And I am sure you will find a link (unless there was a name change or an adoption).....

For all of the enumeration / transcription problems we encounter, the US census data is really quite complete!

Robb-Waller-Kelley-Montgomery photos - SET 1

Please use my NEW e-mail address Ardraf@earthlink.net

Here are the digitized photos of the materials we've acquired from Mary Koza's family. Once you have these, many of your questions will be answered. All were taken in the highest possible resolution and downsized in high quality for transmitting. They are all .JPG files.

DAR-JRobb-1 thru 4 - These are the four pages from Mary Kelley's DAR application on her lineage back to her ancestor James Robb who served in the American Revolution.

FitzAliceW-Baptism - This is Alice Watson Fitzgerald's baptismal certificate.

HolligerObit - Greta Kelly Holliger's obituary.

KellyFHConf-1 thru 4 - These are the letters pertaining to Francis Hart Kelley's military service in the Confederate States of America.

KelleyLine-1 thru 3 - These include the John Kelley-Ann Templeton pension information and the two Kelley lineage charts. Note in the KelleyLine-3 that a very faint pencil mark around Elizabeth and John Bond indicates they go together. The typed spacing on that was not very clear.

KelleyMSketch - The sketch of Mary Kelley done by her daughter Alice Watson FitzGerald.

Montgomery-1 thru 3 - These outline the Montgomery ancestry.

MontWaller-1 thru 3 - The War Dept. letter outlining Revolutionary War service by the Hugh Montgomery and John Waller.

PhotoAlbum-1 thru 2 - What the photo album looks like and the first picture inside.

PhotoGirl, PhotoMan, PhotoWoman - These three loose photos were tucked inside the photo album.

RobbAliceLtr-1 thru 2 - This is the letter written to Alice Robb regarding her paints.

RobbBible-1 thru 7 - These show what the exterior of the John W. Robb and Mary Montgomery's bible looks like, it's title page, and the relevant title pages. By zooming in on the pages you really can see the writing quite clearly. Note the erasure on the third birth entry from Leanora to Lanora.

RobbGDaughters-1 thru 2 - This photo also was tucked inside the photo album. This is the only marked photo and it says on the back that it's the Granddaughters of Lydia Waller Robb. They are all named and who's child they are.

RobbKellyPhoto-1 thru 2 - This is the unknown older gentleman. It was not inside the bible like the other loose photos.

RobbLine-1 thru 3 - These outline the Robb ancestry.

RobbWallerLtr-1 thru 2 - This is the letter from J.W. Waller to R.A. Waller written in 1866 shortly after the Civil War.

WallerRobbLine-1 thru 2 - These outline the John Waller-Mary Small family and the John Thomas Robb-Lydia Waller family.

We hope these materials will help you in researching your families.
Ardra FitzGerald
Since 2005 I have been making the genealogical materials from the estate of Mary Emmett [FitzGerald] Koza available online. Last month I received the last of the collection and last week I added the last items on the Robb board. Many of you contacted me in the past and we exchanged information.

Although I never located any direct descendants, I have found what certainly will be a good "home" for these materials. Today I shipped them to:
Mr. Paul Brockman, Director
Manuscript and Visual Collections
Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center
Indiana Historical Society
450 W. Ohio St.
Indianapolis, IN 46202.

I have enjoyed talking with many of you and thank you for your help in tracing the lines.

Holly,

I'm very pleased to hear from someone of the Posey County branch. I assume you saw my original post that explains how I came to have the Robb/Waller/Montgomery/Kelley materials. If not, please trace back to the original where I posted the Bible's data pages.

Right now we happen to be our motorhome, traveling for several months. Because of that, all I have is what is in my computer or what I already posted. I have to admit I haven't heard from many of the Posey County branch and I strongly suspect that the photo album is from that side. I would love to find someone who is directly related - especially someone who can identity some of the people in the photos. In any case, some of the people have been helped by what I posted and that would please Mary FitzGerald Koza whose parents were Mary Kelley (your side) and Guy FitzGerald (my husband's side).

All I have is what was posted and the photo album so I don't know anything about the various people and where they settled. I've enjoyed really enjoyed reading about your various branches.

Ardra FitzGerald

Hi Susan

I don't have any information on this particular family.

However, I do have a ROBB connection. My g-g-g-grandmother was Ann(e) Jane ROBB, probably born c 1830. She married John GUY, a farmer. They were near Omagh, Co Tyrone. I believe John GUY had a brother Andrew GUY (d 1894).

If you come across any connection, I'd love to hear details. I haven't been able to find a marriage for them, however on later civil records there is a daughter Elizabeth to Jane ROBB and John GUY, and I think she was probably the youngest child.

Census records have the family around Maine, Cappagh (Killyclogher).
Karen

Robb-Waller-Kelley-Montgomery Photo Album - SET 1

On July 4, 2005 I posted nine sets of photos pertaining to the ROBB-WALLER-KELLEY-MONTGOMERY families of Indiana. Set 5 included a photo of the cover of a leather-bound photo album. I have finally digitized all of the photos (with verso where applicable) in that album. Unfortunately, most do not have names on them, but a few do. I strongly suspect that the album belonged to Mary A. Kelley 1879-1955 who was the wife Jay FitzGerald or her mother Mary Alice Robb 1853-1945 who was the wife of Francis Hart Kelley. They all lived in Indiana.

Most of the pictures were taken by photographers in Evansville IN, especially S.W. Douglas. Others are by William R. Wright in Princeton, W.C. Hunton in Booneville, Marshall E. Kimball and J.F. O’Brien in Owensville, L.W. Jones and A. Willis in Mt. Vernon, George F. Allison and F.G. Swain in Worthington, and Smith & Dyer in Indianapolis. A few were taken in other states. As far as I can tell, these photographers practiced their profession from the late 1800s (perhaps 1860 and later) into the early 1900s. The attire in the photos further indicates they were taken in this time period.

Toward the end of the album some slots have two photos. In one case they might be the same person at different ages. In another case it might be a woman and either her husband or father. Several others have printed names at the bottom of the photo and I couldn’t establish whether it was the name of the photographer (the verso was blank) or the name of the person photographed. It might be the latter because several include the same surname but with different initials.

If you recognize some of the people photographed, please do post the information here so that others may benefit in the future.

My grandmother on my Mother's side was Jessie Watson who is the youngest sister of Nora Watson. My grandmother Jessie Watson Symons died 1929 in Colorado and was buried in Gray, Oklahoma. My Mother Aliene Symons Cheek married in Kansas and moved to California so we never had an opportunity to meet my Grandmother Jessie's (Watson side of the family), although I do remember references of her aunt's as she was only 12 when her Mother Jessie died and stayed at times with one or more of her aunt's.
In genealogy I have Nora Watson and Homer Robb as husband.
I have children as:
Charles E. Robb abt. 1912 OK
Nanie Robb abt. 1914 OK
Ruby Robb abt. 1916 OK
Kathryn Robb abt. 1918 CO
Lee Robb abt. 1919 CO

I would appreciate any information you could give me to add to the Watson genealogy also any interesting history. I have heard my Grandmother Jessie Watson Symons was a very beautiful lady , a marvelous cook, wonderful disposition.

Hi Karen,

The GROSSART'S I am researching are from Scotland, more specifically in the area of Maryhill or Glasgow, Scotland. CATHERINE GROSSART was brn abt. 1924 in Glasgow, her parents ETHEL and DAVID GROSSART were married in 1923 in Milton Twp, in the brugh of Glasgow. David Grossart's parents would have been Edward Grossart and Annie Grossart (nee: Morris) and I figure they would have been born around 1888??

For a time I have Catherine and probably her parents Ethel and David living at 22 AGNES ST, MARYHILL, GLASGOW. this would have been sometime in the late 1940's early 1950's.

I am trying to research the family of Gordon HUNTER who was born in Glasgow on July 19 1948. His birth certificate indicates he was born to Annie Rodgers MCCALLUM and David HUNTER who were married in 1942??? He was adopted by Catherine GROSSART as a baby.

Any information on any of these lines, Grossart's, Hunters or Mccallum's around this time in the are of Glasgow, Scotland would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Hannah

Hi Hannah,
I am also researching the GROSSART line. You don't mention places, dates, ethnicity, or religion. My line is German, most recently immigrating in 1903 to the USA from Hungary [Serbia now]. Before 1700 they were Catholic, but converted to Lutheran about then.
I have contacted researchers for a line from Scotland, but we have not found any connection so far. I don't have any details, but most were in the Western states in the USA.

Happy Hunting,
Karen Grossart
family@grossart.net

Peter Watson Robb was my Grandmother's brother. (She was Elizabeth Ferguson Robb.) He was born in Dundee in 1843, son of Kinnaird and Margaret Robb. His siblings were, William, Thomas and Margaret. He was a stonemason and I believe he worked at one point on the Canadian Pacific Railway. He died in 1927 and is comemorated on the gravestone of my grandparents, George and Elizabeth Mudie in the Western Cemetery, Dundee. I have a photograph of my grandmother as a child with her parents and older brother. I also have photographs of Kinnaird Robb.

It's funny how these genealogy list dialogues (or multilogues) can extend over years. I myself rarely browse or post on these lists and when I do I don't track my posts, so I depend on e-mail notification for reply prompting, and it seems that e-mail notification is often sporadic (or perhaps it is just frequently spam-filtered out.

At any rate, I never received a notification that Lawsonw1125 posted those bible pages. At any rate, I've now reviewed these and it appears that this is a family stemming from Jesse (1786-1865) & Katherin (1793-1845) Robb. I don't know anything about this family myself, but I have exhaustively researched all the ROBB families of colonial PA, and worked up criteria for distinguishing them from the German RAPP and RAUB families that were at least equally prevalent on the western frontiers of colonial PA. I've summarized this work on my Robb page: http://www.johnbrobb.com/JBR-ROBB-sur.htm

I also have a pretty complete set of abstracts for (mostly Scotch-Irish) ROBB households in the USCensus through 1840, and a partial collection for the subsequent decades, and in 1820 I find what is probably this family of Jesse & Katherin in WashingtonCoPA, Fallowfield Township, and I find what appears to be the same family in 1830 in Nottingham Twp of the same county. The age categories for both parents are wrong in 1820 but the children match perfectly to the bible records, and in the 1830 Jesse Robb household the parents are the right ages too. Meanwhile, I find no other Jesse ROBBs for these years, or for 1810 either (though the 1810 USCensus for OH is missing). In 1840 OTOH, there's a household for Jesse in BelmontCoOH, and although the age of Jesse is once again shfted ten years into the past, the rest of the household matches the bible records pretty well, except, of course, that the older children are all gone.

Unfortunately, although the bible indicates that Jesse survived until 1865, I do not find him in either the 1850 or the 1860 USCensus. All my searches were for "Jes* Rob*", and I added "Jes Rab*" for 1850 and 1860, when I found Jesse's surname in 1840 spelled "Rabb" (a Scotch-Irish, not a German spelling), rather than "Robb" (although there is some ambiguity about the second letter, which might be an "o" after all). Otherwise, the only Jesse I find for 1850 and 1860 is living, and was born in South Carolina, and aside from the fact that it would be extremely anomalous for an old man to relocate from western PA to SC, the ages of this one Jesse are wrong.

From the spelling of his putative wife's name in the bible, "Katherin" I suspect that she, at least, was German, and there's a chance that Jesse was too, although the names of his children lean toward a Scotch-Irish identity. Jesse itself was not a name much used by the Scotch-Irish, and except for Samuel and Joseph, the Scotch-Irish tended to eschew biblical names, while the Germans favored them. There is a possibility, thus, that this family is German. Many Germans sooner or later adopted the most populat spelling "Robb" for the soundalike complex that German RAPP and RAUB inhabited.

If Jesse was born in 1786 in Pennsylvania, I would lean more heavily toward this German hypothesis, because I have worked out all the Scotch-Irish colonial families and none have the name Jesse anywhere in their descendancy trees, and if there were latecomers from Ireland or Scotland, it is even less likely that a boy would have been named Jesse there. I also note that the other names on the same pages of the 1820 and 1830 USCensuses for WashingtonCoPA feature at least a few German surnames, including the German soundalike surname "Rabe" in 1830, and German soundalike "Rape" in 1820.

It might be that DNA testing a male descendant of this line surnamed Robb would turn up results indicative more of Germanic than of British ancestry, though there is a good deal of overlap between the two populations on the Y-Chromosome DNA that is usually tested for genealogical purposes.

John Robb
http://www.johnbrobb.com/
I am also descended from James Robb, and would be fascinated to speak both with John Robb and with Mr. Lawson. I've done some informal research on James Robb over the years (I'm descended from his grandson, Nathaniel Thayer Robb), and would love to hear what you've learned about him. My e-mail is jbc523@cox.net. Many, many thanks for posting the pages from the Bible - what a find! Jean

I am researching the Cumberland County, PA Robbs and came across a Susannah L. Barr who married a L. T. Protzman. Mr Protzman was born in Franklin Co, PA in 1833. Don't have any information for Susannah's birth or death. I believe they were in Wayne County, IA and possibly died there. I also have a couple of McKee gentlemen that married into the Washington Co, VA ROE line on my grandmother's side.

Her father was Samuel Barr from PA. Her husband was a Louis F. Protzman and they were married in Van Buren County, IA in 1858. Just found that information at familysearch.org. I had a lot of ancestry from Van Buren Co, IA that ended up in Wayne Co, IA.
