Rivett Confusion, There are two Thomas Rivett's my one was born in Adelaide 1 March,1852 to George Rivett & Charlotte Elizabeth Bevis M 1847. They had 5 children Mary Ann 1848 Robert George,1849 George David,1854 Thomas 1852 B Hurtle Vale, Elizabeth Hannah 1856 Daisy Hill Victoria. The first three all born Adelaide. Robert 1812 George B 1814 Parents Robert B 1796 & Elizabeth Thurlow 1796-1844 Married Kenninghall 1811. Robert & George came to Aust 1838 guarding convicts on the Augusta Jessie. Robert 1812 is the father of the Robert born @ sea as they were on their way home to Chatham. My Thomas is a puzzel I know he was still alive 1928 as I have the obituary saying he didn't attend his brother Robert's Funeral. I can't find him on the electrol roll. I can follow the other two Thomas's on the electrol roll. Thomas Srn 1852? that came to Australia on the Oregon, I have the BC of his son Thomas 1879 and it says father AGE 27 born Kenninghall Norfolk. If you google Norfolk Baptism Project you can find a lot of records. There is a Thomas there Baptised 1850. More info contact joy.williams@iinet.net.au

Regards Joy GG Grand daughter of George

It would make him age 76 if he died in 1959.
There are other branches of the tree though so if you could give me your mothers name it could help, only asking as my great grandmothers name was Alice Rivett,(Darley)and she had 17 children.
cheers
Kathy

In regards to Mary Elizabeth Archer we haven't been able to find anything much about her as yet. It appears she might have been a "bondswoman" before her marriage to Thomas, as there doesnt seem to be any records of her birth just a note saying born in NSW
I'm still looking into though!
something else for you to know, George Rivett was in the Military and was a escort to the convict ships to Australia.Thomas wasn't actually born on land in Australia but at sea in the Port of Adelaide, all the Rivetts settled firstly in South Australia then ventured to NSW and Victoria.

My husband is a great grandson of Zephaniah through their son Oswald (Os). Zephaniah's parents were Thomas Rivett and Louisa Self, Thomas' parents were Thomas Rivett and Rhoda Neobard - one of Zephaniah's middle names was Neverd, as is my husband's and it comes from Rhoda. I think it has been established that Thomas and William were not related closely, although they must have been somewhat distantly - they just happened to be on the same ship, probably sent here from the same workhouse and appeared together because of their names being alphabetised - of Thomas and Rhoda's 9 children, there were no "William"s. Although the Thomas who came here was from Norfolk, his father Thomas and Rhoda were born and married in Eye, Suffolk. Which of Zeph's children did you come through (we have photographs of him, do you?) - when I just told my husband about you, he was very interested; you are more than welcome to contact us off-line for more information and photographs if you want - it's: irivett1@bigpond.com - my husband's name is Ian Neverd Rivett and he was born at Avenue Range, South Australia - near the homestead established by Zephaniah and Mary Ann Searle.

Very interesting. I was totally unaware of the marriage of Phoebe Windward and William Rivett at Bressingham. As near as I can find, William Rivett was born at Kenninghall, Norfolk - a place rich in Rivetts. The 1941 census shows William and Phoebe in Lackford. William is shown as not being from Suffolk while Phoebe shows being from Suffolk. Their children, Eliza, Emily and John are listed in birth order and age nearly exactly as given on the Oregon passenger list. The other Rivett children on that list are from William's brother, John, who is listed separately for some reason. Phoebe was baptized at Lackford in Jan 1811 which would have put her age 40 in 1851 - certainly within the range of error expected in those days. Windwood misspellings also being common. The most compelling bit of evidence, in my view, for the Phoebe Rivett on the Oregon being the daughter of Robert and Ann Windwood of Lackford is the names/dates of their children.

Phoebe Windwood is my 3rd Great aunt. I've been working on the Winwood line for many years and would be happy to share. Your post about William and Phoebe was the answer to a long held question - What ever happened to them? Phoebe and William were married at Lackford, Suffolk on 8 March 1834. Their first daughter, Eliza was born in Lackford, but Emily and John were born elsewhere - according to the 1841 census for Lackford. Anyway, I would love to know more about the descendants of William and Phoebe. Whatchagot? cheers, Richard

My grandmother was a Rose Rivett (sometime spelt Revitt), born in 1868 in South Australia. Her father was a James Rivett and his father, apparently, a George Rivett, born about 1820. Mr. Harris, I wonder if he could be your George Rivett!
Regards
Denise

Hello Joy I have a Rivett connection in Jessie Ada Rivett(Foan)my Grandmother.

I would like to know what became of Robert Rivett born 1812 - ? son of Robert Rivett "Senior" 1792 - 1848.

I believe he may have joined up in the British Army, Manchester Regiment 1/96th of foot and was followed by his brother George born 1814 - 1882 who enlisted in 1833 and went to Norfolk Island as Convict Guard in 1840.

George discharged from Army in 1846 while in Tasmania and I have found information that states George Rivett and (possibly our) Robert Rivett stayed in Australia after discharging. Any help would be appreciated. Phil Harris.

Monica, Can you please supply some more information. As you don't give any dates I am unsure if it is a match. I have several Robert Rivetts in my tree. Also I no longer believe Elizabeth Thurlow belongs in my tree. Robert Rivett Born 1792 Kenninghall married Elizabeth Amos. His son George Rivett was born 1814 Kenninghall, on Georges DIGGER details it says mother Elizabeth Amos. Not Elizabeth Thurlow. I have reason to believe that his Daughter Elizabeth Hannah provided the info so I imagine that it would be correct. Robert George Rivett 1849 b Adelaide,Robert George Rivett B 1869 Rocky Flat Talbot Vic George is my GGG GrandFather RG 1849 my GG GFather & RG my GFather married Alice Agnes Wilsmore.
Contact Me joy.williams@iinet.net.au
Regards Joy

Hi, I think we are researching the same thing. MY great great grandfather was Thomas albert Rivett his wife was Mary Elizabeth Archer/Mary Ellen Grace (there seems to be some confusion to which name is hers as both are mixed on marriage and death certificates...investigating that still.
thomas was buried in the Springvale Cementary in Melbourne Victoria, he also out lived his son, Edwin Arthur Rivett(my great grandfather) by 4 yrs.
If Thomas was yr great grandfather then yr father or mother was a brother or sister to my greatgrandfather, if so which was it?
If you need any information on any family members fom Edwin down I can help...but yes we are having the same difficulties tracing Thomas's family.
If I find anything I will let you know
Regards
Kathy Smith

Hi Joy,

I am also researching rivett. Also a decendant of George Rivett born 1814 Kenninghall, Norfolk, England. Married Charlotte Elizabeth Bevis. If this is also your George rivett then I can let you know that I have found his death certificate which lists his parents as Robert Rivett born 1796 Norfolk and Elizabeth Amos also born 1796. You will find their details in the 1841 UK Census. George is not listed on the census but at 27yrs he would unlikely to still be at home. I am frustrated however that I cannot find any more info that the census records on the parents. For your info my Grandfather was Bertrand Grenville, son of Robert George 2nd and Alice Agnes. Hope this info helps.

The details are as follows:
Henry d 31/5/1822 m Susanna Draper 21/10/1848 d 28/12/1900
Children:
John Draper b 11/8/1849 d 11/3/1874
Maurice b 26/3/1852 m Susanna Sophia Saunders 5/11/1883
Clara Ann b 9/6/1857 m Charles Neves 20/10/1877
Arthur b 21/11/1859 d 6/5/1896 m Ann Rolfe 11/3/1884
William Henry b 2/9/1865 m Annie Elizabeth Wright at Attleburgh Norfolk 26/8/1891
Stephen died 30/4/1872 Aged 17yrs I do not have a birth date.
My father remembers his father Albert having siblings called Walter, Daisy, Violet & Percy. He thinks Percy moved to London. We used to keep in touch with Walter who lived in Sittingbourne in Kent he passed away about 36ys ago. He had a son called George who passed away about 25yrs ago. I still keep in touch with George's oldest son Roger.
My grandparents came up from Kent to Surrey to find work in the 1920's. I have a copy of Alberts birth certificate it states he was born 14/6/1888 father Maurice (yardman) & Susanna Sophia residence Kingston. Birth registered in the Bridge district of Kent. Married on 18/10/1917 certificate states occupation of Maurice as Shepherd. They had one son called Victor Gordon born on 9/2/1931 in Witley Surrey. Albert died 27/5/1970 death certificate states Faversham as place of birth not sure how accurate this is.
I would be very interested if there was any kind of connection or if you had more information.

Hi I have just come across your posting while trying to find out more about my family. I believe the fourth child of Maurice is Albert Victor my grandfather. He was born on 14 June 1888 in Faversham Kent. I remember he had a brother called Walter he was a couple of years younger than him. We used to visit him in Sittingbourne Kent. Walter had one son called George. He had four children, Roger, David, Carol & Mark. They all live in Kent. Albert Victor's birth certificate states that the district is Bridge and Susanna's residence is Kingston. Albert Victor married Violet Lilian Jarman on 18 October 1917 in the district of Faversham with Maurice as father occupation shepherd. They had one son Victor Gordon on 9 February 1931(my father). He Married Shirley Harman on 12 March 1955. I am their only daughter Margaret Lilian born on 2 October 1955. I never knew anymore of my grandfathers siblings only that there were four. I have a family bible that was started by Henry & Susanna with entries of their children, John Draper born 11 August 1849, Maurice born 26 March 1852, Stephen born 15 August 1854, Clara Ann born 9 June 1857, Arthur born 21 November 1859 & William Henry born 2 September 1865, given to me by my grandfather. Unfortunately there are no entries after Henry's children.I believe Maurice was my great-grandfather. I keep in touch with my cousin Roger in Kent unfortunately his father passed away some time ago.

Re: ROBERT GEORGE RIVETT B 1848 AT SEA OFFCOAST sa

Greetings,
I have just read the postings re Robert George Rivett, and as a Hopper researcher, I can endorse the previous replies to this message that there is definitely NO BIGAMY here. Far from being involved in any bigamy, Bertha (not Berta) Hopper was in fact not a 'silly woman' at all, but a rather brave young lady who at nineteen took on the family of Robert George Rivett, a forty one year old widower. RGR's first family included a son named Robert George, and then one of RGR's sons with Bertha was also Robert George. This has already been set out in detail in previous postings to this site. Some of the confusion over the three Robert Georges may have arisen because of the age difference between Bertha and her husband - at the time of their wedding, RGR had children closer in age to Bertha than he was himself. If any Hopper researchers out there are interested in more detail about Bertha and her family, please reply to this thread and I'll be happy to share more info with you and get the story straight. Cheers Julie H.

Hello Roberta,
We recently bought a house here in Saskatoon. 1911 Coy Ave. I am sure that your husband is familiar with it as his parents lived here for 26 years before they moved to BC. The house was originally built in 1919 and I am very interested in the history of it. I acquired some information from the library but was wondering if your mother in law has some old pictures of the house or any interesting stories about the house. Thanks in advance,
Randi-Lee
