My Grandmother on my father's side is Romain, and we're from Nova Scotia....Acadians actually...common traits are dark skin, dark hair, all colors of eyes, but my grandmother believes our ancestors came from Italy, though I'm not sure when and neither is she, my family has been living in the community of Clare, NS (which is a large Acadian french community with multiple villages within)For over 200+ years...there's a lot of Mi'kmaq within our blood line as well. Some in our family spell it Romain, and some spell it Romaine...but we're all the same family. :)

Margaret Minthorne Romain

I have the image of the last will & testament of Margaret Minthorne Romain, widow of Nicholas Romain4. They resided on her portion of the Minthorne farm located on the NE corner of the Bowery (Dutch for farm) & E. Houston intersection. Specifically, her portion included the current Extra Place between E. 1st & E. 2nd streets. The entire farm consisted of the land between the Bowery & 2nd Avenue and from Houston St. to present-day E. 5th St. She was the niece & daughter-in-law of Sara Minthorne Romain, widow of Samuel Romain3 (Claes Jansen2, Jan1). Samuel's line is not well known. The Dutch genealogist, Herbert Ackerman, had pieces of it but didn't make the connections.

In Margaret's will, she names her chidren in what I believe is chronological order as the first 4 have already taken possession of portions of her land. They are Hannah, Samuel, Phillip, Sarah, Nicholas and Margaret.

In the 1790 census, they were recorded as Remin and thereafter as Romain/e.
The closest I can come to the person you are looking for is the daughter of Celine Gervais and William Joseph Romain or Roman. Celine was his first wife. She had 3 children. One of them was called Soly but could have had another name also. She married Basil Moiser or Moiner. After Celine died William married my G.G.
I need help on this too, if someone can email please!!

From the Montréal (Basilique Notre-Dame) records in 1822 when Augustin married Adelaide Brisebois, Agustin was from that parish and so was their parents. Augustin was a voyageur, atleast 18yrs old when married, and both his parents were dead at the time. Adelaide was from Fort Coulonge and Born in St Genevieve (Pierrefonds).

I wont be adding Andre Romain to my tree until I find more information. It is interesting to note that Marie Picard's father's name was Augustin.

Romain - Manhattan Brooklyn New York Circa 1880

I have some "Roman's" in my family line. How they spelled their name and how others spelled the name in official records seems to be giving me grief in researching this family line. My great grandmother was born in Manhattan, New York City, on November 20, 1879. Her parents were Joseph and Frances. I have seen Frances' maiden spelled 5 different ways to the point where none of them are traceable for me at this point. Let's just say it starts with an "L". It would appear that they had other children too including Joseph, John and Rosa. Did they have more children? I have not found any yet but that doesn't mean anything. I am slowing creeping along now tracing this line in which I had previously hit a brick wall. Mary Rohman's husband was Francis Joseph McGuire and they married in 1903. If anyone has any thoughts or information, that would be wonderful. Again, the spelling of the this surname is throwing me off and continues to do so. Thanks.

No, nearly as I can tell, Frank came alone. Via www.Geneanet it seems he came from Loudrefing, Moselle, Lorraine FRANCE (it was German). You might want to try the Alsace-Lorraine Message board as that is how I got a hit on Frank (family lore had him from that area though so it provided a good lead).

In fact, Frank is listed as Francois and listed as female on geneanet.org. I am still pursuing additional research on this branch of the Romains.

I'll keep my eyes and ears open just in case I see a Victor. Good Luck.

Hello;

I am looking for documentation for the same family line. It appears there is a discrepency about whether Andre's name is Andre or whether his name was Adam. If you have any documentation as to his name being registered or documented as Andre Adam Romain, I would be interested. Any help provided would be deeply appreciated.

Kindest Regards,

Margret Larochelle

Frank Romain, New Jersey/Philadelphia

Recently obtained a marriage cert for this ggfather.
Frank Romain was married in Camden, NJ to Annie Gray in August, 1893.
He was 37 (DOB 1856) and she was 22.
HIS father's name was also Frank Romain, and the son reported (on the marriage cert) that his father came from France. Frank JR's mother was reported to be born in the US and her name was Margaret Fisher. Can therefore speculate that Frank SR married Margaret here in the States, probably NJ or Philadelphia BUT!!!Frank JR reported on the 1900 NJ Camden census that he (Frank JR) was born in Louisiana.

Anyhoo, doos this sound like a link to anyone? Frank JR & Annie had several children who died in infancy, but at least one survived, my grandmother. It is known that Frank Romain JR was alive at least until 1906.
Suspect that Annie Gray may have died in the House of Corrections early 1900's.

Thank you in advance if anyone can share info on this long shot. :-)
Les

Re: Franciscus "Frank" Romain born 1840 to IL to ID

After my visit to Illinois in February 2009 I've picked up some new knowledge:
I still don't know why Frank Romain ended up in Lively Grove, IL but at St Anthony's Catholic Church he married Maria "Mary" Buescher 24 Apr 1876 (about 5 years after he arrived via the Port of New York). From the church records, it shows his parents as Francisci Xaverii Romain and Margaretha PIERLOT. Witnesses were Elis Buescher and Bernard Pagenkemp.

Frank was a contributor to the Propagation of the Faith and sent his annual contributions to New York City.

Frank and Mary had 2 girls and a boy that died before they moved in late summer 1888 to Keuterville, Idaho as well as John, Dominic, Frederick and Anna (Annie). One of the girls was adopted.

Per the 1920 census, it says Frank was naturalized in 1890 (I presume in Idaho) but I can't find his naturalization record anywhere.

Mary died in late 1888. She was the daughter of Johannes Gerhard Buescher 1812-1888 of Wash/St Clair County IL and Maria Eliz Rickelmann Buescher 1817-1892, both originally from Hannover. I know there are Bueschers in Idaho County that originally came from Effingham County, IL. I don't know if they are related to the Bueschers of Wash/St Clair County.

At St Anthony's and St Liborius Churches at Lively Grove and St Libory IL I found more names that could be shared between, Oldenburg, the Effingham area, Washington/St Clair County area and Idaho/Washington/Oregon. It dawned on me as I was reading through the histories of the churches, in particular of the Catholic church at St Libory, that the Catholics must have sent the german Catholics out from Teutopolis, IL to start various communities within the area. I think that is why there were also Jansens and Bueschers and Bosses and Albers and Luechtefelds and Behrmanns that are in all of these communities. If my theory is correct, I would like to figure out the timing of it all.

Frank died in 1925 and spent much of his later years with his daughter Annie. Frank's son Frederick married Josepha Kaufmann in 1908 and they homesteaded to Montana in 1913.

Thank you,

Angela Romain in Phoenix, AZ

Franciscus "Frank" Romain born 1840 to IL to ID

Frank came via ship from LeHavre in 1871 and ended up in Lively Grove, Illinois. He married Mary Buescher and they had 6 children. The 1880 census shows Frank, John and adopted daughter Annie. Later in the 1880s they would have Dominic, Anna and Fred.

In 1888 they moved to Keuterville, Idaho with John, Dominic, Anna and Fred (we have a hand written birth certificate showing St Anthony's as the baptismal place for Fred - my grandpa). Mary died in 1888. Frank was a devout Catholic. But what happened to the chlidren Frank and Annie? Did they die?

I would like to know where Frank came from in Europe and/or where his parents and any siblings were. He lived with the German community (and as far as I can tell spoke German) though all of the censuses except one show France as his origin and one census said "german/french". Family lore said he came from Alsace-Lorraine and I've posted an inquiry to that board via another genealogy site as well as Hannover.

Why did Frank "Franciscus" come over here and did any other of his Romain relatives come or were already here, i.e. possiby Bopp Romain?

Also, I don't have any info about Mary Buescher's family either. She, along with Frank, is buried in the Keutervile, Idaho cemetery. He died in 1925.

I appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Yes, Isaac Romane was the brother of John Romane who died in Parke County, IN. I was in the courthouse researching the Romane family and read through the records regarding the settlement of John's estate. I descend through Isaac's line. Do you have information on the family back to their arrival in America?

Second response, yes this is the correct family. Charles W. Birnsteel is the name I should have entered. I am tracing Emma Prentice Watts Hurst who lived with her sister Mary and her husband Charles W. Birnsteel in the 1910, 20, and 30 census. She died in 1950. Again, my e-mail is bobwilson528@yahoo.com. Thanks,

As far as I know, there aren't any other Birnsteels in the United State except the Charles Birnsteel families. My husband's father was Charles Watts Birnsteel and he did die in 1998. His father, Charles W. (I think for William) Birnsteel died in 1969. Could you have their first names wrong? Senior worked for Avery Savings and Loan and my father-in-law worked for Traveler's Insurance. The name was originally spelled Birnstiel but was changed during WWI because of anti German sentiment, or so I was told.
Help?
Laurie Birnsteel

We love newbies! Welcome to the board.

First of all, in your subject line always post as much information as you can especially put the name and location or at least a date in the subject line of all your posts, you'll get more people looking at it. Example:

Looking for Dad William A Romain b Ballard Co. KY

Then try to put dates, full names, city, state, etc, siblings, parents etc. The more info you can give the better chance someone may recognize the name, live in the area, or know one of the other relatives.

With that said,

Try doing a search for the name and variations. If you live in or near Ballard County, KY, I would start with the local library there. Do a search for the local City Directory for that time period and you may find him or a family member.

Search online here for the Social security death index as he may have died there or somewhere else.
