Johnny, I was so excited to get your message. I had given up hope of hearing from any of my fathers family. Johnny can you or your Dad tell me anything about Cecil? you are just a couple of years younger than my son he was born April 16, 1974. I am so excited about hearing from you I am having trouble thinking, there are so many emotions running thru me now, happy ones tho :) All the information I have are copies of Cecile and Pauline divorce papers, and my original birth certificate. Do you have a picture of Cecile you can e-mail or on your family tree I can see. Would it be ok if we kept in touch? I have no memories of Cecil I was not yet 2 when he and Pauline seperated. I was sorry to find that he had passed away. I am just going on and on. Thank you so much for answering back, you don't know how much it ment to me :) I don't know if you know but I will be 63 this year. If you would like to contact me you can reach me at wandacates49@yahoo.com or 205/210-3076. I live in Alabama. Happy Birthday a little early:)
May your birthday be a wonderful happy day as you have may mine today:)

Wanda

Possible Roden pictures?

These photos are 8”x 10” tin type and belonged to Lottie Roxie Barrett (1890 TX-1964 TX) whose husband was Edgar “Eck” Miller (1891 TX-1947 TX). Lottie’s parents were Madison Monroe “Matt” Barrett (1857 TN-1939 TX)/Martha Ann Roden (1861 TX-1938 TX). We have pictures of the Miller and Barrett ancestors and do not believe these are Miller or Barrett relatives.
Martha Ann’s parents were: Martin P. Roden (ca 1839 AL-ca 1880 TX)/Mary Elizabeth Goff (1841 LA-ca 1895 TX). We have a picture of Mary Elizabeth Goff Roden so we know this lady is not Mary Elizabeth.
Martha Ann’s grandparents were: Jesse Goff (1821 AR-after 1860)/Ann Eliza Wade (1823 LA-ca 1860 TX) and William M. Roden (ca 1818 TN-after 1880 TX)/Esther W. Calvert (ca 1819 AL-after 1880 TX).
We know that there are various spellings for the Roden name but this is the spelling that Lottie used. The pictured couple must have been important to Lottie since she managed to keep them among her few possessions. Any help to identify this couple will truly be appreciated.

Hi:) thank you for your reply. My brother and I were adopted. I have copy of the adoption papers, my brith certificate. I was adopted at age 4, my brother was 2. I remember some things. I am sorry for your loss. Would you be willing to help me if you have any information on Cecile L. Roden, having a rough time locating information on Pauline Roden. Cecile and Pauline were divorced a few months before brother was born in 1951. I don't know if Cecile knew he had a son. I never asked Mom and Dad about it. Mom told me years ago that some family members had gone to court to keep us. I don't know who it was. Again, thank you for your reply. If I don't hear from you, its ok, I understand.

Will your second edition of RIVERS THROUGH TIME: A RODEN AND MILWEE HISTORY have information about John F. Roden (b. abt. 1816 NC) who married Rachael Simmons (b. abt. 1824 TN)? They are in Marshall Co. AL in 1850 and 1860. See below. Note that there are other Rodens in this census also.

Apparently the 1850 District 25, Marshall Co., AL was enumerated 12 February 1851. My ancestor David McDuff Roden is enumerated on the 1860 federal census (below). By 1870, both David and his brother James are apprenticed to Thomas A. Coleman. By 1880, he is D. M. Rhoades, married to Eliza Capps, and living in Mississippi. After that and by the time my ancestor Eliza Ozella Roden was born in 1888, the name went back to Roden.

1850 District 25, Marshall Co., AL

24/24
James Roden 25 farmer AL
Julia F. Notice that William was born in 1835, and Rachael would have been only 11 at that time, so the question arises, Are the older children (William, Caroline, and Andrew by a different wife? John would have been 19 at the time William was born, so he was old enough to be the father of the older children, but look at these children's birth locations.

Nancy E. Smith Roden death after 1920

I've just learned that my ancestor Nancy Elizabeth Smith Roden died after 1920. She was married to James Calvin Roden in 1868, and he died in 1898 and is buried in Valley Cemetery. Last 'hit' for her was in the 1920 census, living with her daughter Rebecca, who married a Vanzandt. They lived in Mineral, Sevier County, Arkansas. Can't find a grave for her on findagrave. Can't find any hits on Ancestry after 1920. She may have died in 1926. Can anyone help with a death notice, a grave, a newspaper article, anything?

My research matches Peggy's. Arch's parents, James Calvin and Nancy Elizabeth (Smith) had 11 kids, in the following order. Thomas Houston (b: 1869), William Arthur, Rebecca Matilda, Mary Cordelia, Archie Calvin, Sarah Elizabeth, Ruby Neoma, Josephus, Josiah, Aaron Fitzgerald, and Nettie Mae (my g-grandmother) b: 1890. The father's grave is on findagrave.com and has 2 tombstones. I found civil war records for him, the 1860 census, 1870 census, 1880 census. Arch's family is listed on the same page as his father's family in the 1880 census, as are James' parents, George Washington Archibald Roden and Rebecca Narciss Nations. Arch's tombstone is also on findagrave.com. While I have many pictures of Nettie, I have not come across any of her siblings or parents. Sorry. If you are related to Arch, then you are also related to Peggy (the writer of the previous message) and to myself.

You are correct! We are related. William and Nettie were siblings, Nettie did live and die in Albq. However, they didn't move there until between 1938-1943. Her husband died in 1938. He is buried in Estancia, so they must have lived there at that time. Nettie had 7 kids, one of which was my grandmother, Vivian. I remember Nettie well. We called her "Little Old Grandma". I don't recall any of her siblings. My mom might remember them though. Peggy, I actually have you in my tree. I would love to compare research with you.
I show in a book that I have, that Arch Calvin was the fifth child of James C. & Nancy Smith Roden. I show him born October 27, 1879 in Sevier County Arkansas, and that he died in 1956, and buried in Gillham Cemetery, Gillham Arkansas, and that he married Naomi J Carter and that she was born in 1884, died in 1961, and is also buried in Gillham, Arkansas. I don't know if any of this helps. I show they had seven children. I don't swear any of this is correct, but it is in a book that I have. But, he also had a sister named Ruby Neoma, I believe. I show their first child was born January 5, 1905, but again I don't know how much of this is correct. There is

I don't know the information you are asking for, but I do know that a Nettie Roden Richardson lived in Albuquerque, NM and I visited her several times. I believe my grandfather, William Arthur Roden and Nettie Roden Richardson were siblings. I show in a book I have that Nettie was married to Reginald Richardson. She had eight children, and I met a couple of them in Albuquerque, NM.

My grandfather was William Arthur Roden, for sure. My dad's name was Walker A. Rhoden (they later added the "h"), for sure. My grandmother was Maggie Brewer Roden, for sure.

There were three Rodens who married three Brewer girls.

I thought I saw her headstone in Broken Bow, Oklahoma recently. I seemed to also have found it on Findagrave.com. This is not for sure, but I think I am right.

My e-mail address is pgroachx@aol.com, if you want to contact me directly.

By the way, one of the children of Ruel is spelled Harvis. I'm not sure of Darrill's spelling, but the others are correct.

I would love to know what all you have back to 1518.

I am hoping some kind soul can locate for me the marriage of William Reginald Richardson and Nettie Mae Roden in 1908 in Arkansas. Could be in Mena (Polk Co.) or in Sevier Co. where they are in the 1910 census. Nettie's parents were James Calvin Roden and Nancy Elizabeth Smith. However, William's parents are only guessed to be George and Vivian (nee Biggs). I am hoping the marriage info will provide important clues about William's parents. I can't find a good match for him in 1900 census. William is born in Texas 1887. His father is from England and his mother from Texas. William would be about 20 years old, and Nettie about 17 at the time of their marriage. If anyone can find a license or a newspaper clipping I would be very appreciative!

Olive's parents were: Elias Sweet FARRAR (1816-1868) and his wife Candace Case BAILEY Farrar (1824-1869). Please ask around- THANKS!

FNU Roden married Mary Johns SC 1700s

Seeking to identify the Roden that married Mary Johns possibly in Chester Co circa 1750-60. Known children Jacob, John and Elizabeth all of whom migrated to GA in the early 1800s. Jacob married Polly LNU. Elizabeth married William Dowling.

Many researchers have their father as either the William that married Mary Mayfield or the William that married Mary Reynolds. We do not believe that is accurate.

Appreciate any leads. Thank you. Cheryl Rhoden

The Rodens of Alabama were primarily descendants of the Rodens of Chester Co SC. Their ancestor was Eszekiah Raughton who came to Jamestown aboard the Bona Nova in 1619.
Some believe he was the son of Sir William Wroughton of England. I have not researched that myself.

The 'h' was added in the mid 1830s to the name by the Rhodens of GA and FL. There is a Roden Cemetery in DeKalb AL. The enumeration is online.

An excellent resource is the Roden Chronologues by Mildred Founier - available online. The name had numerous spellings.
best regards, Cheryl Rhoden

The name was also spelled Rhoden on some documents (as well as various other spellings).

In particular, I'm trying to figure out which one John and Jacob Roden/Rhoden descended from. John and Jacob both migrated to GA in the early 1800s.

Thank you, Cheryl Rhoden

I am a descendant of a William Roden of Longford He Settled in St Ives Cambs and had 10 children. one of them named william married my Great Grandmother and my grandmother elizabeth was one of their children.Elizabeth married an Edwin Sayer and they had two girls my mother doreen being the eldest. The original William Roden came from longford during the 1840,s as he is on the census of St Ives in 1851 as living with we presume is a sister. Does any of this mean anything to anyone?

Sue, The spellings of the names you have Roten, Wroten are the various spellings of the name that descends of Eszikhia (sp?) Raughton. I didn't see those names on your link.

I suggest you look at the 'Roden Chronologue' just google it and "Rodenstate" google that too... both have a lot of documentation.

The name was spelled six ways into Sunday. I guess mostly because no one could spell. But they both have so much documentation that you can figure out a lot of links.

Do you know where in SC your Rotens were? The documentation I've been working on is in Chester/Craven Co in the mid to late 1700s. And, into the early 1800s. Most of those documents in the SC archives have the name spelled Roden (tho there is one or so with it spelled Rhoden).

And, are you sure of the spellings in documents to your SC links? I just love this stuff. all best, cheryl rhoden (the only way I know how to spell my name)

I'm trying to trace my line back to Ezekiah. A cousin and I have been working at it for years, so far our line seems to be: Henry Roten, William Roten(Rev) b. 1775, Thomas E. Roten b. 1799 So Carolina, Edward Wesley Roten b. 1835 Pike Co., Mississippi, Walter Thompson Wroten b. 1884, Cary Bernard Wroten b. July 1, 1920
You can see any siblings we have and wives at: http://havingfun.tribalpages.com
Sue www.oceanhose.com

Hi Paul, I'm no longer on ancestry.com so I don't think I can do that. And, I just have to say that a lot of the trees on ancestry are just not documented. Not that your tree isn't. Sheesh, there's one that has 200 years between the mother and the birth of the son.

I'm currently working on totally documenting the link between James J. Rhoden and the William Roden m Mary Mayfield of Chester. Supposedly, James J. was the son of Jacob Roden/Rhoden (have found the name spelled both ways in the GA census) ,, and Jacob was the son of William of Chester. There were several Williams. I just haven't been able to nail this yet.

The Alabama Rodens definitely link up to one of the Williams in Chester. I found a POA for them. They were in Blount Co at that time and it was for the sale of some of the properties in Chester/Craven Cos SC.

So, thanks for your response. Let's keep talking if you like. best, cheryl rhoden
