Hi Isabelle,

My name is David Riva and my family is from the Detroit area. I'm not entirely sure about my full lineage, but I believe my great-great grandparents were from the Bologna area of Italy. Bologna is in the north, only 2 hours away from Milan, so there's a possibility they're related. However, I think my great-great grandparents came through Ellis Island in New York and settled in the Detroit area shortly thereafter. My aunt knows more about all of this and if you'd like, I can get you in contact with her. She'd love to talk about it.

Just beginning my search, and have very little info, but my greatgrandfather was Giovanni Riva (b1881?) married to Lena Galnara Riva. Two boys, Carlo and Armando. Migrated 30 Dec 1919 to NJ. I will be travling to Italy to conduct more research in August '09. If you have any connections to this I would appreciate your help.

My gran and her kids, one of which is my dad lived in Liphook most their lives. All of course have moved on, I thnk one or two still live around the Liphook area.

My Grandad was in the Royal Navy and settled in Liphook after the war and married June my granmother, sadly grandad died when i was young 1980 i think.

But i'll ask my gran for more information and if you are a long family member our family often have Riva get together's

I am looking for the descendants of James Herbert Swift, born 1872 in Quebec, and Jane Marnoni Chalmers Riva, born 1875, Montreal, Quebec. They married in All Saints Anglican Church 12 June 1895 in Montreal.

Their children were: Cecil Eric, Jane, Dorothy, Alexander, another son, Robert and Marion. I believe at least one of the children may have moved to Alberta.

Jane Marnoni Chalmers Riva was the daughter of Peter Riva and Susan Young. I am researching the Young side of the family.

You and I are following in each other's footsteps in our research. Robert Young Riva's mother was your George Henry Young's aunt, Susan Young. Susan, originally from Aberdeen, married Peter Riva, originally from Glasgow, in Montreal 27 Sept 1866.

James R.L. Riva was Peter Riva's brother. Both James and Peter are buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal. James and his wife, Elsie, had many children, most of whom died in infancy.

Hi,
I'm currently searching the Drouin records through Ancestry and came across an entry in the Knox Pres. records for 1879 on folio #14 for the burial of a Helena? Mearns Webster, infant daughter of James R.L. Riva & his wife Elsie Jane Cowan Webster. She died 31 July & was buried 2 August 1879 age 10 months 12 days.
Witnesses to the record were James R.L. Riva & PETER RIVA.

Don't know if this will help but I've found following collatoral family lines useful at times.

They had at least three children: Robert Arthur, Susan Fyvie (or Fyvia) and Doris E. Robert Arthur was born in Portland, ME and died in New Hampshire in 1976.

HELP NEEDED WITH Jessie Riva,
Her parents were Paul Riva and Margaret Lyon, who married in Edinburgh on 11th November 1806. I have been able to track down seven children, although unfortunately no dates of birth:
Alexander
Peter
Maria
Elizabeth
Ann

I have been unable to trace any other family by the name of Riva living in the whole of Scotland at the same time. This doesn't mean no other family existed, just that there is no record of them in the Parish Records)

Jessie married Joseph Tinnis - a Figure Maker - on 7th October 1832 in Edinburgh.

Her brother Joseph was born around 1813 and was a Mariner. He was a 46-year old bachelor when he married Elizabeth Dryden in 1859 in Edinburgh.

You are from the Original Clan of Gacicia's that I am from.
I believe your tie is from Filippo and I am from Pietro. I believe they were brothers OR there is another Filippo that is a son of Pietro. The father of Filippo and Pietro was Giovanni. I would love to hear about what you have. I have been doing a lot of research. I was able to connect a Tony Massaro to Pietro and he paid a research person, I have a copy of the report.
Tony is from Illinoise, and we know we are distant cousins.

I know about some of the Riva's who are from Charleroi, Washington County,Pennsylvnia.

I am a decendant of Frank Riva, who was the son of Giovanni (John Riva) Riva and Caroline(a) Ronongi. He was born 02/08/1871, Delebio, Zaltellino, Providence of Lombardy, Italy. He had three other brohters that I know about at this time Vincenzo (Vincente), Celeste, and Sebastian. There might be another brother named John as well.(?) I am still doing research on this family group.

Frank was also known as "Francesco" Riva in Italy. He was married to Josephine Brusa,she was the daughter of Angelo Brusa and Matilda Zavattari.

As far as I can tell, at this time his father Giovanni Riva was married at least three times. His first was Caroline Rognoni, who died around 1837, she was the daughter of Ambrose Rognoni.

His second wife died around 1902 or 1903.

He may have remarried again possibly after 1903. He lived in Delebio, Zaltellino, Providence of Lombardy, Italy He had a store there. His eldest son Vincente took it over after his father death. Between 1903 and before WWII.

During WWII, the Germans ransacked the Store and took everything and raped Vincente's daughter Maria Riva. She never recovered from the event...she was still living in 1969.

Just joined this message board with a view to researching my family history. I was born in Salford (nr Manchester, UK) as was my father, Cecil and his brothers Leonard, Hugh, Herbert and sister Alma. Their parents were Leonard and Ada but that's as far as it goes.

Like me, my father never moved away from the Salford area whereas Hugh, a long serving Royal Navy seaman settled in Liphook, Hants after WWII. Herbert moved to Macclesfield during the '60's and Leonard to the Staffordshire area sometime in the '70's. Alma has lived in Cardiff for many years.

Any info would be greatfully received to help me get started on what seems to be quiet a undertaking.

Oberlander and Dietrich in Germany

My grandmother's maiden name was Oberlander and she always said she was either a 2nd or 3rd cousin to Marlena Dietrich. Does anyone have a tree showing Marlena and her family in both directions? I have traced the Oberlander name back to George Andrew Oberlander born 1830 in Selbitz, Oberfranken, Bavaria. He immigrated to the US in August of 1866. George Andrew Oberlander had a total of 3 wives (1 in Germany) and a total of 10 children.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information regarding Antonio Riva who went to China and married Catherine Lum. They had at least one son named Marino. Supposedly Antonio was killed in China. His wife moved and lived in Genoa, Italy in the 1950's. Thanks for any information. We are related.

Marlene's daughter Maria Sieber married into the Riva family. Maria Riva is the only child of Marlene Dietrich and Rudolf Sieber. Maria married William Riva on 4 July 1947. They have 4 children.

I am also looking for Riva's in northern Italy. My husbands great grandmother was Dominica Katarina Riva born 16 Oct 1876. I have conflicting information about her parents. One source lists them as Antonio Riva (cattleman) & Domenico Bianco, and the other is J. Dominic & Mary Blasant Riva. Dominica Katarina (Minnie) had a brother and no sisters. She married Francesco Barberis and this family lived in a coal mining area called Gilchrist, Fulton County, Illinois. Does any of this ring a bell?
