Esther Rodenbach/Hetty Rodenbaugh of PA, b. 1828?

Hello,

Can anyone help link in my Rodenbach/Rodenbaugh ggg-grandmother with an existing line?

I am looking for any information on an Esther "Hetty" Rodenbach/Rodenbaugh, born around 1828 in PA. I have her in the 1850 USFC living in Williams Township, Northampton County, PA; 1860 in Greenwich Township, Warren County, NJ; and 1870 in Durham Township, Bucks County, PA.

In 1850 she is living with (presumably) her widowed mother, Elizabeth _________ Rodenbaugh, born around 1788 in PA. They are living adjacent to (presumably) her brother William (born around 1818), his wife Diana, and their daughter Elizabeth. Unsure of any other possible siblings, but based on the age gap, there were likely more.

She married Samuel Leidy in the early 1850s; he's another mystery (cannot link to ANY of the multitude of local Leidys, but that's for another post). They lived across the border in NJ for some time, and while there Samuel served in a NJ regiment during the Civil War. "Esther, wife of Samuel Leidy" is buried beside him in a Riegelsville cemetery, but no last name or dates.

The Rodenbach name/spelling was relayed to my grandmother by her aunt, who was Hetty's granddaughter. From census records it seems likely that Rodenbaugh may have been the spelling in use, though those transcriptions were frequently guesswork.

Another oddity I ought to add -- in 1870, an 89-year-old boarder named John Radabach is listed in the Samuel Leidy household. I have been unable to turn up records of him elsewhere, but find it hard to believe he was not a relative of some description.

Apologies for the jumble, and I appreciate any information you might be able to share.

Thanks,

Amanda

Cora M Rhodenbaugh (various spellings) b. 1874 Springfield twp, Summit Co, Ohio
Parents are Charles Rhodenbaugh b. 1845 Summit Co, OH and Lydia Lydia Kimmel b. 30 Jul 1847 Lake twp, Stark Co, Ohio.
Parents of Charles are:
Isaac Rhodenbaugh (again various spellings) b. 1816 PA and
Sarah Atchison b. 1825 Ohio marriage date: 05 Jan 1841 Summit County, Ohio
Parents of Isaac were:
Peter Rhodenbaugh b bet 1774-1780 in PA and Betsy Hornbeck b 1785-1795 PA
The spellings change many times. I believe it has to do with the guy writing what the writer hears. So, I am not at all sure what spellings the actual people used, because as I go through the records the spelling is all over the place.
Faith

I am not related to RODENBACH families, but I have posted an old photo of a Cora Rodenbach at my GoogleBase account if anyone is interested ... it appears to have been taken in the late 1800s or very early 1900s in Akron, OHIO . I rescued the photo from an antique store.
This is the link to the photo ... http://base.google.com/base/a/1290825/D15628071989835604676

Ginger Evans

I just read one of your previous messages about a Mary Schofield Phinney. Am curious what her relationship to the Schofield name might be. My great, grandfather was born in the Rochester, NY area and left there going to Cinncinati and apparently, following the Civil War, moved to Carroll county Missouri where he married Margaret Darrah, daughter of John Darrah and Susannah Roller Anderson. Among the descendents of Henry Schofield and Margaret were the following: Daniel Henry, Darrah, Helen, Lena and several other children. Among my various papers I have more information on the family.
But it is interesting to find the surname Schofield among the family names you list as well as your connection to the Richey family of Saline County Illinois of whom I am a descendent also. I have to presume that those of us who have ancestors who date back to the early settlement of America, will find we have some connection.
My husband's father's family, Castle, settled in the Alexander/Pulaski/Union counties area in Illinois in the early 1800's --- approximately the same time as some of my Richey/Black/Wroton/Miller/Harris/Turner ancestors were moving into the areas of Gallatin (later part of that became Saline) and Williamson counties in southeastern Illinois.

I've been scanning the Radabaugh postings now and then.

Just a reminder to this group -- I did a genealogy about 10 years ago that had a large (70 page) appendix devoted to all of the Rodenbach/Rodabaugh/Radenbaugh/Radabaugh (the R*d/t*b*ck/ch cognates) lines in the U.S. The genealogy is on the web, but the Appendix is only in the print version. Copies of this genealogy are still available. It is described at http://www.sheridanc.on.ca/~kem/Htmlgen/ctnrodad.htm.
Several lines used the Rodenbach spelling, especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

Rebecca,
During a recent search I read your posting on the Rodenbachs and wondered if you could help me find information on Isaiah Rhodenbaugh. Perhaps you could check George Rodenbach's book, if there is something, I would be interested in getting a copy. Could you email me the title. Thank you in advance for your help. Below is a little background that may be helpful.

I have been able, through Ancestry.com census records and other sources, to trace my Rhodenbaugh branch to Isaiah Rhodenbaugh, born in Pennsylvania ca. 1820. He and a brother, John Rhodenbaugh, moved to Mercer Co. Illinois around 1838 (John married Polly Arrasmith there, Isaiah married Mary Jane Metzler, if that is any help). I have a few possibilities in Pennsylvania, but nothing that I can use to link Isaiah to anyone. It is likely that Rhodenbaugh is a variant of either Rodenbach or Rodenbough. One source claimed it was Rodenbough of Austrian descent, but no proof.
Thanks again. Best Wishes. Eric Rhodenbaugh.

Join us for an August 24-25, 2002 gathering in beautiful Lehigh County, Pennsylvania (1 hour north of Philadelphia). For “reunion” information or to see where you fit into the *rner family, visit Joe Erner’s website at www.geocities.com/~erner/gen/arner which documents the Arner/Aner family to the 1500s, or contact us through the Arner Listserv at ARNER-L@rootsweb.com. We’re planning two fun-filled days including a catered Pennsylvania Dutch luncheon and the dedication of a memorial stone in the Heidelberg Union Church cemetery to honor the immigrants. My father does not communicate by computer, he uses me. We have literally piles and piles of Rodenbach/Rodenbaugh (sp) materials that have been compiled in the research of our line. We very often can point people in the "right direction" regarding certain lines and if you would like please contact me directly at ksrex@ix.netcom.com with complete info regarding your earliest known ancestors, dates and known migration paths. Please include county and state where known.

Dear Rebecca,

After seeing your post, I would love to speak with you. My last name is a derivative of the Rodenbach name. I am still in the process of finding the connecting ancestors. Maybe you have the key.

Dear Rebecca,

I would be very interested to know if you have more information of your family tree....it appears that both the Rodabaugh and Rodenbach families immigrated from the Rheinland-Pfalz area of Germany to Pennsylvania. I speak German and, knowing that Rodabaugh is not the true German variant, decided to check the possible permutations...and Rodenbach appears to be one of two valid possibilities. Also, the Rodenbach family had some people who moved from PA to Ohio. My great great Grandfather was born in PA, but moved to OH and even married in Summit County, OH, which is where many of the Rodenbach family were. I hope to hear from you.
Tom Rodabaugh
