I think that the John Roark who married the Back woman was born in 1792 in South Carolina to old Barnabas Roark.

The 1792 date is sometimes used by us that descend from the other John Roark who was born in Tennessee. I think he "aquired" that date to a statement his 2nd wife mad in a pension claim. By census records he is born before 1790. From what I can estimate he is born between 1784 and 1790. He was married to Nancy Sloan and Elizabeth Brock. Both are grand daughters of Jesse Brock.

As for your question, no I haven't researched him. Dave Roark would be the best source of info on him.

For those Roarks and associated families, you might be interested in knowing that a Sgt. Amund Roark, San Diego, California, received the Medal of Honor during the Viet Nam Conflict.
After a leave inwhich Sgt. Roark was informed that a divorce was being initiated, Sgt. Roark returned to Viet Nam. A NVA hand grenade was throw into an area which included several U.S. soldiers. Sgt. Roark threw his body on the grenade, sacrificing his life for several fellow soldiers.

Donna, Im Stephanie Fulton aka Finley & Swango, my mother is Patricia Long aka Fulton & Sears, her mother is Juanita Roark aka Long & Nelson, her mother is Pearl Evelyn Burkhart aka Roark & Pennington....she never had children with Ben Pennington he was her second husband and they didnt stay married very long and he remarried she continued to do her best to raise Juanita's children after that Donald Long, Patricia Long, Michael Long, David Long (david is actually a nelson) i think Juanita passed away before she could get his name corrected she married Archie Nelson in June of 1972 and passed away later in the winter of 1972. Are you the cousin of my mom's that i met as a child? Did you live in Georgetown Oh. ? Pearl use to tell me stories and take me everywhere as a child, If i recall correctly her children were all fathered by Sherman Roark and im not sure of correct spelling i never remember seeing him in any pictures or his name documented anywhere either. She was a midwife that rode on horseback to deliver babies and then of course that grew into her becoming a nurse. Im very much interested in talking to you some more my personal e-mail is steffulton_2006@yahoo.com thank you so much for reaching out it helps to know someone else is also trying to keep her memory alive and acknowledge her acheivements
Stephanie Swango

For those John Roark b~1790 researchers that are interested I'll share some of the interesting info I have gathered lately. I have entered my DNA into the genetree database and had some interesting matches, with the closest all being basically Germanic.

From the genetree.com base here are my closest matches, 95%+ with several being perfect although not as many markers were tested. I'll list the furthest known ancestor for each match.

1)Giesbrecht NEUDORF- 1722 Tiegenhof, Gross Werder, West Prussia, Poland

2)Niels Christian HANSEN- 7 Sep 1887 Hjorring, Denmark

3)Johan VESTER- b. Stolp, Germany

4)Gabriel Philipp Wilhelm KORNDORFER- 25 Oct 1785 Wollstein, Hessen

From Familytreedna.com

5)Hans Rüdel, b.c. 1605, Kraslice, Czech Republic

6)Also have matches with a Sides, Beck, Werner, Dolder, and Croker but they do not list their furthest known ancestors.

It would be awesome if we could somehow make a connection in Europe with these men. Probably impossible but maybe not with the right minds put together. I contacted a DNA U106 researcher and he noted that our DNA was unique in the fact that we only match who we are closely related to unlike the other U106 members who sometimes gets thousands of matches at low level markers. We have only a small handful.

Just wanted to share with the members who might be intrested.

My research of the Berger MO ROARK families began when William Roark born abt 1790 TN married NANCY BREEDING also born 1790 TN.
> William of Berger, MO being a son of JAMES ROARK born 1767 Montgomery Co., VA that md NANCY FINNEY born 1790 VA and among their children listed are William (1790), Michael (1799, Charles (1800), Thomas (1803), James Jr., Louisa.

> JAMES ROARK 1767 VA is son of MICHAEL ROARK born 8 Sept. 1745 in Bucks Co., PA then died 4 Jan. 1839 Hawkins Co., TN, and Michael was md to LETTICA GRIGSBY born 1748 PA, whom died 26 April 1844 in Hawkins Co., TN.

> JAMES 1767 & wife Nancy Breeding both migrated into NEWPORT, MO, where JAMES died 13 May 1855. Nancy had died in 1842 in Newport. (it is possible, "not proved" that James md again from 1842 until his death in 1855, but doubtful)

> One son of JAMES for sure was WILLIAM 1790 who migrated to Berger, MO, and died 2 years after his Mother Nancy. William 1790 died on 2 May 1845 at Berger, MO

> WILLIAM & NANCY have one proven son born in Berger, MO, named ELIJAH William Roark born 3 August 1832 at Berger MO & he died 19 September 1885 at Hermann, MO.

>> Michael ROARK 1745 PA - 1839 TN is claimed to be a son of TIMOTHY O'ROARK born 1700 Ireland & died April 1769 at Frederick, VA.

> Among the 8 known children of Michael 1745 are only TWO maLe children named: JAMES & Michael, Jr., and, SIX (6) Daughters named: SARAH (SALLY) 1768 PA died 7 September 1855 Hazard, Perry County, KY as Mrs. ELIJAH COMBS, SR. (General Combs); Rebecca Roark (Mrs. Wm. Tunnel), Betsy Roark (Mrs. Thomas Self), SALLEY Roark (Mrs.George Reynolds), JULIA Roak (Mrs. John Kirkpatrick), POLLY Roark (Mrs. George Morrisett)

NOTE: Many of the Missouri descents of JAMES 1767 & his son William 1790 have not been posted by researchers on Ancestry. Hopefully many of you will post your proved relatives to this ROARK ancestry back to Ireland roots and some MALES will join the DNA projects.

ROARK's related are in MO 1830. 1840, 1850 Federal Census records and later. Some ROARK decendants are also found in Miller County, MO after 1890.

Hello Deborah,
It's really nice to be in touch with you!! My parents divorced after we moved to NC, and my dad moved back to Ark. My mother and I, and my three brothers stayed here near Greensboro. I never was close to my father and grandmother, even though we visited a few summers. We spent our time on other things I guess and I never really knew of Grandma's family. My mother said my gma spoke of Jack, but no one else. Since I have been online learning of my history, I have discovered Elijah O' Roark came here from Ireland and settled in Stokes County, NC...which just happens to be the next county west of where I've lived most of my life!!! How cool is that! His descendants include William Riley Roark, who married Nancy Fulk, who had Byrd Elias Roark. Caz Eugene Kennedy public profile on ancestry .com has it Listed this way..it was a post online from Ann Ambrose that said she is related to Ethel Irene..there is a 1920 Census form attached to their tree..it shows all of gma's brothers and sisters living in the home at the time ..I believe Nora was 8 and Jack was 3..anyways...I have no pictures of them, may ave a few of my gma somewhere..so nice to know more about my family. please feel free to call if u like 336-453-4053, or write..199-A Satterfield Rd., Madison, NC. 27025.
Thanks,
Dee Ann Dallas Plummer

Hello Carol,
My name is Ginger Dee Ann Dallas Plummer, but I just go by Dee Ann Plummer. Byrd Elias Roark, son of William Riley, was my great grandfather. (you have him listed as Elias Byrd, and married to Mannie Emily Miller) He married Mannie Emily Miller, and had eight children according to my info. His youngest daughter, Ethel Irene Roark was my grandmother. She married Ted Dallas, and had three daughters and one son. My father was Bobby Dallas. My grandfather died in 1940 after he crashed his new crop duster..according to my mother. My grandmother got remarried to A.G.Slocum, who raised my dad, and was my Papa! I don't know alot about my father's family, but I am learning alot online! I am happy to share more of what I know, and learn in the future with you..if you'd like me to! By the way, I was born in Wynne, Ark. but have lived most of my life in NC. I have lived in Rockingham County (next to Stokes Co.) since 1976, and I am amazed to find I might have relatives here!!!
Thanks for your post,
Dee Ann Plummer

My wife who is related states the shooting that occurred at the market occurred in the late 1960's or early 1970's, the market has not been there for sometime. There are a multitude of Roarks still living in the area. Many Roarks exist in our local cemeteries. My problem is I have no name of which male Roark it is that married my wife's half aunt and we do not know her first name either. The people in question would have been born late 1890's early 1900's

Interesting - I do not recall seeing any mention of Roarks in the Abingdon area before. My 4th great grandfather Zebedee Weatherly lived in the area for some 20+ years before his death in the early 1850s.
My paticular interest is that my 3rd great grandfather James Andrew married Charity Roark in NC - spent some time in Tennessee before moving on to Indiana where he died. I have no knowledge that this family spent any time in the Abingdon area at all. Charity's brother either preceded or followed Jame Andrew and Charity to Indiana.
So I have to wonder if there is any affiliation with the Roark you mention and the Weatherly clan that spent time there. You did not mention a time frame for the individual not the event. Based on the Hiway 11 location is it accurate to assume that these folks were there post civil war into the 20th century?

I am trying to locate a Roark family who lived in Abingdon VA. Unfortunately I have no info on this family other than a male Roark managed a market on Hwy 11 called Rex's. The market was located near where Pioneer Chevrolet is now quite a few years ago. The male Roark and his son were robbed one evening and the son was killed. Thats all I know. If someone is related or knows this family and has the name of the male Roark who managed the market please contact me. Thank you very much.

Hi Dave: I went to the Myfamily.com site and had problems but I called them and they helped me. They said that there was a Roark at this site and they e-mailed a message to them stating that I was interested in contacting them. So I will wait until I hear from them. Billieirene@dslextreme.com

well, I do know that there was a William Roark that showed up in Harlan, Ky on the 1830 census. I never looked into him alot, but I remember reading in the Dickey Diaries about him I think.

"Old" Bill ROARK lived in Harlan, was a stutterer; he was very witty. James HOWARD was accused of stealing a steer from Johnson GIBSON of Cumberland Ford. He was passing the field where ROARK was plowing, had a stone bruise on his heels, was limping. HOWARD hollered, "What's the matter?" "I h-hurt my h-heel running after Johnson GIBSON'S steer." This aroused Howard's wrath and brought down curses on the witty ROARK'S head.

Jeff said "can you give some more information about this John Thomas Roark, like siblings, children, ect? Has anyone male descendants had their DNA tested?" .....
John Thomas Roark b. 1842 in Kings River Twp, Madison, Co., Arkansas had 3 siblings: Amelia b 1834, Elvyra 1838, William Williamson b. 1840 and John Thomas Roark born 1842, their father was William C. ROARK b. 1814 in Tenn. That's all I know about John Thomas Roark b. 1842. I know his brother Williamson and their father fought in the Civil War. His Mother's name might have been Shepherd but I have NOT been able to prove the marriage license I found belonged to this William Roark born in 1814 in Tenn... Jeff, I sure hope this leads to lots of information on John b. 1842 and if anyone else has any input or leads it sure would be appreciated.

To the family historians of the family of BARNABUS ROARK, I need help. Here is my problem; I believe my 4th Great-Grandmother Matilda Roark Turner is a daughter of Barnabus. I have never seen her mention in any of the papers on Barnabus. This is why I think she is; She was born in South Carolina in 6Jan1797, she married William Turner in Clay County, KY in 1817 and Able Pennington gave his consent for her to marry. Matilda died on 05Mar1874 in Perry Twp. Boone County, Indiana. She and William were the first to enter land in Perry Twp. in the 1830's. She is buried in a small cemetery on their farm. This is the same farm where I was born and raised. So Barnabus Roark family do you think she might belong to your family? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Rebecca Merritt
Lebanon, Indiana

Doing a little searching on Ancestry tonight and I noticed a Barnabus Roark from Greenville, SC. His wife Christian marrys a Able Pennington after Barnabus dies. I believe this is the key I was looking for. Able Pennington gave consent for Matilda to marry Wm Turner in 1817, in Clay Co. KY. I had always wondered how Able Pennington fit-in.
So I believe we are not from the Roark Gap Roarks.

I along with a few more descendants of John Roark have had our DNA tested and it seems we are getting some interesting data. With every direction I try to go with my DNA it points to a German descent. All of my closest matches point back to a Germanic ancestry also.

I have perfect matches with the Grimes family who descend from Emanuel Grimes b. 1786 in Washington County Tn. Also, a perfect hit with a Rainbolt family from Texas who descend from Elisha Rainbolt(who lived in Washington Co. Tn at the same time our Emanuel Grimes and John Roark were born), son of Joseph Rainbolt born ~1730 in Cape Fear NC.

I'm going to go out on a limb but I am predicting that with more testing from the Rainbolt family we may find that Emanuel and John are descendants of Joseph Rainbolt paternally.

Hi, are you a cousin? I have an obit for her, and it states there she was from South Carolina.

OBITUARY: LEBANON PIONEER May 20, 1874
Died-At her residence near Fayette, this county, Sunday March 16, 1874, Mrs. Matilda Turner, aged 77 years, 2 months and 9 days. She was in Lebanon on Wednesday preceding her death, apparently in good health, and on Friday was at Fayette, in N.N. Davis' store, where she complained of her teeth hurting her, and called for some camphor, whereupon she went to bed, and summoning a doctor, found her unconscious on his arrival. she was removed to her residence in the evening, one-fourth mile distant, where she lingered until about eleven o'clock on the following Sunday, when death relieved her of her suffering.
She was born near Charleston, South Carolina, and was one of the first settlers of Boone County. She was the mother of five children, all of whom are dead save one- Mrs. H.B. Darnall, of this place. Her remains were deposited in the family burying grounds on Monday, attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Peace to her ashes.

Hi, I need some Roark Family to help me on this one. This is what I know;
Matilda Roark was born in Charleston, South Carolina on 06 Jan 1797. She married William Turner on 19 Feb 1817 in Clay Co.KY. By 1834 she and husband are living in Boone County, IN. She died 15 March 1974 in Perry Twp. Boone Co. IN. I would like to find her parents. Able Pennington gave consent for marriage to William Turner in Clay Co. KY in 1817. I was born and raise on her farm in Boone Co IN and she is my 4th Great Grandma. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Jeffery,
What a small world we have here, I have a picture of my greatgrandmother Lucy about a year before she died. She died in 1949 the year before I was born. I will try to scan it and put it on here for you to see.
Shiela,
I'd say that your great grandmother Lucy Collett Roark is my great grandmother Ruth Collett Roarks aunt. She would be a sister to my great, great grandfather Manfred Collett, son of Billy Collett and Alice or Alicia Caldwell Collett. By the way I've seen an old picture of Lucy and Billy together. Gracie Collett Griffith had it. She is the daughter of Caleb Collett, brother to Manfred and Lucy.

Jeffery,
Thank you for responding to my post, since that post I have found almost everything I was looking for. I found my great great grandmother was Alice Caldwell Collett, she was married to Billy Collett. My mother found my great grandmother Lucy Collett Roark's death certificate and it had her mother and father listed. Finding all the family is an on going adventure so if I can help you please don't hesitate to e-mail me.
Thank You
Shelia

Our Grandfather Willie aka Billy Collett had a sister named Lucy. Billy's Father was Manford Collett, and his wife was Nannie Sizemore Collett, they also had a brother Berry who was killed in a shoot out with some Smith boys in Ky. There were other children, as well. I believe they were in Leslie County until Pappy moved to Jackson County, around the late 70's, early 80's. Please reply with any info. I am familiar with Karenb06, and she has passed away. Thank you.
