma -probably Stephens County. Any information would be helpful.

I read your message and at first thought it was one I posted myself. Sounds like you have hit the same roadblock that I have. Keep me in mind, and I will do likewise, if you ever find anything on either Arlis or Julia.
