Jeff,
Ann H. Rodman was Ann Haden Oglesby Rodman, Hugh's mother, and the maternal aunt of Celia A.B. Reding (nee Attkisson), who was briefly married to Hugh. Hugh, his mother and his wife, Rebecca, moved to Keokuk County, Iowa, sometime after the death of Hugh's father, William. Ann Rodman died October 26, 1846, and is buried in Sorden Cemetery in Webster, Iowa, next to Rebecca, who died in 1856. Hugh appears to have wasted little time in returning to Salem and marrying his cousin at the end of 1856.

Much to my deep dismay, very few of the churches in Salem have extant records from that time period. Both my main research interest, Thomas Reding, and his father-in-law, Alexander Attkisson (Ann Rodman's brother-in-law), were very active in Salem's other major church, and those records were lost in a fire. Your best avenue of research would be to contact the Stephens Historical Museum in Salem and see if they have any information on the Presbyterian church records.

I would be INCREDIBLY interested if who has the old Rodman Bible. William Rodman was Thomas Reding's business partner and Reding carved his tombstone. I also strongly suspect Reding may have been related to the Rodmans, and that there may be more information in that Bible about family members.

Thanks!
Keith

Hi again Keith.

I have new information:
I show that Hugh Hurst Rodman, along with his brothers Joseph and James and one other girl I'm not familiar with by the name of Ann H. Rodman were all baptized on the same day as infants on 28 Jul 1821 at the Presbyterian Church at Salem, IN.

Would you happen to know if they have any researchers at the Presbyterian Church who would take a look at their records to see who the parents were during these baptisms?

I also have a line on the recipient of the old Rodman Bible cited by Edith Attkisson Rudder in My Father's Family. I'm hoping the researcher on that family line responds to me.

Let me know! Jeff

Jeff,
Sorry for the delay in answering. I am afraid I can't answer your question about William T. Rodman until the next time I go down to Salem Indiana. The Washington County Historical Society/Stephens Museum has a book on the Rodman family as well as an extensive clippings file. I have every faith William's father would be listed there.

I do know about Celia's 1860 Census listing. I actually can do a decent job of accounting for her movements up to that point, and then she disappears. Yes, the marriage was indeed a short one, but there is no record of any divorce I have discovered to date. Celia's first marriage was to a man named Thomas R. Reding, a gravestone carver about whom I wrote a history and have been researching for the last 30 years. Reding carved William T. Rodman's gravestones and was also his occasional business partner. Celia's maternal aunt married William Rodman.

Let me know if I can be of any additional assistance!

Sincerely,
Keith

I came across this email when trying to track a side bar of my family (a Helen Dunagan who married a Richard Rodman). Not sure if your Rodman's are related, but I know where you can get good info free - in an old Kingston newspapers. I made a family breakthrough here.
www.fultonhistory.com
The Kingston NY daily freeman is the paper you want. You may need to play around with different searches "James Richard Rodman" "James R Rodman", etc.
Good Luck
Jim

I am searching for descendants or anyone else who might have information on Hugh Hurst Rodman, born 3/5/1807 in Kentucky and died March 14, 1884. If there are any detailed histories which recount his movements between the death of his first wife, Rebecca Ballard Rodman, in 1856 in Keokuk, Iowa and his marriage to his third wife, Mary Ann Head Maddox in Vernon Co., Missouri in 1869, I would be very interested. Rodman married his cousin, Celia A.B. Attkisson Reding, in Salem, Indiana, in December of 1856, and she is the real subject of my research.

I would also appreciate any photographs of Hugh, of his wife, Mary, and any recollections or detailed information about Hugh's father, William T. Rodman (1783-1841). Thank you very much!

I'm trying to track down any information about Sarah Jane Doxsee, born 1828 in Watertown, Jefferson, New York to Archlaus Doxsee and Elizabeth Way. She married William Rudman/RodmanJune 7, 1853 in Reach, Ontario, Canada West.
I've accounted for their children after the marriage BUT there's a very good possibility that she had a male child out-of-wedlock. A child, George Dennis, later adopted by the Benjamin and Nancy Tibbets family. George Dennis Tibbits is my gggrandfather on my father's mother's side.
This has been a mystery to our family for years and it is only recently that Sarah Jane Rodman was idenified as a strong biological mother to George Dennis. The name Sarah Rodman appears on his baptism certificate years later when baptized a Catholic prior to his marriage.
Any information about Sarah would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Mike Reilly

Hello -
I am a direct descendant of William Rotch (and Charles W. Morgan) and would love to have copies of the silhouettes you mentioned. Your posting mentioned William Rotch, Wm. Rotch, Jr., Samuel Rodman & his wife Elizabeth and their kids, Samuel, Eliza, William and Sarah. If they are still available, please let me know the best way to obtain copies. Thank you,
Edward Buxton
imageworksinc@yahoo.com

Re: Abel Thatcher and Delilah Elizabeth Woodcock Rodman

Randi,
Abel and Delilah were my gr. gr. grandparents. Their last child was my gr. grandmother Indiana Lewrhetta Didona RODMAN HORN FOUST.
I believe that Eleanor Jenson was actually Eleanor or Ellen Johnson. I found her obituary in the Kokomo Daily Dispatch on Wed. March 16, 1892 and the Kokomo Gazette Tribune on Wed evening March 16, 1892. In both articles it stated she died at the home of her son-in-law Abel Rodman. She was 93 at the time of her death. The obituary said she was buried in Crown Point cemetary. I went to Crown Point to look at her grave and was told that she was buried in the pauper section.
A lot of Abel and Delilah's children put on their marriage applications that Delilah's maiden name was Johnson. So finding Ellen's obituary explained why they did that. Kids would presume that their Mother's maiden name would be grandma's last name. But on Abel and Delilah's marriage license it says her last name was Woodcock when they married and on her death record it states that her father was Isaac Woodcock and her mother Ellen Wheeler.
I hope this helps.
Jackie

After reviewing the family tree you set up, I realize I was wrong in my assumption about how we are related. I now believe that your paternal grandfather was the brother of my maternal great-grandfather, Cassel Rodman, not the son, as I had previously posted. (They had the same name). It looks like we are related as descendents of Mordecai Rodman and his first wife. Cassel Rodman had five children. His daughter, Mae, was my grandmother.

I am the daughter of Theodore Rodman, brother of Edgar (Uncle Eddie) Rodman. Albinis was my grandfather.
I too have always been curious about my relatives. Seems that we are all cousins.
My father was born in 1906, and he, Uncle Eddie, Uncle Wilburn, and Uncle Gilbert all served in WW2. There were other siblings too. Vernie (deceased), John (deceased), Leroy, (deceased), Melvin, (deceased), Russell, (living), Cordelia Rodman Davis, Ruth Rodman Sullivan, Violet Rodman Duncan, and Bessie Rodman Litrell. I believe all of the sisters are deceased, and I apologize if I have left any out.

Hi, Lori. Sorry I lost touch with you and your mom. I didn't know how to find you. As for your question about my grandmother Alice Mae Taylor (Rodman), she did have indeed have children with my grandfather Thomas Shackelford. The oldest was Willie Corinne, the next was my mother Minnie Irene and the youngest and last was Thomas Little Frank, all deceased. I can't get passed Alec T Rodman, but just a couple of days ago I found Mary E Rodman (William)'s parents and grandparents. Mary's father is PERSON WILEY WILLIAMS (1812 - 1878) and Mary's mother was NANCY JANE MCDANIEL (1812 - 1880). Person's father was STEPHEN WILLIAMS (1785 - 1860). Stephen's wife was POLLY STANDFORD (1787 - (1850 - 1860). She was born in Orange County, NC probably. Person was born in Orange County, NC.

Let me hear from you when you get a chance. AL Sanford

Hello again,

Just to let you know, the book I used is

History of Livingston County, New York: with illustrations and biographical sketches of some of its prominent men and pioneers (Syracuse, N.Y.: D. Mason, 1881), pp.352-53 (with a picture in between the pages). I found the book on HeritageQuest.

The granddaughter's writing about her Magee family is here:

http://www.ancientfaces.com/research/photo/387616

Sarah L. Magee was the unmarried daughter of Charles Magee, son of William and Hannah (Quick) Magee. The lady who submitted the picture and Sarah's account is a distant relative of mine. I actually just found this website myself.

You can see how Sarah was speaking of her uncles and then uncles of possibly a niece or nephew. I think the key to understanding "All the sisters Aunt Julia, Sally Betsey and Rebecca" is Rebecca. The Rebecca of William and Hannah's family didn't marry and died in her 50's (I just saw her grave right next to her parents). Of course, the fourth sister that Sarah does not seem to mention was Elizabeth (Ewart), which makes you wonder if her real name was Sarah Elizabeth (Sally Betsey), but in the couple census records she is in, she is called Elizabeth.

By the way, in case any of this is new, this is what I can say about the six Magee children of William and Hannah born in NY:

They were Hugh, who married an Elizabeth and lived in Conesus; Elizabeth, who married Samuel Ewart and lived in Geneseo; Charles, who married Mary Paret and stayed in Groveland; Rebecca, who never married; Julia Ann, who married Darling Havens and lived in Sparta; and John C., who married Maryetta Patchin and lived around Groveland.

I hope this helps somehow!

Sue Ellen

Thank you for contacting me with this new information. I have not seen the source you quote for the name "Sallie Betsy," but the three daughters of Samuel Rodman (and his wife probably surnamed Magee), starting with the eldest, are Mary Ann, Elizabeth, and Sally Ann. Betsey is one of the diminutive names for "Elizabeth," so your suggestion does not surprise me and seems consistent with the names of the daughters, but I have no information to confirm or deny that it is correct.

Hello,

I just noticed your discussion, and just now I happen to be looking into the family of William Magee myself (I am related to a different daughter-in-law). Do you know the first name of Samuel Rodman's wife? Would be it something like Sally Betsey? According to a history of Livingston County book, William and Hannah Magee had four boys and four girls. The last six--Hugh, Elizabeth, Charles, Rebecca, Julia A., and John--were born in Livingston Co., NY. The book mentions nothing about the two oldest children, but you would assume that they were born in Sussex Co., NJ, where their parents were married. The son must have been Samuel, and from what a granddaughter wrote, there was an aunt named Sally Betsey (at least this seems to be what she was saying. Her talk is a bit hard to follow). She would have been the oldest daughter, the one who would have been born in NJ.

Sue Ellen Fealko
