Hi Cindy

I only have subscription to the UK and Australian Records however have access to the world through my local library.

As far as I have been able to find my branch is not related to the branch from Dorset however I do know that there was a Benjamin Rolls who came to Australia from Dorset who was a confectioner. I came across this information about 16 years ago when I first started my research but didn't follow it any further as I had no evidence that they were related to my family. I believe he may have settled in Adelaide.

I have one member of my family tree who went to Canada in the early 1900's however at the outbreak of war he took his family back to England.

My family are from Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, Kent, Northamptonshire and as I recently found, Yorkshire. Who knows, I may eventually find that I am related to the Rolls' from Dorset after all.

Kylie

Hi Kylie, The Benj who went to Australia in our family is the son of Benjamin Rolls, mother unknown, and grandson of Benjamin and Mary Adams. All come from Weymouth in Dorset. We have about 7-8 Benj's in the family.
I also have a Maria Isabella Sims who married James Arnold Rolls and they came to Canada, where I live, with 3 other brothers in 1831, Again in weymouth.
BUT(smiley face with question mark, I dont know how to do emotionalgrams) My grandfather Alison ROlls's was working on the tree in the 40's, he would have gotten information through cousins and family back in England, indicted his grandfather again a James Arnold Rolls who married a widow named MArgaret Burns @1803, had 'Benjamin who went to Australia' with no information.
Also I have some information on the Sims family regarding Maria Isabella Sims, SHe was Episciplian her brother a Rev. she ws bornin 1812 in England.Apparently her family was displaced Scottish lineage of the house of Bucclaugh. It is written up on the internet. They were in England. One of her brothers was Alfred who apparently was in med school training in England and died of Typhoid fever. If you want more info on these Sims I have info coming up to present. Some came to Canada.
Do you have the world subscription to Ancestry? I have found a number of Bens in Australia that I do not think are mine, But it is hard to know. If you do a search on the Card CAtalogue and use the filters you may find something useful.
If you dont know how to use that let me know and I can tell you or call the ancestry they are extremely good.
Please let me know if this info helps. Its so exciting to find people, even if they are not related.
Good Luck
Cindy

Hi Cindy

I am not really sure if, or how our trees are related.

I am the GG grand daughter of Benjamin Rolls born in Kent in 1848 who died in North Melbourne, Vic, Australia in 1933. He is the son of Thomas Rolls b Fen Stanton, Hunts in 1817 died Kent 1882 and Harriett Blackman b kent 1819 died Kent 1885.

Thomas Rolls had a brother James Rolls who was born in 1830 and a sister Lydia who married an Alfred Sims, however I have not done any research on them at all. Perhaps this is the James you refer to?

My Benjamin had a brother James ThomasRolls b 1856 Kent, d1921 in Northamptonshire. He was married to a Mary Callis. I know he travelled as he was the Butler to the Prime Minister of England at one time however he never moved to Canada.

I do not have a Benjamin on my family tree who died in 1884 however there are gaps in my tree.

Who is your Benjamin's father? The parents of my James Rolls are William Rolls 1792-1851 and Lydia Rennum 1796-1877, They may have had another brother that I know nothing about. Thomas and Harriet seemed to name their children after other members of the family and I have not been able to account for who Benjamin is named after so maybe the Benjamin you speak of is in some way related.

You have just opened up a whole new can of worms for me!

It just so happens that I am meeting some English relatives this weekend from another branch of my tree. I will ask them if they know anything of the people you speak of.

Regards

Kylie

Hi Kylie, I am related to James Arnold Rolls and Margaret Burns, they are also related to Benjamin Rolls, we live in Canada James Arnold and Isabella Sims and some other brothers emigrated to Canada in 1834. We are working on the tree and have found out a lot of information for Martha Matilda Rolls through Joanna Michiels in England. You are, I think the 'Benjamin who went to Australia' on the tree. He had a father who died in @ 1876 in England.
I am anxious to talk to you, I have a copy of Bens death certificate dd 1884 but the copy is very poor and hard to read that I have downloaded it.
Please get in touch
cindyc_cc@yahoo.com
Thanks Cindy Cameron

I have transcripts of some letters sent by James Mounsher Rolls to cousins/siblings in England, many of whom also immigrated to Tasmania and Victoria. I would be more than pleased to forward this on to you.
Hi Anthea,

Not sure if you will get this as you posted so long ago, but I am also descended from John Jenkins Rolls via his daughter Martha Matilda Rolls who moved to Tasmania, Australia. I am now in London, so as you can see, some of the family came back!!

Any help you can give me would be great.

Best wishes

Joanna Michiels

Rolls families

Hello I just started tracing back my family. I know that my Great-Great-Great grandmother was Margaret L. Rolls (1847-1927) and she married Henry Blend(1843-1861). Margarets parents were Eli Rolls(1808-1852) and Nancy Tingley(1807-1887). I believe Eli Rolls fahter was James Rolls(1782-1860) and his mother was Esther Mill(1784-1860). Now I know that James Rolls was born in Farnborough, Kent, England and he came to the US. If anyone has any info on James Rolls and his parents would you mind sharing. lol. Thanxs.

Re: James Mounsher Rolls

Hello fellow Aussie descendants of James Mounsher Rolls - he was my grandfathers grandfather (my granfather was also James Mouncher Rolls - lived off a road now called Rolls Road north of Corowa, NSW, near Rand, and originally farmed together with his brother Henry Rolls, who served in WW1). I have been to St. Pauls in Deptford, where 1807 James was christened; unfortunately, I was new to the ancestor searching game and there on work, so didn't have time to look for any records, but it was still great to absorb the atmosphere. I intend to go back (in a year or two) to try to follow back the actual records - I am keen to know the "provenance" of some of the information on line now.

My father's research confirms a lot of what you have said about the Aussie end of the tree, and I am trying to work back up the line in the English roots. Are the details you have quoted from physical records (or even digital copies of physical records)?

It seems to have been a long while since anything was posted?

Regards

Chris Rolls

Rose A. ROLLS Cousins 1920-2006

Rose Agnes Rolls Cousins, 86, formerly of Fairmont, departed this life Sunday (July 30, 2006) at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

On March 26, 1920, in Fairmont, the daughter of Ann Alberta Rolls (nee Thornton) and, Theodore Emory Rolls Sr. They named her Rose Agnes in honor of both grandmothers. She joined an older brother, T. Emory Jr.

At Dunbar High School, Rose Agnes was active in many school organizations and school athletics. Her academic ability allowed her to graduate from high school and begin college at age 16.

At West Virginia State College in Institute, Rose was active as a varsity cheerleader, acting in and directing school plays with the drama department, and learning to fly airplanes in the Civilian Pilot's Training Program.

Rose was the only young lady among eight male trainees and made history by becoming the first African American female to receive her pilot's license with this program administered by the Civil Aeronautics Authority. Some of her fellow male trainees went on to form the original nine Tuskegee Airmen.

She received her bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1940.

While in college, Rose met Theodore W. Cousins from Montclair, N.J., and they were married on Dec. 31, 1941.

Before that union ended in 1969, two daughters were born, Emorene Nicole (Nikki) and Adrianne Michele.

Although she was equipped with a college degree, Rose could not find related employment because of her race. She taught algebra at Dunbar High School and Bible School in Marion County before being hired as a secretary for a city director, becoming the first African American to hold such a position in city government in Fairmont.

In the mid 1950's, she was hired by the Monongahela Valley Association of Health Centers (Fairmont Clinic) where she became director of medical records, a position she held until her retirement in 1999.

During her life, Rose was active in politics and was a past member of the Marion County Democrat Women. She was a lifetime member of the NAACP and a civil rights activist, especially regarding employment of qualified African Americans.

In addition, she was an actress and director of plays with the Marion County Little Theater and the Fairmont State College Summer Theater, and was a member of the American Medical Records Association; Soroptimist International, and West Virginia Aeronautics Association.

Her most treasured affiliation was honorary membership in the Tuskegee Airmen Inc.

For several years, Rose was an adjunct lecturer and business education instructor at Fairmont State College.

Having a tireless spirit and energy to burn, Rose was in constant motion, at work and at play. She was an inspiration to her family and to everyone with whom she came into contact. She loved to help young women move up in their careers and in their lives.

Many cherished moments were spent with her grandchildren and great-grandson.

Her spiritual training began as a child at Trinity United Methodist Church in Fairmont where she was a member until she transferred her membership to Christ Episcopal Church.

Ms. Cousins is survived by two devoted daughters and their spouses, E. Nikki and Bob Davis of Youngstown, Ohio, and A. Michele and Bob Moore of Washington, DC; four granddaughters, Stacy and Robin Davis, both of Charlotte, N.C., Adrianne Moore of Temple Hills, Md., and Courtney Moore of Washington, D.C.; one cherished great-grandson, Christopher Michael Thomas of Temple Hills, Md.; her birthday mate/ cousin/niece, Judy Lampkin Bussey and her husband De'Andrea Bussey of Fairmont, and their son, Grant of Martinsburg, West Virginia; several cousins, including Paul Nelson Jr. and Roderick Jones, both of Fairmont.

In addition to her parents, Rose was preceded in death by her brother, T. Emory Rolls Jr.; and a granddaughter, Kristen Lea Davis.

The family will receive visitors at the Morning Star Baptist Church, 100 McKinney St. Fairmont, Sunday from 3-9 p.m. Services to celebrate her life and going home will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church, 405 9th St., Fairmont, with Father Steve Swift officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.

The family plans to make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association and would be grateful for others to make the same gesture.

Arrangements are entrusted to the JG Lampkin Funeral Home in Fairmont.

Courtesy Post in honor of her memory.

My mom used to have afternoon tea with her. I don't know anything about a Reuben. I just know Hannah Mariah had family move to America before her and some did not survive it. I will look into Reuben. I thought Jethro's family stayed in England and he was the only one here. I never knew what her maiden name was. Thanks!

Lafayette (June 1885) and Thomas (Feb 1888) Rolls were living with Pete and Mathilda Rolls in 1900 and 1910. Based on their ages, they were born prior to Pete's marriage to Mathilda Poole. Are these the missing 2?

Lafayette (June 1885) and Thomas (Feb 1888) Rolls were living with Pete and Mathilda Rolls in 1900 and 1910. Based on their ages, they were born prior to Pete's marriage to Mathilda Poole. Are these the missing 2?

Hi,

I am trying to find any info on my g-grandpa, Robert Rolls. The only info I have on him is that he was born in Arkansas and died between 1896 and 1900. He married Margaret Cordelia McDonald in Pope Co. AR in 1893.

They had 3 children, my grandmother Florence, James, and Earl.

I don't know his middle name, family members to do a census search on, nothing. If anyone knows anything about this Rolls line, please contact me! I have reached the end of the line in what I can think of to do to find out more about him.

Thanks,

Janet Easley Cottrill
