DELINA RIOUX (1916-1990), LEWISTON MAINE

In my research of the Rioux family, I found a headstone at St Peter's & Paul's Cemetery in Lewiston Maine with the following names listed: Arthur Rioux (1890-1949), Celanire Gauthier (1887-1974), Alice Rioux (1915-2003), Eloi Laliberte (1914-1999), Alice Drouin (1923-1987), Delina Rioux (1916-1990). I have attached a copy of the photo of the headstone located at Section 1, lot # 1184 in the cemetery.

I can match everyone listed to my family tree, however, I have no idea who Delina Rioux is. I did find some funeral information online for her from the Lewiston Sun-Journal newspaper, but no obituary to give me any idea of how she was related. Not sure if she was a wife of someone or a child. She doesn't show up in any census that I can find. Any help identifying who she is would be greatfully apreciated!

Thank you!

His son was Etienne Rioux b 11/30/1726, his son was Jean Baptiste Rioux b.1/13/1754. Jean married Madeline Cote'. Their son was Etienne Rioux b 3/20/1788 and he married Ursule Cote'. Their son was Francoise Rioux, b.10/1/1826 married to Elinore Dumont. Their son was Isadore Rioux b 6/14/1857, married to Celine Boucher. Their daughter, Elise Rioux was my grandmother, who married Jean Baptiste Rioux. They both died in the Norwich area of CT. Helpful I hope!-KG

Be cautious on the trace of the name RIOUX TO France. I am a RIOUX and have been documenting my history for the past 30 years.

Get a hold of the Canadian History on RIOUX, there are two volumes documenting the lineage. The "Canadian" lineage traces back to a Jacques Keroc'hiou. No relation to the France "Riou(x)" of the 1500's. There are many theories as to the name changes, the most common being mispronounciation and illiteracy on the part of the ancestors. From Keroc'hiou the name shortened to Roc'hiou.

The original spelling in Canada was RIOU and it is thought that the addition of the "X" to "Rioux" was the result of illiteracy during a census. The name being spelled RIOU with the subject thus putting an "X" beside the name. This change is found with Jean-Baptiste RIOUX (b:13 JAN 1754) his father being Etienne RIOU (B:30 NOV 1726).

Without going too much into the history, there is one of the siblings from this family that went back to France and initiated a RIOU(X)line there, even though there was a RIOU(X)line already in France, but unrelated.

Also be aware there are two Coat of Arms. One of the more commonly found on the Internet at the "House of Names" is not the one for the "Canadian Rioux".

Ray

I am unsure of Peter Rioux's father's name, but it was within his lineage that some Rioux's did come to Michigan. After a short time that particular family packed up their fishing business and moved to the East coast. After some years there, one of the daughters wanted to come back to Michigan, and as it were in the times, she was not allowed to move alone and so Peter and one other brother relocated back to Michigan with her. At some point in all this, they felt since they were now American, they changed the spelling of Rioux to the American version Reou. To date, we are the only Rioux's that spell the last name this way. Peter wound up in Essexville Michigan where his family still to this day, most of us Reou's live.
It is sketchy at best knowing where we came from as, again, we are the only ones with this spelling. I will try to get more info, some specifics, so you can trace us Reou's into your trees.
Thomas A. Reou

Yes the Rioux's are all related. The first to come from France. Jean Riou formely named Rochiou formely named Keroc'hiou, came to Canada about 1672 to Saint Francois, L'Isle d'Orleans. In 1696 he became the 'Seigneur' of Trois Pistoles.

A few years ago I bought a set of books from Trois Pistoles giving all ancesters on the Rioux family.........

Hi Nancy,
My in-laws had a Rioux family Reunion in Derry, N.H. in 1988. The children of Emanuel & Sophronie (Landry) Rioux, of which there were 9 living children originally. Relatives came from Canada, and as far away as the west coast of the USA for this reunion which was planned for one year. It turned our to be the hottest day of the year. A great time was had by all, and lots of photos and video done that day. JAR

That's where the Rioux's of North America originated - and there is a 2 volume book on the family (en Francais). Going by memory I understand Nicholas Rioux in Antigonish, NS was given a Seigneury of Isle D'Orlean, but switched lands with Nicholas Deny (a fisherman) for Trois Pistoles. My Rioux's hale from Petit Rocher,NB (Bathhurst area) but all Rioux families in North America are of the same line. Let's organize a Rioux reunion area/time at the next Acadian Reunion.
