156th Regiment, NYV - some POW deaths - William Roe

"Our friend, Wm. ROE, of B. Company, 156th Regiment, N. Y. V., who was taken prisoner at the battle of Cedar Creek, 1864, and placed in Saulsberry prison, has been paroled. He says no man, unless he has been similarly situated, can tell the amount of suffering Union men had to endure in the Saulsberry (hell) prison. He reports that Wm. HUTTON, James IRVINE, James ELMANDORF, and Hiram SCISM, all members of Com. B., as having died in prison."

Thanks for the information. I actually live in Canada not the US. My sister has been to England and has gotten copies of certificates while doing research on my Mothers side of the family. I will get her to order it for me. Thanks for the information.

They were married Jun quarter 1876 at Norwich reference 4b 276 - she was married as Vicker. You would ned to send for a copy of the marriage certificate to find out more about her. I note that you are in the US - do you know how to do this?

I had a look at your Roe's but could not find a connection with mine.
Unfortunately the Roe families on Ancestry seem to be connected but differ and I have found that trying to follow them, as with other family names, is a bit of a quagmire.
There are a lot of people researching these days who do not follow any rules whatsoever and grab hold of any similar name of about the same d ate. It is such a pity because it muddies the water.
My Elizabeth Mary T Roe (my great grandmother) married William Lewis Barnes in 1859 in Bath, Somerset. It seems strange because she came from Norwich to do so, and both her parents were still living in Norwich. Her aunt, Mary Ann, was a corsetiere in Bath at the time.

I have a Roe or Norwich, Norfolk in my family. My 2 times great grandfather was John Roe and his wife was Charlotte Vicker(s). Was able to trace back to George Roe born in 1830. Would love more information if you have any. Would really love to know more about Charlotte and why her childred carried her maiden name instead of the father? Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Ole is my grandmothers brother, and immigrated to US in 1894, travelling together with his uncle Lars J. Bauge (Louis J. Boyd).
He is registered as passenger arrived in Ellis Island 15 March 1894. In this file there are two numbers (16-9) written in the column for date and cause of death
This is the only information we can find by searching all available public files.
But my grandmother received a cristmas card from Ole with family many years after he left Norway.
We would very much appreciate if anybody have any information about Ole L Roe, his given name in Norway was Ole Nikolai Larsson

Thank you. Silas and Rosa are indeed my great grandparents. In addition to the two you listed, they had my grandfather, James Russell Roe Sr. He was born 8/12/1910. Married Rosalee Linton. They had 3 sons: (my father) James Russell Roe Jr, Edward Norton Roe, and Robert Montague Roe. My father married Peggy Lee Shaffer. They then had myself, Rose Marie Roe and my brother, James Russell Roe III. I married Arthur Jeffery Thompson and we have 5 children. Amanda Lynn Thompson, Britanny Nicole Thompson,Jeffrey Michael Thompson,Courtney Anne Thompson and Brandon Avery Thompson. Well that covers Silas' tree from my side.
I would love any other information on any Roe family genealogy you have. I am very interested in making this a thorough and going as far back as i can. Thank you again.

My father was Robert E Lee (Chip)Roe. I know he was born in Paige,Tx. in 1890 and died in 1951 when I was 3yrs old. I know the names of his brothers and sisters and I think his parents were David and Mary (don't know maiden name). He was a Southern Pacific Depot agent in McDade, Tx. When you click the link in the old message it will take you to their site - they have changed it since I first wrote. On the right side of the page click "go to previous site" (I used this way when I did it last and am not sure how to get there with this new site). Click advanced search next to the search button. Put in what info you have (less is more sometimes). Since it's been a year I can't remember what spelling or what info I plugged in - sorry. Hope this helps.

Here's what I have at the present time:

Silas Grant Roe was born 21 Jan 1859 in Frederick County, Virginia and died 1944 in Virginia.

He married Rosa D. Adams on 29 Mar 1900 in Frederick County, Virginia. She was born Feb 1877 in Virginia and
died before 1930. Her parents were Hiram Adams and Purline (maiden name unknown). (Virginia Marriages 1785-1940, source film number 31459, page 462.)

They had the following children:
1. Living Roe
2. Edward S. Roe born 1908, Virginia
3. Goldie A. Roe born about 1909, Virginia

Silas parents are Alexander Richard Roe and Alice Mariah "Eliza" Shuler. They were married 9 Mar 1851 in
Frederick County, Virginia. Alice is Richard's second wife.

RAlexander had several children from of his two marriages.

I am not aware of a Soloman in my line. I am only able to trace back to a marriage of William Roe to Bathsheba Catlett in 1843 in Virginia.

Samuel Roe

I am looking for Samuel Roe born in Louisianna in 1852 however on one census he lists his birth-place as Missouri. Samuel Roe's mother was Margaret (Ford) McDonald. She married John McDonald and had several children. She is listed in a book "The Founding of St Paul, Minn." and it states she had a child (Sam Roe) from a previous marriage. It appears that she met John McDonald in New Orleans and they moved to Hudson Wisconsin and then to ST. Paul. Sam Roe raised his family in Hudson Wisconsin.

Solomon Jefferson D. Rowe/Roe was born 1861 in Texas. (Some family trees show him being born in Mississippi, but he wasn't.) He died in 1940 in Texas. He was married to Lucy Jane Dorsett (sometimes seen as Dossett) - they married in Gregg county, TX.

I am looking for someone who might have a photo of him. I have so far found a photo of two of his sisters - Patience and Matilda. And I have a photo of his only brother John Joseph. (John was my gr-grandfather.) I don't want the actual photo, I am only asking for someone to please send me a scanned copy of it.

We are trying to get a reasonable idea as to what their father probably looked like. His father was Solomon Jefferson Rowe, born 1818 in Alabama; mother was Julia Ann Harper, born 1826 in South Carolina.

Hello My name is Linley Roe from Australia and I am looking for any information I can find on William Roe who married Martha Gilbert approx 1809. Martha Gilbert was born approx 1773 in Tamworth Staffordshire and William was born approx 1773 in Elford Staffordshire. I believe that they had 3 children Joseph born 1811, Sarah born 1814 and William born 1817 all Elford Staffordshire. Joseph traveled to Australia with his wife Janet Cummingham in 1848 with their 3 children Joseph H, Emanuel and William. I am a direct descendant of Joseph H who married Rhoda Alldridge in 1861 in Australia. They had 13 children, my Great Grandfather being one - Emanuel John. If anyone has any information I would be most appreciative. Or if you are looking for any information on the Australian side please let me know - I may be able to assist.

There were 2 unrelated Roe families in Nottingham in the 1800’s. My earliest Roe I can trace was Samuel born 1811 in Westminster London, moved to Nottm and worked as a Lace maker. I think you must be related to the other family – pity!

Hello my name is Linley Roe from Australia - I have traced the Roe family back to Notthinghamshire. My family is descented from Joseph H Roe born approx 1811 & Janet (cunningham)born 1808 they had 3 children Joseph H born 1839, Emanuel born 1842 and William born 1835. They came to Australia on a boat called Agincourt in 1848.

I am trying to find Joseph H Roe's parents and siblings if any. I have the names William Roe and Martha (unknown) as possible parents. Maybe Arthur W Roe is a sibling?

I dont think I'm related - I do have Roes in my family, my great granny was a Kate Roe from Dublin - and there were quite of few Roes in Dublin in the 1800s but I have her family's details back to her grandparents in the early 1800s and the only way I could be related is if her grandfather was a brother of your Bridgets father.... but that's for another day!!!

Albert Samuel Roe of Dayton, OH

I've hit a hard dead-end and was wondering if anyone has any information on Albert Samuel Roe, born 15 Aug 1850 in Dayton, Ohio (or so I believe, based on census and death records). It would seem that he lied on his Civil War enlistment record when he enlisted in 1864 in Springfield, Ohio, claiming he was 18 years of age when it would seem he was only 14. He had a injury during his training for the cavalry and was not enlisted for long, however, although he proudly proclaimed himself a veteran of the war and supported the veterans of the area according to his obituary. He did state on his enlistment papers that his parents were both deceased and that he had no legal guardian and that his occupation was that of a Farmer.

By 1871 he had moved to Berrien County, Michigan where he married Rose Belle Ripley. They had a farm near St. Joseph, Michigan where he was a fruit grower and he died there on 12 Oct 1928. His death certificate lists no information being known about his parents and I can find no other information about them or any possible siblings he may have had.

If anyone has any information on this line I would greatly appreciate any assistance you might be able to provide.

We are actively searching for descendants of Solomon Jefferson D. Roe, who was born in 1861 in Texas. Some family trees show him born in Panola County, Mississippi.

Solomon married Lucy Jane Dorsett and I know they had a son named Murph or Murphy, born 29 March 1888 in Longview, Gregg, TX; died 26 January 1956 in Harrison County, TX. (Some family trees show him dying in McLean County, but the TX death records show Harrison.)

Solomon J.D. Roe was the son of Solomon Jefferson Rowe, born 1818 in AL; and Julia Ann Harper, born 1826 in SC.

We are researching for new clues as to the identity of Solomon J.D.' grandfather - unknown Rowe. All we know about him is what S.J.D.'s father Solomon Jefferson Rowe/Roe said for census records, and that is that the man was born in NC.

Our hope is to locate as many living descendants of this line that we can to trade information and maybe finally solve this mystery.

I am the gr-granddaughter of John Joseph Rowe/Roe and Susan Ussery - this is my connection.

I am hoping this message thread is still active. My g-g-grandfather was Solomon Rowe, born 1818 in Alabama. We have tried every possible avenue to identify his parents, or at least father, with no luck. We have been told it was Asa (not him), William (not him), and several other names. After researching each lead we get, it becomes very obvious they are not the father. We lean toward it being a John Rowe - which one is a huge question.

What caught my attention to this thread is that the first person who posted has the last name of HUFF. My great uncle John Merriweather ROE married Althea Edora HUFF.

Solomon left AL in about 1855 +/- and ended up in Texas. The family was located in Upshur and Harrison Counties mostly, and then later on they spread down to Hamilton and Mills County. The family also changed the spelling from ROWE to ROE when they got to TX - why, we don't know.

All the Roe's who were in the Mills and Hamilton county area are related to me, but we are still at a brick wall in finding that elusive father.

I do hope to hear from someone who posted to this thread, or might possibly be related - we need help! lol

My gr-gr-grandfather was Solomon Rowe, born 18 September 1818 in what later became Talladega County. He married Julia Ann Harper on December 18, 1844 in Talladega Cty.

We know nothing about his parents, and we are currently working on trying to find them. The only clues we have currently is the name Solomon gave his first son - John Joseph Rowe. We know the Joseph was for Julia's father, so we are assuming John was for the paternal grandfather.

Do you have dates to go with your Rowe's? This might help some.

We know we definitely connect to several of the other Rowe families there, and we have found 2 brothers for Solomon so far, and possibly sisters.
