Rode in Brooklyn- Benjamin J Rode

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has information on a Benjamin J Rode who worked at a lumberyard in Brooklyn (Rode and Horn Lumber Company) into the 1920s. His census data indicates that both his parents are from New York but a passenger list from Bremen, Germany would suggest he was from Russia.

He died Jan. 16th, 1929 and his birth year is approx. 1884.
He married Katherine *Steil.

He had a child named William Louis Rode who was a mounted police officer in NYC (1898-1949)/

I know this is probably far off, but I was reading your message, originally going to tell you to try the free website on the National Ach. site which tells you where each civil war vetern is buried. From there it will give loads of info, but after reading the story again, strangely we have some family members born in that area and some great uncles and such that moved out to LA as well. Again, it may be way off, but if you have a chance have a look under Arthur rode and back to see if anything slightly matches you. I know my great great uncle (arthurs great uncle had dealings out there) :)

Civil War lieutenant August Rode

Hi All,

I am seeking out my great-great grandfather August Rode, who came from the Alsace-Lorraine region in France and served as a first lieutenant in the Civil War. He settled down in Paterson, New Jersey, with a wife named Annanee (Anna) Hertig who was born in Germany/Prussia. They had a son together named Louis Edward Rode who was born in New Jersey in 1873 and died in Los Angeles in 1959.

If anyone knows any information about this man, I would love to hear from you. He is a mystery to me, and I have been researching him tirelessly.
I can't seem to find records of him or his service here on ancestry.com, your help is greatly appreciated!

I'm looking for any information on a Wilhelm/William Rode who was born in Germany and lived in Poland/Russia. He was born 8 Aug 1854. His father died when he was 2 years old. He married Gottliebe Fromme in 1882 and they had two children. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1888 and settled in South Dakota. There they had six more children.

William relocated to Washington and in 1901 had a child with Julia (last name unknown). His name was Arthur. Julia died when he was 3 years old.

William then married Katherine Rexin in 1905 (they had no children). Both are buried at Dallas, Oregon.

It was in this generation that the name change to Rode occured apparently.

Have you been able to find any additional ancestors to Ludwig and Chritianna that you are willing to share?

Hi,

Conrad Rode who married Clementine Schierhoff was my grandfather's (Henry Becker) fist cousin. Conrad's mother, Dorothea Becker was the sister of Henry's father, Peter Becker. Peter's parents were Karl Becker and Phillipine Dauth. Phillipine is also listed as Dorothea's mother on Dorothea's death record, but I think this might not be true. I have found a marriage record for Karl (or Charles) and Phillipine dated 30 Dec., 1847, at least five years after Dorothea's birth. I'm thinking that Karl was probably married before and Phillipine was Dorothea's step-mother. Can you shed any light on this?

Henry Lau
lau2862@shaw.ca

I am trying to find Parents of my relative Herman Roede. He was born 1911 in Iowa?? He lived in Melvin, Osceola all his life. He is not listed in any census. I just found out that it might be Herman Rohde age 61 born in Germany. He was married to Wilhminnie(Hard to read) she was 51 born in Germany, They had one daughter listed Mary E age 18 born in Iowa.It list that they had six children I found this in the 1910 census living at Black Hawk, Grundy, IA which is near were Herman Roede lived. I assume this must be his parents and do not know why the name change. If this might be the family you can email me paulpuy@aol.com Paul

This is a longshot, but there is also a Fred Rode in my family who lived in Nebraska around the same time. I have no information on him other than that he was paid to marry a woman who was already pregnant with my gggrandfather. The child was called Albert Rudolph and took Fred's last name of Rode (later Rodee). Albert was born in Nebraska on July 9, 1894. I know that other, legitimate children followed but I am not sure of how many or when. My ggrandmother (Albert's daughter) said that each of the children took to spelling the last name differently. Tradition says that both Fred and the woman he married (not sure of her name) were born in Germany. Do you think this could be a match?

Re: Hellen Rode, died 12/12/1907, Chicago

I found Hellen Rode (my GGM) died 12/12/07 in Chicago. She lived with her husband, Frank (we think, maybe Franz) at 3015 S. Pitney Court in 1907. They both were born in Germany, but we have not found their marriage. We think her maiden name was Loga. She was 36 when she died.

Her children were Julia (my GM), John, Helen, Celia and Anthony. I think I found John and Helen living with a John and Annie Meyer in the 1910 Census. They are listed as "son and daughter" except Annie's census form says she has had "0" children. (COOK, Roll 275, Book 2, Page 96.)

My theory is after my GGM died, the kids were parceled out and Annie was either a sister of my GGM or GGF.

So Anthony, Julia and Cecia remain missing. My grandmother (Julia) claimed her last name was "Rak" (pronounced "Rock" allegedly) when she was married in 1920, so my guess is that is who she was living with. When she had a child in 1922, she claimed her maiden name was "Rohde."

I never found them at all in 1900 census or in any immigration records.

Any hints are welcomed!!!
Maggie, I am wondering about your connection with Wilhelm Rode and Marie Wilson. My great-great-grandmother was Wilhelmina Josephine Rode, b. 1854 in Oslo (Christiania?) Norway. According to family legend, Wilhelmina was the daughter of a woman named "Marie" (surname and details unknown), who became pregnant by, but did not marry, a man with the last name of "Rode" (given name and details unknown). Wilhelmina married Emil Edward Larsen and had one daughter--my great-grandmother Edvina. The Larsen family emigrated to the U.S. in approx. 1888. Wilhelmina's mother "Marie" eventually married someone by the name of Swensen (given name and details unknown), and they had two children while still in Norway. The Swensen family emigrated to the U.S., too, possibly even before 1888. Descendants of the Larsen and Swensen families lived in and around Goodhue County, Minnesota.
