Thank you for your quick reply. Yes, I wish that our ancestors had left a few more "clues" so that they'd be easier to locate.

An old family Bible says that John and Mary were born in the "highlands" so that's as close as I can get in Scotland for now.

The Ritchie's and Shannon's have been quite elusive - thanks again for your response and please keep me in mind should you discover anything that would relate.

Cheers,
Terry Ballantine

Hi Terry ...The Scottish folk who supposedly left during the clearings must not have considered their future clan members interest in family history!
Our beginnings are on Canadian entry .. Archibald McIntyre and brother John arrived here in 1832 .. age was about 19ish .. lived in Quebec for 2 years. Moved to Ontario, purchased land in 1841, and married Mary Ritchie Feb.03, 1842. This is the first info re Mary found thus far ..no departure info can be found re either from Scotland, but discovered 120 Archibald McIntyre's born about the same time and registered at a gathering!
An interesting note .. on land transfer and purchase documents, Archibald had lovely handwriting .. Mary signed with an "X"
Do reply if a connect can be made ..

The original poster of this message has numerous posts on various surname boards about family books.

You'll notice they never post responses on the board to queries.

This appears to be a "veiled" commercial ad, they're selling family books. I would beware of contacting them directly.

There is no such thing as one family book for a particular surname.

I suggest starting a new thread with your query. This might increase the chances of getting a response to your particular search.

I am looking for a Charley Ritchie that I believe was born in Ohio around 1889. He was in Kansas in 1912 and 1913. He married at that time and had a son, Orville. He divorced his wife shortly after the child was born and in 1937 when the son died, he disowned his parenthood of the child and maybe moved to California.
Would you have any info on this Ritchie?
Thank you
Thomas Enoch Rithchie (born in MD) was a Scottish Presbyterian and fell in love with Margaret Mary Kelleher an Irish Catholic who was adopted in infancy (believe she was born a Sullivan). Both families disowned Thomas and Margaret. They were married and lived in Coatesville, Chester County, PA in 1902. Thomas kept in touch with a brother...Joseph who I am told, lived in Ohio. My mother, Marianne and I are looking for my grandfather's family..who we believe to be in Ohio. Those that disowned, are believed to have originated in Maryland and were believed to be farmers. Would love to connect with lost family...Thomas and Margaret had 15 children (12 who lived to adulthood)...We are not sure other Ritchies even know we exist. If you might be our "Ritchie" my email is SJUIrishGirl33@aol.com
We are absolutely related!!! I am Lawrence Edward Ritchie's granddaughter...Thomas' middle name is Enoch...and he was married in Coatesville in 1902 to Margaret. I live very close to where they lived and died, and know where they are buried. My mother and I visit regularly. My mother, Marianne Ritchie had lunch with your brother Thomas last year, and asked for you and Larry. As much as I know so far about Thomas is already listed under my family tree...still doing research.
Thank you! This is a collateral line for me (or rather, for my husband), but I try to follow those as well as direct lines, because you never know which descendants might have information!
I appreciate the correction on Susan Banks Ritchie's death date, and on the husband and family of Margaret Ritchie. Some years ago I visited Petersburg with my husband and mother-in-law, for a Smith family reunion, and we went to the Blandford cemetery, but I didn't see those headstones.
Do you have the inscription from Robert Ritchie's headstone, too?
The memorial stone for the Ritchie family in the kirkyard in Stevenston, Ayrshire, is wonderful, listing several generations (going back to James Ritchie and Susan Niven). Too bad that tradition didn't continue here in America!
Again, thank you!
Margaret Lindsey Smith, mlsmith67@q.com

Re: Ritchies in Virginia

My name is Eleanor Harwelll Thomsen and I am a great great granddaughter of Susan and Robert Ritchie. The following is some of the information that I have.

Susan's parents, Thomas and Margaret Banks, came to Virginia in 1820 from Scotland. This is on Thomas' headstone in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. He was born in 1784 and died in 1853. Susan's headstone, also in Blandford Cemetery, reads as follows: Susan Ritchie Banks, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Banks, wife of Robert Ritchie II, born in Dinwiddie County, March 13, 1822, died March 31, 1899. (Please note that she did not died in 1870.)
Susan and Robert's children were William B., Margaret Banks, and Robert. Margaret married Thomas Jefferson Harwell; their son, Samuel Banks Harwell was father of my father, Robert.

According to the US Census, Susan is listed for 1859, 1860, and 1880 but not 1870. Robert is listed in 1870 but not in 1880. I have not been successful in finding out when he died but I assume it was between 1870 and 1880.

I grew up in Petersburg, VA, just outside of Dinwiddie Co. but now live in Sandwich IL. Please contact me if you want any further information.

While this is a long shot, would you have any record of a Mary Ritchie who married a Jamie (Mc)Shannon; daughter was Mary (Mc)Shannon (1770-1860) who married John Ballantine (1761-1833)?
Thanks for checking -

Cheers,
Terry

to Andy Ritchie

Only 11 years or so late, but I only just saw your message about Edwin ("Ted") Gladstone Ritchie, my grandfather. Darroch Duncan was his brother and my great-uncle. The last surviving child of Ted's marriage to Agnes Milner was my mother Joan, who died recently.

Would like to get in touch if you ever see this mail.
William George Ritchie of Ontario and Saskatchewan, Canada; Hamtramck, MI; Detroit, MI

I'm searching for information on my GG-Grandmother's fourth husband, William George Ritchie. I believe he was born around 1893 in Ontario, Canada. His family lived for some time in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. William married my GG-grandmother, Matilda Duncombe nee Olsen, abt 1928. They lived in Hamtramck, MI. The State of Michigan doesn't have a marriage record for them in 1927 or 1928, but they are listed as living together with the last name of Ritchie in Hamtramck in the Detroit Area Directory of 1928/1929. I am looking into whether they may have married in Toledo, OH. If anyone has any information that you think will help, I'd love to connect.

Seemed like he had a daughter steering the boat named Martha also a son named Charlie with his company.May not be the same family. What an adventure that Capt. John took me on,I still tell the stories of the upper ohio and the warrior.Jeff Graves

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this information. My family lives in Frostburg maryland, and my great Grandfather is Earl William Ritchie (from midlothian Maryland) his father is John William Ritchie. I checked the birth dates and date of death and they all match up. Unfortunately my great grandfather passed when my mom was five years old so she didn't know very much about his family, so this information that you passed on is very helpful. Thank you again-autumn Ritchie
I'm attaching the record as it appears. I suggest you google the county Gaston, North Carolina Vital Records and see what the site says about obtaining vital records, the county clerk is the go to for the these. They also might be held on a state level. I'm not an expert in NC records, every US state has it's own method, but info of how to obtain a record can usually be found on the State or County government website.

I searched around for both a Harry and Margaret in the Public records db's on ACOM in North Carolina, there are several for each. I did see an obit for a Harry D Ritchie in Gastonia, Gaston, NC. He had been remarried, no mention of his previous wife, this could be the same one as the one divorced. He was born in North Carolina, according to the obit, so not yours, but could be the one that divorced.

If they immigrated to the US, they would have probably been naturalized, they couldn't stay indefinitely without going though that process. I didn't see any index record for a Harry Ritchie in NC or any nearby State being naturalized.

My Uncle was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia about 1932 last seen when he left age 21 to travel europe! Margaret Himmler I think was born in Australia arrived in UK according to shipping records. All leads in the UK have gone cold, I have come across a divorce of Harry Ritchie and Margaret Ritchie,in Gaston, North Carolina.
Julie,

The Royalton Ritchie are not a branch of the Bear Creek Ritchie, and vis-verse. Perhaps the reunion poster, KennethLindsaySchaub, will post more details about the origins of this Ritchie renuion line.

My intention isn't to spoil reunion fun. I hope sharing my discoveries helps other Ritchie researchers sort out their lineage. A shared surname doesn't necessarily mean there's shared lineage.

In regard to William Ritchie (b 1844) and Lillian Neice (b 1845):

I discovered that William Ritchie was born and baptized as Guillaume Richer, in Montreal. His name was Anglicized as William Ritchie. I've trace his lineage back 9 generations to France. Lillian Neice was baptized as Marie Eulalie Joly in Montreal. Her family Anglicized their surname Joly as Nice. Her ancestry traces back to France as well. Fun fact, I found Lillian descended from the same Richer line as her husband.

William Ritchie was the only member of his family to immigrate to the US. He had 13 brothers and sisters, they all remained in Canada, as did his parents.

I have mounted a mini-tree on rootsweb.com to show the ancestry of William Ritchie. It also has a list of William and Lillian's children. You can find it by going to the World Connect Project page, and entering the database name "wiscandeu",(without the quote marks) in the *jump to a specific database* bar.
